A friend recommended Hunan Wok to me and I recently tried it for the first time on a Saturday night. I love that the entrees come with rice or lo mein and an appetizer and I felt like we got a good amount of food for the price. Hunan Wok is a staple of Chinese cuisine in Tewksbury. I definitely second another review I saw on Yelp remarking that it is the better of asian food in the area. It is by and large a takeout spot and viewed by many as such. While I have never dined in, when I walk in for takeout I never see any blaring problems with decor. It's a simple set up with chairs and tables- not too large. My experience with the staff from ordering to receiving my meal has always been positive, quick, and pleasant. The staff works very hard, particularly at rush hour and it shows! If I walk in and order I usually wait no more than 5-15 minutes range, but usually on the lower end of that and it's usually regardless of the time of day. Overall a great hole in the wall spot in the plaza between Salem Road and Route 38. Definitely worth checking out if you are in the mood for Asian cuisine. Pretty good food when we first tried it about 6/7 months ago and the we ordered about a week w and it was even better

I been going here for five years now. I travel from a few towns over since this was the best Chinese spot around compared to all the others. Today I walked in to get a few items for my dinner. Loud hip-hop type music from the TV by the entrance was playing. "Something is different" is the first thing I thought of. It's usually a news program that's on. Walked to the counter, two strange young kids working the cash register, one of which was obviously in training. The owners and regular cooks that are always there, gone. "Yep, they must have changed hands" was my second thought. "Not a good sign." My third thought. Ordered the Pu Pu platter for one, small Roast Pork Chow Mein, and the Singapore Chow Mei Fun. Got home, took out the food from the bag, one of the containers was different, plastic instead of Styrofoam. "DEFINITELY changed hands." Thought number four. The platter looked the same. Opened the Chow Mein, not roast pork anymore, that grayish boiled like pork chunks which I despise. Roast pork has the red edges to it, (Chinese rib sauce). The Chow Mei Fun? No roast pork in that either anymore, not even the gray pork, therefore, more noodles to meat ratio. Ripoff. Plus the variety of different veggies wasn't there, mostly bean sprouts. Took a few bites of the two main dishes, not the same, the Singapore had hardly any Singapore to it, (spicy curry). It was downright bland. The Chow Mein was over cooked, watery, and slimy. I picked out the gray meat and put it aside for the backyard raccoons for later. The dry crispy noodles that top it were gummy, pasty, and stale. Tasted like chalk. Inedible, another wildlife entree. The platter wasn't as good either, the meat didn't taste fresh. No leftovers with this meal! So I guess I'll be on the lookout for a new Asian takeout place, this one is history. Zaijian! Probably the WORSE Chinese Food My Wife & I Have Ever Tasted. Ordered Shrimp Moo Shu, ended up with practically ZERO shrimp and the only vegetables that the dish contained was the cabbage UNDER-COOKED. The dish was awful - even the pancakes were "still in their original package" (commercial packaging). No flavor, no effort to make the dish tasty. My wife ordered Mongolian Beef. No vegetables, just the beef - in a sauce that defied description (tasteless) despite my wife asking for "spicy" at the time we ordered the delivery. I ordered an additional dish - Shrimp Lo Mein - again, practically zero vegetables, tiny amount of shrimp - truly tasteless. The food was delivered in 45 minutes (as promised) but delivered COLD. I know these kind of companies have special thermal bags that keep foot hot or cold. Or, in the case of pizza companies, special vehicles that have warming devices that keep the food "HOT". In our case, neither option was taken. COLD FOOD requiring MICROWAVING to make it even possible to eat. Not tasty, hardly eatable. My wife and I strongly advise staying away from this supposedly Chinese restaurant. They believe they are producing "eatable" food - in reality, nothing they delivered was eatable. For an American / Chinese takeout place, it is spot on. My in-laws, my husband and I ordered a significant amount of takeout from here a few days after the historical snow storm. The crab ragoons are a lot better than I am used to for similar places in Ohio! We got the orange chicken, beef with broccoli, lo Mein, pork fried rice and vegetable chop suey. The portions were large so we were even able to eat a full meal for lunch the next day with the leftovers. Would recommend the crab ragoons and the beef lo mein! read more

We've ordered from here in the past and wanted to try something other than the pupu platter. Got the sesame and genera tsos chicken. It was INEDIBLE! So beyond crunchy that I don't think there was actually any meat? Rice was dry. Will not order from here again. read more

I ordered lunch takeout from Hunan Wok, which is located in a small strip plaza (Tedeschi's/Piezano's Pizza). The place is a typical Chinese takeout place, which is order at the counter with open kitchen and a few tables. I took a look over the menu before ordering. The menu offerings include the usual Chinese dishes, appetizers, pu pu platters (for one oor two people) and chef's specials. Chow foon noodles and pad thai are also on the menu. No MSG. The prices here are reasonable, most dishes under $10, chef's specials $9.95-$14.95. 20 Express Lunch Specials ($5.55 plus tax) are offered 11AM-3PM daily, served with white rice or pork fried rice and appetizer choice. 20 Combination Platters ($7.95 plus tax) served with pork fried rice & appetizer and 10 Combination Appetizers ($8.50 plus tax) served with white rice or pork fried rice are also offered. For takeout, I decided on the L17 Chicken Lo Mein with pork fried rice and egg roll, which was ready in under 10 minutes. The portion of food was good for the price. The lo mein had plenty of soft boneless chicken strips and mix of vegetables tossed with firm noodles, a bit oily. The pork fried rice was firm with small roast pork pieces, egg, & scallions. For our work holiday luncheon, we decided on Hunan Wok. We compiled a typed list of what everyone wanted and brought it the day before, since we needed to pick up shortly after opening. When we arrived, the entire order was assembled and waiting for us, complete with names on each container and the typed list with each item checked off. DON'T EAT HERE!!! I ordered a pupu platter from them.. when I got home, a chicken teriyaki was COVERED in hair.. I did not eat any of the platter, and attempted to return it.. they told me that I can't prove that it was their hair and that it wasn't their problem.. RIDICULOUS!! We were tired from all the sight seeing and just wanted something simple for take out. Voila...chinese take out...aint that novel. The broccoli and beef was tasty and flavored like the Chinese restaurants in Monterey Park. The kung pao chicken was also flavored well. The peanuts were not soggy and soft..but hard and crunchy. The lo mein was average as were the egg rolls. For being 30 miles from downtown Boston Chinatown, the meal was quite decent. 4 stars for take out in the suburbs of Boston where Chinese food can be awful. read more

i ordered food today, december 31st at 3pm and was told an 8pm pickup time. i started calling the restaurant at 8pm to check on the status of my order to have them not answer the phones at all, i tried and tried (as did a bunch of other people as it was busy most of the time) after more than an hour of calling (i got through and got it to ring at least 25-30 different times) however, they never answered!!! now i send my husband down to see what's going on and he proceeds to tell me there's 50+ people here waiting for food!!!!!!! it's 9:30 now so he is in line and walks up the window only to see that they took the phone off the hook (so they didn't have to deal with us angry people)! hubby waited.......and waited.......now it's 10:00 and the popo show up......they have to stop serving sit down customers at 9:30 and takeout at 10pm! so now it's after 10pm, on new years eve and all restaurants close at 10! hunan wok is well aware of the regulations instead of informing us when we would have had enough time to be able to order food elsewhere! what did hunan wok do in response they took the phone off the hook and avoid and ignored all of us leaving all of our families without food on new years eve!!!!! this was undoubtedly the most despicable, unprofessional, unethical, disgraceful acts i have ever heard of a company inflict upon their patrons anywhere, ever!!!!! i have been a loyal customer (ordering at least once or twice a month) every new years eve for the last 15 years and will never order from them again! i may even sue them because what they did do my family and the 50 other people (no, sadly that is not an exaggeration) is completely unacceptable and you should be held accountable!!!!!! how can you justify your actions? why couldn't you just answer the phone at 8pm when i could have still gotten food for my family? I do not usually write reviews however this place was so DISGUSTING I felt the need to let others know. I am in town for vacation and my hotel gave us a menu as they deliver. We ordered steamed veggies, "Mongolian" Beff, Spring rolls and Veggie "Pad Thai". The Mongolian Beef was not only the worse cut if beef I have ever had, it also wasn't favored at all. They took cheap beef and fried it until it was burnt and added over cooked white onions. The container was mostly white onions. The Pad Thai tasted like they cooked noodles then squeezed some lime on it and threw in a few some steamed veggies. There was no other flavor or sauce even though it is described as sweet and spicy. The spring rolls were fried which on the West Coast are unfriend shrimp or pork rolls wrapped in rice paper. These were just plan egg rolls, which is also the menu. I ordered a pu-pu for 2 and when I got home and started eating it I realized instantly it was the worse I have ever had. All had a funny taste and was definitely not fresh food. I honesty thought about going back there and dumping it out in front of their door. Board of health should check into the quality of food they are serving there. Waste of 22 bucks. Moved into Tewksbury a month ago and started looking for Chinese restaurants. I came upon Hunan Wok and ordered. I was so disappointed with the whole order. Pork fried rice was very dry, crab Rangoon was burnt, chicken fingers were chewy. That was the first and last time I will get food from Hunan Wok read more

Was told that this place was good so checked it out on New Years Eve Day for Lunch to Go. First of all they are not allowing combination orders today which I understand as its one of the busiest days of the Year for Chinese Joints that said, they would not even allow me to order Small orders which is just plain wrong, ripping people off. I ordered Beef Teriyaki which was the only above average item. Beef was tender and tasty. Kung Pao Chicken was mild and very average, as were the Peking Ravioli, both edible but average. The Pork Fried Rice was bland and was one of the worst that I have ever had. I would not go back here, suggest looking elsewhere. FYI they also do not deliver on New Years Eve. read more

Hunan Wok has to be the better of the chinese places in the area (as I will only eat chinese food from here). The service does need a tune up. I hate how on the weekends there is a eight year old boy answering the phones and working behind the counter. I am so surprised they have gotten away with it for so long. The food is pretty decent. The rice is firm, not mushy, the lo mein is OK, it used to be a lot more flavorful, the general gau's chicken is pretty good, but I am not sure if it is actually chicken. Sometimes the chicken is really tough and too fried. All in all, I have tried pretty much all the chinese food places in the area, and this one is 5 stars compared to those places. read more

We have gotten take-out from here twice. The food was average for Chinese places in the area. However, when we got the food home, we realized we had been charged wrong--we ordered the small sizes on the chicken and broccoli, mixed vegetables, and spring rolls, but were charged for the large on all three of them. Again, the food was just okay--nothing horrible, nothing great. I was just disappointed that they overcharged us by quite a bit. read more

Hunan wok is usually my go to chineese spot in tewksbury, but unfortunately this time my experience was not so great, not only was my food 25 min late, the OWNER of the establishment who took my order wrote down the wrong address (poor delivery guy) running around just to find out he's at the wrong house. I was hungry at work tonight so i ordered delivery from Hunan Wok. I ordered the Sesame Chicken with Egg rolls and Crab Rangoon. The food arrived very quickly in about 20 minutes or so. The Crab Rangoon was excellent. The Egg rolls however disappointed. They were completely tasteless and bland. The chicken was pretty good until i got to the pieces at the bottom and then they started tasting like melted Styrofoam.
