Classic negroni cocktail with a single giant ice-cube.

1806 could easily earn a 5 star review if it was located in, say, the US Midwest. But this is Melbourne and there's a lot of cocktail bar competition. 1806 has sexy seats and low lighting. However, the venue is long and open so it's neither conducive for an intimate tryst in a private booth or for socializing with the other patrons. I've also found the staff to be quite 'hands-off' when I've gone here. Even to the extent of it taking a ridiculously long time to get our bill when trying to leave. (When I sit at the bar, I prefer a bit of friendly banter with the bartenders or a chance to learn something new about what they're pouring.) I am also a big fan of novel-like cocktail menus and 1806 rocks a lengthy one. However, I find the menu's organization difficult to navigate. The drinks are categorized by date instead of by flavour or primary spirit. When trying to decide on a drink, I'd rather know if it's sweet, spicy, made with tequila, etc. than if it was popularized in the 1930's or the 1960's. Chalk it up to personal preference - I know a lot of people that really dig this bar. I keep trying, but 1806 just hasn't rung my bell. When I'm looking for fancy cocktails, I'd rather go elsewhere in the city.

The 1806 is one of the best cocktail bar in Melbourne ! Famous for the atmosphere 20's, burlesque and authentic. The bartenders are wearing suits and tie. The bar himself is decorate with theater curtains and an amazing balcony surmounts the first floor. You almost feel like a VIP. The cocktails are INCREDIBLE !!! A great menu describes the birth of cocktails, their origins and how we mix different flavor in it. We can also buy the recipes book of the bar with almost all the drinks we can imagine. The service is great, not overbearing but they can easily sit for a while at your table to listen to your preferences and suggest you the best of the menu. Definitely a recommendation. !!!

I adored 1806. A classic, theatre themed bar with old-school leather lounges and moody (flattering) lighting. Our cocktails were very nice, I had a dirty martini and negroni, both of which they did well and the girls liked their fruity cocktails too. The bar and waitstaff know their cocktails well and were very friendly. The cocktails aren't cheap but it is the standard price you would pay for a cocktail in major cities. What really impressed me the most was the music...they had an awesome playlist with mixes of Chilli Peppers, Pharrell and 80s goodies like push it and ice ice baby.

This place is far from cheap but the drinks are great, as is the service and ambiance. There's a well-curated vintage vibe, but with comfy chairs. The place is table service only, so if it's crowded, I imagine you would have to wait. The cheapest cocktail is $19, but beer & wine can be had for less. (Still, it's a pity not to have one of their expertly-mixed cocktails described with a cheeky flourish in their menu, which is more like a book.) Great for a special night out or to cozy up with a romantic date.

PROS Great excellent professional service Comfortable, unique, vintage ambiance Great cocktails and wide range of beverages! Definitely recommend it for soul out there who enjoy a good drink or two (don't mind having more) Fancy place and great to hang out CONS Pricey, I spend at least $100 for all my drinks and snacks Limited snacks option Limited seating and not for shots kinda place

I enjoyed a great night in a lovely contemporary bar. The hostess was very helpful and  confirm availability as I did not make a booking. We enjoyed a couple of glasses of wine, cosmopolitans, mai tai and  calippo which was delicious and at the recommendation of our waitress for the evening. Highly recommended I certainly will be visiting again. great ambience where you could unwind on a Friday night without having to push yourself through the crowds to enjoy a drink.

When you have a few friends that are obsessed with wanky cocktail bars, you sometimes get bored of them cos you've just had too much of a good thing. I can see the attraction of 1806 with a tour of cocktails through the ages served up by some decent looking blokes in nice uniforms and a classy environment. But my experiences at 1806 have been pretty good but quite underwhelming when you reflect on what you expect for the price tag. I'd say Black Pearl and Gin Palace have the edge over them in terms of the cocktails I've tasted. Take this review with a pinch of salt as I'd probably prefer two different boutique hoppy beers over one of their killer cocktails.

Laid back bar with great cocktails. Go early and you won't have problems getting a table.

No one informed us about any policy. We paid for the bottle with 5% service charge which I do not think they deserved. We had a sudden work call at 11.30pm and grabbed the bottle to go, only for the staff to chase us to the front of the bar to inform us that they do not have a takeaway license. For christ sake, we already had bought the bottle!! Though it's alright, we respect policy. They highlighted that they needed to keep the bottle in the establishment. We asked if we could come back and finish it. They said they would keep our bottle. We rushed back to our hotel (Marriott- 200m away for the call). When we returned at 11.58pm, they had already thrown our bottle away. Unbelievable! They were quick to receive our money but equally quick to throw our experience out the window. No doubt, we returned almost at closing times but throwing our wine before closing time - if you wanna go by the book, that is still not your closing time. When we raised our grievances to the staff, she said she told us about closing time at 12 midnight. However, we emphasised that she should have let us know about the takeaway policy and license. Had we known, we would not have ordered a bottle. She looked at us blankly and simply replied "feedback received, but we do not allow anyone in after 12, so you have to leave". Quite honestly, ChatGPT / Claude / Grok could have conveyed more empathy. I am not a VIP customer nor am I a high spender. That being said, I value places with a human connection and empathy, and would regularly visit such places with joy and happiness multiple times. This place is not one of them. For this reason, I will never visit again. If you think likewise, and value authenticity and a true Aussie welcome, you would not visit this place. I hate to give negative reviews but please spend your money elsewhere.

From the moment you walk in, there's a buzz that makes the place feel alive without being overwhelming. It strikes a great balance between upscale and relaxed, making it perfect for a date night or a fun evening out. The warm lighting and eclectic design add to the charm and make you want to linger. Service was friendly, attentive, and well-paced throughout the night. The staff were knowledgeable about the menu, checked in on us at the right moments, and made the whole experience feel effortless and welcoming. Every dish we ordered was excellent -- not a single miss. We started with the Cauliflower & Mozzarella Croquettes, which were crispy on the outside and perfectly creamy inside. The Grilled King Prawns were flavorful and cooked just right, while the Kingfish Ceviche was fresh, bright, and beautifully balanced. The Stracciatella & Heirloom Tomatoes was simple yet outstanding, letting the quality of the ingredients shine. For mains, the Duck Breast was cooked perfectly and full of rich flavor, and the Lamb Backstrap was tender and well-seasoned. The Pecorino & Ricotta Ravioli was comforting and delicate, while the Seafood Linguine stood out with generous portions of seafood and a beautifully balanced sauce. The Honey Glaze Carrots were the perfect side -- sweet, savory, and executed flawlessly. Overall, State of Grace delivers on every level -- ambience, service, and food. An exceptional spot that lives up to the hype, and one we'd absolutely return to on our next visit to Melbourne.

It's the decor from extravagant chandeliers to deer heads with pearl necklaces; it's beautifully eclectic. I had an old fashion and it had the right mix of orange and bitters. I also ordered the burger which was decent and the fries were hot and crispy. The night I visited there was a live singer playing tunes. Service was quick and friendly. Even the ordering is eclectic as you order electronically (QR) pasted to a library book. This place is worth a visit.
