Apparently most of the people who have written reviews here have never been to most Mongolian grills which have much the same setup, frozen meat, and cooking on a standard grill where the other customer's meals are cooked as well. HuHot is very clean, maintains good ingredients (and a lot more food options than most Mongolian style grills), and great service. Don't low-rate a type of cuisine because you don't understand or like it's style... the food here is solid if you like Mongolian BBQ. I give it 4-stars instead of 5 because I've had a couple of places which were better... but they do a pretty damn good job and we'll definitely be back. read more

First, let me say that I love Asian food. I especially love this variety of restaurant, where you choose your toppings and watch it cooked up before your eyes. The best example of this is Stir Crazy in St. Louis. That being said, HuHot was vile. Let me count the ways: 1. The meat. Oh, the meat! Your culinary journey begins at the foothills of the buffet line where you're greeted with a tantalized assortment of frozen meat flakes. You can choose between chicken flakes, beef flakes, pork mini-flakes, fish flakes, crab cubes, or sausage. Throw a few flakes of raw meat in your bowl and then start piling fresh vegetables directly on top. Mmm mmm. What an efficient way to combine ingredients! Might I suggest you try this at home as well. 2. After you've filled your E. Coli bowl to the breaking point, head on over to the circle coral to watch in amazement as the skilled cooks slop your bacteria-laden meal onto a filthy cooking surface along with all the other meals of the people in front of you. Don't like meat? Too bad, my friend. You're now forced to watch in helpless desperation as the cooks use the same grease-caked spatula to: - squeeze blood from the beef flakes - chop up the pork tendrils - molest the seafood And then they come back to your entree and spread the love! Who doesn't like a little bit of everything in their meal?! It's a virtual explosion of flavors! Beef, chicken, crab, catfish... all in my meat-less meal. Hooray! I have been to this restaurant numerous times. They have made some nice cosmetic changes that I can see help the social distancing and covid requirements. I am choosing to write this review because this could be an outstanding restaurant but it's hard to get over the lack of masks worn by the grill cooks and the lackluster attitude of the staff. Cooks & Grill are out on display for all to see. No masks. No wiping down of surfaces in timely manner. Cook-Unkempt clothing, hair, and horribly dirty aprons. Did I mention no masks? No freaking masks! Diners are required and the cook isn't. The cook would cough, sigh, touch his clothing and face all while limping around on an injured foot and clearly shouldn't be on the line let alone cooking my food. Sooooo much food, grease and water on the floor. Mess everywhere! Sink full of mess, dirty aprons on floor. Completely out of control. THEN on top of that, they kill the food. Cooked to death and then cooked another round to insure all the sauce and moisture is completely gone. Clearly no quality control. You get total control over your meal and you get to watch the guys on the grill cook it, but their "warning! very hot" sauce is Tobasco, at best. The servers are incompetent lackies that probably got hired because they knew someone (besides, how smart do you have to be to babysit a self-serving table). I did like that I could pig out, but I did not like having to stand in line behind idiots enamored with the round flat grill. I felt like a tiger on a chain with a steak being waved in my face. We ordered crab rangoon to go with our meal as an appetizer, but it arrived sometime after the bill. They kept saying that the kitchen needed a particular dish washed, but I think the kitchen is a just a large closet with a microwave to nuke out bacteria on seafood items. The bar of half frozen / half fresh foods always looks questionable. Basically, you throw your meat (if you can call it that) and veggies in a bowl, top with some sauce from the disgustingly sticky, dripping sauce bar, then give your bowl to the cook while they try to manage cooking anywhere from 8-12 meals at once. People's stir-fry sauces are running into each other. The biggest thing you can do for yourself is close your eyes and NOT look at the grill they cook your food on. DISGUSTING. I'm not sure how people keep coming back to this place. Imagine the nastiest, most unsanitary kitchen you've ever seen. There's old food and grease piled high on the grill and floor, but somehow it's justified because they cook it in front of you. Beats me how they can pass a health inspection. On any given day you will stand in line for them to cook your food for 30 minutes. The food is mediocre. Once it cools off it's pretty well inedible. The wait staff is hit or miss. Our most recent waitress never even brought us the rice we ordered. It took her a half hour to bring us our check after we asked for it. I was highly impressed, but perhaps I'm easy to please. Rather, it seems some of the reviewers here are going looking for something to complain about. Granted, individuals who sign up for food review sites probably aren't usually looking to sing the praises of a particular restaurant. Consider me an exception--I actually created an account in order to favorably rate this place. Yes, I was that impressed. My wife and I dined at HuHot last night, and loved it. We do eat out fairly often, and never "fast food." We also do eat hibachi semi-regularly, even across the parking lot at Nakato, and love it. HuHot is not hibachi; it's Mongolian. The hallmark of a Mongolian restaurant is its community-style grill. Being upset / disappointed at the fact that this place is, well, a Mongolian place, is like being upset that there's no table-side service at McDonald's. We were seated promptly on a weeknight (how can anyone expect super-fast service at one of the newest restaurants in town, in one of Springfield's busiest locations, on the busiest night to dine out!?), and service was exceptional. We weren't dressed to impress, nor are we those self-important, critical types you see all too often in new restaurants. I simply asked the waiter, Caleb, if their hot and sour soup was vegetarian. Not only did he answer my question (it wasn't), but he asked if we were both vegetarian, then proceeded to bring us nutritional menus detailing the allergens in each dish and sauce (who knew so many sauces contained mollusks or anchovies?), then apparently told the cooks we were coming. Once we handed over our overflowing bowls for cooking, they were dumped on a newly cleaned section of the grill (scraped, sanitized, re-scraped, and wiped down), with new spatulas, new plates, and barriers to keep juices from flowing into and out of our separate dishes. We never asked for such treatment, but we received it. Twice. The waiter was quick to ask if everything was sufficiently prepared, and visited the table often to check on us. Salad and soup were delivered promptly when we sat down with our first plates. The buffet did indeed contain frozen meats. I'm no meat expert, but I can't say (if I ate the stuff), I'd want to see raw chicken, steak, cod, salmon, shrimp, octopus, calamari, or pork sitting out, growing more gelatinous with time? How could it be anything but frozen, and still look appetizing? Concerning selection: I didn't mention above the pork sausage and Krab that were also available. In addition to three noodle options (Pad Thai noodle, soba, and Chinese noodles), there were as many vegetable options as the restaurant had room for. Anyone who didn't see variety must have been looking for lychee and blowfish. Vegetables included asparagus, bamboo shoots, potatoes, onions, broccoli, mushrooms, tofu, black beans, bean sprouts, zucchini, pineapple, bell peppers, jalapenos, celery, carrots, and more that I can't recall. Sauces are plentiful and interesting, and finishing touches include sesame seeds, peanuts, french-fried onions, wasabi paste, coconut, and sunflower kernels. Do try some of the sweet chili sauce at each table. I'd have a hard time substantiating others' complaints, and tend to believe that grumpy people find faults where they aren't. In any case, we went expecting decent food at a decent price, and were pleasantly surprised. Two dined, with alcoholic beverages, for $32, and we left in time to catch a movie, about 40 minutes after we arrived. I highly recommend it--just don't be ridiculous with your expectations. On a Friday night at 6:00, expect to wait. If you'd prefer faster service and cheaper food, Taco Bell is open late. read more

Interesting concept, but not one that I enjoy in practicality. Here's why: First of all, I didn't end up enjoying the combination of vegetables, noodles, meat, and sauce that I had put together on my plate. The server insisted that I not eat it and instead go back and try again, which appears to be the norm....such a enormous waste of food. For the second plate, I followed one of their suggested recipes, and the food was better, but far from impressive. I think that when I go out to eat, I prefer to just have a professional prepare my food. Second, it was difficult to have a conversation and enjoy the company of the people I was with, because so much of my time was spent either waiting in line for my food to be cooked, or eating alone while they were in line waiting for their second plate to be cooked. This place is an atrocity in innumerable ways. First of all the food is not good. Maybe it's because you are largely left to your own devices as you assemble your plate or maybe it's because the ingredients are essentially 60% plastic by volume (they have krab with a k as one of their "meat" options). In any case, taste wise Hu Hot is a disaster. Secondly, the buffet line is a mess. Food is strewn everywhere. Raw chicken is near raw beef, clumps of meat have fallen in the sauces, and the vegetable table appears to have been caught in a whirlwind. It looks like there was a zombie apocalypse and some zombies walked into Hu Hot and said "nope we aren't that hungry" scattered some food and left. Don't go to Hu Hot. If you want some hibachi go to 4 seasons a little further down on battlefield. If you want pasta, head to avanzare. This was my friend, Drew's old stomping ground when he lived in Springfield, MO. Huhot Mongolian Grill is a bright, airy, and big restaurant outside of the Battlefield Mall. We were immediately greeted by the hostess and Kayla was our server. Kayla insisted that the tea was sweet. I'm from the south and tried ordering sweet tea in St. Louis which was unsuccessful. Drew kept calling this place a buffet. When I think of a buffet, I imagine already cooked food. Not the case here. The concept is that you choose from raw meats, fresh vegetables, noodles and sauce to be stirred fried on the grill. I was a little uncomfortable with at this concept but really started to enjoy this process. It was lunch time and fairly crowded. We waited in line for the chefs chefs to cook our food creativity. So, we smelled everyone else food masterpieces. Whenever the patrons tips the chef, they sound the gong. The chefs sout "Huhot!!!!" Fun. Different. After the chefs do their magic, we returned to our table where there was a glass of sweet tea and a bowl of rice waiting. The sweet tea did not disappoint. Neither did my dish. It was good very good. So good that Drew and I went for seconds. At the table there are some stir fry combinations if you don't know what to make. Kayla was an excellent server and we look forward to returning. I'm not a huge fan of mongolian grills, but this is a pretty good mall restaurant and a good opportunity to eat massive amounts of fried noodles. The crab puffs/crab rangoon are some of my favorite in the springfield area. I must say, if you're grossed out by the use of shared utensils making your food, etc., imagine what happens in the back of the house in any other restaurant! This is really a very weak complaint and everyone making it has clearly never worked in food service. These "atrocities" take place behind closed doors in literally every restaurant you have ever been to. Grease is a drippy substance, and the practice of using, like, disposable spatulas or spatulas that are washed more than necessary just to look pretty is hideously unsustainable. If what's going on here hasn't killed you elsewhere, it won't kill you here just because you can see it happening. If it bugs you, eat at home. read more

Apparently, in Missouri and on this side of the Mississippi, this is a chain, so I'm breaking my rule about Yelping on chains. But it's new to me and worth discussing. Also note that a lot of my review will be comparing this place to BD's Mongolian BBQ, the equivalent in Chicago/Ohio, which in the end, won't work ing HuHot's favor. Overall, it's good: I ate a lot of food that I really liked. Stir fry with spicy sauces is hard to mess up, as I like meat and I like spice, and this place has plenty of that. You can also eat until you're sick--I went for a long walk after and still felt full--so value is there for sure as well. The big downer of this place is that the meat selections are frozen solid when you go up there, and there aren't a lot of them. First comparison to Mongolian BBQ: HuHot has about half the meat selections, and we went on Saturday, when the bar is supposedly expanded (and priced accordingly). There's beef (not steak), chicken, and pork, three kinds of sausage (which I'd never get), and imitation crab. No squid, no turkey, and most of all, no shrimp. That's costing them a star right there. And the fact that this stuff was all frozen solid was a bit weird to me; I realize that the proteins at Mongolian BBQ are probably frozen at one point, too, but still, it's odd to tong up frozen meat into a dish, be it for safety or their convenience. The vegetables and the sauces are fine, and then the cooking process is the standard Mongolian grill process, energetic cooks tossing food and utensils around, a pretty fun and intense show. What I saw here that I haven't seen before is the fried eggs, how the cooks toss a raw egg in the air, have it break on their spatula, and somehow in one motion get the raw egg on the grill and shell in the garbage pit in the middle. It's cool, worth grabbing an egg to see. If you haven't been to a Mongolian grill before, it's a great experience, lots of fun, and the food is pretty good, hard to mess up. I can only eat at one once year or so, but next year, if I get a craving, I'd definitely go back to HuHot. read more

It's a fun place to go to a few times a year for something different. Servers have all been great, the place is very clean (well maybe not so much in the cooking area). Gone about 4-5 times now and if it wasn't for the options to change up the flavors with different spices and sauces it would be just the same thing over and over again. We have been going to this place off and on for years. Today may be the last time we go. The food is raw so it has to be cooked and you add your own sauce to your raw meat and veggies. The grill cooks are either really chatty or stand offish. Most aren't used to interacting with other people and I can always tell when it's forced! They dump out your bowl and all the sauce is cooked off and then you are left with dry noodles. Our server neglected to tell us drinks are no longer included it the price of the buffet until after she brought us our drinks. All in all I think I will stick with Ichiban or Asian King for my stir fry it's a lot cheaper. read more

The food was fantastic. You really learn bowl to bowl on your taste and what you prefer. Although I will say the one recent time I've been, the service was absolutely terrible. The older man who was a bit heavier set was not attentive whatsoever. I think I saw him 2-3 times at our table. I had to look for him to ask him for a refill and he was just chatting with an employee. Every time I looked for him he was either talking to a coworker or making drinks for who knows who, it wasn't for us. It also took him 20 minutes to get us a check as he was getting drinks for other tables as we were trying to leave. Hopefully this is fixed by the time I come back, if I come back. read more

A clever idea, but have to agree with some other reviewers that the cooking area felt a little sketchy. Gave it three stars because it is at least trying for something more than a regular mall chain restaurant, and in some regards, achieves it. Additionally, the staff was very good. The area where you choose your ingredients and sauces looked clean enough, the vegetables and noodles seemed fresh and were plentiful. The frozen meat tasted okay when cooked, so try to overlook it in its frozen state. Hot and spicy sauce was not especially such, but I'm used to spicy food, so that may just be me. The option to create your own meal and then watch it cooked would probably be a hit with kids. Don't know that I'd come back, but, without a lot of other dining options, I'd say this is probably worthwhile to try. read more

Staff are really nice! The reason why I'm putting 3 stars is because the food tastes like metal. Whatever you do DONT get eggs in your dish. There were egg shells in my food after my bowl was made next to my mother's (she got egg). My mother said "the egg totally killed it [the dish] and now I know not to get egg again." The staff are wonderful I just hope that grill masters could get better. I don't know if they were just starting or are new but I hope they can improve and make the dishes better! read more

A simplified, dumbed down version of other, more authentic hibachi grills. I suppose that's fine for some people, as this is "cashew chicken" country, after all. However, this seems expensive for what you get. They took one small feature of numerous other Asian restaurants and made it the focus of their entire cuisine. The gimmick here is that the patron gets to clumsily construct his/her plate before it goes to the chef where he cooks it to almost-completion (I noticed pieces of meat on my plate were quite chewy). Aaaaand, that's it! Somehow this is supposed to be a more deluxe version of what I can get down the street for a few dollars less. Hey, I kinda liked this place. It was pretty fun, the food tasted pretty good (the grill area is...well, a round hibachi grill where food is cooked in a clock-like motion. The operations planning for this place is something to behold), and our wait staff was rather nice. If you're looking for awesome asian grill food, travel across the parking lot and plunk down $10 more for a meal at Nakato. But if you're in the mood for a fun change-of-pace restaurant where you get to hand-pick your ingredients and sauces, go for HuHot. My only complaints is that there aren't enough ingredients on the bar; the meats are frozen, which is probably a good idea for sanitation and logistical purposes, but not the greatest idea for a 'fancy' buffet. The vegetables are there, mostly fresh, but there just doesn't seem to be that many. Maybe it's just me. My other complaint is the floor layout; doesn't seem to make sense to me the way things are broken up in the restaurant. The wait time for us on a Saturday night was 20 minutes. The food was rather tasty, and the experience was fun. Everybody else I saw in the restaurant seemed to be enjoying their dinner quite well. I've been to many Mongolian Grills and this one was amazing! The food was great, plenty of meat, vegetables, and sauce options. Even my two picky kids found something to eat. The prices are fair $12.99 for adults, kids 12 and under pay $2.99 or less depending on their age. That's a great deal if you want a nice filling dinner without a huge bill. The restaurant was clean, the staff was friendly, and the cooks were very entertaining! Food was amazing but the service was not the best. Waited for over 10 minutes for our waiter/waitress for drinks. When we approached the hostess about not receiving our drinks, she proceeded to be verbally aggressive and hateful. We did let the manager know and he corrected the issue and made us feel the situation was addressed. Morgan (our waitress) was excellent and the cooks were very efficient and entertaining. Wow what's up with huhot? There is zero energy at the grill. Barely any people on a Saturday evening. And the grill guys are just bitching to eachother as they cook and burning half of it. Never got my rice. My pineapple drink was a margarita with a brown lime and a sprig of mint. And the waitress never returned and no one else would help. Oh and let's not forget that in a half empty restaurant and zero people in the bar area they tried to make me sit by the bathroom even when I said no thank you I do not want to sit by a bathroom.
