I always go here on my trips to Galveston. Hruska's has some of the best food I've ever tasted. My recommendations are the chicken sandwich and cheeseburger. I've purchased numerous souvenirs as well. That being said, I have had a bad experience here before. My grandmother didn't know that she had to pay for something before eating and she sat in the eating area while a bunch of employees eyed her, as if she were a malicious shoplifter. When I attempted to leave the store, I was accosted by an employee until I paid for the $2.50 item. Despite that happening, I will still be coming here whenever I pass by. read more

Hruska's is a solid stopping point between Houston and Austin. Coming here for the first time this past weekend, I wonder why I never made a stop here sooner?! We normally always stop at Buc-ee's, but this might have taken over that tradition. We often take road trips between Houston and Austin almost monthly just for fun, and I've always seen Hruska's but never stopped. I'm so glad curiosity finally got the best of us! I'll admit it's not as big as Buc-ee's, and its not as clean like the restrooms at Buc-ee's, but Hruska's definitely wins in the country store/family vibe category. There is a good number of gas pumps, parking spots, snacks, and drinks to choose from, but most importantly is their KOLACHES! Kolaches are the REAL reason you need to stop here. Walking in, I was curious why there was such a long bakery line, but after ordering their kolaches, I now know why. I tried their sausage, cheese, and jalapeno kolache, and their pumpkin and cream cheese kolache. Just from taking a bite from the soft bread, you know these are the real CZECH style kolaches. The jalapeno wasn't too spicy, cheese was well melted, and the sausage still had a snap to it. The pumpkin and cream cheese kolache was PERFECT now that the weather got a little cooler. We stopped at Hruska's at the recommendation of a friend and we were not disappointed. We ordered cheeseburgers and kolaches. The cheeseburger was juicy and a nice combo of salt and pepper to bring home a traditional cheeseburger taste. The kolaches were good with the bread portion being the highlight over the filling. The bread was very soft with a nice hint of butter. Hruska's also has tables for you to enjoy your burgers inside instead of in your vehicle. The store also offered items to-go that ranged from baked goods to beef jerky. The staff was very friendly and this stop definitely added to our day. read more

If you're making the trip from Houston to Austin this place is a must stop!! they have the most amazing kolaches in every flavor imaginable, from savory to sweet. this place is very busy during breakfast hours, but definitely easy to navigate after that. My favorite kolache is the pan sausage, cheese and jalapeño. i have yet to try their sweet kolaches so can't speak on those. standard gas station fare for road trips. chips, soda coffee all standard price. they also have a small gift shop with toys and Texas souvenirs. read more

My father and mother-in-law live in Houston and used to stop at Hruska's on their way to Austin. They spoke very highly of the store and looked forward to stopping there to stretch their legs and get a bite to eat. However, on their most recent visit, one of the store's employees accused my father-in-law of stealing merchandise from the store. As best we can tell, she saw him take his glasses out of his shirt pocket to look at some jewelry, then put his glasses away when he was finished, and she assumed that he was stealing the jewelry when she saw his hand go back in his shirt pocket. Trust me - my FIL and MIL have no reason to steal anything from a gas station store. They're both upstanding members of their community and have more than enough money to buy whatever they want/need. He's 74 years old for God's sake! When's the last time you heard of a senior citizen stealing jewelry from a gas station store? To add insult to injury, my MIL called the store afterwards to report the incident to the owner and the owner denied that the employee worked there. (something we confirmed via a followup call by asking for the employee by name and her typical hours) I'm not sure what's going on with the owner and employees of this store, but they've lost our family's business (and anyone else we can tell!) for life. read more

I love roadside kolache stops! When I see kolache in big letters, we're taking a pit stop. I was hit in the face with a really tall menu of kolaches as soon as I opened the door. I wasn't expecting so much variety. The boudin was REALLY good as was the sausage and cabbage. They were out of sausage and sauerkraut, so I have a goal for next time. The veggie kolache looked like it would be minimal on the filling and more bready, but when you bite into it, they completely filled the bottom with mushroom and spinach, then rolled the sides into that kolache shape. It is deceptively dense. The staff was nice as I had to walk back in twice: to get an additional kolache since my toddler rejected the ones I got, then to warm up her kolache. On that note, if you intend to eat the kolaches immediately, get them warmed up because they are very very cold otherwise. I like that this makes it easier to get a bunch of kolaches to travel with in the cooler and share them with friends. My preference between Houston and Austin was previously 290, but I'll start taking 71 just for this place. read more

So glad I spotted this place off the side of the road and we stopped here. The dough they use for the biscuits and kolaches is amazing. They have so many different options here and everything we tried was delicious. The spinach pastry with mushrooms was the best thing I tried, closely followed by the sausage, jalapeño, and cheese kolache, but honestly nothing here was bad. The little dining area was clean and fully stocked with condiments and utensils and the restrooms were clean as well. read more

Stopped here in the way to Austin and was not disappointed! My fiancé and I grabbed the pan sausage kolache with cheese and jalapeño and shared a double cheeseburger. Kolache: so flavorful and tasty! You can tell it was made very fresh and the meat was super juicy. I'm the bread was also amazing too. Hamburger: a double was HUGE. I could barely take a bite but it was super yummy and filling for two people. The veggies were very crisp and everything tasted fresh. Service was also pretty quick and polite. I have seen so many awesome reviews that I told myself I was going to pop in on my way back from the beach. The parking lot is small so I parked on the side of the street. There is definitely a lot of people stopping here. So that's a good sign. The inside of the store isn't huge like others, but it's definitely a good size where I don't feel suffocated with all the traffic of people coming in and out. They have a bunch of assorted stuff to look at from clothes to pickled items in jars. I saw some grass flip flops and I loved how the history of the store's picture is painted on the top wall. Family owned and operated store since 1912. There are two lines. One near the bakery side and the other on the other side of the bakery. Same menus, but I posted both signs just in case. The kolaches here are pricey compared to other places. I got a sausage Jalapeño cheese kolache. It was good. The jalapeños are placed inside the bread with the cheese. It wasn't a Jalapeño sausage with cheese. I liked that they actually added the cheese and Jalapeño. Hruskas is our favorite breakfast place when visiting Round Top Antique week. You can smell the kolaches baking when you walk in the door. It's pure heaven. The choices are plentiful and so far, every choice I've made has been a good one. Plenty of sweet and savory options. The breakfast burritos are also tasty. If you've never had a kolaches- you really need to make a trip to Hruskas. I love this place. On past trips to Austin I had passed it and noticed all the cars in the parking lot but I never stopped. I searched it up online and saw all the delicious-looking offerings and then finally on one of my more recent trips I stopped. My personal favorite is the pan sausage/sauerkraut kolache dipped in yellow mustard! Their boudin kolache is surprisingly tasty, and the apricot and blueberry-cream cheese dessert rolls are great, too. Do yourself a favor and stop! read more

HATE TO SAY IT, THE BREAD DISAPPOINTS I know this is an institution. I mean the name is legit with the typical improbable double consonant placement but the bread is horrible (see pics). There is way too much of it. It's not that waxy. It is more like a freezer roll than a Kolache bun. It is too thick and doughy. The sausage is miserly, like a clandestinedly placed baby weener in a king cake. Worse the chocolate is milk and has a high acidity cloying taste. Took an alternate route instead of my usual from Austin to Houston just because a friend recommended that I stop by. I only got three sweet kolaches, and they were really good. The pineapple filling was too sweet, but the apricot and apple filling were just right. The bread part tasted very fresh. I will definitely be back to try other bakery items. Holy heck. First off, all of the employees were super helpful, polite, and pleasant. Oh my lord that bakery. I've been here twice before and every time I forget just HOW good everything is. Kolaches (sweet & Savory) bread we're incredible, sweet fillings were plain & natural, the sausage was unique. 100% you have to raid the bakery. Tons of homemade jellies/jams, sauces, local honey. I was watching a television show a few months ago that featured Hruska's and I bookmarked it. Yesterday while on a road trip to Austin, I managed to stop by in the morning. When I walked in, I noticed that this store reminded of a pre-Bucee's atmosphere. Part restaurant, gas station and souvenir shop it is reminiscent of one of the smaller Bucee's stores. They have a large selection of pastries, kolaches, biscuits, cookies etc. I ordered a ham, cheese and egg croissant heated along with a cream cheese strawberry puff. Total with tax for both was $4. Sitting down at one of the tables, I started with the croissant. While it was good (3), a small part of the croissant was harder than the rest and not all of the interior was warm. Not cold but not evenly heated. The puff was very good (4). The cream cheese, strawberry and pastry were tasty and a pleasure to eat. I visited the restroom and everything was clean. I also walked around the souvenir and gift area. I give an overall score of a 3 because everything here is A-OK. This is a pleasant place to stop if you are on Hwy. 71. They also have other items to eat in their restaurant section but is primarily bakery oriented. There are 7-8 gas pumps available. read more

This place was super cool. It's like a smaller bucees, but man the kolaches kit the spot for me unlike other places. Super enjoyed it, staff was friendly and helpful, they have a ton of different snacks and such that I've never seen elsewhere and also a very good and giant burger. Not sure when I'd go again, I don't see myself driving between Austin and Houston ever again (I don't like here, just doing a once in a lifetime road trip)...but I would consider the hike if I was in Austin with a car. read more

Been through Ellinger so many times and never stopped here. Glad I finally had the opportunity. A bit like a general store for the surrounding area. It's pretty much a smorgasbord in here. Lots of snack food and beverage to choose from, with good restroom facilities for the weary traveler. The checkouts are a bit oddly placed, but it must be for a reason. When heading from Houston to Austin, Hruska's and Weikel's are the two competing bakeries on this stretch of 71. They are 12 miles apart and people seem to swear allegiance to one or the other. Currently, Hruska's is a bit of mess. They are doing construction, and the entrance wasn't even obvious. When you walk in, the place is dark, and ordering sandwiches and other food isn't obvious or organized. We used the restrooms which are very new and clean, but I heard some ladies complain about lack of toilet paper, which isn't a big deal since other stalls had it BUT Hruska's advertises their bathrooms as amazingly clean. So, I'd expect toilet paper as well. We ordered some sandwiches for dinner. It's chaotic when you want to order something and you just have to yell at someone behind the counter. We got turkey sandwiches with cheese. They were both very good once we got them, it wasn't quick. We sat at one of the 3 tables off to the side and ate our food. We also got some cookies. The chocolate chip was my favorite. My husband said the oatmeal raisin were just ok. We wanted some cinnamon rolls but they were all out :( I definitely agree with Holly S about this being a speed trap. As we passed by on the way back to Houston, we saw some people pulled over. So, slow down and stop if you need to, but nothing impressed me here. read more

I like what Tracey said, "beacon in the night". I found it by following the light while driving from Austin at night. However, I didn't like the peach black parking lot. I fear I could accidentally park in the middle of street. Granted. Bathroom was clean and usable. I don't see myself enjoying the deli in Sunday evening. Everything was so hyped like a tourist trap. Commitment is tough, whether it be to a person, a sweater, or a restaurant. Well, don't worry when it comes to Hruska's, they make commitment really ridiculously easy. The first time I came to Hruska's was when my dad and I use to drop my sister off at the University of Texas in Austin. We would trek from Houston to Austin, taking the much beloved (right???) I-35 to 71. Hruska's was the perfect mid-point stop for our 2.5 hour drive. If you don't know anything about Hruska's, all you need to know is that what you've heard is true: they have the most amazing kolaches in the world. In case you're not from the south, kolaches are these delicious foods filled with usually sausage or fruit. Like ying and yang, you have your savory and you have your sweet. Hruska's knocks both of these kolaches out of the park. This time around, I bought 3 savory kolaches (I swear, they were to share...) - sausage, sausage and cheese, and sausage and sauerkraut. There were a plethora of other kolaches to choose from - pan sausage, sausage and jalepeno, and sausage, egg, and cheese just to name a few. I had the sausage kolache and they kindly offered to heat the kolache for me. The bread hugging the kolaches are soft and pillow-like and the sausage is just the right amount of salty, with the most satisfying flavorful taste. I also purchased half a dozen fruit kolaches (I know, it was hard not to grab a dozen) - a cream cheese (amazing), a cherry cream cheese (like a pie filling surrounded by bread), a poppy seed (can we take a moment to appreciate poppy seeds?), two apples (think apple pie), and a blackberry (slightly sweet and slightly tangy!). Everything was amazing. Nothing was overly sweet. Honestly, for me, any dessert that includes bread is a win-win for everyone. There are many other food items to purchase at Hruska's - breakfast burritos, hamburgers, chicken sandwhiches, breakfast sandwhiches, homemade cookies, fresh homemade bread, and the list goes on and on and on. Next time you travel on 71 between Houston and Austin, make sure you do yourself a favor and stop by Hruska's. If not for the food, the bathrooms are usually impeccably clean and the employees are all very welcoming and make you feel right at home. read more

We stopped here for change. We normally go to Weikel's but decided to bypass the tempting baked goods there. Huh??? OK we did succeed. We had kolaches last week. We needed to use the restroom. It was clean and paper products available. We ended up getting burgers too. The service was a bit slow. But the burger was great and the veggies on it crisp and fresh. I would definitely recommend the burger. There is a lot of things tempting you to open your wallet. So many cute gifts and deleicious looking baked goods. I did get chocolate chip cookies. They were pretty good. I wish they had some non-standard cookie specialty. You can get what they offer at many places and make it yourself easily. Nothing to keep you coming back.
