So many beers... I mean biers. In a previous life when I lived on the other side of the planet, I developed a passion for Fruli - a sickly sweet berry flavoured beir from Belgium. I drank pints and pints of the stuff until my jeans didn't fit anymore, and realised I was better off without such a delicious drink in my life. I moved back to Australia and I thought I'd never drink my beloved Fruli again, but one evening at the European I saw it there on the menu and realised we had some unfinished business together... I'm not a beer connoisseur by any stretch of the imagination, but I appreciate the Euro's dedication to bringing the best from the old world to our stomachs. It's a fun spot to spend time picking random drinks and then drinking them, and as such it can get pretty loud later in the evening. The European is unpretentious and welcoming to all - an easy night out. Tip: wear loose pants. You'll need room for your stomach to grow. read more

I was a bit skeptical when my friends told me about how good this place is, but I ended up quite liking it! It has 3 floors and when you get bored on one of them then you just go and find people to talk to on another one! I have no idea what the food or drinks are like here as I didnt spend a cent despite being in here for 4 hours but the atmosphere seems nice. Bare in mind that this is a place with a large crowd of European students studying in Australia and a lot of Australians who want to practice their Spanish, so if you dont speak Spanish you may feel a bit left out in some parts of the pub (although of course there are plenty of other people to talk to as well). I find this a bit of a novelty occasionally but I can see why other people may find it boring and/or annoying. But it is what it is... Of the floors, the bottom floor is cozy with big booths, the middle floor is fairly open and the top floor is also open but with a semi open roof and I think people are allowed to smoke up there. The big heaters account for the cold air coming in. All in all, not a bad pub but Id like to go a few more times before making up my mind about it. read more

The first time I went to the Euorpean Bier Cafe was last halloween dressed up as a sexy minx (seriously, I was cat woman). Though it was quite awkward being surrounded by a ton of middle aged working men and women, we didn't let that phase us and still had a good time. I mean hey, this is one of our regulars so we do what we want. Monday is uni night at the bar underneath the accommodation I used to live at (RMIT VILLAGE) so we usually make our way to the bier cafe for cheap beer before heading into Bev & Mick's Turf Bar. Not only do they have each and every European Beer but they've got great deals on nightly. Monday is half price so you only pay 5 dollars. We'll usually come with a group of people so it's great when the upstairs area is open but it seldom is. read more

Been in many times over the years. Always have a good time here, but it's far from a fave drinking hole, not sure why. They've got a nice array of beers and some pretty good drink specials usually on, and I'm not sure if they still have a cover band playing later on weekends, but after a few ales that can be a bit of fun as well. One thing to note is that they must attract some jerks, as the bouncers can be pretty stern sometimes. Not unusual to get a call from someone outside who hasnt been let in and have to pop down to try and convince the bouncers your mate isn't drunk, he just has a limp, or a flushed face, or whatever. (Of course they usually are actually drunk, but that's besides the point.) Wouldn't go too far out of my way to visit, but worth a pop in if you find yourself near by with a thirst. read more

Excellent day out with mates if you plan ahead! The Bier cafe is decorated in dark stained wood which is both roomy and comfortable at the same time. Come in on one of the specials nights and you will be rewarded with $2.50 pints of any 'beir' I really enjoyed my last visit here with friends as we settled around one of the booths and had a bit and a few brews. The staff are polite and helpful and I can't recommend this place enough if you are looking for a great glass of bier or a hearty bite. read more

I've been here a few times over the years, but the gap between visits usually spans out a few years. Bar snacks, comfort food and an extensive range of European beer. They also have a newly opened and renovated roof top bar, which is rather impressive. Its been given a bit of a restoration to counter some of the damage that has been suffered over the years. For good measure too, some of the dinginess has been taken out. Really good beers, I don't know what else to say that hasn't already been said. read more

I guess a trip to Europe was the catalyst that made me come and check this place out. Okay, I have been to similar beer cafes before, but never realised the beauty of a Belgium beer until I had actually spent a decent amount of time in Belgium. Anyway, this place has some pretty good beers on offer, and even if they aren't on tap they might just have it behind the counter. Okay, they aren't all Belgium beers, since this is a European as opposed to a Belgium cafe, but you can expect to find some really decent drops here, even some that you may not have expected to find upon your return to Australia. I ended up grabbing the Tripel Karmalette, which as you can probably guess, happens to be a pretty potent Trappist beer (yep, they have trappist beers here as well). Okay, if you want to be boring you can also go for a pils, particularly since the Belgium beers to tend to be pretty pricey, but still, why not go for something good as opposed to something dull. read more

There's no worse day in the week than Mondays, right? Well this place turns it up a bit, and makes you start to hate Tuesdays. Haha. Euro Bier Café has this amazing selection of beer on tap. All European beers (I know, hard to believe). And on Monday, they're all half-priced. This means that a pint basically becomes $5. With a list that includes 4 domestics and 14 euro draughts you can drink till your heart's content (or you forget how to hold a pint to your mouth...). Cool décor inside kinda makes it that much more authentic of a night. Grab some friends and $20 each and you're set for a while! read more

I was told that the European something or other was a really good restaurant was located near the parliament end of the city. One evening I was walking in the area and saw the sign for this place and thought that it was the place that I was told about. Something didn't feel right, what I had been told was a little bit different to what I was experiencing. I really love the selection of beers that they have here and enjoyed a delicious Belgium beer with my porterhouse steak that was on special that night. I was satisfied with my meal but I had really high expectations which turned out to be for another restaurant not this one. Don't do what I did and get this placed confused with The European, completely different place. With that aside if you are looking for a nice meal or a quick beer before a show and one of the theatres located nearby this is a good place to come before hand. read more

This is a mixed bag of a place. The roof top bar is pretty good.The staff are friendly, a good selection of drinks and food on offer and the space is well set out. I would recommend visiting the roof top for casual drinks or will larger groups. I was a little confused by the bar down stairs, it's like an old school pub, with cheesy music and sticky floors! Excellent beer range. If you are after a quick bite to eat the food at this pub is surprisingly good. We've tried the pizza and tapas menu but they also offer more substantial mains. Pizzas are between $9 - $12 which is a bit of a bargain. One pizza is pretty sufficient for one person. There is a downstairs, street level and rooftop section. Nice old building, not a stinky old man pub nor a hipster bar. Happy this place was open on Sunday night during the Easter long weekend. For what it is, a definite four stars. read more

If you are looking for something a little more exciting than a Carlton Draught, but still want to wash it down with a decent pub meal, then this is the place for you. The great thing about the Eurpoean Bier Cafe, or Euro Bar, as the weekend crowd calls it, Is that you can try some great international brews, or a glass of Australian wine , and still have a parma or steak and chips, which is refreshing compared with many other venues that stock the same types of beers but only offer fancy meals that leave you stopping at macdonalds on your way home from dinner. Im not a huge beer drinker, but I dont mind the Leffe Blonde from Belgium, and its definitely fun to drink beers you cant pronounce. During the weekday evenings, you'll find the crowd is predominantly local city workers, with a laid back, winding down from work atmosphere. On the weekends, the venue steps it up notch, opening the upstairs live music room, which sees regular cover band Action Sam getting the crowd dancing. There is generally a line to get in on a Saturday night, yet because they have both floors open you can either dance the night away upstairs, or relax and catch up with friends over a drink or four in the downstairs bar. Fairly basic fare for lunch, but I still liked it. I had a Caeser salad with chicken and was fairly pleased, particularly with the generous chicken portions. A bouquet too to the young lady behind the bar on the second floor today who also served and cleared the meals. Impressive friendliness and overall service quality. It's a pub here. This is a very cool bar as it has very nice beer on tap and is well located in the CBD close to parliament station and other tram lines, so it's great for after work drinks. The roof top is spectacular and the other levels provide a good space for functions or to sit and eat something from the menu, which has some reasonably priced meals. read more
