I called in before I came because I really wanted to go to a shop where I could get advice on what size board I should get based on my height, my size and also the level of rider I am, and they were extremely helpful on the phone. I showed up and I got exactly what they said they would give me which is a full on in depth lesson on what size board is best for me what shape is best for me they were super informative and really, really helpful. As far as people saying that this place is overpriced. I think that's not true at all. They have a ton of boards and gear that is a year old and heavily discounted. Everyone I worked with was super friendly and they found me stuff that is not only going to improve my snowboarding, but make my trips a lot easier, and more fun because I finally have the right gear that fits me correctly. 1000 out of 10 this was one of the best shops I've ever been to! Definitely come here for your snowboard/ski needs !! I bought a new snowboard, new bindings, and new boots, and I left them there while I went and spent Christmas with my family while they waxed both my boards and mounted my new bindings on my new board for free! I would like to recommend this shop to anyone in the area of Chico or surrounding towns/cities. I have had many great encounters with each and every one of the employees at Hughes, they have helped me choose and select the appropriate gear to meet my snowboarding needs. Very well informed and tech savy employees that they have. I have also brought in my snowboards to get serviced last minute and have been able to get it complete in a timely manner, mind you I have brought it in last minute without an expectation to have it done by the end of the day! Went and rented ski package. They fit my son and I a couple days before our trip so that we could pick them up on the way to the slopes. Got to the slopes and they had fit the skis to the wrong size boots. Mine were supposed to be 10 1/2 , my son's 8 1/2. Went to put them on at the slopes and they didn't fit at all. Gave me an 8 1/2, my son 6 1/2. So, had to rent at the slopes. Lost nearly half of our day pass time dealing with getting correct fitted boots at the slopes rental shop. Had to take our gear from Hugh's back to my truck then a pretty good clip back to the slopes before we could ski. Lost time and money. Hugh's did refund the rental , but by that time , I was and am still upset that the EXPERT fitters had screwed up that badly. I suggest that if you use them try your boots on again before you leave the store. read more

Hughes Ski Hut is a great little shop, far from the mountains. They have fair prices and great customer service. Some reviewers compared pricing for a binding mount to REI. Well, a drive to Sac will significantly add to the price in fuel consumed. Tahoe and city shops benefit from a huge amount of traffic. My friends and I came to rent snowshoes for the day. The process was so easy and the workers were incredibly pleasant. It costed $20 to rent snowshoes for the day and usually they let you rent for 2 day - you can pick up the day before and then return in two days. But, because we were renting and using the same day, we had until 2 days after to return it. Long story short, you pay to rent for two days which is absolutely amazing and so considerate. Honestly disappointed in Hughes Ski Hut. You expect them to know their stuff. My brothers 6ft tall and wanted ski rentals, they wanted to give him 152s (I heard 140s). Wayyyy too short. Yes a short ski can be easier to handle but not that short! You'll feel like you are gonna face plant. They gave him 160s I'm 4 inches shorter and that's what I ski on... okay, he should probably have a 170 + whatever he'll live. Goes to try on boots, he says they are too tight. Dude says we don't size up. Says can cause blisters, yes that's true, but you need to be able to feel your feet. My brother told me later he couldn't get the boot on by himself, the guy sizing him had to help him wrestle his foot in. My brother deciding to "trust the experts" says alright fine. We go, find out he can't get the second boot on and stand without pain. He has to get a whole new set of rentals. They gave him a much longer ski which he did well on. Never used the gear from Hughes. We take the gear back a day early, skis never touch the snows, boots never touched the skis. Explained the issue, they didn't even say I'm sorry or ask if they could help make it right. Just you said the gear was okay, like come on, off of your advice. Rentals are expensive! Would appreciated just a little customer service instead of apathy. The two dudes working a Friday and Saturday night could care less. read more

What a welcoming place! I recently had my boots and skis waxed here and all the employees were so knowledgeable and kind. I would recommend this place to everyone, no matter their ability level. I really wish I could give this place 100 stars! Scott and his family are amazing people. I worked for Hughes three years ago, helping them out with ski swaps and in the shop a bit. Scott goes the extra mile in taking care of his employees. He is insanely generous and really cares about the people he is around. In the Fall he sets up once a week sessions/demos with companies that sell the brands he carries so that his staff is knowledgable about what they are selling. I bought my first Rossi board, K2 boots and bindings from Hughes 22 years ago when I got into snowboarding and I continue to purchase items from their shop. Not to mention Scott has been helpful in supporting my sisters childhood friend Raquel who was wakeboarding professionally for a time and featured in Fuel TV. Hughes Ski Hut did not hesitate one bit to donate a DC snowboard for a rail jam fundraiser I put together in 2011 for Coppervale, which is run by Lassen Community College near Susanville. Hughes was the only shop in Chico that made a board donation and it was instrumental when we raised money to keep Coppervale going. Scott and Hughes Ski Hut rules! Living in Colorado when going to school has made me realize what an awful ski shop Hughes is. Everything is over priced and their goal is not to help but to sell. I walked in with a cracked snowboard knowing it can easily be fixed and they said they couldn't fix it but if you go to Sports LTD they said 15 bucks they could fix the simple crack on the top layer of my board to protect the core. Being the only true ski shop in Chico it is unfortunate that they are able to get away with this. I would suggest that if you want to buy gear or need tuning. For in person buying I would suggest sports LTD in Chico or head up to Tahoe and buy up there. If you really want to save some money buy online as long as you understand what you're buying and have the knowledge. My parents use to go here in the 80s and even they say the service has gone down hill and not someplace to go unless it is the last resort. I don't like writing a negative review but I don't like the idea of others being new to snowboarding and skiing and their first experience being ripped off. It took over ten min for them to notice me. They have good ski knowledge but have no clue about snowboards. The guy tried selling me a board way to big and never asked what kind of riding I was doing. Try to stay away if you ride a board. read more

Helpful and friendly customer service, they still remember and ask how my gear is holding up etc. They strive to make sure you're comfortable with what you're buying. Went to Hughes recently and was turned down for a binding adjustment due to the age of my bindings. I didn't mind that he advised me that ski equipment had improved a lot and I should give rentals a try, but he also told me that I would be laughed at in Tahoe because my skis were so old.
