It's really hit or miss here with their customer service and because of that I avoid going in unfortunately. A couple staff are very helpful and knowledgeable but there's another that is rude and has made me feel ignored. Literally, helped another customer that came in AFTER me and also ringed her up before me even though I was clearly standing in line and ready to check out. This staff person also told me in a rude way that I could always order online. Which I have I the past and I've also ordered over the phone and just picked up my items. However, I believe this store would potentially increase sales in store with improved customer service. I've spent a lot of money here but I almost would rather drive to arcata to moonrise herbals because at least I feel greeted and treated kindly. read more

I normally get my tea in Arcata but stopped here. After she looked me up and down a woman said what do you need I said I was just going to grab some tea she said well no, I'll get it for you. I said ok but was looking at herbs first ,she said it's over there. (Tone ) And I said I know but can I look here first. She said what are you looking for and exasperated I said I'm just looking. It felt like she wanted me out of the store asap. I came in with my 2 teens maybe she doesn't like teenagers in her store if that's not the case then she is just rude. The staff is always rude and unwelcoming whenever I come into the store (the old lady with dark wavy hair, owner possibly?). From the looks of the many poor reviews, the owner has yet to take any action to address their poor customer service. OK, I used to love this place until some rude chick who works there kind of ruined it for me. NOT taking any herbs from them...ever. A month or so ago I went in there looking for some Simplers botanical Aromatherapy sprays. they have them. I found the one I wanted but was perplexed by the price. I told them another local store has them for about two dollars less. I mentioned it to the staff. This one staff member said "Well good for them for selling it. So what." Uh, price match? LOVE Humboldt Herbals! When I lived in Eureka, I bought a lot of tea blends and herbs and tinctures, for both myself and my pets. I use their Aches and Pains tincture for my 13 year old dog who suffers from severe arthritis. The combination of that, plus the pet arthritis powder, has kept him limp-free and healthy for several years. Now that we have moved to Marin Co, I order all of the stuff online which is great! Love this place!! I used to live up in Eureka & come here all the time. Coming back for a visit, had to see it and get my spirulina, of course. It's no longer upstairs which is good for those of us who move a little slower. Love this place and eventhough no longer living in the area; I still order my spirulina and other teas from here. I avoid shopping at Humboldt Herbals because I don't like the way I feel when I shop there---primarily because the staff always seem aloof, indifferent, and somewhat hostile. It makes me sad, because this space should be a healing and loving space. The new space is so much better since they have room to put out more stuff! Now there's more cooking spices, which are super cheap and you can smell before you buy :) They have a great selection of loose leaf teas to buy in bulk, and they frequently come up with new mixes. There's also a large selection of bulk herbs if you want to mix your own. The ladies behind the counter are always nice. They have a new free hot tea every day for customers to sample, and a monthly tea club for a free ounce of tea a month and 10% off bulk herbs and teas. read more

I recently went to Humboldt Herbals to see what they had to offer. I had a tea phase in college and was interested in making a few blends I used to enjoy. I had not been to Humboldt Herbals since they moved from upstairs in Imperial Place. I was pleased to find a large selection of herbs, not only allowing me to make my old blends, but I found some interesting new items as well. My best score was actual szechuan peppers. Now these are not what you thought szechuan peppers were, but actual citrus family seed pods. Awesome culinary experience that I was not expecting. I think of them as "cold peppers". Anyway, the woman who helped me out was very nice and quick to assist me. Continuing to give me her attention even as the store became busy. I will be back soon for more goods and general exploration. read more

I live in Arcata and have No problem making the travel to Humboldt Herbals in Eureka. They have everything you need and then some. Its a great place to buy books or other gifts and you can always get help from one of the many great herbalists they have there. Best selection around! The comment below sounds like someone was angry for not getting the price they wanted. Times are rough for all buisnesses right now and Im sure they mark products up as little as they can. As soon as I found this place I threw away all my box tea bags! The loose leaf teas are great ranging from all sorts of herbals to a veriety of green and black teas. Service is the only real drawback for me as it is not consistent ranging from fantastic to a little stuck up. Might be because I ask alot of questions about the health benefits of the herbal teas including how they work in the body which none of them seem to know they just now the effects and being certified herbalist they are accurate in that. Will soon expand to spices and herbs as they are as great a deal as the teas so look for another review soon. read more

This went from a wow! place to a meh place mainly due to the staff. What is a wonderful sun drenched place with great herbs, literature and goodies and loving staff became a place that feels exclusive and snippy ... its as if they don't have room for others that don't conform to their image or ideas. There is no sharing of information, the empathy/compassion seemed to have dried up. When I started my herbal journey 30 years ago there was a much more loving/caring/sharing. Now I am being met with an attitude that I do not understand and is not part of the herbal culture I grew up with. If I need something quick, I'll make a purchase there but otherwise, I can purchase from Mountain Rose direct. read more

Poor customer service. No acknowledgement when I walked in and up to the counter even though 3 women were working. No hello or can I help you find something, nothing. An employee also recommended to take an herb internally that I know for a fact is poisonous when ingested, so I'd also have to say the employee wasn't knowledgeable. I've been to many herbal stores and have never had this negative of an experience. Unless their staff changes drastically I wouldn't recommend this shop to anyone who needs help finding something. read more
