    Unassuming, clean little hometown restaurant.

We had planned to eat at a BBQ establishment in Corsicana. While we're driving around, my wife checked the internet and found our chosen destination was permanently closed! I can now say, I am glad. We liked the Barbecue, but this place was just SO MUCH BETTER! The service was attentive and prompt. We both opted for the lunch special, for $8.75. We had Chicken Fried Steak. I can honestly say I never ever, ANYWHERE, had a better one!the meat was tender and cooked and breaded to perfection. I opted for mashed potatoes, a tossed salad and turnip greens with mine. My wife had sweet potato, tossed salad and corn with hers. The sides were all excellent. The meals came with tea (or coffee) cornbread, rolls, and cobbler for desert! Everything was well prepared and tasty. Most of all, everything was hot! (Cold restaurant food is a pet peeve) The restaurant was impeccably clean. I even got into a pleasant exchange of words with a gentleman at a neighboring table. On leaving, we had a brief conversation with the entire dining room staff - including the owner, who opened the restaurant 28 years ago. An outstanding bit of needed Americana. I will happily return anytime I'm in the area. I highly recommend this place.

cooking. Special, CFS, mashed taters, green beans, salad, bread and dessert and tea for 6.75.

Foods okay, service sucks. They are never open. Always hot on the inside. Not work time or money.

There's a very fine line between good and bad greasy spoon. This is just bad. Dirty, dusty, depressing.

We came in about 5:45 on Tuesday before New Years, and the place was basically bare. I was concerned. Went immediately to use the restroom, which was nostalgically decorated and clean as a whistle. The waitress was at the table taking to my husband when I got done, and my tea was already there, waiting for me, when I arrived. Now...the food: I got the chicken fried steak and hubby got fried catfish. Both were so clean and fresh I thought they'd been air fried! By the time the food arrived, dinner time must've hit, because as I write this from my table, the place is absolutely packed full of patrons. I didn't take a photo of my dinner, because I was busy enjoying it. However, I was able to get a quick snapshot of the husband's fish before he downed the last few bites. Seriously, this was the best southern comfort meal we've had in quite some time. We'll DEFINITELY make this a stop when we are passing through Hillsboro in the future! Seriously. Try them. You can thank me later, and ya might even run into Bubba while you're here!

I had the carbonara, and honestly, it was almost too pretty to eat. The service was a little slow, but it actually gave us time to soak in the atmosphere and admire how beautiful the restaurant is inside. The vibe? Absolutely check. The cocktails were not our favorite, but that definitely won't stop us from coming back to try other drinks on the menu. What makes this place even more special is that it's a true mom-and-pop restaurant sourcing food locally. You really can't beat that. Supporting local while getting an amazing meal is always a win.

Pink and honest in the middle, warm and willing, bread holding it all together like a good road holding a long drive. Nothing flashy, nothing trying too hard just flavor that knew where it came from and didn't apologize. The arugula salad came sharp and clean, green with intent, that bitter edge that wakes you up a little and reminds you you're still alive. It wasn't there to impress you. It was there to balance things out, like a deep breath between sentences. I drank Earl Grey tea, steam rising slow, bergamot drifting up like memory, like train smoke somewhere far off. It felt right. The kind of tea you drink when you're not rushing anywhere, when the world can spin without you for a moment and that's okay. Fern in the Wild isn't trying to reinvent eating. It's doing something better. It's paying attention. To ingredients. To pace. To the quiet pleasure of a meal done right. I left feeling fed in more ways than one--like I'd stopped long enough to hear myself think. That's rare. That's worth something. I'll be back.

The server was very welcoming and friendly. It was obvious that one man sitting nearby was a regular, since she called him by name, That seemed like a good sign! My husband ordered chicken strips, fries and green beans. I ordered the liver and onions (which I can seldom find), their "Czech fries," (with a menu description of special seasoning), and green beans. The food arrived fairly promptly, and immediately I was perplexed. The chicken tenders looked like pre-formed frozen patties, very flat. The green beans were loaded with onions, which my husband hates, and he never would have ordered if he'd known that. He immediately slid his bowl of beans over to me. My Czech "fries" were definitely not fries. They were essentially scalloped potatoes with sliced onions. They tasted fine, but whatever special seasoning they used was hard to taste. I do have to say that the liver was delicious, perfectly cooked, and the cream gravy I requested was the perfect addition. My husband said his chicken strips tasted ok, but they were certainly not the type of strips we're used to from local restaurants. My overall opinion is that this is a place that's been there a long time, locals are used to eating there and comfortable with being recognized, and don't care that the interior just looks tired and dated. It wasn't a bad experience, but we wouldn't make another 88-mile trip back to West just to eat there.
