    Best dog ever... 2004-2017
    Kimmie R.

*sigh* I met my dog there in 2004, and my cat there in 2009, and I am very grateful that I adopted them from a no kill shelter providing more room for a dog in need. Unfortunately, the most amazing dog I've ever had passed away after a long healthy life of 13 1/2 years. My whole soul hurts, but I'm glad we met. I will never forget the day I strolled into the humane society being completely unaware of what I was getting into but being committed to having a pet. If you are completely committed to the mission of raising and caring for a pet throughout their life please consider the humane society of Munster.

    Adoption is where it's at!

We adopted our second kitty from the Humane Society in Munster in October 2010. Let me be perfectly frank with you; that crazy cat lady? That could be me. I feed a number of "outdoor loveys" (much to the chagrin of our neighbors) and have a permanent soft spot in my heart for adopting special needs animals. My other kitty, a super chatty Oriental Short Hair, was adopted from a breeder and in need of a friend to...well..."talk" to. ;) I was hugely impressed with the Munster Humane Society. The facility was super clean and the staff caring and knowledgeable. This Humane Society is home to a number of cats--not just kittens--and often offers discounts for adopting an older kitty or sibling set. In any case, we walked around for awhile and met the kitties before eventually coming upon a kitty who completely stole our hearts. Paperwork filled out, short interview conducted, and we anxiously awaited the news as to whether or not we would be accepted as future adoptive parents. A week later we received the call and raced to liberate our newest kitty compatriot. The Humane Society of Munster is an excellent organization where all animal residents (there are a number of guinea pigs, hamsters, ferrets, etc available for adoption if that is your thing) are treated with love and compassion. If you are ever in the situation to adopt, you should make your way to the Humane Society of Munster.

Am I home? Yes, you are at your forever home!

Looking for a pit mix. They got it. They are over packed with animals that need a forever home. They really do CARE for their animals. One of the dogs did find a forever home with us!

The tech (I don't remember her name) - but I would like to thank her for her caring and compassion, her constant checking on Pearl and I to make sure we were ok. She also took all of the info and presented to the Dr. which was very concise and complete. Dr. Rodriquez was also great - she was also compassionate and thorough. Never made me feel like she needed to move on - she talked in terms I understood and gave info on what she was going to do and diagnosis. I thank her for being so compassionate and waiting until I was able to stop crying before she proceeded. Thank you to both of these women - I can't say enough good about them and would definitely come back again. We waited about an hour and 45 minutes. The veterinarian was personable and examined Bentley. He provided 2 options to determine a diagnosis. We decided to have x-rays, blood and fecal tests, etc. to obtain a diagnosis. It took another hour and a half of waiting for the process completion. The cost was pretty steep at $965; however, I can't imagine not doing everything I can to help one of my dogs who becomes ill. I care deeply for them (I have 2 dogs) and vowed to care for them when I got them. Some would call me crazy but that's how I feel. I'm committed to helping them whenever possible. The good news is the tests are negative. Bent has food allergies and tracheotomy issues. We are going to put a body collar on him and remove everything from around his neck. I am then going to change his diet to ensure no foods are included that cause allergy issues for him. He's allergic to fowl, kibble, and particular treats. He was prescribed probiotics and metronidazole. I'm looking forward to helping him heal. Needless to say, I'm glad he's going to be okay.

This is the WORST animal hospital I have ever been to!!…read moreFirst of all, roughly 4 1/2 years ago, I had a cat that was seen by them. They charged me over $700 for bloodwork & told me that my cat was diabetic. I got a 2nd opinion from a vet who specialized in cats. This vet took ONE LOOK at my cat & said, "Your cat has cancer." I was FLOORED! The bloodwork (that was a hell of a lot cheaper than $700!) confirmed it. Ever since then, I NEVER went back to Munster Animal for vet visits. Fast-forward to this week, I need to board my cats, & the usual places I board either stopped boarding or are booked. So, I call Muster to ask if they board & they say yes, but the vet needs to see your cats for a wellness check prior. I figured that's fine, both cats have recently seen their regular vet...they are fine. I do a walk-in & I'm already annoyed with them from the start! The girl is having an EXTREMELY hard time checking in 2 cats at the same time. They seem VERY disorganized. The vet came in like a wrecking ball--trying to scruff my cats, catastrophizing every little thing about my cats, insisting on multiple bloodwork & x-rays, giving them all kinds of shots that I had to ask, "What are you giving my cats??", jabbing his thumb in my cats' hipbone to "demonstrate" there might be something wrong...only for the x-ray to show nothing (obviously). And to add insult to injury, this "pre-board wellness check" came out to OVER ONE THOUSAND ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS!!! Due immediately! With 3% interest if paid with a card! WTF!?!? The next day, the vet called with the bloodwork, telling me that my cat has...you guessed it...DIABETES. AND that my cat is at risk of spontaneously bleeding out & MUST be seen back for treatment IMMEDIATELY! After that dramatic phone call, I immediately booked a vet appointment with my regular vet. They called Muster for the records, talked to the Munster vet, checked her out, and took additional bloodwork. Turns out my cat is fine. fat, but fine. On the day of boarding, I schlepped my cats to Munster to board for the weekend, only to (at the last second) ask me about this deadly bleed-out scenario the doctor conjured up. I explain that my vet was talking to their vet about it & I had my vet take the bloodwork because I feel more comfortable if my regular vet sees my cats about serious matters like this. They then began telling me how they can't board my cats because the doctor wanted to see the cat back due to the seriousness of the matter & he won't be back until Monday. I told them, just call my vet now & get the results & they argued with me that I "should have brought in the results myself." WOW! The male nurse (murse) started to cut me off, raise his voice, argue with me, & then storm off!! DOUBLE WOW!! I ended it by telling them (1) If this was a deal-breaker to board my cats, why didn't they call my vet for the results? (2) Why is the Munster vet adamant about a follow-up when I took my cat to her regular vet...does he not trust my vet? Or is this another CASH GRAB?!? (3) If you guys "care so much" about animals here, you'd understand my concerns regarding my LAST cat dying of cancer when your vet misdiagnosed him with DIABETES! And finally - being rude, dismissive, combative, condescending, and sarcastic to customers in a failed attempt to deflect from your own incompetence & ineptitude is not a good look for any of you or your "walk-ins welcome" hospital. I recommend the Hobart Animal Clinic as an alternative. Your pets might even live longer.

I'm leaving this review to document an incident involving veterinary technician Sarah Spadoni and…read morethe clinic's office assistant, both of whom created an unnecessarily hostile and unprofessional experience during my dog's visit. This review reflects my experience during that visit and the aftermath. I want this on record because the clinic declined to meaningfully address it, and I believe incidents like this only escalate when no one speaks up. My dog, Chop, has been under the care of this veterinarian for years, and I've spent nearly a lot on his medical. I am deeply invested in his health, which makes the experience all the more shocking. 1. Confusion About Role During the Visit During my visit, technician Sarah Spadoni spoke in a way that led me to believe she was the actual vet. She referred to "her clients," provided medical guidance, and presented herself as the authority during the conversation. Because of this, for about a week afterward I believed she was the new veterinarian at the clinic. I later understood that she is a veterinary technician, which made the interaction confusing to me. Veterinary medicine has clear professional roles for a reason, and during this interaction those boundaries were not very clear from my perspective. During the same conversation she questioned where I obtain my dog's heartworm prevention and expressed concerns about medication obtained outside their clinic. In that discussion she said she believed the medication might not be legitimate and questioned whether obtaining it outside the clinic was legal. I left feeling that if I didn't buy his treatment from them specifically, it might somehow be less effective in preventing heartworm. She also asked about my home location and said she wanted to know the exact area where I live so she could inform her "other clients" to avoid walking in that area due to potential heartworm concerns. That request made me uncomfortable, as I don't want my location shared with others. Overall, the interaction left me confused and uneasy. 2. Medical Advice Later Contradicted Ms. Spadoni provided information that was later contradicted by a veterinarian. Being wrong is one thing; providing information with total certainty is another, especially when pet owners trust staff to know their limits. 3. Improper Handling and Interrogation At one point, my dog was held by staff while my mother and I were questioned as if we were being investigated. This was not standard communication or restraint. It felt improvised and unnecessarily adversarial. 4. Accusations from the Office Assistant When I attempted to address the situation with the office assistant, it escalated immediately. She accused me of negligence and of essentially causing my dog's past heartworm infection "on purpose," despite clear medical records, imaging, and years of documented care. She also made comments that left me with the impression that maybe my dog should be handled more roughly because he was "poorly behaved," something no licensed veterinarian has ever claimed about him. This level of escalation without listening is alarming, especially given my long-term commitment to this dog's care. Why I'm Writing This This review is not meant to start a debate. It is intended to establish a public, timestamped record of what occurred. If future clients report similar behavior, they can reference this documentation. Veterinary care requires competence, clarity, and appropriate boundaries between techs, managers, and veterinarians. Those boundaries were not upheld here, in my opinion. I am updating this review because new issues have come to light, and I believe it's important to have them documented for both myself and others. Let me also preface this by saying that I had no issues with Dr. Ferrell herself, as she has always seemed kind and considerate toward Chop. My concerns are specific to the behavior of the technicians and the office assistant. The day after the incident, the office assistant called my mother, apologized for how she and Ms. Spadoni handled the situation, and asked for Chop's care to resume. While I appreciate the acknowledgment of mistakes, we declined and chose to move to a new veterinarian. Months later, after repeated attempts to get us to return were declined, the clinic included commentary about our interaction in his medical records that I believe was inaccurate and did not reflect what occurred. I was concerned it could complicate his care with other providers. Thankfully, the new vet did not rely on those notes. These actions have raised serious concerns. I have contacted the Indiana Board of Veterinary Medicine and the BBB and am prepared to escalate further if necessary. We have now found a vet who specializes in Chop's breed. My dog has had a difficult life, and the last thing I would ever do is put him in the care of people who made his care more difficult than it needed to be.

I personally have 3 snowshoes and 1 Siamese, I trust this vet over every other in the area. She isn't about the money she is about what's best for the animal.
