With a front window full of hanging and marinading roasted meats, Hung's set their stall out early. It would have been churlish to ignore this carnivorous bounty and, being no churl, we went for a selection of char siu, the honeyed roast pork, along with crispy cubes of belly pork known as siu yuk. Neither was bad by any stretch of the imagination, but served simply on a bed of rice they came over either as underpowered or too subtle, depending how charitable you're feeling. Moist and well cooked, I just wanted more taste. Flavourwise, things improved with a beef brisket hot pot. Big chunks of meltingly tender beef fell apart in a thick gravy of umami flavour. MSG enhanced? Almost certainly, the cloying afterburn of the flavour enhancer was unmistakable, but a perfect dish for a cold February night notwithstanding. Oddly, despite being a hot pot dish, it was obviously cooked in another dish and served in the clay pot as the outer container arrived stone cold, hastening the cooling down of the meat inside. read more

Great place for a no fuss, fast cheap feed. There's hundreds of options to choose from so the difficulty is finding one and going for it. Half roast duck, assorted pigs organs, prawn wonton noodle soup, duck noodle soup and hot and sour soup all passed the test!! Definitely would go back! read more

Great convenience for a cheeky late night (second) dinner. Just beware of the crowd it may attract as well that could really make your meal a little less savoury. We encountered some ratchet entitled brats who were obliviously racists and of course belligerent. Always stand up for what's right and don't let them berate the defenseless restaurant workers. With the help of 3 different patron tables, we were able to rid the dining environment of the obnoxious noise and restore a bit is peace so that we could enjoy our meals again. I went for wonton noodles served at an old favourite, Hung's on Wardour St (near the Chinatown arch). This place is my regular Chinatown haunt and it has barely changed in all the years I've eaten here despite a refurb and name change (it used to be called Crispy Duck). It might look tiny but its on three floors so don't be put off if it seems full. Whilst it won't change your life, Hung's wonton noodles (£4.50) tick all the boxes. The wontons have the right mix of prawn and fatty pork, they use the proper fresh egg noodle (san mein in Cantonese) and the broth isn't MSG laden. It's not a big bowl but compared to the miniscule portions that you sometimes get in Hong Kong, it's a supersize portion. Anyway, you get your money's worth with six wontons. I tried king prawn dumpling soup noodles (£4.80) a week later, these dumplings are bigger than their wontons and have more king prawn. They're known as sui gow in Cantonese or shui jiao in Mandarin. In my opinion, these are tastier than their wontons ! read more

The food is good, not great, but the prices are very reasonable and they're open late. It's a perfect spot for a quick post-theater meal. I ordered the 3 meats over rice, selecting the duck, roast pork, and pork belly. The roast pork was a decent char siu. The duck was good. My favorite was the pork belly, which was served at room temperature. Very tasty, but it's a good thing that you only get a small portion with this dish as there's a lot of fat involved. read more

I'm only rating this on 2 visits. And both of those were based on 1 dish. Granted, 1 dish (a measly bowl of soup), which I feel if a Chinese restaurant can't get right needs to question its authenticity. Also, a dish which should be done properly but not cost more than £5. Until only a few years ago this lowly soup, was fairly low on my radar and estimation (in spite of my mother making it for us as children). So it wasn't until relatively recently I appreciated how difficult it is to make really, really well. The Vietnamese have pho - it's so easy to make bad pho. But it's really quite difficult to make good pho. The Chinese wonton noodle soup is also apparently difficult to do really well. Hung's makes a great wonton noodle soup. There are no vegetables in it; It's entirely comprised of broth, noodles and wontons. If done poorly, it can be reminiscent of meatballs in dishwater. If done properly (or well), it's a heartwarming belly-filler that is equally good a snack as a late-lunch tide-over to dinner. As I say, I've been here twice. But I look forward to returning with a group of friends to explore the rest of the menu. I'm confident from their wonton soup that they know what they're doing. Now...can they beat Gold Mine...? read more

Okay so the asian side of me has been missing some good old chinese food since I haven't had for over 6 weeks now that I'm living in Europe! I ordered a lunch box to go, rice with roast pork and duck. I'm not sure how prices go in the UK but 5.8 lb for a small lunch box? It was a bit pricey if you ask me. But then again this is London.. not NYC, not America. I was already happy to be able to eat asian food again so I brushed that aside. The dish wasn't mind blowing or fantastic. But it tasted very authentic, true chinese cuisine at its best. Definitely not that fast food to go crap that serves general tso's chicken and stuff. For some reason, I wasn't really hungry until later at night during my last night in London. I think I was more tired than hungry. Nevertheless, my friend and I ended up looking for a place to eat around 9 pm. We figured we should probably just eat near the hotel we were staying at, W Hotel. There are tons of Chinese restaurants right outside the W. We looked at some of the menus from the outside and then settled at Hung's. I have to say, the price was reasonable compared to other restaurants I've been eating at in London, and it was actually good! My dining experience in London haven't been great to be honest, basically have been eating overpriced mediocre food. I don't mind paying $$ for good food, but the I don't like paying lots of money for food that won't even be good. Well, Hung's vegetable noodle soup just hit the spot. I'm glad it was the last stop of my London trip. Beats all the other fancy expensive restaurants I had been dining with. read more

It is a three floor restaurant with a small entrance. There are also few tables on the entrance floor. When you enter you are told which floor to go. Stairs smell a mix of bleach and oil. Sounds not nice but whenever we visited, the place was always busy. You feel that its a place for tourist groups, fast food taste, very quick service and staff stares at you when you finish your food meaning to leave. Sometimes you even receive the bill without asking. It has extensive menu like the others in Chinatown. Crispy aromatic duck is seriously tasty! But I find the mains oily. After all our visits I can say that the service, quality is descending. read more

I'd visited Hungs today and was 'indicated' to my seat. I chose soya chicken and roast pork on hot rice with a side of stir fry choi sum. With my rice I had 4 pieces of chicken (looked as if this was left over from yesterday) and about 8 pieces of roast pork which cost me £7.50. This dish was tasteless! My stir fry choi sum was overload with chopped garlic and I'd literally had to scrape the garlic on each piece of choi sum so that I could eat it! The stir fry choi sum was delicious - this dish cost me £10 which is very steep. Also don't sit on ground floor as the restaurant had no heating and with the main door frequently opening/closing you will get cold and so would your food! I strongly advise you to sit upstairs, if you still want to visit this restaurant. I wouldn't come here EVER again as the food was expensive and the meat was tasteless - even with the soya sauce on the rice. read more

Decent Cantonese food, and great for a late night bite since they're open late. Great value for the quality and quantity of food you get. Chicken with spring onion was tasty, duck was weird since they made it look like pulled pork instead of slice duck meat. Mapo tofu was returned because there was shrimp in it (which I've never seen before and I'm allergic to), and the fried noodles with chicken was tasty. read more

It looks unimpressive but the crispy duck with lemon is divine! We ate family style - sharing the duck, ginger chicken and cashew beef - all were great but the duck stole the show. We ordered chicken spring rolls that were also excellent. The only hiccup - we had to ask three times for our drinks. I love Hung's, I've been coming here for years, watching it change name, be redecorated and change name back again. It's from the functional school of Chinatown dining, melamine tables that can be wiped down between customers. Like a lot of the Chinatown establishments solo diners looking for a quick fix sit downstairs with larger parties ferried upstairs to the top two floors and bigger tables. The food here is Cantonese and it has one of the best selections of noodle soups for lunch, anything from the usual won ton and roast meats through delectable king prawn dumplings before getting to the more obtuse tripe, tendon and pigs knuckles - all worth a go. Main dishes have the usual standards, although why would you order sweet and sour chicken when prawn stuffed tofu in black bean or ong choy with fermented bean curd were available, let alone starting with spring rolls instead of soft shell crab? Come Chinese New Year they stick on a special menu so it's well worth popping down then for some fat choi (hair fungus), lettuce and pig's trotter. Being jet lagged, I awoke from my sleep very hungry and didn't really want fast food. Looked outside my hotel window and saw this restaurant so I paid a visit. It was 2:30 am, and this place was really lively. Managed to get a seat and ordered a small won ton soup and their special fried rice. All things considered, the meal was quite good. Food also comes out very quickly as there is a high level of turnover here. Will certainly go and pay another visit.. probably in the middle of the night again. read more

Where could be possibly go to raise his spirits? That's right. Stringfellows. But seeing as it's too bloody expensive and he's just spent his last 20 quid on jagerbombs, Hungs will have to do. Always open late and always ready to cook up a feast from an extensive menu that reads like a Chinese phone book. The quality is actually very good considering they mostly cater for pissed up idiots like Big Dave. Taking off one star for the state of the toilets. I was surprised to find only a three stars rating here. But then it turned out to be only one grumpy comment. To me it seems it was a competitor (only one rating so far). We really liked the food and the interior is as shabby as always in a good Chinese. The starters were very tasty and the duck with bone was delicious. We saw them in the window and I was wondering if they were any good for years. Finally I was curious enough to go there this time. I can definitely recommend this restaurant. Cheap is the only thing good about this place. I ordered shredded pork noodles (in soup.) The bowl was filled in an artificial looking red liquid that looked spicey but was almost sweet to taste. Bits of fatty pork floated on the top of the soup, very unappealing. The noodle had a seafood taste and at the bottom of the soup were bits of lean pork. The dish was horrible because it was seafoody, sweet and strangely sour all at the same time! If I am ever made to come again, I will definitely order something else! read more

Absolutely disgraceful management practices. My associates and I arrived craving an Asian cuisine whilst in Picadilly. Upon entering the establishment, we were immediately received by a hostile environment which led to a less than enthusiastic waiting staff who treated us as unwelcome guests to say the least. We decided to leave, but one member of the group was keen on ordering from Hungs. After odering, the employee informed us that in order to pay for our order by card, we would need to purchase a 2 meal minimum. Unhappy with their attitude, we asked to speak with management. We were first sent down a dirty stairwell which led to a filthy kitchen, upon our return, we were told to head up a non-existant stairway, clearly an effort to send us away in a quite insulting fashion. Ive never reviewed on this website, however this service was offensive to say the least and I recommend reviewing other options before settling on this below par establishment. read more

If I could I would give it zero stars out of 5, this is the worst restaurant I've ever been to, The food was completely completely tasteless, although the grease is prominent, The servers are aggressive, rude, and became violent when we didn't want to pay for the 'food' they had served, on a plastic plate for goodness sake. The actual building is horrible, if you are not Chinese you will not have a chance to sit downstairs you will have to climb ugly horrible stairs to an unpleasant first or second floor, grubby rooms falling apart, Don't go here, theres no amazing amazing Chinese restaurants in Chinatown and I've been to most but I would never set foot near here again, the waiters should not be allowed to work in a service industry, they are just appalling animals. read more

Watch out for this place late at night. Friend and I ordered two dishes for take away at 19 pounds and the guy tabbed me at 36 pounds. Confused I asked him why it was 36 and he said he made a mistake and was sorry. Proceeded to "cancel" my last order and then swiped for 19 pounds like it was supposed to be. Checked my CC statement and what do you know, I was still charged one 36 pound charge and the 19 pound charge. Eat shit hung's. read more

This place has the absolute worst customer service I have ever experienced, I was having difficulty breathing and told them, and we asked for a table so that we could sit down, have some water and order food, the guy sent us up 2 floors, they then sent us back down saying they had no tables and refused to serve us, we came back down and there were free tables, the waiter refused to let us sit down and as I felt very unwell a gentleman offered us his table as he had 3 more free seats, after sitting down the waiter said we couldn't sit down even though I was unable to breathe and because we had they completely refused us service and refused that we even order takeaway! This is the worst restaurant I have ever been to, if you could even call it that. read more

I'll have to echo the 'decidedly average' verdict on Hung's. It wasn't bad by any means, but much better is offered in the immediate vicinity. Simply speaking, Hung's doesn't taste fresh. Service was somewhat lacking, too. When our waiter delivered our food, I asked whether they had hot sauce, to which he nodded - and promptly left, never to return. So, we ate our somewhat lacking-in-flavour Chinese lunch sans-hot sauce, and after waiting about half an hour had to track down another waiter to get our check. Anyway, I don't regret trying Hung's, but I certainly won't be returning any time soon. read more

Went for a pre theatre dinner last night and it was as good as can be expected....I have to say I think we ordered lazily and badly as we were in a hurry so went for the 12.50 set menu which was great value but somewhat generic...hot and sour soup...crispy duck...black bean chicken, chilli prawns, stir fried veg and egg fried rice...actually now that I've listed it all it was amazing value but apart from the duck everything was a little gelatinous in that cornflour way that cheap chinese is...havng said that the food tasted fresh and the prawns large and juicy...the sauce was wrong though...the table next us ordered properly, ie a la carte, and their food looked amazing...huge ribs..salt and pepper prawns that looked fresh as a daisy and properly cooked choi sum....I'd go back and do it properly....the service was efficient...even warm and when we left there were q's of people, both chinese (always as good sign) and others waiting for tables....downstairs very basic but the third floor nice....suggest also trying the soup noodles of which there is a vast array....I quite fancied liver and gizzard but my date paled at the thought of it so I gave it a miss. In summary have the set menu if your starving and in a hurry...big portions and duck excellent with 8 pancakes and lots of duck for two but if you have a time order a la carte...it looked worth the wait. read more
