I had two encounters with this bank location in Irvine and my impression was that they will not go above and beyond their work. They have little interest in customer service or customer value. For a small bank that does not appear to be filled with clients, the people are not efficient and they try to work based on appointments only. This is the only bank that I've been to that does not see the potential in a new client, will not open accounts within 10 minutes of closing time, works based on appointments only, and requires you to fill out a form that documents how much money you have in all of your bank accounts before speaking to you regarding your needs. I understand not all HSBC branches work this way but this is one branch that needs a make-over. My home branch in Canada with a different bank (CIBC) makes sure a client is completely satisfied before the client leaves the branch and I have even had my branch manager stop me on my way out because she felt that the teller's performance was inadequate. I recently closed my account with HSBC at this location because there is no FREE basic checking anymore. $3 monthly maintenance fees are ridiculous. Anyways, I was super happy with them when I was in Asia - Shanghai, China to be exact. There were not that many ATMs where I was but I managed to utilize the one closest to me - it was like a 15-20min walk. The biggest thing that I enjoyed about this bank was that whenever I used my debit card, they would not charge me international fees and what not. That was hugely appreciated and the money exchange rate would be the best as compared to exchanging money at a real branch. (Because it is subject to commission fees and the days exchange rates) Overall, I was happy with HSBC except it was annoying how you have to keep a min of $500 in the savings acct and they charge you if you dont ($3). I got deducted like $12 because it was at $499! Stupid. Too many fees HSBC! You lost my business. read more

Walked in to open an account. Walked right back out after hearing a manager talking to one of the tellers like a child. The male teller I was in line for was helping a customer and the other female teller had to be closing her drawer. Her "manager" started talking down to her like she was above the task she was asking her employee to do. It was so bad the male teller turned around with disgust. If the manager treats the employees with such disrespect, what would I be in store for if I was trying to get a problem solved if I had opened an account. As a manager you are suppose to be approachable. Why would anyone, customer or employee allow something like that to happen. I really hope both those tellers reported that manager to HR. The only way HSBC attracts customers is by offering the most % return on accounts, otherwise this bank would have been closed long ago. I opened several accounts at this bank but only for the high interest rate. When I opened the accounts and deposited the money, they completely refused to provide copies of any documents I signed and/or related to my personal and business accounts. This is illegal in the state of CA as state law requires any business entity that requires a signed contract to conduct business with the public, must provide a copy of any such signed document(s). I have bank accounts at 15 other banks and not one of them have ever refused to provide copies of the documents I sign when opening the account. What made my experience worse was the smug attitude that the bank manager (Dalal) and her employees displayed in their almost enjoyment in denying my request. I plan on taking their money while these promotions are open ultimately teaching them a lesson that when you conduct business in the USA, you must abide by our laws, not those of the ethically bankrupt country you are based. I suggest others do the same, take their money and move it once their promotions end. I'm not going to bore others with the multitude of other customer service fails this branch has but some include ridiculous wait times, incompetent employees (I had to come back 4 times to open 2 accounts because they couldn't get the paperwork correct). Truly, it's a complete joke referring to this place as a financial institution, it would be more appropriate to compare it to your local DMV. read more

Stay away from HSBC and don't bank with them! It has outsourced their customer service to India and the accent of those people sometimes drives customers crazy, and those reps. are untrained as they very often provide misleading information to customers---incorrectly interest amount and incorrect maturity date. I have a CD with them since 2016 and they did not correctly reflect the interest I have earned and their online banking is a piece of shit---you can't see all the transactions and I have never seen such an account so ridiculous like this. They said the interest I have earned is $115 but it's showing only half of it, and when I asked them why I can't see the total interest, they said they have to "hold the other half just in case of penalty for early withdrawal." What a ridiculous and unbelievable excuse!!! Don't be lured by their so-called "promotional CDs" as they only want to lure customers to open accounts. Once you have opened an account you will see tons of problems and issues and their customer service is totally useless. I wish I could give a "zero" rating if it's available. I visited this branch on a Saturday in order to establish an account. The teller staff were helpful, and I received an appointment with an account manager promptly. The entire process took approximately 30 minutes, during which time they checked my credentials, reviewed account details, and provided me with paperwork. The account manager was professional, business-like and thorough - which is the kind of demeanor you'd want from a business that handles money for the U.S. and abroad. I thought the 1.5 stars must be a mistake. It's rare on Yelp to see that especially with quite a few 'real' reviews. But I thought it couldn't be true so I went to setup a new interest earning savings account with a very large check in hand (way past their minimum deposit requirement) but now I know first hand that the other reviews are 'real' and that no one at the branch has any clue about customer service. I got a lot of condescending attitude and questioning about setting up a new savings account. I was told I had to already be a 'premier member' and that I had to preschedule an appointment online before I could come in despite seeing at least 3 bankers in their cubicles not currently working with any customers. Without asking about how much I wanted to deposit she indicated that I probably didn't have enough. I could go into more details about how poor my experience was but it isn't worth my time to type it all in because obviously they dont have anyone, branch manager or at the corporate level, that reads or cares about customer service and their Yelp rating and the feedback they are getting on Yelp that they ignore. Pretty amazing for a bank as large as HSBC. But maybe that's part of the problem. read more

HSBC = How Simple Becomes Complicated So, if you are one of those people who likes abuse, HSBC is the bank for you. I had a relationship with this bank that lasted over a decade. Most of the time it was a good relationship...until the Feds dropped the hammer on them after they were caught laundering money for Big Pharma down in Mexico. Since then, HSBC systematically pulled all their ATM machines and closed all their branches in San Diego. Unless you live in Los Angeles, the closest branch in operation in South OC and San Diego is in Irvine. So HSBC commits the crimes and it's their customers who pay the price. The service in Irvine is brutal...at best. The simplest of transactions could not be done until you were basically put on "trial" as to what you wanted to do with your own money. Mind you, there is hardly ever anyone in the branch and yet they still take 20-minutes to perform the most basic of transactions. So, after years of being promised that all non-HSBC ATM fees would be refunded to me (and never were) I decided that enough was enough. I switched banks. I take that back...I tried to switch banks. I actually closed my accounts 5-weeks ago. It was training day for another Irvine HSBC teller who can barely speak English...so not 1 but 2 managers were over-looking this poor guy's every move. I assumed even HSBC could close my accounts without a hassle right? WRONG! I find out someone charged something to my account...2-weeks after I "closed" it. So, now everyone and their mothers at HSBC is looking for me because they want me to fund the account (that was "closed") before they send me to collections. HUH? Long story short, after several calls, we agreed on a process to close the accounts...only now I wanted it in writing. Only according to Branch Manager Wisly Wai Mak, she refused to send me a simple email confirming the accounts were closed. Finally, she send me a sarcastic email "YOUR ACCOUNTS ARE CLOSED". OK...good start Wisly Wai Mak, but how about attaching the account numbers to that confirmation? Am I really asking too much? It's not like I was asking HSBC to find the cure for Ebola...I was asking them to confirm my accounts, which I "closed" 5-weeks before, were actually closed this time...so if anyone calls me and tells me it was not done I could stick Wisly Wai Mak's email up the banks incredibly ignorant asses. The worst bank I have ever been to, PERIOD. Extremely rude. I went in and spoke with a teller and asked if I can get a loan. She was somewhat nice and told me to wait for George. I waited for about twenty minutes. I was told that George was on this major conference call. I can clearly see George in his corner cubicle chatting away. Then George got off his phone and was chatting with his co-worker for awhile. Then his co-worker told me that George will not see me and gave me George's card saying that George will not see me and he only takes appointments. Not surprised at all that this branch has a 1.5 start rating. Opened up a checking account online. Came into the branch to make a cash deposit for my new checking account. They said that there is a glitch in their system so it linked up with my account I had opened 6 years ago. It took them 20 mins to figure that out. Then I told them, this is too much rift raft. I asked them to please just close my account. I no longer want to bank with you. Then they took another 20 mins trying to figure things out. They come back after the additional 20 mins to tell me that they can not close my account. Since I opened my account online, I can only close my account via phone with a customer service representative. I mean wtf? I'm in person in the branch with all my proper ID and they can't close MY account??? And it took them over 40 mins to figure all this out? The manager is an absolute joke. I recently converted my old internet checking account. It was still free!! I was lucky and got grand fathered but I needed checks. I reluctantly converted it. They are a number of minimum balance fees although, I will say that while traveling in the Philippines, having this bank saved my sister and I! We both banked with WaMu (now Chase.) While we were traveling, we couldn't access our Chase accounts. It was great to be able to access my HSBC account without additional fees. read more

The initial wait times for a chance to sit with a branch relationship banker were a bit off for us however the banker did greet us shortly after we got there and informed us politely that some one would be with us shortly. they had asked us to fill a small and simple form to inform them on how they could assist us. Our banker Mr. Lopez was super nice and tried to accommodate our needs to the best of his abilities. We were very happy with the service. I've been a member of HSBC online banking for years. Without having a telephone access code it's a VERY frustrating process to get to talk to a person on the phone (takes about 20 mins of waiting). Their security questions are endless. Ever since they implemented additional security codes to log on to their internet banking it's all gone downhill. It took 42 min on the phone to reset passwords. We visited this branch today with a check to cash from a premier account which maintains a significant balance. The check was almost $5k and was a loan between family members offered as a Christmas gift. It took almost 40 minutes at the teller to achieve this. Not only was no apology offered for the long delay, but when asked that the $5 fee for non-customer check-cashing be waived as a courtesy, that request was denied by the manager, Steven. This was a very specific amount to help pay off a specific loan, given to a family member with the same last name and address. Steven even had the audacity to say, "well, anyone can have the same last name" implying that we were lying; we were not. The account holder personally spoke to them on the phone, but they said that the only way to avoid them getting their $5 cut was for the account holder to make the withdrawal in-person. This is an account on which HSBC probably make $5 every couple of hours due to investing the holdings. Of course, the amount is not the issue; it's the fact that a specific loan amount given to help a family member was reduced because HSBC would rather make a significant client drive to their branch before offering a $5 courtesy. Nickel and dime'ing clients who trust you with significant holdings is not a good way to generate loyalty and reflects very badly on HSBC's brand identity. I suggest you take your business elsewhere, and certainly avoid this branch, who apparently don't know the first thing about customer service. Slow, rude, unreasonable, and generally terrible service. read more

I closed my account here two weeks ago and the teller told me it was fine to cut up my cards and gave me a cashier's check for the remaining amount. However, a week later, I received an email from HSBC saying that my account was being assessed a fee for low funds. When I called the head office in NY and also went to the Garden Grove branch, they told me that this Irvine branch didn't actually close any accounts at all. I later got conflicting reasons for why the account wasn't closed (i.e., only a request went in, it normally takes a few days to close, etc.) none of which made any sense. I was very, very disappointed. What's worse was how they tried to rope me back into the bank and made it seem like it was my fault for not following up. Even my online account was still active. If you are looking for a bank, choose something other than HSBC. if you're already with HSBC, use a different branch. If you want to close your HSBC account and transfer to another bank, make sure they do it on the spot (and not a week later). read more

I had all the documentation they needed and did the same thing with other banks which took only 5 minutes. They had plenty available customer care reps, but of course they would not help because none of them were able to make that change in the account. They don't work on Saturdays. They are close during local holidays when none of the businesses even none of the schools are closed. I really wonder if any of SUPERVISORS or managers read these reviews. If they don't, they SHOULD.
