We have been coming here for years. Today is the last day we will ever set foot in this restaurant. We ordered the twin lobster special for each my wife and I. It was actually a great deal at only $19.99. that is the only good thing. Not only did it take over 30 minutes for our steamed lobsters to come, but when my wife cracked the tail off everything in the lobster body was pitch black. Basically that means if you know anything about cooking shellfish which apparently the chef here does not, you would know that that means that the tamale and the row are either undercooked or uncooked. Talk about risking food poisoning? There is no way go back and even just have a soda. Just went to the Hungry Traveler for the second time this summer and it was so good. The prime rib was amazing and the last time I was there I got the haddock au gratin which was also delicious. They did a renovation and added a bar upstairs too. The chef came out and we had a great talk with him. Wow. Disappointed....Ordered take out this morning for my family, spent $60 before tip! They had to first remake the entire order bc they gave us the wrong food, then when they gave us "our food" it was still wrong. I ordered scrambled eggs with an English muffin, and I got a ham and cheese omelette with wheat toast that was half undercooked still runny as can be. My son's western omelet had grilled and raw veggies? And I'm not even going to get started on the bacon mushroom omelet they messed up as well. when I called to complain, ( I may have used a colorful word) Carina at the front desk told me I needed to watch my mouth and she didn't know what to tell me. I came in for the Prime Rib at 5 on a Saturday. Got a booth right away--no waiting. I hadn't been here since the change in ownership, several years ago. Two sizes: 16 oz and 24 oz. I got the biggie, ordered medium rare, for $46. Yeowee! What a gorgeous slab of meat! And butter-tender! I would have enjoyed a little more seasoning, though. But not complaining -- I took most of it home! I am happy when restaurants are so proud of their food that they refuse to skimp on quality or serving size. My husband and I went to eat on a Sunday, no wait, we had a party of two and were seated right away. We were seated, and our waitress Kailey who relayed to us that it was her first day was very polite and attentive. Being a bartender in the industry for 18+ years I understood, and of course we were very kind and patient with her. (Please read full review) We both ordered meals that included the "salad bar" (understocked and not a lot to choose from) but okay, still was fine, greens were fresh and we sat down and ate our salads while waiting for the meals as well as the Salted Caramel Martini I had ordered from their drink menu, during the initial check in with Kailey and drink order. She did let me know this, that the martini was going to be awhile, but 17 minutes is really awhile. She brought the martini over, it was literally half full (in a standard martini glass) with no caramel & sea salt rim as advertised. I felt so badly but did send it back. At this point she did very well and asked if I'd like to speak with a manger, I only said yes bc I knew she probably had no experience with a complaint, being it her first day. The "manager" came over and asked what the problem was. I replied "I'm paying $17 for a drink I'd like a full martini. She replied that "they pour the martini's this way so the waitresses don't spill them on the way to the table" WOW it absolutely should be the other way around I thought, but anyway, I also asked if she could have it made again with the rim like it said on their menu. We literally waited another 15 mins, watched the "manger" who was more of a greeter than a helper, walk around and say hi to customers. I couldn't believe it when she brought the drink back 15 mins later with no rim, & about three quarters of the way full. I asked about the rim and she replied "oh the bartender added caramel to the drink" you could clearly see a huge pile of caramel at the bottom of martini glass. GROSS. That was a wrap on the drink. I had ordered Baked Stuffed Haddock and my husband ordered the Fried Chicken Supreme. We waited well over an hour on our dinners while poor Kailey kept apologizing to us. Right when we were about to call it on the dinners she said it would be up in four minutes, that the Haddock was done and she was just waiting on the chicken. When she finally brought it over the haddock was of course overcooked and The "Fried Chicken Supreme" turns out is a plate of chicken tenders and fries! WOW. At this point we were starving and said we were not paying for the chicken or martini, both of which we did not consume. I felt SO BADLY for the new waitress but the so called manager should have comped the bill, I have for muchhhhhh, much less. Anyway we paid for the haddock we took to go, and the gingerale, tipped Kailey ofc, and left there wicked annoyed, wicked hungry, and most definitely NOT going back. After meeting the "manager" and how she handled everything, it was most definitely a case of VERRRRRRY POOR MANAGEMENT. His fried scallops plate was loaded with scallops (he made the comment himself that other restaurants usually give an abundance of French fries and onion rings and fewer scallops). He was happy!! This is an old-school restaurant. Dated in the best way. I would not change a thing. My sister and I have been coming here for years. They have consistently delicious home style dishes that have been perfected through the years. Their seafood is always fresh and cooked to perfection. There is something for everyone here. The wait staff are excellent, no matter how busy they have been we have always been treated like their only customer. My Sister got fish and chips with mashed potatoes instead of fries, and a side of butternut squash. Yes that picture is all thick white flaky haddock, no fries on that plate. I got the Cajun seafood sauté. Angel hair pasta was not listed, but I asked and they did it. It was nice and spicy with plenty of shrimp and scallops. This is a place that seems like it's been there forever-- kind of a place for old timers. For example, you can get mashed potatoes with gravy with any seafood dish. The food was okay and we were hungry. The prices were a bit high but we were hungry. The seafood was all fine but the ribs my husband ordered looked like they'd been cut off of a brontosaurus. He said he'd never been so scared by his dinner. I would go back just to be waited on by our waitress. A woman straight out of central casting, a waitress you could only get in the Boston area. Their hours say they are open until 9 PM and there were a few other people in there so we took a chance at 745 PM after a special yearly day event we attend. We cancelled our reservations at a place we knew we would have had a lovely time in order to give HT our business. Now we wish they would have turned us away so we could have enjoyed ourselves somewhere else because they clearly wanted to go home. It has a salad bar but they picked that up without even asking us if we wanted anything else from it (it is part of the meal or you pay 7.99 for it) they just picked it up at about 8:05 PM. We were not lingering we were eating as fast as we could but they shut off the music, most the lights and literally cleaning all around us it was clear they wanted us to just LEAVE. We finally just asked for a to go box. Someone kept flipping the lights on and off really fast over and over for like 5 minutes like LEAVE LEAVE LEAVE and we felt so thrown out by 8:25 PM. If you don't want late customers, change your on line hours or warn us. We would have gladly gone somewhere else. Plus, we couldn't relax and talk at our one time per year special outing. The hostess/cleaning lady even laid down in a booth next to us and said she was tired! It was a weird experience. Next year, we will not be going there. I've been going to the Hungry Traveler for many years and I always found it to be excellent. My favorite menu item is the prime rib. The last time I was there was a couple of years ago, and I just read a review from Bill M. from 4/29/23. I was almost afraid to go back after that review, but I did anyway, and I'm so glad!
