This was our first time in Tulum. It can be quite an expensive holiday if you want to be on the main drag- a very expensive strip of hotels and rental villas - unless you prefer something less expensive in the town or camping. We were lucky to find Hotel Zulum had a vacancy. We were delighted to find two double swinging beds in our room upon check in. That's right, swinging beds. We rocked ourselves to sleep every night. The beds were fitted with mosquito netting which was more fashionable then functional - we didn't have any mosquito issues during our stay. The hotel with a small pool is directly on the water at under $200 a night for a room that could accommodate up to four. Zulum is midway between all of the best of Tulum; shopping and restaurants on either side and a cenote (swimming hole) is a five-minute walk. Adriana and Elena at the front desk are very helpful and will make your stay enjoyable - just ask for suggestions.
A lovely continual breakfast is included in the price of your room. Fresh fruit, delicious homemade bread and jam and a choice of fresh pressed fruit juice or coffee served in their quaint restaurant overlooking the beautiful sea. Service is super friendly, polite and helpful but not cloying as in Cancun. Look out for Jasmine, one of the truly wonderful waitresses! She will always have a smile on her face and will try to accommodate your every request! The restaurant is a great spot to hang in the evening for a bite or a drink and to look at the stars. The sky gets black and the stars shine like diamonds. We were lucky enough to see some shooting stars! And the bar/restaurant has a slide down to the beach!
This great little, well maintained hotel is terrific for singles, couples and/or families. It is smoke friendly place ; ) gay friendly, eco-friendly and pet friendly - it's just plain FRIENDLY. In the week I was there I heard English, Spanish, Italian, French and Hebrew spoken and everyone was lovely. The owner has several charming pups which make appearances from time to Time AND a pet donkey. Sancho is kind of the unofficial mascot. He even has his own Instagram account SanchoTheDonkey. He is a delight to see when he passes by and incredibly smart if you are lucky enough to engage with him. (Insider's tip - he loves carrots and apples). There is also a small outdoor two-person Massage area. I had an hour massage for $50 and had a lovely and relaxing time hearing the waves crash. Ask for Tino. This is a fun place. Our one-night stay turned into an amazing week at Zulum!
The hotel has WiFi, the staff will be happy to give directions and arrange shuttle service to the airport. They also have the most wonderful bathroom amenities - all natural soaps, shampoo and conditioners that smell good enough to eat! read more
