Our first breakfast spot was the ever so popular Manchester Press, located in an alleyway (of course) in an old warehouse. So begins our exploration of the alleyways of Melbourne! Despite being located in an alleyway in a brick building with all things industrial, Manchester Press is a homely, cozy cafe. Lots of people were already lounging or having a cuppa when we arrived, which was a change from our dinner yesterday. The laid-back ambience of the cafe made me feel right at home, and we were greeted by friendly staff and served drinks of our choice quite promptly. I had the chai latte (4), which was a bit of a disappointment even with the self-serve honey, but Jo's latte (3.5) had awesome latte art! We split two bagel plates - one with smoked salmon and a salad on the side, and the other the fruit bagel with mixed berries in marscapone and pistachio. The smoked salmon bagel wasn't anything out of the ordinary, but I did like the latter. The whole mound that topped off the raisin (?) bagel was delicious - not too sweet, not too heavy, and berry-ful! I loved it, but there was a bit too much marscapone, though no real complaints! The bagel was the perfect chewiness, and I liked it better than the sesame one with the smoked salmon. Great place and location, great service, and definitely worth the visit!
Wandered into MP thinking about a super late breakfast... The menu for an Easter Sunday wasn't huge in variety but there were all sorts to think about. I ordered the açai bowl and an ice cream latte. The latte was strong, rich and creamy. The slight sweetness from the vanilla ice cream countered the bitter (but smooth) coffee hit. Once the ice cream had melted the dark latte was too easy to drink. Yum. The açai bowl was presented immaculately. Fresh berries, smooth açai purée, granola and half a passion fruit. The granola's crunch gave a pleasant mouth pop that wrapped itself with açai and fresh fruits. The flavours mingling into a sweet and sharp composite that tingled the tongue. The passion fruit was delightful, and that's coming from someone who cannot stand the flavour in drinks, yoghurt and such. Eating it without anything else brought out it's slightly sour aromatic flavour and gave me a surprise of how nice the fruit could be. I was impressed. Service was pretty quick, friendly and not over attentive. That's how I like it. Not in your face wanting to move you on. They even politely asked if I minded moving my own some to another location so they could fit a larger group on the table I sat at. The approach was kind, gentle and made you feel like it was an imposition for them to ask - now that is service. Atmosphere was hipster relaxed. Music not too loud and nicely varied. Great spot to eat, and from what I could make out. Chat.
Delicious bagels!! Flavours are similar to your usual breakfast items - bacon with banana, avo with feta etc. - but served on a bagel instead of pancakes or bread respectively. Lots of people. Self sign up waiting list outside. May have to share tables. Relatively fast service. Good coffee. The bagels are soft - thankfully, my jaws cant take the super solid ones. Friendly service. But no baby seats.
4-star? 5-star? I can't decide. The bagels here are AMAZING. I'll give you that. $13-$15 AUD a pop for their deluxe pulled pork, smoked salmon, pastrami, et.c, type of bagel, and around $8 for the more simple cream cheese, butter toasted bagels. We got the pastrami bagel ($13) with sauerkraut and pulled pork bagel ($14). Look, this isn't cheap, but i guess it's your average Aussie price. I'm not gonna lie, both those bagels are likely the best bagels i recall ever entered my mouth. Unfortunately, the takeout is the same price but sans salad, which made me regret not having sat down for the food. I mean I didn't get pickles, salad, or red onion, which looks delicious on the pictures here. The portion of the bagel is really big and will fill you for most of your day. The coffee here are your average Starbucks prices at around $3-4 for the flat whites and lattes. The settings is ultra hipster rustic. Spacious large tables and quick services. Perfect for breakfast or lunch. I'm impressed!
Just popped in for a coffee just after lunch. It's down a laneway off of Little Bourke Street, just round the corner from Brother Baba Budan. The place was busy and the staff friendly. I had my signature double shot latte and it was great. The menu is bagels, bagels and more bagels. Shame I'd already eaten as they looked good. Small selection of cakes available too. I'll come back for a feed next time!
We were looking for a good brunch place on the Yelp app and it straight up delivered! Hidden in a laneway (typical Melbourne) in a converted garage/warehouse, instead of writing your name down, the host mark your name in chalk by the door. Cool. We were craving bagels (I haven't had a good one since America) and this place looked like it specialised in them...and how! I ordered the pastrami bagel, which was basically a Reuben bagel, and my gf ordered the Hungarian salami bagel, both which were closed face. I got mine on sesame seed and she got hers on poppy seed. Both were pretty ill. What was also pretty ill was the coffee...didn't expect my flate white to be that good. The wait on a Monday for brunch was not too long, maybe 10 minutes. I would definitely come back to try their other bagels...especially the lox. The portions on that thing are so ridiculous you might get mercury poisoning.
If you need to know anything about Melbourne it is that they love their laneways and I love that as a city they realise these spaces are up for use in many numbers of ways. Urban adventuring at its best when you wander up a seemingly desolate laneway and find a thriving cafe like Manchester Press. Oh and bagels and their own blend '8oz' coffee. It's hard to find someone who does this boiled bread so well, but once you do - hang on to them for dear life. They could offer so much more on the menu, but in this reinvigorated warehouse bagels are their schtick and boy do they do it with such ease and grace that you'll soon forget the only thing on the menu are bagels and their various toppings. While I opted for the pastrami open bagel, my breakfast buddy went the smoked salmon open bagel and I had instant food envy. I only wish I had more time to dine on your bagels morning, noon and night, dear Manchester Press.
Ughh the only good thing about this place is the cute decor and location. The coffee was average. Bitter. The bagels were stupid, tip top un boiled preservative filled donuts. I got the pulled pork bagel. I don't even know. It was supposed to be Vietnamese... There was nothing Vietnamese about it. Tasted like it was cooked at 300 degrees for a week with some gravox. Coleslaw was terrible probably made a few days ago with no seasoning. My friend got a chorizo and 'Swiss' cheese bagel. The chorizo and cheese Coles brand was an atrocity. It wasn't even Swiss cheese. The tomato was green and why the hell would Anyone want a salad with breakfast? Why is this place 4 stars? It's awful. Don't come here. It was cheap and rightly so. Also I don't think the chefs are chefs, they suck.
Hidden down a laneway, lays this unique one of a kinda cafe! Manchester press, a must visit in Melbourne. First introduced to this place by a friend! I walked in and was amazed! Decor is stunning, in a warehouse style building, inside fits the part. Great communal tables, small group tables and single bench tables it caters to all!.. I have never been here when it's not busy, always buzzing with people, as it should be! Catering to Melbourne hipsters, locals, travellers and your everyday adventure cafe seeker. The coffee roasted from 8oz coffee, is a great blend, producing a nice and creamy blend. Specialties are there bagels, full of fun! You can have a bagel sweet, savoury or plain! From a amazing breakfast menu to an outstanding lunch menu, this is a must try!
Went to Manchester Press for breakkie. Fresh toasted bagel with dill cream cheese topped with a huge serve of salmon and capers. It was delicious. Love the interior, a warehouse with cool big illustrations hanging off the wall, rustic wooden tables with old retro chairs. What a perfect way to start the day! Service was friendly and my long black was so good I had to order another one for the road. All cost me only $19!
Today morning, my friends and I wanted to go for brunch but we did not plan which place to go. I checked on Yelp and find out that Manchester Press has good review for the food. So we decided to give a try. I ordered the Open Bagel with Chorizo and it was delicious. My drink was a latte. Totally love it.
Prepare to line up as this place is ALWAYS packed, but for good reason. A very hip, cool place with nice coffee and delicious food options. Get there earlier than you intend to eat, pack an umbrella if it's drizzling whilst you wait in line, and be okay with sharing your personal space at a large table or window bench.
I loveeee this place!! This place is sorta hidden in the small alley. It looks like they renovated parking garage and made into a restaurant. Inside is very spacious and lots of light. It's a perfect place to chill on the weekend to get a brunch. Not only this place is very hip but also their food tasted amazing! I loved their bagel dish and acai bowl. Acai bowl was definitely insta worthy (very pretty) and tastes super healthy. I liked their bagel dish it was very flavorful I kept eating even though it wasn't my food..... lol I think coffee was alright though. I would definitely recommend this place! read more

Manchester Press struck me as your typical trendy Melbourne laneway brunch spot. I thought it was nice, but I wasn't blown away by it. I felt it was awfully overpriced. The cafe itself is tucked away in a laneway off Little Bourke, and it's cute in a hipster sort of way, with big distressed-wood slabs acting as shared tables, low-slung industrial lamps, big windows/sliding glass doors, and peculiar art on the back wall. I liked the atmosphere but I'm not a big fan of shared tables. We shared ours with a couple whose relationship seemed very new, and the girl's parents were there too. Seemed like the boy was meeting the girl's parents for the first time and their conversation was SO PAINFULLY AWKWARD. Aside from not being wild about the shared table, I also wasn't a huge fan of the long wait. Melbourne seems to fall victim to "trendiness" all too often. Whenever a restaurant is deemed trendy, the wait goes out the door. Chinchin, Hardware Société, you name it. And if I have to wait any longer than 30 minutes for food that ultimately is just kinda nice but not amazing, it makes me a bit grumpy. That's how I felt about this place -- like it was fine, but it definitely wasn't worth the 40 minute wait on a Saturday morning. Food-wise, I enjoyed mine but thought it was way overpriced. I had the vegan chia seed pudding with passionfruit. It was pleasant-tasting and BEAUTIFULLY presented, with cute little edible flowers sticking out on top, but it was not at all worth $13.40. I could run to the nearest 7-11 and pick up a Chia Pod for less than $4. And I could make a chia pudding myself for $2. You see what I mean. My friends (who are not vegan like me) had bagels. They came with a small scattering of pretzels, which just struck me as kind of a cheapskate move on the restaurant's part. The bagels are all in the $13-15 range, and again, for a bagel with maybe 8-9 tiny little pretzels and a pickle on the side, just seems way overpriced. I *do* like that this place has some clearly-marked vegan options on the menu. In addition to the chia seed pudding, they have a bagel named "Go Vegan!" with eggplant, tomato, pesto, and capsicum. They also do a basic toasted bagel with PB, jam, vegemite (boring) that's vegan and cheaper than their fancy-pants bagels. They have Bonsoy for coffee, and a couple of teas. Overall, not a bad place, and it's great they have clearly-marked vegan options. But while I enjoyed my food, my wallet and I are not in any major hurry to go back. read more

The setting: Urban, yet warm and welcoming. The service: So friendly and quick. The food: Baked eggs, asparagus and goats cheese with a bagel was one perfect hearty breakfast, and ideal sustenance for the day of shopping that lay ahead of me. read more

Oh my. The final stop on my self-designed Little Bourke Street Coffee Tour, the food on offer at Manchester Press was awesome. Everything looked so good, but I settled on the pulled pork bagel with homemade apple slaw. It was very, very filling, and actually really generous with the pork, and the whole thing was just delish. I hear ALL the bagels are excellent I'm inclined to believe them. They did get my bagel choice wrong though. I request plain and got one with poppy seeds. The coffee was also done well, and the special of the day, a spicy chorizo soup sounded amazing. Too bad I didn't have any stomach space for it. I'd love to hang out here regularly and work my way through their menu. read more

The menu is funny! It is also packed full of amazing food but it is also funny! A big plastic board with everything on labelmaker strips! Enjoy the chai latte - Carma Sutra! Cute location. Funky and decent sized space down a narrow lane. Surprisingly limited breakfast menu. Seven specialist breakfast items only, three of which are bagels In various incarnations. No egg dishes which is very odd. Choices can be made off other areas of the menu though. I had a chorizo bagel which was just ok. My colleague's avocado smash looked just ok. The coffee ,however, was superb. Creamy and very nicely made indeed. Service was very good. Pleasant and most efficient. Steady stream of customers evident after 7.30am. I might be too blind to the non coffee attractions here. read more

Affordable, generous proportion of servings, brilliant coffee. This place have a nice old school vibe mixed with aromas of all sorts delicious foods and coffees ... Lovely team that look after you so professionally and you won't be on your own. You can crack a joke or two with them too if you feel like it :))))) I can't wait to go back to have another second breakfast again... If you are a Bagel fan... This is the best place for you. read more

Always a good cafe for coffees - love that it's in a hidden laneway. We just opted for 2 flat whites, looked at the menu but nothing really caught our eye or we just weren't feeling that hungry. Plus the coffees here are good. Always come here when we are in Melbourne. With everyone going back to work today we went in after the rush and got a table straight away and their coffees are cheap too :) read more

Bagels and Coffee: a match made in heaven. Manchester Press is trendy and has some of the key factors to make it the quintessential Melbourne cafe: great coffee, Aesop hand wash, and a lane way location. A large and open cafe, Manchester Press has a charm that comes from its friendly service, light filled space, and happy customers. It is a place that radiates a friendly and comfortable atmosphere. The coffee is phenomenal: smooth and rich it's rare you'll need sugar. All the staff are well trained, although you may notice some subtle changes in quality depending who is barista. Don't be surprised to see some intricate coffee art staring back at you when you look at your glass or cup. My favourite design is the face of a lady complete with wavy hair. The menu is predominantly bagel based and you can choose from sesame, plain, wholemeal and poppy seed bagels before picking out the toppings. Diverse options including goat cheese and tomatoes, peanut butter and jelly, and avocado and feta are all delicious and satisfying. Manchester Press isn't open on Sundays and on Saturdays it's fairly busy, so try and get in on a weekday to get a table and a more relaxed experience. read more

If you have been to New York, you know they have the best bagels! nothing can top that at the moment. But if you are craving bagels in Melbourne, i guessed this is the best place to go. The Food I ordered the Smoked Salmon with spring onion, chive cream cheese spread topped with baby capers. The bagels are a bit hard which i like it soft when eating it with fillings on it, just like the ones in New York. The taste is standard but yummy. I also ordered coffee and they taste standard Melbourne coffee which is a good thing. The plus side about this brunch place is, if you are into cafe art you are in the right place. You can requested to have your coffee with cafe art like hearts, cat and so on. You will notice this as you go along the pictures on this cafe. Atmosphere The place is quite tricky to find, because is on an alley but if you ask around the shops they know exactly where the place is. The cafe decoration are unique and it is a standard size for a brunch place. Again, if you do plan to come here make sure you are willing to wait for a while, as you will be expecting a few line! Overall! I will come back here just to try something different as i was not really impressed on my first visit. By looking at the menu, i think it might be worth it to come the second time! read more

Down a little hidden alleyway with a minimum wait time of 30 mins we found this trendy cafe whom serve bagels and other fresh food for breakfast/brunch. Bagels...bagels in Australia, let alone Melbourne is a rarity and I miss them. Of course I will wait. Once our name was called we were seated at oh dear God not again, share tables...When will this terrible trend end? What are we, in high school? Anyway, once we were seated on our corner of the share table, staring at others in the face, we perused the menu for something decent to eat. We ordered the toasted blueberry bagel with jam and butter, chorizo bagel with pretzel chips and granola. We also both ordered fresh orange juice. That juice was so fresh it was straight from the farms. It was so good my partner uses it as a reference to compare to every dining place we've been to since and ordered orange juice. That's not a joke. The bagels themselves were decent. My chorizo was actually hotter than expected so I couldn't finish it. But what I did try was delicious. The waitress described the chorizo as mild and "not that hot" so I thought I'd be safe. Turns out my version of "mild" is different to the rest of the world's. The granola failed to impress we could've done without ordering it. The interior screams hipster which is typical Melbourne cafe so if you're not down with that, avoid. Otherwise it gets cramped and jam packed in here so come earlier if you want to lessen your wait time. We're not rushing to come back, I was eager to leave so I could check out Comme des garcons next door. read more

Stopped into Manchester Press for an early afternoon meal. The restaurant was nicely sized with fun decorations. Service could have been better but I enjoyed the food. I had a Avocado and Fetta Smash on a sesame bagel. Such a large portion but it was delicious. The quirk of Manchester Press is that their meals come with a side of pretzels. read more
