Fabulous food, friendly staff and good service. What else you need from a cafe?! Oh right coffee! Strong and rich coffee, you won't regret! Oh but the food is just something else, thanks for making it so delicious! If you are in Melbourne don't miss this spot!

We chose the sautéed mixed mushrooms over toast with cauliflower, kale, goat cheese, shallots, and poached eggs. The mushrooms provided an earthy background, while the other components brought a savory depth to the dish. Kudos to the staff for taking extra prep time to adequately clean the kale, and remove the tougher veins, and less tender larger leaves. The toast was a nice substrate for the semi congealed yolk. Unctuous without being too runny. We rewarded ourselves for the healthy start to our meal by following it up with the ricotta pancakes. Lofted by whipping the egg whites, the texture was less dense than most pancakes, though not soufflé airiness. A rhubarb raspberry compote added a balance of sweet and tart, with grapes and strawberries allowing different notes. Crushed pistachios added some crunch. If that weren't enough, a dollop of marscapone was there for additional richness, and I am pretty sure it had some lemon blended in. My wife and I weren't worthy of such a sublime breakfast. I am just glad they didn't know that.

Salmon with quinoa, potato rosti, poached egg with pea and wasabi

Visiting Melbourne and decided this cafe looked inviting. Had the mushroom yesterday which was delish but decided on the Salmon this morning. Yummo Service is excellent as is the Food and coffee. Highly Recommend and they are open 7 days a week

Amazing hipstery place , coolest interior design lots of good looking people - had the most delicious bircher!

Very neat venue with funky lighting and a nice vibe. Nice location on a quiet side street with outdoor seating, but no particular view. The smashed avocado toast was alright, kinda bland and lacklustre. The toast was far too hard and I had to ask for a steak knife to cut it. Less than 5 minutes after ordering my food was out, which makes me wary and might have explained the toast (probably toasted ahead of time). The coffee was great. It's hard to find a decent soy cap, and his one was great.

I guess the fact that they serve beautiful food and even beautifuler coffee in the beautifulest space makes up for the fact that their name conjures an ugly, ugly, ugly association that shall not be further mentioned... Breakfast all day was really the 5-star tipping point for for me, and not only the fact that it's all day, but that it's one of the best breakfasts I've yet to have in Melbourne and it revolved around something as simple as bircher with poached pear. And I can have it anytime during opening hours. Or maybe it was the incredible long black. Or maybe the kind server who remembered me from visits weeks apart from one another. Or maybe it was the lighting - seriously, the lighting of this place made me feel almost as beautiful as everyone else in there. It was *not* the name, that's for sure. Yikes.

Take a barista who has just moved from Perth who greets your, "How are you this morning?" with a elated "I'm AMAZING!", an interior that is a feast for your eyes (think coffee cup and saucers turned into light fixtures to hang above the door, cherry blossoms against crisp white subway tiles and retro cool macramé plant hangers holding glass fish bowls) as it is for the tastebuds. Coffee: Amazing. The white beans are a blend of Brazilian, Indian, Guatemalan and Columbian beans. Your black coffee is a Brazilian and Kenyan blend OR if a filter or aero press is more your thing its an Ethiopian which I'm told has notes of passionfruit and creamy peach. Melbourne, you understand me! The barista and I riffed coffee nerd for a few minutes before he returned to his duties as SUPER barista. Food: Breakfast. How could you go past the twice cooked marmalade French toast, oranges and vanilla mousse or maybe the smashed avo with fetta, capers, tomato, radish chives and dill. Or baked beans with haloumi and coriander pesto. I opted for the protein-rich yet 'clean' blonde omelet with smoked salmon and a fennel and coriander salad. Brain food x 100 and freakin' delicious. If I was here for lunch I'd be hard pressed to deny myself the braised saltbush lamb sandwich with crusted peas, feta, chili and mint. I revisited a few times while I was staying in the area and their take-away service was equally as dazzling.

Didn't really get to enjoy their menu yet. But as far as customer service and coffee for that price goes. I've experienced better. Don't know what these two birds one stone means but I think it means the waiter asking you "did you want a takeaway coffee without you asking for a takeaway coffee". Having a cafe, the staff has a duty to let customer say whether they want a coffee in the first place and if they want to have it there or takeaway. I think I was not hip enough for this place so that might explain it.

I have the biggest crush on Two Birds One Stone. I mean, how could I not when they cover all my key requirements in a cafe? Great design - TICK Bangin' coffee - TICK Interesting menu items - TICK Fun staff - TICK Throw in some terrariums and good music, and you can be certain that I want to go steady with this new addition to South Yarra. My current menu picks - the blonde omelet with hot smoked salmon, fennel and chili is protein packed and tasty without being over-the-top rich. The "One Stone" breakfast is a vegetarians delight with corn, haloumi, mushrooms and other veggie goodies. Rotating daily salads are fresh and vibrant and mean you can eat a cake afterwards without guilt. If you're a design nut then your eyeballs will be as delighted as your mouth as you take in all the light fixtures, tables and furniture. Mmmm industrial design... *drool*. Also, please try and steal a terrarium for me.

Brekky... so much food, omg.

Topped off a weekend in Melbourne with brunch here - we all had the "Two Birds, One Stone" breakfast, which is epic - 2 eggs, toast, avocado, haloumi, a portobello mushroom and tomatoes... I also added the bacon & sausage. I had a hard time finishing it. It was just endless. That is very unlike me. Two of my girlfriends added on bacon AND beans and... lol... omg. TMF!!! TMF!* WTFBBQ?!! I scoped this out on my Yelp/Time Out Melbourne investigations, and to my delight, it was right acrosss the road from the apartments we were staying at. The wait was 20+ mins for our table, which was a little over the top, and we started getting antsy and wondering if it was such a great idea to eat here after all, but you know what? Breakfast was so awesome (and the coffee) that we all wholeheartedly agreed it was well worth waiting for. "Who chose this spot?" "Dana found it!!!" "Good job girl!!!" A+ * Too much food.

Very nice cafe. Lively atmosphere & great environment. Strongly recommend confit duck salad to those who are looking for healthy green&protein! (it doesn't have heavy sources to make you feel thirsty after the meal)

Pulled pork roll. Yum.

Even though I live in the area I've always found South Yarra's array of restaurants and cafes to be pretentious and not overly exciting. Well that changed this morning when I made a trip to Two Birds One Stone for breakfast and coffee. Upon walking in I was instantly impressed by the decor, in particular the sand blasted oak stools. I then looked up and noticed they stocked Five Senses coffee. We were in for a good morning. After being quickly seated I ordered the smashed avocado (a favourite of mine) and this was probably the best I'd had. Delish. A definite stop if you're in South Yarra and in need of breakfast or lunch.

Brunching around Melbourne is one of the things I love most and this place didn't disappoint. On weekends I like to pretend I'm hip and in the know and this place makes me feel like I'm in the thick of it with its cool and friendly staff and modern decor. The food was great and filling and like always I went with something savory, the salmon and asparagus thingy. Must try the pancakes next time, they looked great. Definitely a place I would come back to!

Steve and Matt (the faces you will see on most visits) are hilarious and encapsulate good service - they're friendly, accommodating, and take an interest in their regular customers. This alone is worth visiting Miss Jackson for, but throw in their great menu and you'd be crazy not to put this place on your list of regular brunch haunts. Breakfast covers a lot of the usual suspects - but the winner is the corn cakes with bacon, avo and chilli jam, accompanied by a strong Allpress coffee to wash it down. The corned beef sandwich with pickles makes for a sturdy lunch and the home made slices and muffins are a great afternoon pick me up. A rotating specials menu offers seasonal variety - recently; a panfried garfish with a panzanella salad got two out of two thumbs up. Sit outside if you fancy some sun, at the large communal tables if you want to read the papers, or in the back room if you're after discretion. Either way, you won't be sorry.

We ordered 4 meals and 6 coffees =$95. 2 Spanish eggs which had changed from the last time we came here, a serving of the pot set avocado and goat chèvre, pumpkin bread with cured salmon, and I had the lamb and quinoa salad + extra poached egg (the egg makes the meal a breakfast right?) which was a bit skimp with the lamb but still tasty. Definitely one of my fave places for a fab coffee in St Kilda!

Their most recent collaboration was Outpost Cafe in South Yarra (reviewed here). The restaurant has installed itself in the neighbourhood of Golden Fields and Baker D. Chirico. Just having these couple of places open up along Fitzroy Street shows that the area is turning itself around from being a grungy backpacker hangout / tourist hotspot to an exciting home of new and upcoming restaurants. It is amazing what the team has been able to do with the space they have. As you enter and make you way through it seems like you arrive in the front garden, walk up the stairs to the balcony or front porch, move into the elevated dining room and from there you have a clear view of the very open kitchen. And by open I mean you could accidentally wander in, no fault of your own and start cooking yourself. I don't suggest doing this as they have everything pretty much down-pat as it is. The front room of Fitzrovia has all kinds of sweets, pastries and pretty much anything you need to accompany the coffee that is a prerequisite when visiting. On both occasions we visited there was a small throng of people gathered just inside the doorway, which you could initially interpret as a waiting line - but as this is still relatively secret spot you can usually find yourself seated in a jiffy. Fitzrovia's coffee offerings are single estate coffees handcrafted by those blokes down at St ALi in South Melbourne. Head barista Cian Evans is a master of the craft and every coffee that we and our friends have ordered has been consistent in its top quality. If you fancy yourself the home barista they have retail packs to takeaway as well. On our first visit we got there during the brunch/lunch crossover. I have slowly whittled down WordMonkey's aversion to pork by getting her to only try the best and tastiest morsels of pig flesh. And when she opts for the pulled-pork sandwich over any number of eggy choices, you know you have not just won the battle but also won the war. And to make matters worse, when discussing what is the best pork sandwich in Melbourne, she has no second place. So that first visit was simply a pigfest. The flavours were all on-song, the pork juicy and flavoursome, the tangy salad exhibiting just the right balance of Asian herbs and apple-fennel crunch. We returned last week as a precursor to one of the biggest race meets on Melbourne's calendar - the Cox Plate - in conjunction with WordMonkey's birthday celebrations. Her and our Bondi buddy got the fizz flowing and it was up to me to ensure the quality of the coffee was still up to scratch - which it was. Showing up much earlier than our previous visit we had less of a selection but this was a blessing in disguise and we were able to hit a few more dishes rather than reverting to the old pork favourite. WordMonkey decided on asparagus, poached eggs, Daylesford dry-cured bacon crumble and creamy goat's cheese, with a punchy fennel salad. While visiting friend had house-smoked Tasmanian ocean trout and toasted quinoa with poached eggs and salad. Rave reviews on all fronts - the only complaint being that the portions were a little small for the price and that we had to order toast to bulk up the brunch. It would have been nice to get toast included. In the end, the toast we did order didn't turn up until right at the end of the meal. But no dramas, removed from the bill, life goes on. I opted for the Istra Daylesford dry-cured bacon, smoked mozzarella and pear relish toasted doorstop sandwich. If anything in that last sentence is not deemed heaven on a plate then I don't want to know you. It is the equivalent pork belly sandwich served at St ALi - same dreamy bread and all. But the bomb was the addition of that gorgeous chewy cheese and the added element of the pear relish. Fitzrovia is a special little place in a part of the city most people only head to if the weather entices them. The hook that will have people returning to this neck of the woods is that Fitzrovia is also open for dinner. In addition to breakfast, lunch and dinner being catered for, the team has acknowledged that with spring here and summer around the corner you may not want to be cooped up inside. So taking advantage of the proximity of both St Kilda beach and Albert Park on their doorstep they are offering 'the ultimate picnic lunch...made fresh on the day using the finest in Victorian produce'. They will even arrange chilled wine or champagne to be waiting for you to pick up at Prince Wine Cellars just down the road.

We were shown to our table quickly and given time to look over their delicious sounding menu. They offer breakfast for most of the day, and lunch from late morning, so there's a lot to choose from, but I decided to go with the Two Cheese Beef Burger, but just asked them to hold the brie. The mix of pickled onions and English mustard, gave it a nice punch and a distinctive difference to other burgers out there. The fries with it were spot on; perfectly cooked and tasty. I will say, however, that another reviewer (or two) were right when they said the brioche buns were dry and crumbly. I really wish restaurants and cafes would give you the option of a bun. I don't like brioche buns (mainly because I don't like sweet and savoury together), because they CAN be dry, and this is the part where the meal let us down just slightly. With that all said, I really recommend Turning Point for either breakfast, lunch or brunch. Parking CAN be brutal (it's right outside a train station), though yesterday there were cars pulling in and out of spaces, so you can be lucky. One reason for this is that I'm a little bit sad about the demise of Land of Siam, the Thai restaurant that used to be at this location, because it was a staple in my lazy Friday nights when all I want to do after work is collapse on my couch with some pad thai and a bottle of red. But then Derby Thai moved in down the road, so that helped the Thai issue (even though I really liked the Land of Siam in particular). The next reason for procrastinating about Hide & Cheek was their choice of font in their signage. No, really. Maybe I hang out with too many graphic designers or something, but this is a really naff font choice. Font matters because this made me think this was going to be a really naff place. While I would still love to give their signage and their menu layout/design a complete overhaul, this is actually a nice little local cafe. Inside it is quite light yet warm and cosy.
