I order from here constantly for my parents and whenever I'm in town visiting too. The food is always fresh, delicious and fast. Prices are fair as well. I love that the lady who answers the phone never has difficulty understanding me and she's always very fast and precise. We love this place. I sat here for dinner one night after a mandatory refresher class for MTA employees at Coney Island Yard, Avenue X. I was absolutely famished and had never dined here before so I was hopeful for a decent experience. My crispy fish and fried rice meal wasn't exciting or the best I've ever had but it hit the spot. The food was just tasty enough, fresh and served up hot. I must say that the crispy fried noodles were super light and almost addictive. Worst Chinese food I have ever had, totally flavorless and not even exaggerating .Even adding salt didn't help and Szechuan beef supposed to be spicy in the first place. Not even any sauce in the container to try to mix it in. No pork in the rice. Soup does not come in the half pound container like every other restaurant but in the quarter pound one, and it was all broth in the hot and sour soup except for literally one slice of a mushroom. They don't even give you noodles to go with the soup. I was looking at the menu before I went in on allmenus.com and the lunch specials were four dollars and change on their website and when I went inside the restaurant to order the lady was very, very nice but the price was $8.15, not 4.00 and they only accept cash. read more

Hunan Cottage has been my family's go-to Chinese takeout place for years. Their food's quality is a notch above other takeout places in the area. And don't be fooled either, it's nice inside if you want to eat there (when that's allowed again). We always seem to order soup, scallion pancakes and lo mein. Their chef's specialty dishes are all really good options. Every dish has plenty of meat and fresh vegetables. There's a ton of options and you can't really go wrong. Prices are just right, too. For Chinese takeout in Gravesend, Hunan Cottage is a great option. P.S. - Our last takeout order was a large one at about $70. Our order came 15 minutes after I called! BEST. CHINESE. FOOD. EVER. Okay. The prices are almost as amazing as the food. My absolute favorite thing to get is the Sesame Shrimp dinner combo. It comes with a choice of soup and an egg roll. The portion of shrimp is not the same as the sesame chicken, (let's be real, shrimp is more expensive BUT the shrimp are pretty big, cooked perfectly, and filling so I refuse to complain but had to mention it) Both the chicken and shrimp are crispy, saucy, and flavorful. It hits the spot every time. The wonton soup is delicious. The broth is not loaded with salt, although the wontons were kinda skimpy on the filling last time) The egg rolls are really good too! Not oily, the wrapper is crispy and light not chewy like the usual egg roll suspects. Let's talk about their pork fried rice. SO GOOOD. They also serve fried noodles and yummy dipping sauce on the house, along with a big pot of hot tea that they put on the table to serve yourself. And a sliced orange/fortune cookies with your check. This is the quintessential old school Brooklyn Chinese albeit it isn't here that long. I love this place- $5.50 lunch special- check. The noodles here and the toxic orange duck sauce are outstanding . The old folks from the 'hood love this joint at lunch and with good reason. I went with an old friend of my mom's. The wonton soup has fresh wontons and you can taste the ginger mixed with pork. The mains are a tad less exciting, but still a good value and quite fresh. Found this restaurant after a meeting in Brooklyn and wanted to get takeout to eat later back in eastern LI. Owners were friendly and gracious, and we were able to use their very clean restroom, even though the restaurant was closed to diners. When we got home, one dish was missing. I called the next day, and since we were not going to be going back to Brooklyn in the near future, the owner offered to send me a check. Not sure many restauranters would have offered that accommodation, and I received the check promptly. The food was much better than what usual neighborhood Chinese American restaurants offer. This is my "go to" Chinese lunch special spot. I work in sales and when I'm out in my territory, I look for the best and most affordable spots for lunch. This place hits the spot and always under $10. The lunch specials range from $5.50-6.50 I believe. I've had the chicken chow mein, shrimp and broccoli and chicken with mixed vegetables. The cashier is nice and the food is cheap and delicious. I've taken my coworkers here and they also have enjoyed the food. I LOVE THIS PLACE!!! Some of the best chinese food i've ever had. The sesame chicken and boneless spare ribs (in a delicious honey sauce) are my two favorites. They used to deliver just a lunch special (im only a few blocks away) which was fantastic as most places have $10 minimum. Not sure if they still do this, but more than likely. $15 minimum on card FYI! The woman working there is always really friendly and nice. They have plenty of tables to sit which are a little more upscale than you're typical american-chinese joint. It's definitely not as dingy. They also have really unique noodles if you dine in which are bigger and more flavorful than typical chinese noodles. Definitely must try this place cause the food is just great! read more

My wife and I decided to give this place a try after reading about the experiences of many people raving about how good it was. We arrived for lunch, which is super inexpensive, 5-6$ an order with soup and fried rice. We ordered the spare ribs for an appetizer and they were perfectly cooked and glazed. The soups were great, my wife ordered the sesame chicken and too her delight it was absolutely delicious and she gets very picky over her sesame chicken. Thanks to my fellow yelpers I have finally found my go to Chinese take out!! I was looking for good Chinese in the area and was constantly disappointed. This place really delivers simple yet delicious food. Most of the time when I order Chinese take out half of it sits around and I end up taking it to work as left overs, well not this time! I actually ate the entire lunch special beef with brocolli and finished it off with the egg roll. My son wanted beef cho fun and most places have it so dry so I asked them to cook it with sauce and they did and it was excellent. We absolutely love the food and prices here. There are just two problems which need to be mentioned because they are things I wish I'd known in advance. 1. This one is a big deal. I can't ever order to-go from here or take home my leftovers because they don't know how to package it without making a big mess. I've carried the bag home on the bus, or even in the car, and found big puddles of brown sauce on the floor and on my clothes. Last time, my Mei Fun was completely ruined because it got filled with brown sauce from another dish. If the dish is too wet for a dry container, it should be in a soup container. That was a major letdown last time, $40 worth of food to-go and half of it had to be thrown out because of the soggy mess. Consider this a dine-in restaurant for this reason. The food is much more delicious on the plate. 2. Not as big of a deal, but still annoying. We love it so much here, we told our relatives about it. Now they go there as often or more often than we do. One time, we were too sick to go out, and we had them bring us home our regular order. The well-meaning employees recognized the order and told our family that we eat there often, and always come in right before closing. Which got us scolded by family for going out late and for eating so late. I'm sure the people who work here didn't mean to cause any trouble for us. Since there is no way to know whose family will argue over some small detail that you provided, it's better to not mention things like this to a diner's family. It can cause trouble for no reason. My earlier review describes the food in greater detail, so I don't need to repeat myself. Very good stuff. It would be nice if they cut the beef into smaller pieces in the stir-fry. They use frsh, crisp and colorful vegetables in abundance, which is a refreshing change from other older Chinese-American style restaurants, who might rely on thick sweet sauces and meat-heavy dishes instead. Overall a very fine, affordable choice for lunch or dinner in the Gravesend / Avenue X area. read more

Love it!!! Staff is wonderful except that one girl who answers the phone on the weekends who can't seem to get anything straight for delivery orders. I always ask to speak to the mgr and that helps. On the week days, no problems! Our delivery order has always been correct. Their vegetable selection is nice. Fried rice is always great and their Lo Mein is a winner. Order a Large Chicken Noodle mixed with Egg Drop and experience pure Chinese food bliss! :) They make those wide crunchy noodles right there homemade. Order a bag to go with the soup, they are FANTASTIC! You have to request they send them instead of the skinny noodles and they will for free, but if you order a bag for like a dollar, they send a big bag. Their Cantonese Chow Mein with chicken and shrimp is out of this world. It comes with its own little styrofoam container of skinny crunchy noodles. You can order their Cantonese Chow Mein with no shrimp as I do and it is great. Best Veggie Chow Mein around. Broccoli in Garlic Sauce rocks! They make wicked steamed or fried veggie dumplings and veggie egg rolls. Regular egg rolls are good, too. Husband loves their hot and sour soup (it's made with chicken broth no pork) and he loves their sliced roast pork with sauce on the side. He likes their pork with Chinese vegetables, as well. They make a great house special combination vegetables. Their steamed platters are passable. One thing, I sometimes question the type of chicken meat they use. The meat they use in the Cantonese Chow Mein is great and so in the Chicken Noodle Soup. HOwever, sometimes in other dishes it can be dry and not taste as well. Usually I order vegetarian from them so it doesn't really matter to me. Their delivery is FAST FAST FAST! Let me tell you! They made special arrangements originally to deliver all the way to where we live in Coney Island near the Aquarium. They've continued to deliver to us :) We get our orders in 20 minutes no kidding! The place right next to us, Eastern Chinese, takes up to 45 minutes to 1 hour!!! Go figure and their food is not nearly as wonderful as Hunan! Eastern Chinese always used to forget things like oh, fried rice, egg rolls and would always say, "Next time, next time!" Now, if I wanted my food next time (like the crunchy noodles to go with Chow Mein or the white rice to go with it) I would ORDER NEXT TIME!!!! They would always forget something essential and annoying to be without! Once, they didn't send any sauces. Once we got someone else's Shrimp with Lobster Sauce and Fried Rice! Yeeesh! Hot-Sour soup was as named, steamed vegetable dumplings very good, Pan-Fried noodles (house special) well seasoned, crispy and full of meats & seafood, Sesame Beef YUM, Roast Pork Lo Mein was the best I've had in a long time and Steamed Broccoli was fresh, crispy and very tasty ... so, all-in-all, a meal that filled us all and recalled growing up with Chinese-American food. Downside, less than attentive service (you have to constantly ask for more water, more noodles, "where's my ginger ale", etc) ... the food is worth it, but if they spent just a little more time on service, they'd get a five! There are two Chinese restaurants closed to my place. Hunan Cottage is the best one among the two. I sometimes order food from Hunan Cottage only when I am running out of option. The Chinese food is alright. Not very good but acceptable. When ever I ordered for pick up and delivery, this restaurant never give me any forks, spoons, or chopsticks. It's annoying to keep asking them when ever I order. I guess they just want to save extra 20 cents from each takeout customer. They charge tax. As I know, some Chinese restaurants don't charge tax.
