We were drawn to Captain Melville's by the high Yelp reviews. Came in for a quick dinner on a Tuesday (trivia) night and got a table right away. Once you know what you want, you order at the bar. Husband and I both ordered burgers with fries, and the food arrived pretty quickly. The meal hit the spot. I liked how the fries were steak cut, and the burger was well seasoned. I remember the days when this venue was a club and band room. There have been a lot of changes since then. Polished wood, brass and a tasty menu make it a good pub destination that's a little on the fancy side. There is a dining room in the back which fits large groups or for a more intimate time stay in the front bar (or great veranda on Franklin st) for some people watching. Staff are usually a bit overwhelmed by large groups (do they never get busy?) and in the few times I've gone, really struggled to keep up with orders. Having said that they are all pleasant and nice. The food is decent and a notch above standard pub meals. Beer selection is usually the standard Aussie beers with a few interesting bottles thrown in. There is a great little cocktail bar located upstairs, I would suggest having a meal down stairs then a fancy drink up top. This place is definitely a notch above a standard pub and great if you are in the area (not much else around this part of the CBD) but I wouldn't go out of my way to visit. read more

One of my most favourite of the recent openings. I've never been disappointed with an experience at Captain Melville. From a quick drink, G&T's in the sunshine, to long boozy lunches, business meetings, dinner with the parentals, dates and gatherings of friends - I'm always happy after a visit. It's a big venue, but with multiple sections both in and outside it doesn't feel impersonal. Get a booth inside for a more intimate experience, a big share table when you're with your posse or just sidle up to the bar if you're after a post work cider. Anywhere you sit you can expect friendly and efficient service from staff wearing cute aprons (which I reckon they should sell!) I've eaten an awful lot of the menu and it's all beautifully executed, a celebration of good produce. Shayne in the kitchen is creative and has a way with balancing flavours. Everything is pretty to look at but the emphasis is on flavour and texture rather than making things look pretty for the sake of it. Anything with veggies is a winner and pretty much all the small eats are going to keep your tastebuds happy. The pork taquito is super juicy and the tofu has such wonderful flavours. The pork bun... well I won't ruin it for you, but trust me you need to eat one of those at least once in your life. The salt and pepper squid is exactly as it should be - the batter crunchy and not greasy, the squid tender and precisely seasoned - perfect to nibble on with beer or cider. The beef short rib comes with a little corn and bean salsa on the side... it's meltingly soft, though I found myself wanting to wrap it up with the salsa in a tortilla. Maybe next time I'll smuggle some in, inside my pocket. Then you have the steaks and burgers - keeps the carnvored happy with big slabs of meat served up with triple cooked chips and a lovely zippy salad that cuts through any richness. Drinks here are excellent. There's lots of option on tap and by the bottle for beer and cider drinkers, the wine list is interesting and has enough diversity to keep everyone happy. I like that there's a good representation of Victorian vineyards (?) But it's the cocktails that are the surprise winner - house creations are delicious and well made but if you fancy a classic or something not on the menu then Andre or one of the other bartender genius will be able to whip it up for you. So many places try to be all things to all people and fail at it dismally, but Captain Melville keeps pretty much anyone happy for any occasion and they nail it. Every time. read more

I experienced Captain Melville for the first time a few months ago during an Elite event and really liked it. I promised to return to try one of their burgers (I missed out on the mini sliders last time!) and finally did it on Tuesday. I love burgers, I really do, you can't imagine how much and (prior to Tuesday night); FergBurger's Tropical Swine (minus Pineapple) held the lead ahead of Beatbox Kitchen's Raph burger in my books. Captain Melville only have one burger on their menu so we went for it - the Captain's Burger: Wagyu Patty, Bacon, Cheese & Egg in a Brioche Bun with fries. The fries were a massive let down - dry, way too crispy and no good. The burger, however, Wow! Seriously, Wow! Sooo good! Thinking about it now, I'm shaking a little bit. Remember that scene in the Matrix Reloaded where the Merovingian sends a slice of chocolate cake to the hot blond sitting across the room in the restaurant and she is immediately sent into a state of utmost pleasure upon taking the first bite? Yep it dd... I took a bite and well.. It was as close to orgasmic as you could get... I think I must have finished the thing in under 2 mins or so. I have to admit that, compared to Ferg; the burger is sort of like a mini cooper size wise and it was quite greasy but I loved it anyway. If you love a good burger, well then make sure you pop in or you can have something else if you prefer. I went to Captain Melville for Trivia night (on Tuesdays) and it was awesome! 1 - There's a free beer when you check in with Yelp :) 2 - There's a free jug of beer per trivia table ! 3 - Do I even need it? Ahah! The trivia itself is nice, challenging and funny at once. 4 - Service is really good, and they make food really quickly. I had the vegan burger with fries, which was really filling. Probably not the best burger in Melbourne, but it went well with Trivia. That's it! You'll see me there again after I've done some more general knowledge research ;) read more

Captain Melville is situated in a cool old bluestone building on Franklin Street, not too far from the Queen Vic markets. It's one of Melbourne's oldest pubs, actually--it was built way back in 1853 and licensed as Mac's Hotel. Rumour has it (ok, actually a sneaky Google search has it) that back in the day, up to 100 horses could be tied up outside the pub. On the inside, it's been redesigned as industrial-chic but not in an in-your-face kind of way. We went at lunchtime. The place wasn't crowded at all. I've also been here on a Friday afternoon just for drinks, and it was PACKED. So I gather that this place is more well-known as an after-work drinking spot rather than as a lunch spot. I had the "Vegan Burger," which is a mushroom patty with soy cheese and cashew mayo. I was worried about the soy cheese because I'm pretty picky about which vegan cheeses I actually like, but this soy cheese was fine. The cashew mayo was really yummy, and the flavours all blended together nicely. The burger also was topped with two onion rings. As an American, I'm used to onion rings on the side, not on top of the burger, so I stared at it in silent puzzlement for a minute or two while my co-workers discreetly laughed at me. The burger came with fries. The whole thing is normally $19, but on Tuesdays it's only $15. I think it's good value for a Tuesday, but a tad overpriced if you're paying the full $19. I went with coworkers who ate beef burgers, and they enjoyed their burgers as well, but I think the consensus was "good food but not spectacular food." I will say the only significant downside to this place was that the wait time was pretty bad (40+ minutes). I don't mind as much for dinner, but if you want to just have a quick lunch and then dash back to work, I'm not sure this is a good option. On the plus side, if you're arranging a work function or birthday meal with a lot of people or something, this is a good place for it because they have really looooooooooooong tables out back in their beer garden/communal dining hall area, so you can seat a large number of people comfortably. There's also a front bar, which is pretty ordinary. I think the dining hall out back is nicer. I'd also like to try the "Loch & Key" bar, which is located upstairs and I guess is technically a separate venue (???) but both times I've tried to get up there, there's been a private function on. Methinks the verandah up there would be a pretty sweet spot to sit and have a drink. But otherwise, the downstairs is well worth a visit for a long lunch or a drink after work in the outdoor dining hall, especially on a sunny day. read more

This could very easily turn into my favourite work lunch restaurant. Its a great location, the decor is smart, service is quick so you don't need to worry about getting back to work on time. I booked a table in the dining hall which is out the back but I've also been placed in the front bar when the dining hall was overbooked. Now to the food. It's interesting, delicious and shows imagination. Must try's - Truffled lasagna croquette with basil Mayo. Also try the grain salad and the Pulled chicken taquito with black bean purée queso fresco. Warm salmon salad & potato rosti - again, not bad but not "wow gimme more of them sliders!" Angus steak burger - I can't tell.... It was gone before I could even take photo of it hahaha Cocktail teeny tea lady- sweet, light, and very Sunday afternoon. Love it. Dessert Salted caramel banana split - good, but I wanted more salted caramel. Maybe even caramelised banana, something more.... This is a large pub with indoor & outdoor seating. Order & pay at the bar and they will bring food to you. The yellow lentil dahl was pretty mediocre and the accompanying bread was pretty terrible - hard & dry. However, Wednesdays is $15 steak night and the small steak was well-cooked and came with some very crispy fries. All in all, it was just "ok"... maybe better to just stick with drinks. read more

Not sure if I totally dig this place. The place- Came here on a Monday night. The place had enough people but was not packed. Ample seating, indoor and outdoor. My biggest complaint of Melbourne in general is people need to stop smoking... It's bad for you. The food- not spectacular. We ordered the cheese burger and the chicken parma. Both were a bit blend. The fries were ok, like a regular fast food joint. No fancy seasoning. The beer- has a decent selection of beer on tap but was hoping for something a little stronger in flavor. You can order by a pot, a pint, or a jug. The service- friendly and helpful bar tender. Made some useful suggestions. Not as spectacular as I was hoping but pretty good value if you catch their happy hour specials. read more

My maiden name is Melville and I've been wanting to come here for ages. The venue is beautiful and rustic, very chic. The menu is simple enough but with a twist on all your favourites. My friend is a vegetarian and there weren't a load of options for her but they went out of their way to accommodate. I had a steak and my salad was delicious. I don't like cucumber or onion in a salad and he didn't put it in there, so extra points for that. My steak was well cooked and it came with a kind of rosti which was nice. Couldn't fault the service, friendly American (I think) chap who was lovely and attentive. A great vibe, although not that busy. Love the booths. I'm pregnant so I didn't check out the wine list but I believe theirs is quite good. I'd highly recommend checking the place out as nice pubs in the CBD of Melbourne aren't that common. read more

I came here one Friday night and it was absolutely packed, so I pretty much forgot about it, that is until one Saturday when I was wandering around the city checking out a number of places, and I found myself walking past here again. Anyway it was a lot quieter (in fact it was almost empty) so I decided to stop of here for a drink. The guy behind the bar was nothing short of awesome, and they even had a couple of my favourite craft beers on tap. Mind you, it is mainly a restaurant, but they front bar is pretty cool, and they also have a veranda (though considering all of the construction going on here it isn't really the best place to sit down and have a beer). Worth a visit just to check out the upstairs saloon style balcony with an adjoining upstairs bar specialising in cocktails. Pairing your drinks with the buffalo wings and fries is something I highly recommend. This venue is huge with plenty of nooks and crannies, a downstairs verandah, a traditional front bar and a gastro pub style set up at the back. These guys know how to cook. The vibe here is casual and the clientele mostly under 30. It's location near RMIT and Melbourne Uni benefits students but disadvantages those of us who are in the hub of the CBD. No matter because a tram can be caught via Swanston St or you could always work up a thirst with a brisk walk from your office. read more

Captain Melville has been on the very long list of "Places we need to go back to" for months, so I was more than happy to take some friends from out of town there for dinner recently. The tables outside were overflowing with customers on a night that was far too cold to be sitting outside, so we expected it to be extremely busy inside. We quickly headed for the dining area and were surprised to see that we were the only ones in there at first. Our table was big and roomy and we quickly ordered a round of drinks and decided that we would order a bunch of food to share between the five of us. Everything we ordered looked fantastic, and it tasted even better! We had the olives, quinoa salad, crispy fried chicken, beef shortrib, mushroom spaetzel, chicken kiev balls and prawn skewers and and it was much more than enough to fill our bellies. So with bellies full we struggled to decide what to have for dessert, if anything. We quickly went from getting two things to share, to three, and then eventually four after being told about the apple crumble dessert special. In addition to the crumble we also got the banana split, mousse and frozen lamington. Everything was gorgeous on the plate, with so many extra elements that you just wanted to take your time and experience each bit on its own. Of course, we didn't and before to long we were fighting it out over who would get to finish which plate off. Hopefully there won't be such a big wait between visits next time, because Captain Melville is really quite amazing. read more

I was there on the weekend with some close friends and the food was pretty much the best food i've eaten in a long time. We started with Lamb Brik and the crumbed Zucchini Flower. I could've just ordered 10 each of these and been quite content. But we wanted to try as much of the menu as possible. So we then had the Pork Belly Bun. This was my favourite. I will be stopping by Captain Melville a lot now, just so I can eat these. Then to the main meal, I had a Gippsland Black Angus Sirloin. Now I'm a bit picky when it comes to steaks, but these guys nailed it, cooked exactly how I like it and the jus was incredible. We were to full for dessert, but we'll be going back real soon so I can try the banana split, because if it's anything like the rest of the food we ate, it is going to be incredible. I haven't been since it was called Mac's Hotel about 14 years ago. During lunch we were looking for somewhere to go and I remembered it had good food. It was a little confusing figuring out if we stay in the front part or the back to eat lunch. But as lunch menu from the 'dining room' can be ordered from the 'bar' as well as the bar menu, we decided to sit in the bar section. We all had different meals that looked sensational. Fish & Chips, Chicken Parmigiana Roll, Bagel with Sauerkraut and my Squid on top of nori flavored miso mayo! This is a dish to go back for! You have to try that mayo. The squid was fried perfectly. No longer shall he be consigned to the history books. This place is a better venue than some, and is dualistically a great food and wine/drinks destination. They even have a really cool late night menu with am awesome beef brisket bagel. Yum! Plus good burgers and sliders. Tap beer is available, and one great cocktail of memory is the Beechworth gunpowder, It has a intriguing finish. More pubs should be akin to this style, maybe not the same but with a focus on Australian produce or history without being too saccharine or overly patriotic. No crappy and stinky carpet, No darkened cave, No sports and Tv's emblazoned everywhere, No Tab's, and not a dingy backwater trashy place to be. People like nice things, I like nice things. Oh My Yum! Captain Melville, you tasty pub, you. This place is a serious contender for best Parma in Melbourne. Featuring a juicy & tender free range chicken breast, it's not at all greasy and heavy like some Parmas can be. And while it might not be the biggest, the subtle touch of basil with the melted cheese, Napoli and ham make it so darn tasty. Served with a side of coleslaw (which only won me over even more) and hand cut chips (meh, they were ok, neither here nor there), the husband also agreed its one of the best Parmas he has sampled - and let me tell you, Parmas are his thing, and he probably has one a week! An interesting drinks menu with some cocktails I would like to sample come warmer weather. On this occasion we each had a Lick Pier alcoholic ginger beer. Served over ice with fresh lime, just as it should be. We sat in a nook at the front and ordered at the bar as they said the dining room out the back was fully booked. Staff were friendly. Lighting was moody. All in all, a cool little pub. Keen to get back to sample more of the menu too! And I noticed they do great food and drinks specials every day of the week, so I think it could be good for group lunches or after work drinks for city workers too! Check it out. read more

I had the Parma which was tender, juicy and incredibly tasty without a hint of grease. Not my favourite kind of chips (somewhere between hand cut chips and wedges) but they were good enough. This is a really well fit out, cool pub without the pretentious staff or patrons. It's one of the best chicken parmas in town (and only $20 with a beer on Mondays). The front bar is a really fresh take in the traditional Aussie pub and the dining room (or hall) out the back has a great vibe. The current owners have really done this old (1853) pub justice. read more

What a fantastic place, perfectly positioned directly opposite where we were staying for our girls weekend away in Melbs. Beautiful heritage building with an addition built into the back where the restaurant is. I shared a burger with my friend (it was massive) along with fried prawns accompanied by a yummy lime aoli sauce. Delish. Finished off with a lemon/lime tart (only downside the pastry was slightly over cooked). My other friend tried (and failed) to get through the rocky road, which was a chocoholics dream. This tucked away spot has a nice casual pub feel about it with a touch of contemporary urban style. Captain Melville was fine, but I don't think I'll visit again. The restaurant area is really not a place for couples. It might work better with a large group, but the noise levels, the way the long bench style tables are set (with couples sitting opposite one another, about a metre apart), the music and the relatively friendly, but haphazard service, just made it not the best pub experience. I get the whole "lots of noise makes creates a great buzz" idea, but I'm not sure the medium to high pricing really matches the vibe. I was actually quite exhausted after I left, and the level of noise meant that I didn't order another drink, nor stick around for additional courses (which probably would have gotten them another $50 or so out of us). I may not be the target market. It is in a backpacker area, although I think the backpackers tend to be in the pub area, rather than the restaurant. I guess I'm not saying that they shouldn't have music, but combined with all the hard surfaces, the music and the noise was just a bit too overwhelming for me. read more

I like this place, it's funky and fresh - the outdoor bit is quite lovely even though it is on a fairly busy road. Drinks and food are a bit expensive here, but more or less the same as many of the other places in Melbourne. I've been here twice, the first time there were some mishaps with the food (worm in the oyster, half portion chips etc. - but they were really nice about it and fixed it up). The nachos here are pretty great for when you need a small fix. read more

One of the oldest pubs in Melbourne & where Ned Kelly was said to be detained in the basement. Give it a go! You won't be disappointed. read more

Keeps in shape, but isn't afraid to toss back a pint (or five) over some greasy food... and also surprise you with an intimate knowledge of specific wine varietals or gourmet cuisine. Captain Melville is a place where newspapers have more than one section and wearing a skinny tie and suspenders won't make you a good bartender. Or a bad bartender, for that matter.
