Truly among the best eateries in Texas. Granny Dee's Pierogi is worth visiting. I was driving through Ennis, took a quick detour through Main Street, and stumbled upon this wonderful restaurant. This place is truly a gem. The service is incredible, and the space is super inviting and comfortable. I tried the Pierogi plate with the Potato and Cheddar with Jalapeño and the Mexican Picadillo options. Upon leaving, I regretted not placing an additional order to go. Wonderful by every available metric. Five stars!

So, hubbs' old plane decided to call it quits over at the Ennis Airport, which meant an unexpected trek out there to deliver a part. Naturally, I saw this as a lunch opportunity not to be wasted! Who knew Lewisville is a hotbed for Polish and Hungarian food? A few places popped up, but I settled on this gem right in downtown. It was past the lunch rush, and our friendly server gave us the scoop: most popular items were the Dill Pickle Soup and either the Kielbasa Sandwich or the Hot Czech Sandwich. We went with the Hot Czech (love a sandwich with some mystery), a cup of soup, and a pierogi trio to split. The Dill Pickle Soup arrived at, well... room temp. I asked if it was supposed to be cold, and our server looked mortified, saying they'd just loaded the soup hopper and it hadn't heated up yet. She whisked it away, warmed it up, and returned with an apology--no biggie! Then came this monstrosity of a sandwich. The meat was practically busting out, twice the size of the bun, spicy, messy, and totally delicious. The pierogis were decent--though I wished for a bit more pan-fried crispiness. All in all, a quirky spot that made our unexpected adventure totally worth it.

Step into this quaint little European-feel restaurant nestled in the beautiful downtown area of Ennis. The family-owned establishment has authentic home-cooked Polish food. Very clean and well kept! We ordered Granny Dee's Pierogi plate with three different fillings: 1) potato, cheddar cheese, bacon and Chives; 2) Potato Ruskie (Potato, caramelized onions and farmers cheese); 3) Smoked Kielbasa meat. Also had the sides of Mizernia (cucumber salad) and Haliski (noodle, cabbage, onion and bacon) The Pierogi's were amazing, full of flavor. The Haliski was a variety of flavors and was excellent. Also, the Mizernia was refreshing and flavorful. We had the German apple cake w/ vanilla cream frosting -- a delight to our pallets! Many things on the menu we want to try when we return. Overall experience was 5 stars!

Found this gem perusing through Yelp while we were near the historic downtown of Ennis. The restaurant is very bright and clean. The food here is absolutely phenomenal and you can tell that the owner (Granny Dee) is passionate about sharing her love for Polish food! The pierogis were "Texas" sized and generally bigger than what you'd expect. I am not complaining because I wanted more of it after each bite! Between my husband and I, we tried every flavor Granny Dee had to offer (except for the mushroom & Seasoned sweet cabbage and sauerkraut) Pierogi Recommendations: 1) Potato, cheddar cheese and Jalapeño 2) Potato, cheddar cheese, bacon and chives 3) Italian (not traditional, but very tasty and unique!) The Dill Pickle Soup was also super delicious! Even though this was an hour drive away, we will definitely make the trip back and bring our Polish family members :)

We came here the day after Christmas and it was wonderful! Great family owned polish plate. Grandma Dee was there and was our server while we were there, and she was so friendly and great to talk to. The food came out quick. My mom got the cabbage rolls and loved them, my dad got the ennis Czech sandwich which he enjoyed, my husband got the polish plate with a sampling of everything, and I got a potato pancake and two pierogis. The pierogis were the best part! They were cooked perfectly. I had the bacon, cheese, and potato, and the jalapeño, cheese, and potato. The texture was perfect and they were so delicious! The jalapeño was my favorite, it wasn't too spicy and had the best flavor. The nice thing is they sell the pierogis by the dozen or frozen, so you could get them for a big group or store them! We will be back!

Great home made authentic pierogis! This was our first time in but definitely will not be our last. We thoroughly enjoyed our meals. Server was attentive and offered drink refills along with to-go drinks when we were leaving. There was no one else in the restaurant while we were there which is unfortunate. The place was very clean, updated and tidy. Hopefully someone can drum up some well deserved business for them because everything was great and they deserve more customers.

Granny Dee's is a lovely place! Newly added to a historic building, it's a perfect food addition to the restaurant scene here in Ennis. We ordered pierogis, of course, and I added Hualuski, a buttery noodle dish with bacon, onion and cabbage as well as a stuffed cabbage roll. What I discovered was some truly delicious authentic Polish pierogis. My favorite was the Ruskie; a potato, farmers cheese and carmelized onion filled delight. The pastry was very tender and my husband tried the combo plate and his were gone in a flash. The noodles were a very generous serving but a little dry. I took them home and added a little more butter. The flavor was terrific, though. The cabbage roll was different from your usual Czech or Americanized cabbage roll in that it was dense, almost sausage like, with a fairly thin cabbage wrap. The tomato sauce was tasty; still it wasn't something I would order again. My husband liked it, though. They have an interesting menu with sandwiches and soups and sides. Granny Dee's has a lot going on. They were busy at closing. This looks like a family business and a really nice place to dine in downtown Ennis. Service was helpful and friendly. We didn't have to wait long. There are plenty of tables facing big glass windows. Comfortable restrooms are outside the dining area off a hallway for all of the businesses in this beautiful building.

The server was very welcoming and friendly. It was obvious that one man sitting nearby was a regular, since she called him by name, That seemed like a good sign! My husband ordered chicken strips, fries and green beans. I ordered the liver and onions (which I can seldom find), their "Czech fries," (with a menu description of special seasoning), and green beans. The food arrived fairly promptly, and immediately I was perplexed. The chicken tenders looked like pre-formed frozen patties, very flat. The green beans were loaded with onions, which my husband hates, and he never would have ordered if he'd known that. He immediately slid his bowl of beans over to me. My Czech "fries" were definitely not fries. They were essentially scalloped potatoes with sliced onions. They tasted fine, but whatever special seasoning they used was hard to taste. I do have to say that the liver was delicious, perfectly cooked, and the cream gravy I requested was the perfect addition. My husband said his chicken strips tasted ok, but they were certainly not the type of strips we're used to from local restaurants. My overall opinion is that this is a place that's been there a long time, locals are used to eating there and comfortable with being recognized, and don't care that the interior just looks tired and dated. It wasn't a bad experience, but we wouldn't make another 88-mile trip back to West just to eat there.

Taste of Europe - Arlington…read more This place is not the same as it was 20+ years ago. It's gone downhill. Overpriced. Small portions. Mediocre quality. Very misleading. OUTSIDE: You can tell that they don't take care of the building. The once beautiful mural on the side of the building is now faded and has not had any brushes of strokes to revive the once vibrant colors. The parking lot has seen better days. INTERIOR: Once you enter inside, on each side of the entrance is a beautiful Russian themed murals of old folk tale's characters. You'll also see Russian themed nesting dolls and a famous chef picture visited here in 2016, Guy Fieri. The dining room looks outdated, dingy and too much wasted open space. They could use more tables and chairs. When it first opened it looked so much better. I used to come here a lot as a child and it was so nice that you could enjoy authentic Russian cuisines. Afterwards, go look around at the Russian souvenirs you might want to buy. They also offered a large selection of Russian sweets and other Russian products you could take home. Unfortunately, as of January 2026, the grocery store closed. The large collection of authentic Russian souvenirs have long been discontinued to be sold here. Now, it's just a dingy and outdated space. I fully understand that the new owner is trying his best. But, as someone that used to come here a lot, I can tell you with full certainty, there is nothing Russian about this place anymore. In the main dining room, it would do them good to add some paintings. As of 2026, the walls are bare and the place looks like they are barely surviving. CUISINE: I came here with my family to check out this place and see if anything changed or stayed the same. Overpriced food with small portions. We ordered Olivie Salad and it was $5.99 for half a cup. The salad was great and reminded me of childhood. The presentation of the salad wasn't the best from what I remember. The original owner took pride in making every dish look creative. It came in a beautiful Russian crystal bowl. Now, they serve you plain white bowl and the presentation is mediocre. PELMENI: We also ordered Pelmeni, $17.99. As someone who is from Russia, Pelmeni has always been the epicenter of Russian traditional dish. It has a very distinct texture and flavors. You could either make it the right way, like your grandmother used to make. By hand, with love. Or, you could do it the modern way and just buy frozen. Dump it into boiling water until the dough surfaces to the top. Previous owner, used the old methods. Every Pelmeni was made by hand, in house. It wasn't frozen and the taste reminded you of your grandmother's cooking. Now, they buy frozen Pelmeni and go the easy route of boiling them for five to ten minutes. The taste was ok, but you could tell that they were not made in house. We asked our waitress and she confirmed that they're store bought, frozen. The presentation was mediocre at best. The bowl had too much water in it. The water and Pelmeni had blend flavor. Hardly any seasoning was on it. I dumped all the water from my Pelmeni bowl into another bowl. The only good thing about this dish was having a good portion of sour cream to go with it. SERVICE: The service was mediocre, too. Our waitress didn't seem like she wanted to be there and rushed us to order. Which is ironic, considering that only few guests were inside. She didn't come by and asked if we wanted any drink refills. After we finished eating, another man came over and asked if we wanted dessert and we declined. He brings us our check and says, "You pay upfront."Customer service can improve here and be more guest focused. OVERALL: After visiting this place and seeing the state that it's in, I think they are on survivor mode and may very well close their doors soon. They have to revamp this place. "Eye appeal is buy appeal." Repaint the outside. Dining room, add more lights and change the flooring. The floor tiles look like from an outdated restroom. At this time, after my visit, in good faith, I cannot recommend this place.

You'd think for a $9 hotdog it would be grilled. The chili on it was cheap can chili and only a couple fritos. The twister chips were just gross in general, no flavor and way too greasy. My daughter said her corndog was good but it also fell apart, the breading pulled off of the dog when she tried to pull the stick out. Everything was pickled and very intense flavor. Both entrees were great and i also like the fact that they have a kid's menu that serves german food. My wife and I decided to take our kids out tonight to try German food. The service tonight was abysmal. We waited for twenty minutes for our waiter. When someone finally arrived, he was rather abrupt and rude. Tables around us who were seated immediately received bread before us. Our pickled vegetable side and a beer was brought out promptly, but this would be the only part of our order we received. We waited for over an hour without being checked in on one time. Once! The waiter appeared from the kitchen a couple of times clearly eating something and then disappeared for almost half an hour. When he finally reappeared I asked for more bread, as the kids were getting antsy. He did not verbally respond to this, but walked off and returned with a basket which he more or less tossed on the table, making an obvious effort to avoid eye contact with me. After an hour and fifteen, someone else came by and asked if we were okay. We responded that we were just waiting for our food. This person, too, disappeared without a response. At an hour and a half--kids hungry and depleted of whatever patience they had--we left. This makes a bitter end to what has otherwise been a joyful patronage to a local legend.
