I then ordered the Duck L'Orange for main, it came with fresh mixed veggies and potatoes which was a decent serving and very filling. For the first time in all the years I have been going to Umberto's, the food wasn't up to the usual standard. The pasta, which two of us had, special $40.00, was tasteless, my partner's scallopine was chewy, probably yearling beef, and came with no vegetables, the carbonara was rather dry, but the best of the dishes we ordered. Before the food arrived we noticed foul smelling water under our feet, presumably coming from an overflowing outhouse. People at the other table also notice the smell. The staff seemed unconcerned, so we had to move ourselves to another table, by pushing 2 x 2 tables together. The staff eventually came to attend to us, but surprisingly, were critical of us for moving thereby losing a table for 2. Needless to say, we were not impressed with food, service or ambience on this occasion, so much so that we asked if there had been a change of management. The answer was "no". Sadly we won't be returning to Umberto's, which has been our "go to" restaurant since we moved to Preston 10 years ago having been introduced to it by a long term patron. Helen

We ordered a couple of beers - Pale Ales on draught - and then enjoyed a couple Entrees - a Trio of Turkish Bread with some pretty tasty dipping sauces. The sauces were generously portioned so we had to order extra bread to finish. We then tried the Grilled Oysters which were loaded with Bacon and cooked in Worcestershire sauce. I would have used less WS but it was still very tasty. Oysters were a little small but tasted good and - as for size - that's the luck of the draw. For my main I had the Ribeye with Mixed Vegetables. It came with potatoes but I swapped those out. The vegetables were plentiful and cooked just right. The ribeye was good - but a little tough in places. It came with what was advertised as "garlic butter" but which was really garlic margarine. Apart from those quibbles, it was a solid meal. The wait staff was a little hard to locate at times but was certainly friendly and knowledgeable. I think perhaps she had too many tables. Not her fault. If I could give 3.5 stars I would but will err on the side of generosity since I can't. Would definitely come back for a meal.
