About 10 days into it, the original loan officer with a different bank quits his job, leaving us in a panic. Our realtor found Oscar at HSBC. Needed to close out an inactive account for my parents. The account was setup 50 when it was Midlands bank in UK. Trying to talk to someone over the phone in UK was not going the way we needed. Do we went down to the branch in Irvine. Terrance Chen spent 2.5 hours on the phone with us to get the account closed and money transferred to the US. I never physically visited this location, but I'm very impressed with the bank in general... mostly due to the $450 Welcome Deposit offer I signed up under. Opened the account in Oct 21, and received my bonus in March of 22 after fulfilling the direct deposit requirement. I really enjoyed instantaneous bank to bank transfers, once the initial transfer completed successfully (which took about 3 business days). I would give zero stars if I could. I walk in and all they have is a small table with two ladies and 4 chairs for a waiting room. We couldn't pay our rent online and we aren't sure why. Could be on their end but I won't blame them for that because I'm not sure why it wouldn't go through. So I had to drive 30 mins to get to their bank to deposit. I walk in with the check and deposit slip. They tell me to go sit down. Ummmmmm ok ? That's never happened before in my life. I really really need to use the restroom and I ask if they have one. Nope. Not for you. Then later she comes over and tells me that they don't accept checks for people's rent !!!! What ?? I am trying to make a deposit !!! Does anyone know if this is standard practice or way out there? In my opinion anyone should be able to make a deposit if they know the account and name of the account. Then later she says that she will be going to the back to make the transaction this one time. I told her we tried online and that's our preference anyway..... I am not sure why anyone would bank here.... It was Such a poor experience that even a day later I'm super motivated to warn people. When you finally meet a banker and they try to help, they need a higher authority approval and their manager won't help you. Their online customer service doesn't help also. So, I needed a bank for my new job, and I was told about this bank. I looked them up and saw this location, great! I get there and was seen by this man in a suit, he did not greet me or my husband. He came over, and acted as if we weren't good enough to bank there. He refused to talk to me, but would talk down to my husband. But he did eventually shove us onto a woman. I'm omitting her name as she wasn't exactly the whole problem. We were asked if anyone told us about them, and we said yes. We were then asked for the number, and until the end of our trip there, we were hounded for that number. I was never given a number. We asked what the start up fee was, and we were given a run around. We were only told we could give cash or check, but never an amount. Then, my ID doesn't my newest address, and so my husband thought we could open a joint account (since his license is updated) and we were told no. That we had to have separate account so I could refer him so I could get referral money, and he wouldn't get anything. Then they needed a proof of address for me since my ID is not updated. I saw this coming. And when my husband said most the mail is addressed to him (with exception of certain bank statements, and most packages) because his name is on everything. The man and the woman seemed shocked by that fact. Wherever the woman and us went, that man followed us. She also found it quite adorable that I didn't recall my social off the type of my head, and in a polite way told us to leave. Very rude, and not very welcoming of people who are non-Asian. I've never been treated this way by any Asian person - child, female, adult, elderly person - in my life. It wasn't just my husband and myself. Other Asians walked in and were greeted and promptly saw too, an older white man (maybe half Hispanic?) wasn't greeted and was promptly shooed out of the bank. Terrible. I'm only giving ONE star because I couldn't give ZERO. By far THE WORSE bank known yo man. I opened both checking & savings accounts. Had my direct deposit set up from my Emoloyet. I went to with draw money , ATM card was capturd. I was told account were suspended for suspicious activity. I asked whst kind and if I could vetofy activity they declined to give me any informatiob. It's been 10 days without access to my money or accounts. I called again today. They told me it will be an additional 60 days before they have a tespinse. I said what are you looking gif or how cab help as my rent has still not been paid for the month. He said "sorry". I don't know who ti call or what to do. My experience at this particular branch was so satisfying that I felt it deserved a glowing review. After some horrendous service from Citi Bank I decided to give HSBC a try being that it is local to my house. Immediately, I was greeted at the door with a pleasant smile and was asked what they could do for me! It's little things like this that as a customer I appreciate. Even though the branch was full of people I was referred to Mia Pham to help get started on establishing my LLC. I had every expectation of this process being painfully slow and not fun. However, Mia was incredibly helpful and concise with all the relevant paperwork that needed to be taken care of. Her expertise in her field was clearly head and shoulders above any other banking representative I've ever dealt with. She even found a way to save me money on transfer fees just by having both a personal and business account with the bank! It's safe to say that I will continue banking with HSBC and will certainly take care of all my sensitive transactions at this branch because of the great service that Mia provided. read more

What kind of $%@^ operation are they running here? I came here to speak with a banker regarding an account issue. I e-mailed the banker to make sure he was there. He replied back and said come by any time and so I headed right over. I signed in at the front and waited. No one else was in front of me and a representative came over 2-3 times to check the sheet and walked away. Didn't greet me, didn't ask if I needed help. After ONE HOUR of waiting, I e-mailed the banker again to see if I should have made an appointment with him. I was finally escorted back to his cubical. Literally 5 minutes into talking, two women barged in and started asking him questions about opening an account. They were obviously wealthy, inpatient, and entitled. The banker said he'll be with them shortly. They said okay and just stood there. The banker then turned to me and said, "I can finish this up without you, let me take these folks". What.the.eff With crappy customer service, combined with crap clientele, and the most inconvenient operating times (Monday - Friday 9:00 am to 4:00 pm) it's no wonder this place has 1.5 stars. If it wasn't for a huge presence in Asia and the loaded hordes of mainland Chinese in the Irvine area, this branch would not be in business. Stay away. read more

This bank keeps messing with my life. Did my last review talk about the car or my China issues? Well they are at it again this time sabotaging my tuition funds. I hope automation completely wipes out their retail operations. These people are despicable in that a lot of the stress you get here is not due to technicalities of banking, it's that they really do not have any intent to help you. They wouldn't cash my checks for tuition so I literally asked them, "so can you advise me on how to resolve this issue?" Their LITERAL answer was no. I even handed the teller an answer on a plate, "so I should resolve this outside and come back to deposit the funds, right?", to which she shrugged and declined to give any answer. When I called the issuing bank on how to get my checks cashed they told me I just have to be stern with them and ask for the manager because it sounds like they have no idea what they are doing. This bank would be gone if not for all the shady China money they are facilitating in this area. edit - I returned after getting the receipts for these checks from the person who bought them. They still would not cash the checks, and they talked to me as if I was trying to defraud the bank. At no point beyond the greeting was I treated as a customer. The One-Liner: Make an appointment and be pushy. The Main Course: Though there's long waits at the teller I imagine it's due to this branch dealing with many foreign accounts and transactions. My issue is with the arrangements to see representatives. This place fills up pretty fast and as the seats in the waiting area start to get crowded people begin to walk up to the cubicles and just lurk until they get service. Slowest service. There can be a very short line of one or two but will take long as if the line was a dozen deep. And they never have all 3 tellers available. My wife and I are doing business overseas and we're directed to this bank for synchronized funds exchange between our US account and abroad. A complicated process for sure, but the online customer service was extremely helpful. They directed us to this branch and they have been very helpful, courteous and professional. We have only been here twice with a third time today in the past three weeks, all to finalize this inter country connection. After that, we do suspect we will need to come in too often after that. This is the worst bank I've ever had. (We've had business with around 10 banks) One day, we received a phone call from our customer saying that they cannot wire money into our account because it is closed. With doubt, we called our bank and found that they've closed our account without ANY notification. They said, they did, but we DID NOT. No letters, no email, no phone call, they just closed our account. Any business owner knows how damaging this can be for the company. We went to this branch to ask for the reason, they couldn't provide any good reason, they just simply said their headquarter decided to close our account. No sincere follow up, no apology, totally not care about their customer. The service is just terrible. I had a horrible experience at this bank. My 87 year old grandfather who has major hearing loss has an account with this bank. I tried to change his address over the phone. A call center in India made it extremely difficult to update his address, to update his address took 1 hour!! Next, we went into the Irvine branch (closest branch from South Orange County), after a 30-40 minute drive and they said he didn't have enough identification to make any changes. Then when my grandfather needed to use the bathroom, one teller said no, walk across the street to CVS. When I got obviously upset because my grandfather can't walk very far, the other teller let him use their bathroom. We are returning tomorrow to close his account and I already assume we will have difficulty doing so, I'm dreading the whole experience!! Terrible bank, stay away!!!!! read more

I had two encounters with this bank location in Irvine and my impression was that they will not go above and beyond their work. They have little interest in customer service or customer value. For a small bank that does not appear to be filled with clients, the people are not efficient and they try to work based on appointments only. This is the only bank that I've been to that does not see the potential in a new client, will not open accounts within 10 minutes of closing time, works based on appointments only, and requires you to fill out a form that documents how much money you have in all of your bank accounts before speaking to you regarding your needs. I understand not all HSBC branches work this way but this is one branch that needs a make-over. My home branch in Canada with a different bank (CIBC) makes sure a client is completely satisfied before the client leaves the branch and I have even had my branch manager stop me on my way out because she felt that the teller's performance was inadequate. The HSBC local branch in Irvine has a lot to do before meeting any respectable customer-service standards. read more

This bank is the worst bank that I have ever seen, period, end of story!! Went in to open an account and was told to make an appointment because no one was in to facilitate it. Came back the following day and one person was in. Took about an hour of gathering personal information before he told me that his system was down!! BUT HE SAVED THE INFORMATION!! I should have stopped at that point, but I came back a third time and it took another 40 minutes and finally got an account open. Stopped in yesterday. Two clerks and several customers in line. Took 25 minutes to make another large deposit (thousands). Additionally , I wanted to cash a very small check, $22.00. Because my account did not have my wife as a co owner, and the check had my wife and I as payees, I was told that they couldn't cash it!!!! The management was non existent. Customer service is non existent. At least now, I can write checks and will never visit that branch again. I always thought that HSBC was a major bank but if this is what they want their clients to experience, then they can expect these kinds of reviews.
