We saw this store last night at dinner when it was closed. Despite the mixed reviews on Yelp, we went today and were SO glad we did. One of my all time favorite shops. We found so many items there. The staff was very friendly, welcoming and offered to help us find whatever we needed. They patiently answered all of our questions and clued me into things that I didn't even know existed. Two of the employees told us of how they use some of the different teas,and one of them wrote me up a recipe with pictures! Best part is they can ship anywhere. As we're just traveling through, this is fabulous, as I'll be able to get onto their website at home and order what we need. They also said their website has helpful tips and information. I highly recommend this shop and would visit again any time we're back in the area. read more

Such a cute/fun store to browse through, they have a little bit of everything "woo woo" as I like to say lol the walls of fresh herbs was so cool! You can purchase loose leaves individually, mix them, or mix them with other ingredients to make a bath salt or body butter. I have interacted with the owner, and her employees for a couple of years now and have always been treated with nothing but kindness and respect. All of the staff I have ever spoken with are knowledgeable and will offer suggestions, advice and help if you ask. The energy within the store is apparent when you enter, relaxed, serene and peaceful all come to my mind when I'm there and calm is all I've ever experienced - call it new age, hippie, free thinking, spiritual, or what have you - this is a great local, independent store. Literally the worst customer service imaginable. I wish I could give this place negative stars. After getting bad advice from an employee who failed to listen to my needs, I ended up being sickened by the products I bought. When I attempted to return it, I was subjected to an intense inquisition by the same employee, who treated me like some kind of thief trying to scam her. She was so incredibly disrespectful that I left the store shaking with anger. A manager called me later and I was able to return the items, but only after every single employee in the store (including the owner) treated me like subhuman scum, just because I tried to make a return. I stood around for 10 minutes before someone asked if I needed help, and once they figured out who I was, the psycho inquisitor employee was sent out "on lunch." I don't know if it was for her protection or mine. This is clearly a family affair or a money laundering operation. There's no other explanation for why they are still in business, considering their customer service is abysmal and they don't guarantee their products. Just love this little store on the Plaza, been going there since I lived in Arcata, so about 15 years now. Now that I've moved south, I miss their tea selection and all the natural remedies they carry there. Everyone is very knowledgeable and I've never left because I couldn't find something. When I was there this past weekend I got myself a new neti pot and a dropper bottle of nasal wash. They had such a cute selection of pots! I'll be taking back the cheesy plastic one that I got at CVS. I do wish, though, that they didn't stop carrying the Moonrise tees and sweatshirts. I went in this time really wanting a tee but found out that they don't do them anymore. I guess they weren't selling well? They also used to carry the full line of Kiss My Face makeup and they don't have that anymore either. :( Oh well, I will still go every time I am up there. read more

My children and I went to this place and we spent a great deal of time in there. The employees were very helpful and answered our questions. We went there for some flower essence, teas and any other thing we could find to help us on our wholesome healing journey. We discovered the bookshelf with all of its wealth of info and this where we got caught up in the plethora of information. I picked up a handcrafted silver moonstone ring from a local artisan sold at this shop. It's a place where you are immediately comforted by the aromatherapy oils, herbs and many healing modality tools available. I keep trying this place and it's always a rude snobby dismissive person, the owner is even always weird. Bad advice combined with careless customer service. They're only nice & helpful to a certain type of person & seem like classic narcissist. I bought some Calendula and it was filled with chicken feathers. This was suppose to be a cure for my dogs pink eye. It's amazing an herbalist store owner didn't recommend Colloidal Silver for doggy pink eye. Herbalist with a personality complex. There's a complete lack of diversity in who they hire in the past 20yrs I've lived here. They seem extremely bias/discriminatory. Research herbs you need & buy them from your local organic/natural grocery store, online or Humboldt Herbals (way better, and they actually care about their customers!). read more

Really unique place- they created an atmosphere of beauty and charm. Virtually any, and every, type of herb is available for you to inspect, and buy. The people working there are knowledgeable and charming, and happy to help. The quality of herbs are the highest- and the crystals, oils, incense etc. make you feel like you're in another world. read more

There is/was a woman there who was rude to me, in front of another staff member who gave me a look of surprise as I gave her, when the former woman was ringing me up and being condescending. Because of it, I stopped going in as much because I felt uncomfortable. I don't need to be talked down to. I've been in management and the way she responded to me when I asked a question and pointed out she didn't ask if I was a part of the birthday club they have, was something she should have apologized for, but didn't. I/m not a hippie. I di grow up in Humboldt county though. I'm not into herbs as medicine. This is just to let you know that I am the average Jane. I come here for the tea. They have an amazing assortment of teas from herbal to green to black and blackberry black tea. My favorite is the pumpkin pie blend of rooibos. I wish I could have the mocha latte tea, but alas I am allergic to almonds. It smells like the real deal, just without the crazy kick that espresso has (caffine makes me jittery). The prices are by the oz. and fantastic. More expensive than Lipton but it tastes far better. Plus store brand tea bags are usually tea "dust" anyway. You can also get essential oils, spices and hard to find herbs for cooking (all dried). Try it out. Don't be scared by the hippie decor. You'd be in for a pleasant surprise. read more

Don't just listen to dumb hippies recommending this place, I drink heavily and use meds, that damage my organs as a side effect, for medical reasons, i went here because they are knowledgeable and helpful. This place carries supplements that can be stacked on normal vitamins to increase effective "healing" (for lack of a better word.) Also, they got herbs to intensify anyone's substance use in a legal way. Be safe have fun! read more

I hadn't been in Moonrise Herbs in years but I went in the other day because I was in Arcata and needed some dandelion root. I also happened to be having severe stomach cramps that day. The young woman who helped me was very sweet and took time to look in several reference books to figure out what would be most helpful. I ended up with an already prepared tincture to take right away and then she made a custom essential oil blend to rub on my stomach. Both remedies were helpful and I was feeling pain free within a couple of hours. read more

Any place that offers free tea while I shop earns five stars in my book, but delicious tea aside, Moonrise Herbs is pretty cool. Cracked your old neti pot? Pick up a new one here! Going through early menopause? Moonrise has some mystery herbs to tame those hot flashes. And they have a salad bar (?!), which I have yet to try, but it looks surprisingly delicious. I recently took a friend in to Moonrise because her brother was sick, and I thought we could get some herbal remedies. i normally love going in here but the girl working, with reddish hair and short bangs was extremely rude and unhelpful. She never greeted us or asked if we needed any help, and when I made a mistake when packaging the herbs she got an extreme attitude. I felt like we didn't belong in there, even though I am a trained and educated herbalist myself. It's a shame this place has such a horrible employee, as me and my friends will not ever be going back. Time to get a better employee! read more

Today I made two visits here. With my first, I scoped some pricey items I wanted to purchase. When I came back for these, I picked up a book while my sister browsed the teas. I set the book down after leafing through it a little bit and the manager (an older woman with obvious attitude) scooped it up. On her way to the back, she asked if I was done with it. An odd question, I felt, and replied, "I guess I'm done looking at it." Minutes later, a male employee told me I was now required to buy the book because of a crease the manager found after taking it from me. I'm still examining the book and cannot find any markings other than a fold in the back cover, which was already there when I picked it up. There were no signs indicating a you-read-it-you-buy-it policy and when I addressed this with the male employee, he said that this is as common as 'no shirt, no shoes, no service.' Needless to say, after being forced to purchase a book that I did not damage, I chose not to buy the ring and tarot cards I came back for. What's more is that I find it odd and disrespectful that the manager chose not to directly communicate with me, which made the situation more uncomfortable. Purely based on the poor customer service here, I will no longer support this business and do not recommend doing so for anybody else. read more

I previously rated this place with 5 stars, but after my last experience, I'm not impressed. I went in for some essential oils, and asked the older lady at the front desk if she could direct me to the tea tree oils. She said they sell some by the batch for a much better price than the bottled kind, and told me to wait there while she got some for me. I smiled and said "okay, thank you!" In an extremely polite way. After about 5 minutes I see her return from the back room, I walked towards her assuming that she had gotten me my tea tree oil like she said she would. Instead, she walked right past me and started chatting with an employee for another 10 minutes or so. Finally, I politely ask her if she could get the tea tree oil for me, and she goes and takes another 5 minutes before she comes back out with the tea tree oil. I'm already slightly annoyed because I've been waiting on there for 20 minutes, despite the fact that there were only like two other customers in there. I also ask her for some frankincense, which is almost 20 dollars- pretty expensive for an essential oil and you can get them from Humboldt herbals for 16 dollars. Anyway, today I realized that she SOLD ME A HALF EMPTY TESTER of frankincense!!!! It's a shame because so many of the other employees are so nice, but this lady has a nasty soul, sort of reminiscent of Candice from Portlandia except not funny. Anyway, go to Humboldt herbals, NOT moonrise herbs! read more

I feel bad for people that are not familiar with most herbs. From all the times that I've been there most of the employees don't offer any help. And I've never even been greeted or anything just stared at. Especially weird vibe from the redhead...poor girl needs to look deeply into her suffering and probably drink more tea herself to lighten up. this place is alright. it is overpriced unfortunately and, like with many herb stores i've been to, the workers give off a strangely pretentious vibe. As though you're not worthy of being in their shop or you are treated like an idiot. Aside from that, a pretty decent selection. Wish they would change out some of their items because I've seen the same pillows, necklaces, and fairy items that no one wants for a year now. A few months ago I purchased their in-store essential oil creation (you choose the oils and they mix it in a container for you) and I almost burst out laughing when I was told it would be $20 for a few ounces of pretty much straight coconut oil... It barely smelled like the oils and I will never recommend this service to anybody. I get that the "labor" of shaking a few essential oil bottles into a container is going to cost me something but this was outrageous. I would rather buy these oils on amazon and just do it myself. At least then it would smell right. I don't need the convenience of being able to just walk down the street for items I can wait 3-6 days to get in the mail for literally at least half the price. read more

After being the standard by which all other herbs stores are compared, as well as being a store I'd travel to Arcata for when I lived out of the area, we both got a little laxidasical and, well, ... I purchased a bottle of rose attar ($$yikes!) that was 4/5ths empty and the contents were solid. Holding the bottle to a bright light would have helped us both--them by checking inventory and me by being 'buyer beware'. Still the place to go for bulk herbs and books! Haven't tried the food but it smells yummy. read more

To the owner of Moonrise, you should be aware that you have a very rude employee working for you. She is this older woman probably the oldest one working there . I don't know her name but she practically chased me and my partner out of there. We had been standing at the bracelet section for awhile reading all the meanings for the stones and trying them on and deciding on which we should get and then we transferred over to the section of rocks and necklaces across the room and we're looking then she says from across the store "can I help you guys with something? You two are sketching me out. You seem like you're wandering around lost. You're tripping me out. Are you just extremely high or something?" I was extremely shocked! I replied so confused-"uuuhhh no. We're just looking." We were just a calm couple seeking some nice bracelets for my birthday. I had some picked out already but I literally put them back right away and was just like "lets go. That lady just ruined it and put out some bad energy. I don't want anything from this place." Way to lose customers and business. This was so out of the blue it made her seem like she was tripping on some hallucinogens that made her unstable. I don't want to ever go in there again. She was very very rude to us. I loved that store and would go in on a regular basis to look for gifts and herbs but I will not support this. read more

I love this place, whether I'm going in for something specific (usually tea or bath salt related) or to poke around the cute candles. I will admit, however, that the employees are often very rude. Love the stuff, hate the service. I once asked if I could leave a donation change jar for a charity drive on the counter. They pointed towards the already existed charity change get jar that I hadn't seen for a kid with cancer and pretty much told me my charity wasn't worthy of being next to the kid with cancer. Like jeeze, just trying to do some good, not steal money from another charity drive. "Sorry, we don't really have counter space for another jar, see this one's already here for right now" would have been just fine, no problem. You don't have to make me feel guilty for not noticing the first jar and act like I'm some crappy person who wants to upstage a small child with cancer. Wow. Just wow. read more
