My rating is based on my experience with the food here, and my duty to help reset expectations. There's really nothing special to the food. The kolaches are good, but not OH MY GOD good like so many yelpers claim. The burgers are decent, but nothing special. I'd give it a 3 star for having decent food, a friendly staff, and good selection of other food and goods. But since everyone else is giving them 5, a 1 will only do what's right and marginally decrease their rating to where it should be. read more

When we chose to eat near La Grange we thought we'd find a German or Czech restaurant. Found this little food place in a gas station. Kinda disappointed there's nothing authentic. Lots of kolaches to choose from though. Hamburgers, sandwiches. Great place though to stop for a gas station and road trip stop. They're pretty quick have good seating. I don't think I ever had a really good kolache until here. I only have Shipley's and Kolache Factory to compare, and I don't particularly like either. The sweet ones are okay, but I actually really like the sausage (pan or regular) with cheese and jalapeno. I haven't had anything else, but I think from now on, this will be a regular stop. read more

Buyer beware! On my trip home from Houston I stopped to pick up 2 packages of ""mixed kolaches" to bring home to the wife and kids. As we were excited to break into our special dessert, we unexpectedly found all 12 kolaches to be PRUNE. While my bowels may not be perfect, I would have purchased 12 prune kolaches if I desired such a movement. What a disappointment. When the package was labeled mixed I, took it as such. Fool me once shame on me...next time I will pass Hruska's by and travel the 14 extra miles to Weikel's. read more

My go to stop between Austin and Houston. A huge variety of snacks and drinks. A deli and a bakery. It just feels right in this place.

Whenever I make the trek between Houston and Austin, I make sure to plan my pitstop at Hruska's. They HUGE selection of drinks and snacks as well as the most random souvenirs you can find. The kolaches here are awesome as well, especially the ones with the pan sausage. Just make sure you get there early because they usually sell out by the end of the day. Lastly, I can't stress enough about the super clean bathrooms here. These bathrooms are the holy grail of gas station bathrooms (electronic everything) and will make you wonder why you have put up with the standard disgusting gas station bathrooms your whole life. read more

Every now and then, one can still find in America a small shop untainted by corporate greed which produces a bundle of goods that has a strong regional following. Hurska's bakery, providing some of the best sausage kolaches in the State (I agree with a previous poster that the best is Czech Stop Grocery & Deli in West, TX) at dirt cheap prices, is one of those places. Its a Chevron gas station as well so you do not expect the aroma of freshly baked goods to wake you up as you walk in! The best kolaches in Texas. Whatever you heard about Czech stop, forget it. Situated just east of Weikels in La Grange, if you're heading east don't get off of the highway to get them there. Just a little further you'll see Hruska's as a gas station but man oh man, I got there around lunch time Wednesday and this place was PACKED. Lots of burgers being served but it was still breakfast time for me so I opted for a smoked sausage, a pan sausage and cheese and a strawberry cream cheese kolache. These and a starbucks double shot out of the cooler was under $7. They were all really good but the texture of the pan sausage one kinda grossed me out a little. Not a very large eating area but whatever. This is THE place to get kolaches. read more

A solid and familiar pitstop between Houston and Austin on 71. If you've never been, definitely try and make a stop here at least once. Their grill is alright - nothing amazing there. What you need to try, however, are their baked goods. Kolaches, pigs-in-blankets, rolls, cookies. Try their chocolate chip skrumptions - a whole hunk of fudge in the middle. During my drives to West Texas I try and make Hruska's a lunch stop on my route. I've only had the hamburgers here, however they are fantastic! Made fresh to order however you want. They have an entire bakery located on the premise though I have not had anything else from here. Not much more really to say other than give it a shot. read more

Great kolaches. Great Burgers. They also have some of Prasek's sausage there, so you don't have to drive all the way to El Campo. It's always a great stop if you're driving from Houston to Austin on Hwy 71. It's about ten miles from Columbus off I-10. Just get there early for kolaches. They're normally sold out by early afternoon Also the parking can be rough at times and if 71 is busy, it's a chore to get in and out of this place. . read more

We've driven past this place so many times. It wasn't until this past Tday week that we finally got some Kolaches. They are so freakin awesome. I loved the sausage, not pan sausage but regular sausage with cheese. The bread is perfect, the sausage taste like real (and are) snauasages.... Such a relief to get some real homemade kolaches with real ingredients. I also tried the cream cheese and cc with cherry. Both were a-ma-zing!! We both downed a kolache each within 1 minute of getting them in the car. Then went back in and got some more. That good. Get them, you'll be happy. :D read more

We came in when they were about to close so they didn't have too much selection left. I got a sausage and cheese kolache and the breakfast burrito. Both were excellent. The kolache had a good portion of meat and cheese and not too bready like many other kolache places. The breakfast burrito although you could tell had been sitting out awhile was also very good. We took home a package of sliced peppered summer sausage. It tasted a little gamy and went bad after about 3 days in our refrigerator. So disappointed with this place. Based on the reviews I expected way better. We tried a little bit of everything except for the hamburgers. I forgot what they are called....stuffed kolaches maybe? We had ham, cheese and jalapeño, sausage and cheese, pan sausage and cheese, and pan sausage and sauerkraut. We also had a cinnamon roll, a lemon kolache and pecan chocolate cookies. So yeah, we tried a few different things. All edible but none fantastic. Cinnamon roll was really dry. As far as the service goes, the people working there are friendly and quick. Best place to stop between Austin and Houston. Their delicious kolaches make an awesome breakfast, and the collection of home decor is a great opportunity to stretch your legs. Great place to stop on your drive between Houston and Austin. Fresh and delicious kolaches - in particular I like the sausage and cheese as well as cream cheese kolaches! We drive from Houston to LaGrange on average about once a month and always look forward to stopping for kolaches. This past Easter weekend we stopped and while the expansion looks great, I hope the increased business doesn't mean an end to the best kolaches in Texas. I will say that for the first time the kolaches were not fresh and I'm betting because they probably now have to make more than ever before and therefore probably make a lot the night before. I will try again in hopes that it was a one time deal. We tried some sandwiches for the first time and we were not impressed at all; turkey sandwiches made on crappy bread at a fairly high price. Stick to kolaches only I would say. Again, let's hope they can manage the growth without losing the quality that they had before. I hope to rate higher on my next visit. read more

My new favorite stop between Austin and Houston. Love love the selection of pastries. I've tried about 5 different kolaches now (savory and sweet) and all were delicious. Last time I got one of those enormous cinnamon rolls. YUM. Bathrooms are clean, there's about every beverage you could ever want in the refrigerator cases, plus plenty of other snacks. Great kolaches and one of the best burgers I have ever eaten

Not as massive as Buckee's but they have a bakery that has a focus on kolaches and we picked up some yummy apple ones and what they call a cheese ball which is a cream cheese kolache that is closed and looks like a circular roll. We also tried the meat kolaches. We had jalapeno and cheese, pork sausage link which was delicious and pan sausage with cheese (breakfast sausage). Yummy!! read more

Sometimes I think I come to TX just to drive from Houston to Austin so I can stop and get as many kolaches that will fit in a white bag. As if Pan sausage, jalapeno and Cheese isn't already a winning option, throw in their slamming kolache dough and we have a winning combination people. I LOVE HRUSKA's! I drive past this place all the time and never thought this place would have the bestBEST kolaches. I'm not a Texas native so I'm not a kolache connoisseur, but I am very impressed with the baked goods at this place. I've also had their macaroons and they're very impressive (not Kosher for Passover). You should try their cream cheese chocolate kolache--tastes like a mixture of fluffy clouds in creamy heaven. read more

This place has become a regular pit stop on our fairly common road trips to Austin from Houston. There is plenty of kitschy stuff to look at while you stretch your legs, and I've become a fan of their jarred/canned items, as well as their various chocolate covered nuts and awesome chocolate covered espresso beans that never quite seem to make it through the whole trip! Their kolache selection is extensive and pretty good overall. I like their pan sausage kolaches, especially the sweet wheat bread that they're wrapped in.
