On New Year's Day, we were in the mood for kolaches from the Czech stop but wanted lunch first, so decided to try this place for the first time. The server was very welcoming and friendly. It was obvious that one man sitting nearby was a regular, since she called him by name, That seemed like a good sign! My husband ordered chicken strips, fries and green beans. I ordered the liver and onions (which I can seldom find), their "Czech fries," (with a menu description of special seasoning), and green beans. The food arrived fairly promptly, and immediately I was perplexed. The chicken tenders looked like pre-formed frozen patties, very flat. The green beans were loaded with onions, which my husband hates, and he never would have ordered if he'd known that. He immediately slid his bowl of beans over to me. My Czech "fries" were definitely not fries. They were essentially scalloped potatoes with sliced onions. They tasted fine, but whatever special seasoning they used was hard to taste. I do have to say that the liver was delicious, perfectly cooked, and the cream gravy I requested was the perfect addition. My husband said his chicken strips tasted ok, but they were certainly not the type of strips we're used to from local restaurants. My overall opinion is that this is a place that's been there a long time, locals are used to eating there and comfortable with being recognized, and don't care that the interior just looks tired and dated. It wasn't a bad experience, but we wouldn't make another 88-mile trip back to West just to eat there. read more

On way back home to Caddo Mills from Waco and stopped on Main at Czech America. Best decision today. First you should know the AC is working 1000%. Specials today were roast beef or steak fingers with baked beans, mashed potatoes and a salad. All was the best I've had. 2 desserts were homemade Big Red Ice cream and Apple Cobbler al a mode.Forgot those pictures. Not a big place BUT worth the wait. Great waitress and honest! We went in and tried their hamburgers. They look delicious at the other table, so we ordered cheeseburgers and what we received were burnt patties that we could not even eat. I had to use a knife to cut it. We didn't say anything to the waitress. She was very happy and uplifting, so we just knew there's no way we're going back. Great Czech food. The many of the pictures already shown here convinced me to go with the Combo plate. (Cabbage Roll, Sausage, Czech Potatoes, Sauerkraut, and salad were all perfect). If you feel like a good sample of good Czech food, this plate seems like the perfect choice. I had to ask where the sausage came from. This didn't seem like some cheap grocery store brand. It turns out that H‑E‑B might carry the brand. However, Picha's does have a brochure of the meat company that makes the sausage. Great, authentic Czech food with daily specials. The chicken fried steak and liver and onions are five-star. Today I ordered the sausage and kraut special, it came with Czech potatoes. Also ordered the open-faced beef sandwich with gravy, came with a side salad. They were out of Czech beer because delivery is one month behind. Homemade bread is brought to table with the food. Service is good and food comes right out after ordering. There is a lunch rush of local farmers and ranchers. Whenever I'm in West, I make it a point to hit this famous, long standing Czech restaurant icon. read more

This place is an absolute find in West. It has lot of classic Czech foods with other delicious country style foods as well. The sweet kraut was my favorite part. The roast beef was tender and deliciously seasoned. The green beans were really fresh and nicely seasoned. The atmosphere is honey and welcoming. We loved the specials on the walls so you can see the deals everywhere you go. Also, the tables were adequately spaced to let you feel like you have space to move around. The staff was also great. The reuben sandwich is pretty good with lots of meat and saukraurt. The roast pork not so good, too small slices of pork, spoonful of potatoes and a good amount of kraut. The pork had a sickly sweet taste. Ice tea is very bland, no flavor. They have an upcharge for using a credit card. Prices are high for what you get. The service is not the best. The waitress forgot my pie and never checked on us after bringing our food. Left the check with food drop off. The place is very old so the bathrooms smell pretty bad but they are functional. read more

I drove around to look for something to have a quick bite and a beer before I hit the road and I found this place as I drove around the town. The front of this restaurant look cool so I thought I give it a shot. The building has been around for over 100 years they say. I ordered a plate of potatoes covered with seasoning and a bit of grilled onions. They were delicious and the Czech "pivo" beer is great too. Ice cream is great too. Was excited to try this place since my grandpa is part Czech. I kind of felt like if you weren't a regular or local your business didn't matter. I think we saw three tables get food before we did when we were there before them. Never asked if we needed or wanted refills on drinks. Food was bluh....husband said the CFS sandwich was bland. Grandpa tried the burger and was not impressed. Tenders/strips that claim to be hand dipped and fried!!?? This must mean they hand dipped their hand in a frozen food bag and fried them. Sausage and kraut ( i got double Czech fries) which was okay but the sausage was nothing special. Season on "fries" were unevenly distributed on them. Making some overly seasoned and salty. Temperature of it for it to be such a small place was barely warm. Even heard a cook specifically ask about "sausage in the microwave"....really??? Was hoping this would be a cute charming home cooked feel good place but staff seemed so concerned with cleaning up tables to get out in a timely fashion. Road trip to West, Texas for amazing kolaches! Pulled up around noon and wanted to go try some authentic Czech food so ended up at this establishment and boy, was it worth it. I ordered the chalkboard lunch special of roast beef, mashed potatoes and green beans. I could not say that I tried Czech until I tried their homemade cabbage roll so ordered one on the side. Oh wow! This is comfort, comfort, food and a must try. The roast beef meal was nothing short of Mom's Sunday meal and the cabbage roll was perfection. They have mile high merengue pies for dessert which I will try next time but for now, I'm so full, there's just no room! read more

so glad we found this hole in the wall! it is truly quaint! it's apparently even on the texas bucket list which we saw a photo of. the staff were super friendly and the food was on point. we tried the combo plate which included a cabbage role and sausage with sauerkraut and their potatoes. my food wasn't super hot but that could have been because i wasn't able to eat it right away. we also got the pierogies appetizer- never had those before but they were great and the sauce was the perfect pairing. the kids meal was also a great deal- the kids loved the sausage and demolished that and wanted more. It's such a gem! definitely recommend checking them out if you're driving through or live nearby! also, i would like to point out one of the few 1 star reviews was of a customer upset that during covid they weren't wearing masks- thus he left a review with hate speech. anyways, i think that's even more of a reason to support this local place! read more

Would it be possible to eat only at hole in the wall places? Well, we could try, and our lives would be better for it! I love finding these places that have been around forever. The food and service are always the best. Plain Jane Mike had never had Czech food, and he was willing to try it. As we searched the menu, I told him to try the combo, a cabbage roll, a sausage, sweet kraut, and Czech fries. So when we order, he gets an open face beef sandwich, cause he's afraid he might not like the taste of Czech food. He's such a chicken! I ordered sausage, kraut, and Czech fries, and let him try each. He liked everything. What are Czech fries you ask? Sliced, grilled potatoes with onions and Czech seasoning. Had lunch there today, had a grilled chicken plate- 13.99, chicken was very very thin with no flavor, Czech fries were good, my salad seemed like a left over one not fresh, several pieces of rusted lettuce. He had sausage & kraut plate- 12.99, sausage was good but kraut was terrible, not all the way cooked, big pieces and tough. Plates of food used to be good and large portions but today was not, and it wasn't worth the $32.00 we wasted on small portions and just not good food on a good note the tea was good. :) We used to love this place but not today, it was bad, won't be trying it again. read more

This is definitely one of those down to earth, country style restaurant where you're going to find simple, loving people. Although I was expecting more Czechoslovakian food, the Reuben called my name out of everything I saw on the list. I ordered that, along with their famous czech Fries. The Reuben was actually really good! It had a great corned beef taste, sauerkraut enhances rather than distracting the meal, and the bread was everything I had hoped for in my sandwich. I don't know how much butter or oil they use to toast the Reuben, but it certainly enhances the experience. Soft, yet still crunchy. The czech fries were nothing special. DON'T RISK YOUR LIFE TO EAT HERE. IT'S NOT WORTH IT. We walked in and immediately saw that they were not wearing masks and not social distancing. Literally, now, more Americans die from Covid every day than the attack on Pearl Harbor. These employees refuse to take it seriously and protect their customers from the spread. When we turned around and walked back out they were so extremely rude. Screaming about rights, yelling names at us like "snowflakes" and cussing at us. These people are animals. This place should absolutely be put out of business if they refuse to comply with public safety. Instead check out The Tipsy Lion Bar and Grill. I had really high hopes, because I love a good hole in the wall, but this didn't place didn't really deliver the goods. Love the homey/authentic/old school atmosphere. The cabbage rolls were the best things we ordered. The service was a-OK. All the rest was a bit of a let down, like the cooks are phoning it in--particularly the pierogies, which nearly made me cry, half because I'm Polish and haven't had good pierogi in ages and half because I was just hangry. Pretty sure these were straight out of the freezer. We also ordered the Big Red ice cream, which we were told was homemade. My 4-year-old said it had the texture of a snow cone, and he had to hack through big chunks of ice to eat it. Nothing creamy about that "ice cream." In short -- small town cafe serving all the usual homestyle classics. The other week, I stopped in and tried their Big Al burger, which is just their name for a half pound burger as opposed to their regular quarter pound burger. All in all, it was a solid burger and a big improvement over picking up fast food. I also had a side of tater tots, which were very crispy and a significant improvement over most fast food tots. The service is also friendly, although it can be hit or miss at times. Short version -- a great option for all the country/home cooking standards.
