Nice restaurant, very clean, great food and not just a little bit of food. We opted not to get the buffet, maybe next time. Each of our meals was so large it was almost like a buffet at our table. There was a lot of food and it was all great. I ordered the 3 piece fried chicken with fried okra and mashed potatoes. I wish they would have put gravy on the potatoes or at least offered as they were a little bland. Fried okra was flavorful as was the chicken which was most likely brined. The chicken batter was seasoned well. I surely enjoyed my dish. My daughter got the crispy chicken sandwich and my wife ordered the chicken fried steak. Everyone liked their dish, I tasted all the plates and can affirm that the food was good all the way around.

We enjoyed this place! I had the grilled chicken breast and salad bar. The salad bar was fresh and had lots of options. The chicken breast was juicy and big. Great service, great local atmosphere! Husband liked his too and I got a jar of bread and butter pickles to take home.

We stopped for the all-you-can-eat buffet, but we missed it by six minutes. Life goes on. I ordered Chicken Fried Steak, which was okay --nothing special, not bad, but nothing that stood out. I'm not sure if the mashed potatoes were instant or real, but they were okay --loaded. Customer service was excellent. A place to stop by if you're on a long drive. It wasn't bad, and a large menu to choose from.

At least 3-4 times a year we make the trip to Columbus to eat fried chicken at schoebels. I know people like their buffet but ordering the friend chicken off the menu and waiting for them to fry it up fresh for you is worth every minute of the wait. Did I mention they have the best chicken noodle soup too? Double check the soup selection on the day you go as they rotate depending on the day of the week. The restaurant is always clean and the wait staff is friendly. Definitely a winning combination!

We were on a road trip & my mom recommend Schobels because she had dinner there before and liked it. We stopped in on a week night, it was fairly slow. The dinning area felt really dark and the salad buffet was a mess. It was toward the end of the night so maybe they were busy earlier, but I never saw anyone clean up the salad line. When I did go get the salad, the broccoli was bad, it had black spots in it. Everything seemed fine and tasted ok. I got the catfish. It was fishy. It's been a while since I had catfish, so I thought it was just me, but the others agreed. The fried okra was good. My son got the fried chicken and it looked really good. Nicely breaded, crispy not greasy but it was lacking flavor. The chicken itself was juicy. My mom got the etouffée. It was good but a little on the salty side and really saucy. Service was just ok. It felt like it was the end of the night so maybe our waitress was tired, but we went long periods of time without getting refills or being checked on.

We stopped by for a late lunch about this time a year ago. The buffet looked very tempting but we just missed lunch so we were kinda bummed. We ordered burgers instead and they were so good, we made a promise we would stop by again the next time we are in the area to try the buffet. As luck would have it, we missed the buffet again last Sunday. So, we highly recommended burgers for the crew and southern fried chicken with German potatoes for me. What a disappointment! The burgers tasted funny, old, salty and cold. The fried chicken was piping hot but the breading was overcooked. The chicken was tender and moist though. If the breading was not almost burnt, it would have been nice to eat it. The german potatoes were ok. My meal came with a salad(from the buffet) and a dinner roll. The salad was pretty good. I should have just gotten a large salad instead of the chicken. The dinner roll was stale. Oh well. At least we gave them another try. Unfortunately, we won't be coming back.

We ended up in a campground in Columbus for a few days, and our host recommended Schobels. It was a classic dignified establishment that hearkened back to the family restaurants of the '50s and '60s. The menu favors the German cuisine popular in that area of Texas, which was a welcome experience for us. I ordered the sausage plate, while DW opted for the weiner schnitzel. Both orders were tasty and generous. We also partook of their very comprehensive salad bar, sampling the entire variety of veggie goodies that we often don't see offered. After seeing some of their rich classic desserts on display, I nearly defied my doctor... but not this time. A pleasant, adult dining experience.

Arguably one of the greatest foods ever invented. Atleast in my world. How can you go wrong with bread filled with sweet or savory fillings? Hruska's is about halfway between Houston and Austin and a perfect rest stop to fill up on gas, use the clean facilities, grab a snack or indulge in their amazing baked goods. They are steeped in history and have been around for decades passing along the family recipes. It's obviously improved structurally over the years from a country store and looks like a modern gas station now. It's always pretty busy every time I have stopped in, but they are a well oiled machine and keep the masses moving with excellent customer service. They have all your gas station essentials like snacks and beverages. What sets them apart is their bakery. Here, they label their kolaches as the traditional fruit filled variety. I like them, but they are never my first choice. I love the ones with meat inside. Here, they label these as pigs in a blanket. They have a large variety of both. I usually go for a regular sausage and cheese, but over here, they sell a delicious pan sausage kind. On top of all their sweet and savory baked goods, they also sell burgers on the grill. Their burgers have made it to the Texas Monthly Top 50 burger spots. I have yet to try it. Overall, this is an always stop place for me. I highly recommend stopping here to stretch your legs and enjoy a delicious pastry while you're at it. I will definitely be back.

We had a group of 8 adults who had just completed touring 2 of the Painted Churches, in and around Schulenburg. While our tour guide greeted several servers as we entered like old friends, I don't think that was the cause of their friendliness to our group as a whole, I saw them happily greeting everyone and providing excellent service. Our happy server quickly took drink orders, you can tell when a server is confident in her job and knows the routines as she never wrote anything down but when she returned with drinks, the orders were all correct. She then took orders for lunch, we had a variety of offerings from the menu. I decided on the Tzatziki Salad, a nicely presented Greek style salad with grilled chicken breast slices and some tzatziki with pita points. Others around me had the Rueben and the grilled chicken salad and said everything was perfect. I also heard great things about the home made chicken salad and their hamburgers. And if you feel like your garden needs a bit more color, just step into the garden center after lunch and pick out some lovely plants to take home!

I was pleasantly surprised at the absolutely amazing freshness and quality of the food and modern/light atmosphere of this place (a bit unexpected after a few lackluster food experiences in Schulenberg leading up to our lunch here). It was every bit at good as some of the cafes I've eaten in major cities (where there is heavy dining competition). Mom and I both ordered their delicious chicken salad sandwich, piled high (but not too thickly) with shredded chicken on perfectly baked, flaky (but not too flaky) croissant bread. The chicken salad was a perfect blend of seasonings with a few cranberries for a little sweetness. Divine! Each sandwich came with a side of crispy/perfect (seemingly handmade) chips. Our tour guide ordered a gourmet grilled cheese sandwich which she seemed to really enjoy as well, complete with perfectly buttered and crisp grilled sourdough bread. The atmosphere was very modern and new yet warm and dotted with beautiful antique pieces (be sure to check out the old buffet across from the bathroom doors, gorgeous!). And this place seemed packed with many locals in their brunch attire to enjoy the great food and great hospitality of the wait staff. Behind the restaurant, they also host a beautiful nursery where you can browse under the trees through their fairly extensive collection of plants (flowering and non flowering - we saw some variations of native flowering plants we've either never seen before or don't see often so my mom purchased a few for her garden!), chat with the very knowledgeable and friendly owner of the nursery, browse the little nursery gift shop full of unique and beautiful items, and even visit with the sweet "shop" kitties (who seem to like to hang out near the nursery gift shop entrance) if you wish. All in all, a very special experience at this gem in Schulenberg. We will definitely make this our number one stop for meals (and to buy more plants) in Schulenberg when we return!
