After a great dinner assembled by another quick service Hawaiian Style Restaurant last week, we were in the mood for more Hawaiian Grindz. We found Hula Wok on yelp. When we arrived, there were two San Ramon Police Officers having lunch inside. Because of the nature of their job, cops know where they can get decent hot food served in a short amount of time. While everyone's taste buds are different, we've had many more positive experiences following their lead than negative. We were greeted upon entering. It took us a minute to figure out what we wanted. Once the order was placed, we were given our drink cup to fill ourselves. I went outside to walk the dog while she stayed inside to wait for the order. Once our order was up, we left and went to the parking lot where we give Princess her monthly bath. Two scoops rice, one scoop mac salad plus our entrees filled the clamshells to the brim. So much so, that neither one of us could finish our orders. The rice was okay, same with the mac salad, although I may have enjoyed it more if it hadn't been packed with the hot foods. She got a seafood combo with Fried White Fish and Prawns. She chose Kalua Pig and Cabbage as her third protein. I got Chicken Katsu and Kalbi Ribs. All of our entrees were on point, hot and flavorful. She got tartar sauce for her fish and i got a sweet tonkatsu sauce for my Katsu. All in all, a good experience. We'll have to come by again to check out their Chinese food. read more

First time eating here at a table. Food is so good and the portions are a good size - even for the mini plates. Staff is friendly. Food comes out quickly. Establishment is clean. They do a lot of take out orders. When eating here, I wish they used real plates and had real utensils. It's a challenge to eat short ribs using a plastic fork and knife. The food here was so delicious from the chicken katsu, to the chicken teriyaki, to the pork everything is extremely delicious. The best part too is the variety of food the menu has too as there is more than just Hawaiian food. You can order Chinese food as well and many other items if you're not sure what you're in the mood for. The ambiance is good too with the Hawaiian and asian feel in the atmosphere and the service overall is good too. The katsu sauce though could be better as it has like a smokey bbq taste to it which isn't what katsu sauce tends to taste like. And the macaroni salad also tastes a bit like it could be missing something. But in the end the food is worth the money and trip here. read more

I ventured out craving a LocoMoco and decided to try Hula Wok BBQ. When I arrived to place my order and was told their grill was down so I opted for the regular LauLau plate. Steamed rice and mac salad was wonderful! The laulau however had moist laulau leaves but the pork tasted hard and maybe freezer burned. Didn't enjoy the pork at all. This is our go-to spot for Hawaiian food. Their bbq is always well- marinated and grilled properly. Today we had two mixed plates: one bbq and the other was seafood and katsu. We also ordered the spicy salt and pepper chicken as an appetizer. Food came out pretty quickly. The mixed plates were good as usual. I'm back at it again! This place is in one of our usual take out rotation list. We order from here every other week. The family enjoys it! We usually order an order of bbq beef and another order of chicken katsu and that is more than enough for our family of four, 2 adults and 2 kids. Now the price has increased quite a bit since Covid but they do give you a good amount of food but man $17 for a Togo regular plate of chicken katsu with rice and Mac salad is the same cost if I enjoy a meal sitting down and receiving service. This place used to be busy during lunch and I only saw 1 table. No wonder this place is dead now! On top of that, they start charging 25 cents if you request the macaroni salad on the side! The cold macaroni salad supposed to be separate anyway. Do you eat the cold salad together with hot rice and meat?? Greedy! Why don't you charge plastic forks and knives too?? Just doesn't make sense at all. I paid $25 for half Kungpao chicken and half hamburger patty which I had to throw away all the chicken (not edible). Waste of money and I won't be back. My First time visiting this place. Nice size portion of Lemon Chicken and steam rice, $18.60.......Lemon chicken more syrupy sweet than tart or lemony, rate a 4 out of 10. Service was polite. Cleanliness needs improvement ( very dirty windows with dead flies or bugs on the window sill), tables dirty ( my arm sticky from table while waiting for my food ). Floors were clean, free from food or debris. The Ambiance needs a makeover for sure. Definitely clean the windows or replace them, seeing dirty windows and dead bugs on the window sill makes me concerned about cleanliness and sanitation in the kitchen. I understand that this is not a 5 star restaurant and it is just an operational restaurant, however the bare minimal the restaurant could do is keep their windows pristine clean for their dine in customers. I also notice that they have a nice flow of customers coming in and picking up orders. No other dine in customers. It was a good standard fast service loco moco. The patty has like a jimmy dean texture, the mac salad was okay to me, and the gravy was good but needed more gravy. Its ambience remind me of a San Jose established but in San Ramon. Service is fast and friendly. Prices are decent for what you pay for. You can definitely save half for lunch/dinner. read more

Updated review after 4 years: Hula Wok BBQ is probably my number one takeout place and I consider it an essential business. It survived through the height of the pandemic and i still come here after becoming a parent. Yes even our 2-yo son loves the food here, and he's getting to be a picky eater! The food is plentiful, inexpensive, and really tasty. I order from both the Hawaiian and Chinese menus. The chefs know their stuff, with decades of restaurant experience in Hong Kong. Our favorite dishes are: 1. Chicken Katsu - Among the best in the Bay Area IMHO. Crispy outside, juicy inside and the one criticism is not enough sauce, LOL. Get a party tray of this and you'll be the superstar of the party! 2. Tomato Beef and Rice - Chinese comfort food that reminds me of the food I had growing up. 3. BBQ Saimin - My wife's favorite and also my toddler's too. 4. Hawaiian Chicken Plate - Also toddler friendly, especially the mac salad. Chicken is often soft and bursting with Teriyaki flavor. 5. Mapo Tofu - We like it with beef and its great how balanced the sauce and tofu are with the rice. Pleasant spiciness. 6 Musubi Trio - Great snack that is easy to pack and enjoy on the go. This restaurant is our go-to for large party platters when we don't feel like cooking. As for regular meals for us, the family usually chooses loco mocos, spam musubis and chicken katsu dishes. The customer service is always really amazing when we visit. They are also very smart with the gumball toy machines that they have in the front of the store because my son must have one every visit but he doesn't get one until his food is finished so that it's a win-win sit for all of us. Downside for the spam musubi is that one order literally comes with just one piece of spam on top of a block of rice wrapped with seaweed whereas anywhere in Hawaii that you'll go especially places like Eleanor barbecue. I ordered way too much food, their family meal for 10 would have been more than enough, but we had 5 kids and a non meat eater. I got the bbq chicken, bbq beef and Katsu chicken with a side of white rice and mac salad. I ordered Spam musubi, a side of short ribs and a side of shrimp. The shrimp was actually a meal and came with rice and more Mac salad. Highly recommend the bbq chicken and steak, both had really good marinades and flavor. The Katsu was a hit amongst the kids. The dipping sauce that came with it left us all wanting more. My mom forgot to pack it with the leftovers, I was so bummed. Selected the Musubi Trio and saw the Loco Moco... I love Loco Moco!!! Sold Musubis and Loco Moco it is. So completed the order on line for pick up at 6:00 pm. Took me 8 minutes to walk to Hula from the hotel got there right at 6 and my order was sitting there waiting. Walked back to the hotel and everything was still nice and warm. I started with the spam musubi... loved it and decided to move onto the Loco Moco. It was a large order for the price and it came with an extra scoop of rice and macaroni salad. I was disappointed that there was very little sauce on the patties and rice. What was there was good but the lack of sauce left the patties dry and lacking flavor and a lot of white rice. Moving back to the remaining 2 musubis and both were very tasty. I think my favorite of the 3 was the BBQ chicken musubi. Will be ordering these again.
