We read good reviews on Yelp and decided to go there for lunch in a rainy Tuesday afternoon. There were two other tables in the restaurant when we arrived. We were greeted and seated right away. Overall the food was good and the service was very good. Quite pricy for what it is. The dish that stood out for us was the Canard a L'orange. The duck breast was perfectly roasted. Tender, juicy and went very well with the orange sauce. The escargot was also very good. Served classic French style in their shells with a garlic herb butter. We also really enjoyed the Charcuterie. An assortment of house made terrine, pate and cured meats. On the rich side from the pate and terrine. The Onion Soup had good flavor but we found it to be on the thick side. We prefer it more soupy and cheesy. We thought the Quail Confit stuffed with pate. The quail was on the dry side and a bit too gamy for our taste. The Bouillabaisse also missed the mark for us. The darker brown colored broth had a strong shrimp,flavor with a hint of saffron. We're more accustomed to a lighter tomato based bouillabaisse based sauce. We thought this dish was quite over priced at $44. Loved the atmosphere of the restaurant with its hardwood floor and high ceiling. Rough entry process but I think that's down to Covid and new staff more than anything which isn't their fault, as soon as we were quickly seated it was fantastic!Staff and management are lovely and courteous. Beautiful food, absolutely stunning, you will not be disappointed. You must order the citron tart and the crème brûlée. We ordered the French onion soup for entree, beef bourguignon and Duck confit for main, all amazing. The bottle of French Sauvignon Blanc was delicious and the French martini's are made with love. The French Brasserie lives up to what they say, it is relaxing, it does have soaring ceilings and vast glass expanses. The atmosphere is fantastic as the staff communicate with each other in French, speak to you with a smile and are always attentive. The scene is set. We ordered the Salmon Niçoise which is a Tasmanian cured salmon with olives, green beans, tomatoes, salmon caviar, herb dressing and the Tomate Deux Façon which is chilled heirloom tomato consommé, tomato, summer squash with chèvre salad. Both entrees were delicious and executed with finesse. Delicate, tasty and impossible to fault. A real treat. The mains were the Minute Steak which was a 230gm premium eye fillet with pommes frites, salad and red wine jus and the Coq au Vin Blanc which is marinated chicken breast, white wine and baby onion velouté with crispy baco. The minute steak was disappointing. It tasted amazing, but it was chewy to no end and hard to cut. A difficult meal to judge, considering every other element on the plate was flawless, but the main event. I expected better for the price. On the flip side, the marinated chicken breast was tender and filled with flavour, so not all was lost. If it was a premium eye fillet, as I have learned from Gordon Ramsay, it should never had been chewy like this, it is a cut of meat that should be tender, especially when asked to be cooked medium to rare. Dessert was next up with the Crème Brûlée and the Cafe et chocolat; what's that you may ask? Well, it's a milk chocolate caramel ganache with coffee liquor creme anglaise and vanilla ice cream. Both desserts were exceptional, perfect balance of sweetness and delighted the senses. A perfect way to end the night. It's a real shame that the French Brasserie couldn't pull off a minute steak, at $46, it was not satisfactory with a restaurant like this. I visited Becco recently, I had a scotch fillet, ordered to be cooked the same and was delicate and easy to cut. Surely, it's not meant to be chewy and hard to cut? I hope they listen to my feedback, as this minute steak is keeping the French Brasserie from reaching 5 stars. read more

Still an effortless 4.5 for me. I continue to believe that the French Brasserie is underrated. I've eaten here five times now for five excellent experiences. Had the lunch special again. A steal at under $40. My rillette was superb. My salmon equally superb. Add a lovely space and decor and polite, efficient and affable staff and you've got a winning combination. I can barely find fault. I love it. Second visit My second visit here and a second great experience. The restaurant is nicely tucked away in a lane. It's a pleasant and simply decorated space. I had the lunch special which was excellent and good value for money. Entree was the salmon rillette. Main course was fish. Both were outstanding and very tasty indeed. The accompanying one glass of wine I had was a chardonnay and very nice it was too. The staff were great. Pleasant, efficient and throughly professional with a (hopefully) authentic French accent thrown in. I couldn't have been happier and my companions felt similarly. This is a really nice place. They do what they do extremely well and at reasonable prices. As a result, it will continue to prosper. From a visit 5 months ago Went today for lunch. Nice little restaurant/bistro. Pleasant little space part way down a lane. The lunch special for $35 was good value I thought. I had the terrine for enter and fish for main with a glass of Chardonnay. Simple traditional French dishes like my Dad loves to goes on about from his childhood. I chose the fillet de bouef. My thickly cut tender yearling eye fillet was seared to a firm crust on its surface yet carved smoothly like pate under my knife. An elegant smear of ruby red beetroot purée gave a hint of sweetness to the delicate meat. It was exactly what I felt like. The dish is normally accompanied by a long block of potato salardaise; potatoes cooked in duck fat. I was unfortunately informed that the potato contained gluten or onion, I can't quite remember, but basically it wasn't suitable for me. They served us an extra dish of French fries to make up for this. read more

My fiancé and I came in for dinner on a Saturday night, to celebrate her 30th birthday. Booking is a must and it was a breeze to do so via their online booking form on their website. We had opted for the desgustation with wine pairing, and we were amazed with every course that came out. First course to dessert the food and wine was delicious. Making wish it was socially acceptable to lick my plate clean. From the moment you walked in, you were greeted warmly and welcomed by all staff who had such alluring French accents. I wanted to highlight our waitress, Sarah, who made our night memorable, with her candour and great service. This wasn't just our table but for all the tables she was looking after around us. My wife and I are big fans of French food, so much so we travel to France whenever we can. I would have to say this is the most french experience we have had in Melbourne, from the french speaking waiters to the french styled (and sized) dining room to the classic french dishes. Everything we ate was typically french - no fusions thankfully - and delicious to boot. Would recommend the cucumber soup and the steak tartare. Special mention to the manager - the complimentary drink at the end of the night was incredibly generous and most appreciated. We will be back. read more

Love this place. Discovered it when my boss decided to treat us for dinner. Of course, I've been a repeat visitor after that. Food: Delicious. Lamb and pork belly are two of my fav mains. Desserts: To die for. Pear one with Ginger icecream. I loved it so much that after coming home, I looked up the recipe to make ginger icecream. The French Brasserie is another one if those places that's been on my bucket list for awhile now, and I finally got to tick it off on Saturday night. I arrived early and attempted to buy a cocktail at Terra Rosa across the lane, but as none of the bar staff there appeared interested in taking my money I decided to have the obligatory pre dinner drink at the restaurant instead. My dinner companions were early too as it turned out, so we had a drink at the bar before being shown upstairs to our table. The place was packed (always a good sign) and bustling. The menu is typical French bistro fare, and to ensure I got to sample as much as possible I ordered the degustation - two entrees, two mains and dessert for $95 plus another $50 to match the wines. First offering was brown onion soup; a rich broth with a piece of bread and cheese immersed in it. Delicious. This was followed by escargot. Also very good, but the garlic butter sauce could have benefited from a little more salt. First of the mains was snapper. I'm not a big fan of white fish but this was really good, served with peas, a smear of pea purée on the side, and a couple of French fry shaped chunks of pancetta to give it an extra dimension. Great combination and the pick of the dishes for me. Second main was beef served with mashed potatoes. The steak was served medium rare, and as I prefer my meat blue, was a little overcooked for my taste. Still, not bad. Dessert was creme brûlée. Need I say more? Bistro d'Orsay might do this better, but only just. Light and creamy, wafer thin crust, just right. Great service, great company and great food. Pretty much the perfect night out. read more

The French Brasserie was an interesting experience. When I first entered, I was greeted by people who clearly spoke French as their native language (I do too and easily spot the accent). That gave me the sense the food would be close to authentic. The manager was very warm and welcoming and put me at ease, though he gave a little bit that vibe of not being totally genuine. I ultimately saw him treating pretty much everyone who entered in a very nice and friendly way which was great, but still, I had a bit of that vibe. I guess it's probably a cultural thing and it didn't fully connect with me. The place itself is located in a small side-street and unless you see the sign put on the main street, you'd never even imagine there is a restaurant down there. On the inside the place looks really nice and like a real French brasserie, without the cloud of smoke that is :) Food-wise, I started with a salad, followed by the filet the boeuf, and ending with the ganache au chocolat as a dessert. The salad was a bit of a non-event, not bad, not fantastic, a good salad nonetheless. The bread was pretty good though and I made sure to get some more to enjoy the remainder of the sauce left from the filet. The filet was a nice cut, cooked exactly as I asked, and well presented. Mine was accompanied with potatoes and a beet root puree which matched the meat pretty well. I had a glass of Cotes du Rhone that matched in strength the red meat and felt pretty good. The ganache was quite a bit rich and chocolaty but then I like that so I certainly won't complain about it. Overall, a great dinner, it wasn't cheap by any means, but the food was yummy and the place was quiet which made it easy to enjoy the food. read more

Easily one of the best French Restaurants in Melbourne/Australia. The lunch time special is a wonderful way to treat yourself when you are bored with the upper Collins sandwich fare. The staff are always friendly and welcoming. Today's hapuka was beautifully cooked and a perfect size for lunch. My companion's steak was perfectly prepared. After desert it was tempting to stay. Being so close to a busy foodie area it is surprising that this belle establishment is not better patronised at lunchtime. But then I would hate to have to queue. read more

Having never been here before my choice for it as a wedding anniversary venue was based purely on yelp reviews and it lived up to all expectations. This is down an alley and a bit hard to find but so worth discovering. Simply delicious. We had the mushroom moose to start and the bouillabaisse and french onion soup for mains. Every bite was simply delicious. The warm macaroons with fig were a fabulous dessert - not too sweet but completely comforting and delicious. The service was impecable. read more

Tender and tasty. Friend chose the filet Mignon, which was a winner. Took the advice on wine, a Heathcote Shiraz, a great choice. Shared a chocolate dessert, which was rich, creamy and decadent. Went recently for the express lunch during the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival. They increased the lunch price by $5, limited the menu choices, served a very ordinary main meal, charged extra for the coffee and generally dissapointed. The wait staff was very good however. Disappointed. read more
