First of all, there was nobody there shopping on a beautiful day. There were two young girls at the registers with their face planted in their phones and did not acknowledge me. There were a lot of shelves with no merchandise. I did buy two small plants and I asked if she had a bag and she proceeded to hand me the bag. I told her I was the customer and that she was the employee and she needed to bag it for me. I will never shop there ever again. there was no one there to ask questions. Customer service is obsolete. I arrived there today to just get 2 bags of compost, the third time I have gotten some here. I went to the register(s), where there were 2 people on their phones, and asked for two bags, and pointed to where the bags were, that I bought 2 times before, and needed some help because the bags are 40# each. I got nothing but shrugs and blank stares, from both people, because compost was not on their standard QR list. They said they didn't have any, although I pointed to exactly where the bags were stacked. I gave up, got a wagon, went out and manhandled the two bags myself....If you have a language issue, that's YOUR problem, not mine, in this country. I went to the Houston Garden Center excited to get my first garden started. I had my list of questions together along with the plants, trees, and herbs I was interested in purchasing. Unfortunately, the staff was not knowledgeable of any plants to assist. This caught me by surprise, so I asked the lady if there is a certain day I should come back to speak with a specialist or manager who is familiar with the items they carry in store. Surprisingly I was told that no one os familiar with what they carry and wouldn't be of assistance. I appreciated her honesty, but am completely shocked that a garden store doesn't have anyone employed for even one shift a week that can speak to the items they carry. They truly need to work on training and educating their staff on the inventory they carry at the store. If not the entire staff, at least have one person per shift that can speak to customers and naturally gain sales for your store as the result of this. Such a huge disappointment.... read more

I purchased a Xmas tree from here. They suggested their bowl attached to stand attached to tree. I got it got home and it was leaking all over. Took back and asked to get a credit on it for another stand. They refused and put another of the same on the tree. Since they put so many staples / nails in tree it pretty much died in the first week, don't even think the bowl allowed tree to get water. They have a no refunds or exchange policy for a reason, they sell bad stuff and don't stand behind it. Will never shop there again. If could put negative stars I would. read more

They do have a large variety of outdoor plants and lots of indoor plants, and a never ending supply of Boston ferns. Staff I did speak with did speak English, despite what the other reviews said. We weren't offered help or anything but we also didn't need any. It was relatively stroller friendly. Pricing is spot on with other nurseries. The indoor plants they have were kind of in bad shape but the outdoor plants/trees looked excellent. I do think the other reviews were harsh and it lived up to my expectations. :) thanks! read more

Great selection - not sure how they will last as I just left there and haven't planted yet. However, I have a poor taste about the ethics of this place since I was charged 12.50 for a "taxable item". I asked the gentleman checking me out about my total and he said it was tax... so basically I was charged 12.50 for tax and then paid tax on that. Edit: 2 weeks in and all but 1 plant is dead. When I looked up the particular plant online to determine the cause, turns out the "full sun" labeled plants are actually plants that should be planted in the shade. The 1 thriving is the one I was fearful would die since it is in the shade...I figured going to a place that specializes in plants would help take the guess work out of which plants I need for particular areas... not this place. read more

Just a warning! We decided to splurge on an expensive tree this year knowing we would be hosting both of our families Christmas celebrations. Plus this is our first year in our new home, so we wanted it to be perfect!! Two weeks after purchasing this from #houstongardencenters it started dying. I've had multiple people tell me that they thought I was exaggerating about how bad it truly was until I took a picture of how it looks now. We bought it the weekend after thanksgiving and we've kept it watered. I went today to plead with the company to help me out. The 'manager', Paul, wouldn't even look me in the eye or listen to my story. He gave me a number to corporate, which is closed until Wednesday. When I told him that, he literally told me I was "f*ucked". Classy. He refused to give me a new tree. I wasn't asking for a refund or anything like that, just a replacement before Christmas. Instead I had to go buy a new one because of the fire hazard that's currently sitting in my living room. KHOU 11 News did a story on this situation a few days ago, but it clearly wasn't enough to help this company with their customer service or compassion at Christmas. Obviously the fire hazard is the worst part, but the money spent and look on my boys faces isn't exactly a joy either.... Be careful when considering this company for any needs, Christmas or otherwise. read more

If you know what you want come here. But do not expect to get any help. The people there don't really care about helping. I'm sure it has to do with not making enough. The manager is not very helpful if you have questions. But to give her credit I think it's because she just doesn't know about plants. Not sure if it's that or she's just not very friendly. But overall if you know what you need to get it's a good place to come. Just don't expect help or smiles. The sign right in front of plants says 70% off tagged price and you get to register and it is only 50% and they try to tell you that is for plants on ground. There are no plants on the ground. Last Christmas tree I will buy from this place. After we got home, We noticed that HGC has painted the lower 4/5th of our tree green. The top 18" was much browner bottom. Now the tree is dry and losing needles much more than previous years. Just saw news report on Channel 13 where HGC blames heat on in the house is the issue. What a joke!! read more

If I could rate this a half star, I would! Worst customer service ever!!! I purchased over $600 in flowers on Saturday. I told them I had a coupon at home( $100 off). They told me to bring it back. Well, I took the coupon back and receipt back on Monday as I couldn't get back same day. They were extremely rude and told me there wasn't anything they could do. I told them I'd return flowers, re-purchase, and use coupon. They laughed and said NO RETURNS! I asked to speak to manager who gave me a phone number to "corporate ". What a joke! I think it was her number. She was rude and and when I told her I'd never return, she said okay! Googled HGC corporate office, called number, only to find recording, no longer in service. Unbelievably rotten customer service. I purchased 4 large pots for plants there. I went to exchange two because The color I purchased didn't work with my house exterior. They didn't have two matching pots in the color I needed so I tried to return the pots. Apparently they have a NO return policy which is stated in fine print on your receipt AFTER you have made your purchase and also on an 8.5 x 11 sign posted about 30 feet high. In talking with the store manager, he was very rude and actually was laughing, I am assuming at me since it was during our conversation, as he had side conversations with the cashier in Spanish. Went to buy a Christmas Tree and brought 3 families and bought 4 trees. We cut 2 inches off all the bottoms and immediately put them in water at home. All are drinking but one and it is quickly dying!!! Corporate office DOES NOT CARE!!!! I bought ($100) a Christmas tree from this location on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. It was given a fresh cut and in water within 10 minutes. The tree never drank water and two weeks later it was literally crispy and a huge fire hazard. I took the tree down, returned to the store and was told there was nothing they could do. They said a lot of people's trees were dead but the owners are greedy and weren't refunding or giving replacement trees. What kind of company operates like that? It's Christmas, people don't have money to just throw away on replacing a tree. Houston Garden Centers has an "F" rating with the BBB. "F"!!! I'd be interested in knowing how many others this has happened to this year, there may be enough for a class action suit. At least get us all refunds. read more

Nope. I've been living in the area for years, and I've visited the Spring location a few times. Today was my last. Beautiful sunny spring afternoon. Perfect weather. This location has really a great variety of indoor and outdoor plants. I spent about an hour picking out some plants and a pot. This is where the problems start. I walk up to the young black woman cashier with my cart. She doesn't acknowledge me but stands there playing with her phone for about 45 seconds. Then she puts it down, and doesn't say hello or anything and starts ringing up my purchases. I ask can I get a coupon for anything or a discount, and she says we're not allowed to give coupons at the cash register. She was totally uninterested or uninvolved with anything. She looked bored and stupid, didn't want to talk or help anyone. So the order came to about $200 and I paid. Soon as I put my wallet in my back pocket, she picked up her phone and started playing with it. Didn't say thank you or anything. I don't need this shitty customer service. Lots of other places have just a great selection or better with great customer service. I ask for the manager and so this older Mexican man walks up to me, eating crackers and just stares at me. I ask are you the manager, he responds si. I ask do you speak English and he responds in broken English, lil bit. Puts another couple crackers in his mouth and starts to chew them with his mouth open. Disgusted, I ask for all my money back. He doesn't really care or ask why. All of them act completely indifferent. Ok yeah so I just bought $175 of merchandise, then because of their shitty attitudes and poor customer service, I immediately requested a refund. I give him the receipt and he walks over to the cashier who is still playing with her phone. No one seems to care or be smiling or be concerned or anything. I've been using Houston Garden Center now for about five years, I've spent thousands of dollars with them both personally and as a contractor . I've sent numerous customers, friends and family because I appreciate their plant selection and there's a couple of people that are very knowledgeable there. However today was a different experience. I've been in the customer service industry for about 10 years, customer service is very important to me. Today I shopped around for about an hour and a half , and in that hour and a half I ask a lot of questions even pointed to my ad / coupon book to multiple employees including the cashier. When I checked out I got distracted and didn't hand the cashier my coupon even though it was in my hand. After loading up and getting halfway down Rayford, I turned around and went back because I realized I forgot to give them my $50 off a purchase of $275 or more coupon, I had spent $300. Getting back, the cashier Virginia, refused to issue the refund and proceeded to call a manager over, the manager Chris also refused to issue the $50 refund even though I had just spent $300 15 minutes ago and they had both seen the coupon before I left, they told me that it was company policy. Being in the customer service industry that's definitely not how you win customers for life. At that point I went out to the truck and proceeded to call the corporate line, a very unprofessional snobby lady answered the phone and had no concern over the issue. She proceeded tell me it's the owners policy we can't do that sorry, bye. Unfortunately after five years and thousands of dollars, Houston Garden Center has lost my business for good. As a general contractor myself I'm in the business of earning future customers not just present customers because the future customers are the ones that will carry my business. I really hope that the owner of Houston Garden Center can get the memo and get a handle on the horrible customer service that seems to spread throughout the corporation. read more
