He has basically destroyed my confidence in my home. I am currently in the process of gathering estimates to correct 10s of thousands of dollars of poor workmanship that does not follow accepted trade practices. Had a window consultant, a licenced glazing and general building contractor out to look at the windows. Result? All windows need pulled out, framing fixed, and reinstalled correctly. SJB also installed a window in my son's bedroom that violates fire egress code. The window only opens 18". Minimum is 20". So I need a new window there now. I have told Steve about the windows. He is ignoring me. Steve's only response to my concerns was to ask for more money, for me to sign a gag order so that I cannot review him, and to exempt him from any liability. Not. a. chance. I have attached pictures of Steve's attempt to ask me for more money and to relinquish all of my rights. Is this why I have posted the first bad review? Have others signed their rights away to make Steve go away? Not me. Steve claims I am grading "unfinished work". Tile, floors, and windows are straightened out later at the end of project? Right. So he was going to pull baseboards off and pull the planks out of the drywall? Then put the baseboards back on? He was going to magically correct the tile work? He was going to correct the window framing with the windows completely installed and all finishes complete? Makes sense. If you are reading this and had SJB do any work at your home in the past, I HIGHLY recommend inspecting the work. Also - often he said he is doing work for "free" or "part of the project". Be careful.

I called Steve the second day I had a house leak to patch up drywall and renovate the upstair bathrooms. Steve showed up the about ten days because he was busy with his schedule and water mitigation was just finished. I asked Steve to give me two separate estimates; first for the bathroom with the leak, needed the pave new tiles, dry wall and the downstair ceiling drywall. Second, for the other bathroom I wanted to renovate. I explained that first bathroom will be covered by insurance and secondary will be paid by me. He noted. I waited approximately about a week for the quote, no response. So I called multiple times and texted him for 3 days. He said he was busy and he is working on the estimate. Finally he got the estimate, and it was done incorrectly because all the items and labor costs weren't itemized as I requested. Also, he added the second bathroom into the estimate which i also requested not to add all together. I told Steve that you need to revise this estimate, because insurance co. isnt accepting this form. Another week went by, and i havent received anything. All the sudden, Steve texted me if i have decided to use another contractor, i replied not yet, and I'm waiting on the estimate still. He forwarded me the revised estimate about a day later with second bathroom in the estimate. At the point, I've just given up. Basically, he left me hanging, and I have no master bathroom to use and giant hole in the ceiling. If I would have used another contractor, this would have been completed by today. Obiviously Steve couldnt follow simple instruction. I wouldnt trust my house in his hands either. If you like to wait for one response everyday 4 days, use Steve. Your remodeling will be done in about 6 months.

One of the things that impressed me most was their ability to complete the project on budget. In fact, throughout the project they actively helped us save money by finding more cost-effective products and solutions without sacrificing the quality or overall look of the project. That's something I really appreciated as an owner and developer. Communication was also excellent. We had bi-weekly meetings throughout construction to review the project timeline, discuss progress, and work through any issues or questions that came up. Their entire team was responsive, respectful, and always willing to take the time to answer my questions. Most importantly, the craftsmanship and quality of the finished project were outstanding. Building an 11-unit project has plenty of moving parts and challenges, and CalHomeCo did a great job managing the process and delivering a finished product that we're extremely happy with. I would highly recommend CalHomeCo to anyone looking for a contractor for an ADU project. Great guys, a great team, and an excellent experience overall.

They sold us a contract on 2/7/22 for asbestos in the walls but the test wasn't performed until 2/10/22 and there was none!! They refused to give us the results until we met in person. Arie brought his brother Jason even though we never met him. They were very assertive and argumentive about bringing the price down even though the work they sold us was based on a lie. We originally called them because there was water leaking in our basement in a couple of areas and also some mold growing in one of the corners. Without even diagnosing where the water was actually coming from they sold us an expensive job that was supposed to fix the leak. Partway through this job the company also took samples for asbestos and then came to our house on 2/7/22 and told us the test showed there was asbestos in the walls and floor. They then proceeded to upsell us on additional work that more than doubled the price well into the 6 figure range. We later learned they lied to us because the test wasn't even performed until 2/10/22 and there was no asbestos in the walls! They sold us a complete remodel by fraudulently misrepresenting the facts and they did so knowingly, I have the paperwork to prove it. As far as the work that was performed, almost all of it was done incorrectly the first time and needed to be corrected. They basically try to get away with doing the minimum until you complain. We STILL have a leak in the basement. After not fixing it the 1st time they had the nerve to come back and try to sell us more work - a french drain with a sump pump. Why couldn't they have actually taken the time to diagnose where the water was coming from before they tore up our entire yard with an excavator and installed an expensive drainage system outside? Also when they were working on our patio area they left nails everywhere, beware if you have kids or pets. And finally, they charge WAY too much for everything. The 1st bid looked alright but the change order they sold us was ridiculous and I never should have signed it on the spot. But like I said, they do everything to gain your trust including preaching to you from their religion. When I actually started Googling the work they had sold us it was astronomically high. And the last thing I want to share is just almost laughable. The night they came back to sell us the additional work that more than doubled the price and was based on lies and misrepresentation of facts, the sales guy actually bought us dinner afterward. So I guess you could say that if they do decide to screw you over they at least buy you dinner afterward. 2026 Update: Every single thing we paid them to fix has FAILED. We had to hire another company to come out and fix EVERYTHING we did but Sonny Builders has fled the market and gone back to CA. Still the same company, the paperwork they gave us points to the same website. But as far as the work they did, it was like they were doing work they had seen someone do before but didn't actually understand how the systems actually were supposed to work. Everything failed and we had to pay all overagain to get things actually fixed. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!

We had a very ambitious project plan, including a full gutting and remodel of the kitchen and dining room space and a full gutting and remodel of the front half of our upstairs. The kitchen came first, and took around 3 months due to some unexpected issues that arose from the original construction of our 50 year old home, and a stone cutting subcontractor that botched his end of the job and then ghosted the company. Golden Shore Design and Build immediately promised to handle a full correction of the issues that subcontractor caused at their expense, and then proceeded to follow through on the promise. Once the kitchen was nearly finished, it was time for the upstairs. We gutted the non-structural walls in the front half of the house upstairs, and proceeded to put together a beautiful master bathroom / bedroom suite. That job took around 3 months as well, and ended up finishing a bit ahead of the original timeframe. I won't say there were not small issues that came up throughout the process, but that is really to be expected. We are doing major construction on a 50 year old home, and living in the home the entire time. When there were imperfections that needed fixing, Alex and Petra took care of them. When there were unexpected problems that arose due to the age of the home, they gave us honest and reasonable change order quotes, and options to not break the bank. The work that Alex, Petra and their entire team of people did really brought our dream design to life, and we are thrilled with the end results! We are even planning on having them back to do a guest bathroom that we originally left out of the scope.
