This isn't the same place it once was. I've been coming to Howard Motors since 1995, that's right, 30 years. They won't do any of the more difficult, time-consuming repair work they once did. If you tell them what you need, half the time they'll send me someplace else, usually Eagle Eye. I haven't seen Jeffrey Ammons at the front desk in at least 4 years. He was the son of the original Howard and took pride in his shop. Did he sell the business to these new guys? I know nothing stays the same, but it's kind of sad when your favorite auto mechanic sinks to a lower level. read more

There doesn't seem to be a need for me to say much more than has already been said by others. I admitted to Josh that I had tried to save some money by letting an amateur do a job that claimed he knew how to do. Let's just say he didn't. And Josh didn't take the opportunity to make me feel bad about it. I thought that was really cool. I previously admitted the same thing to "another place" across the street. That unnamed National Brand intended to take complete advantage of my situation and insisted on doing WAY more work than needed. When I pressed on getting done only what I knew needed to be done, plus just a little of what they convinced me was necessary, they refused. They wanted the WHOLE nut. To the tune of $2,700!! That's not including all the OTHER BS they wanted to pad my bill with like cabin air filter, trans fluid change, BG Platinum Fuel Service etc. I got the hard-sell treatment. Josh confirmed that JUST the work I knew was neglected by the amateur was all that was required. Besides getting my car up and running in very short order, I was treated with fair and honest pricing. I was even talked out of the small amount of work the "other" National Brand convinced me of! In what world does an auto tech decline easy money from unnecessary work? As a new resident, I've figured out what so many others know already. Apparently, we have one right here in Williamsburg Va. That's how I've become a loyal Howard Motor Co. customer. The door on my Sienna got jammed such that I couldn't open or close it. For reasons I won't bother detailing, this was a big problem for me, and I needed to get it resolved quickly. We had gotten good service at Howard's Motor before, so I tried there before heading to the Toyota dealership. Within five minutes (or less) of my arrival, the owner had come out to my car and gotten the door open and operating properly. I know they had a full shop and a parking lot full of cars awaiting service, but they helped this old lady swiftly and ably. Called on Tuesday. "We won't be able to look at it until Thursday or Friday." Call on Friday - Hey I'm bringing it in today "We don't have any slots open until Tuesday or Wednesday next week. Told them I called earlier that week. "Okay we'll get you in on Monday." Very end of the day Monday, he tells me there's nothing he can do. I know the problem is a tranny solenoid. I had a recurring break pad problem and a state inspection for my vehicle. The gentleman up front stayed after hours to meet me, as I was running behind. Upon checkout, I thought he was joking when he said "$20." He admitted they did a poor job on my break pads last visit, so they corrected it for free and only charged me for the state inspection! Have to tell you, reviews don't always give you the straight scoop but must say Howard's deserves the 5 Star Reviews from my personal experience. We are down visiting Williamsburg for several months and I needed a front riding light replaced. After reading reviews on Yelp I decided to call them and see if (a) they worked on Acura's and (b) if they could look at my MDX. Joss said bring it by anytime and he would take a look at it. Did just that and he immediately did so right Away. Right in The parking lot. Took him about 10 minutes. Bingo problem fixed. Joss and company were unbelievably personable and extremely fair priced. The same job at an Acura dealer would have cost me at a minimum 1+ hour of time and 10 X's what Joss charged me ($10.00)! Needless to say highly recommend them. Ask for Joss! read more

I was recently told by another mechanic place that my tire had a puncture in the sidewall and that it would cost me $256 to replace the whole tire. I was skeptical and thought I would get a second opinion. Turns out all I had was a nail on in my tire that Howard's truthfully told me about and fixed for $30. This place was recommended to me by some co-workers after the Goodyear in Williamsburg gave me a huge estimate on replacing struts, the belt, and several fluid flushes. I was told they were honest people who would tell you if you could get something done cheaper somewhere else. The Howard mechanic said the struts were fine and the fluids conditions were fine. He did agree I should replace the belt, and suggested to change the spark plugs and the cabin air filter (two things Goodyear didn't catch). All in all, I spent about $350, instead of the $2,300 I was going to have to pay at Goodyear. Plus you actually talk to the person who's working on your car. I HIGHLY recommend these guys! I was really impressed. I visited my folks for Thanksgiving, but had a slow leak in one of my tires. Called Wednesday before I left, made appointment for Friday. Tire was fixed and installed for a great price. But what I was really impressed with, I asked them if they could do something else, and they said nope not our specialty. Why a big deal? I've been coming here for almost two decades. I can't say a single negative thing about this shop. They are friendly and most importantly they are honest and competent. They do not play games with you. The price they quote is the price you pay. On one occasion they did find something unexpected -- a cracked front axle, which explained a strange sound I was hearing from the front end. This may have been a life saver. If it had given way at interstate speeds who knows what might have happened? I guess the only complaint one could make is that you often have to drop your car off and wait a day or so to get it back. But I think that's a fair trade-off for excellent work. read more
