Hubby and I stayed here this weekend and we had a wonderful time! We were greeted with a smile as soon as we walked in which was nice. we were also informed they were starting to offer breakfast at the bar in the front lobby (Sunday was only their 3rd day) and that we should let them know how we enjoyed it. I was so impressed with the breakfast! Not only was it delicious, but the service was great! We over heard the woman behind the bar say she was little ovewhelmed because they were new to offering breakfast and had been there all morning, so we were even more impressed that she was a great host. We also had dinner at the restaurant downstairs and it was yummy as well. Not too pricey either which was nice, we only paid $50 for 2 entrees and hubby had 1 beer. The room was also impressive. For being such a small hotel, I thought the rooms would be teeny. But our room was nice and we had a corner room so nice and quiet. I think the only negative was around midnight, it was a lil loud I believe from the Cellar bar starting to close up and all the drunks were headed home. This wasn't the hotel's fault though and it only lasted maybe a half hour. Long story short, I would love to visit this lovely hotel and this lovely city very very soon! read more

Pretty disappointing. Advertised as charming, our room was not particularly and it was one of the more expensive rooms in the hotel. Heat didn't work, blew only cold air. Room was never made up even though we were gone all day. Of the three different reception people only one was enthusiastic. Noise from another room woke us at 7:00 on Sunday morning, so much for sleeping in. read more

Here's our story: Every year we come to town to enjoy the cellar door wine festival. This year decided we would finish out our evening at the hotel sitters restaurant with a good meal. Unfortunately we paid $$$$ for a really good meal and got a below average expericence. Service is supposed to be with a smile, not an attitude. Then when our food showed up a $31.00 dollar med- rare steak was well well done and our other friends chicken was pink in the middle. When we asked to have a steak as requested, we waited and waited. Finally all six of us get our food and it's bland, uneventful, and nothing special. So the $206.00 dollar check arrives and the bill is paid. When she brings back the check she's says oh and we gave you a discount for the steak. My bill was $209 now. How does that discount work? ?Spoke to the waitress and the manager; was told they already ran the card so they can't fix it blew me off , offered me a free drink to drown out our horrible experience (so mad we said no) and then went on screwing over more peoples night, I'm sure. In summary: Poor customer service from a Hokey restaurant charging high dollar prices for mediocre food. We love good food and good wine and don't have a problem paying for both; except when people like these take advantage of people like us. Hope this helps. read more

This place has such great potential, but service is horrible. Management clearly doesn't care to fix. Bar service is beyond HORRIBLE. Every time we have come in, no one greets us, bar staff just stands and talks and won't come to the table to take a drink or food order. Every time, I had to walk up to the bar to order, get my drink, AND ask for the tab. No one acknowledges anyone leaving. With 6 years of management this is not acceptable. Fire the bar staff and get mgt to handle ASAP. read more

Booked a room or our 35th anniversary on 5/13/2015. The room and bath were both very small. We dropped off our stuff and walked around the town. We found that the Italian restaurant across the street had a better reputation for dinner. We ate there and it was excellent! Ran into some friends, had some drinks in the Hotel bar (actually quite nice) and got back to our room at 11pm. We found that the toilet was inoperative. I'm mechanical but this unit was definitely "DOA". Had to use the public restroom in the hallway. Upon checking out the next morning, the clerk "thanked" me for letting her know about the toilet. No sympathy for the inconvenience, no offer of a "breakfast on us" or a discount coupon for our next visit--which by the way will not occur. Good luck! read more

We came out to Hotel Sutter from the Bay Area on the evening they unveiled their new full-service bar "The Cellar" (previously known as the Annex under the previous owners). The new owners are, piece by piece, room by room, restoring this lovely historical treasure, peeling back the decades of bad decorative decisions, to reveal its original beauty--caring for it, polishing it, and protecting it. They are bringing in charming ornamental elements to accompany the rustic backdrop of history (comfy designer chairs and settees set against the newly revealed brick walls of The Cellar, for example). The menu is new and under the direction of a professional chef that they brought over from the Bay Area. Drink and dinner menu items they are offering are innovative and exciting. While the food was quite lovely, we did have to wait a long time for it to arrive. Growing pains of an operation in transition, I assume. We will be back and we are extremely excited to see this treasure fully realized under the stewardship of the new owners! read more

I hosted a baby shower at Hotel Sutter and it went really well, i would definitely use this venue again. Rebecca the coordinator was amazing to work with and the staff was also amazing to work with and provided a lot of help when it came to setting up and providing anything that I needed. It is a beautiful venue, definitely recommend. read more

How do I start? Went here with a party of 8 for a birthday with a reservation at 5:30 that part went smooth was seated promptly. Ordered our food with salads 20 minutes after being seated and served wine.we then waited an hour and saw other people being served bread and salads before asking where ours was, finding out that they had mixed the tags up and put us behind the mistake was corrected and bread and salad was brought out to us. When our food came an hour and thirty minutes after being seated they had forgot a plate and mistaken a kids Mac n cheese for a regular truffle Mac n cheese so they had to go back and make those two and our guests waited while we ate. Upon bringing out the two mistaken plates 15 minutes later there was no apologizes or any offers to refund our deduct the mistake or any attempt to make it better. In fact after getting the check they had charged us for the mistake and an additional kids make n cheese. After dinner We ordered an additional bottles of wine after the 2 we already had with dinner and were talking and enjoying ourselves and celebrating a birthday when the front manager/seating lady came to our table and had asked if we were waiting for desert we told her no just finishing our drinks and at that point started clearing the table aggressively and making it a point that we were taking too long. Mind you that when given our check which was well over $400 wasn't offered dessert or an option to order just a bill. Ten minutes later she had came back and rudely said that if we wernt going to order dessert or anything else that we should take our wine and finish it at the bar because she had a party of 12 waiting. At that point we were furious and left without finishing our wine. Food was exceptional the wait staff was garbage. the people with the exception of the front end manager were nice just poorly trained and non attentive to guest needs. Was warned about this place by a friend who had bad service as well but decided to try for ourselves and sadly we agree that the overall experience was horrible and would never in a million years recommend!! read more

Just spent two nights in Folsom at the Courtyard Marriott. Horrible beds and the front desk confirmed that many patrons repeated my complaint. So I went to Hotel Sutter which is a beautifully restored Hotel in Sutter Creek. Nice big room. On the same floor as the outside balcony in front. Couldn't leave our curtains open to enjoy the outside view as we had locals playing cards outside our window. Saw these same people drinking on the streets over by Pizza Plus. They drink water while playing cards. This is a serious problem as they intrude on guest too. On with the room review. The bed was worse than the beds at Marriotts. It was like sleeping on a hillside and neither of us got any sleep. Bed needs to be replaced. It was the King Deluxe room. If you can't have a good nights sleep it's not worth staying there. read more

We just spent a wonderful, relaxing weekend at Hotel Sutter. We booked last minute and couldn't believe our luck at finding such a charming, romantic place. The outdoor balcony with views of the historic town is a great place to spend the afternoon with a beer and appetizers. Dinner in the restaurant was amazing. Loved the corn and squash soup. We had the mushroom ravioli with brown sage butter and the miso pan seared halibut, both were delicious. But, the dish that actually made us laugh out load because it was so good was the fried Brussels sprouts, who knew they could be so good! Service was really friendly and like other people have said, they do try really hard. We had a late dinner and were Jennie's last table of the night, there was no rush and we got top rate service. The cellar bar is really cool, great band, fun vibe. Everyone made us feel at home, whatever we wanted they provided. Very reasonable prices. We will be back. read more

Tuesday night is Trivia Night at 6 p.m. in The Cellar bar. If you're hungry you can order from the full menu down there, too.. About that menu: I like the variety and the food quality is superb but selfishly, as a local, I wish they'd change it up occasionally. That said, the burgers, the naan with chicken & basil, the meat and cheese plate, and (mmmm mmmm good) the macaroni and cheese, and the brownie with ice cream are A++++ super duper. read more

My husband and I and another couple attend the Sutter Creek wine walk every year. This year the hotel was under new ownership. We wanted to watch the games on Sunday. Saturday the bartender in the Cellar told us they would be open and serving the bar menu. Her shift would end at 7pm but they would still be open. On Sunday we went to eat lunch and watch NFL (that they advertise heavily for on their banners) and the Cellar sign said not open till 6:30 pm. We ate lunch in the hotel. Servers very stressed out. I brought the issue of the Cellar and the NFL games up to the hostess. She was very rude and condescending. She told me that we were misinformed. She treated me like I was an idiot. When we where leaving she laughed at us. We made sure to be in town to go to their place. Such a disappointment. Needless to say we won't be back until improvements are made or under another ownership. We should have gone to J&D's steakhouse. They actually had everything that the hotel claimed to have. Unfortunately they are closing their doors on new years day. read more

My wife and I visited for dinner on Sunday Dec 21. The facility is beautiful and the staff friendly. We did, however, have issues with our meals. My wife ordered the braised pork ragu pasta dish and I order the chicken pot pie that is all the rage. About 10 minutes after we placed the order , our server informed us the pork ragu had been removed from the menu, much to my wife's disappointment. The Chef's special that night was a beef stoganoff that came "highly recommended" by our server, so she ordered that, While we waited on our meals, we did enjoy a very good bread basket. After another 15 minutes our meals arrived and we dove in. My pot pie was very nearly but not quite burned on one side, fortunately I kinda like that and the wonderful puff pastry crust was yummy. The filling was tasty, but it would more aptly named potato/carrot pot pie as there very little chicken. My side salad was also over dressed and a bit soggy. The stroganoff had a good flavor as well, but the quality of the beef lacked. Very, very tough and chewy. So we ended up swapping meals as I am more willing to suffer lower quality meat than she. Not the best showing for an establishment trying to secure itself as one of the better dining places in the county. read more

We rented out almost every room in this hotel for a wedding weekend at the beginning of October and had the best time here! Our daughter was getting married on a Sunday in Ione at the Heirloom Inn, so we all stayed here for the weekend, including the entire wedding party and family members for the bride and groom. It's a beautiful hotel and we were able to use the second floor balcony to meet up with everyone, plus on Friday and Saturday night, we partied down in The Cellar nightclub. Other wedding guests were staying down at the Days Inn but came down to Hotel Sutter to eat in the restaurant and visit. It was a fabulous weekend, but went by too fast with all the wedding preparations! We plan to come back to stay again and have a little more time to enjoy this super cute town! read more

I honestly want this place to be good! I have given it way too many chances, about 20, and I'd say 90% have been completely disappointing. The service is the number one problem. It takes on average about 10 minutes after getting sat to be addressed or greeted by a worker, it takes around 30 minutes to get your drink once ordered, and once your food arrives you are thoroughly disappointed. I once got raw, literally rare, chicken on my ceasar salad and the waitress asked if I wanted a new one once I pointed it out. No apology. Back in February I took my mom for lunch on a weekday. There were only two other diners in the restaurant with us. We both ordered salads and waited 45 minutes for them to be brought to us. While waiting for them our server tried to give us free French fries to eat while we waited for our salads... why not just bring the damn salads??? About a month ago, I sat through an entire dinner listening to the table behind me complaining about their meal the whole time and telling the waiter to no avail. The cancelled their drinks after waiting until after their dinner arrived. This building is awesome, location awesome, balcony awesome... but they have a lot of work to do to find employees and management that make this place worth your while. When reading this review, take into account that I have tried almost everything on this menu and have still come to this conclusion. read more

We came back to the Hotel Sutter on July 7th after a long hiatus to try lunch. Over the past two years the food and service have swung from good to poor. However, we were very pleased on our recent visit. Although the young woman greeting us at the door seemed to lack energy and a desire to be there, our waiter Michael was outstanding. He was very polite and efficient and made sure we were having a pleasant experience. In the past we would wait 15 minutes or more for our drink order to arrive, but things were different this time - drinks arrived in two minutes. The meal was very good. My wife had the salmon sandwich and I had the fish and chips - a healthy and very tasty portion. But the star of the day was Michael. We hope he sticks around - he is a gem. read more

Always a fine meal in growing Sutter Creek! But in the 6 times we've been here the bar service to the tables is always slow. Food service is also slow which is exacerbated by the slow bar service. Wait staff on the other hand are superb! Definitely a return nonetheless. read more

Respecting the historic architecture new owners have transformed this 1859 hotel into a happening destination for visitors and locals alike. DECOR TOTALLY ROCKS: Dining room has original wood floors and weathered brick walls, enter the bar from the hotel lobby through ceiling mounted sliding barn doors, floor to ceiling, wall to wall accordion windows open the bar and separate dining room onto front sidewalk offering unique inside, al fresco dining. Rooms very pleasant, beds divine. DINING: Chef offers unique menu/ only fresh food is served/ amazing wine list. Make reservations or wait your turn. On a Saturday afternoon in February people were actually lined up waiting to get in. Sign up for "Friends of the Sutter" a private invitation list to hip happenings at the hotel. We enjoyed a fun/educational, by invitation only, four course dinner paired with six wines from a local winery for only $65.00 including tax and gratuity. Lucky us, the evening was sold out w/ a waiting list of Hotel Sutter friends. read more

The place looked nice and seemed to have a decent menu. However, I can't comment on the quality of the food or drinks. We were seated almost immediately. We then waited 15 minutes, before we flagged someone down, asked for water and told them we were ready to order. After another 15 minutes (and after only being served the water we asked for) we left without even ordering any food or drinks. read more

We've had very nice dinners there in the past & thought we'd stay overnight at the hotel. Seemed like a nice quite hotel. My mistake was not to view the yelps regarding the hotel rooms. The one they gave us was small, clean and cute. We didn't need much. The bed was small which is fine. Also, the walls were thin so we could hear people talking downstairs in the restaurant area. We were right over the Bar area and facing the street, which at the time seemed nice. But the people noise and the music didn't stop until around 1am. Called the operator and they couldn't do anything until after 2am. Very frustrating. The bathroom smelled like pigeon crap ( mainly because there are pigeons that hang out right outside the window and make noise all through the day/night). But the bathroom was updated and the shower was nice. We mentioned that to the maid and she said this was normal & tried to spray the room to help with the smell; but it didn't work. When we checked out, the person checking us out knew about the problems with this room; but offered no solution. Not sure how the other rooms were; but due to the noise & the attitude of the operator, we will not stay here again. They offered us a discount; but have not seen it yet. The issue was not the price; but the room noise & smell. read more

My Husband and I booked a room for 2 nights to celebrate my Birthday. Check in is at 4:00 pm and we arrived at 6:00 pm. The room had not been cleaned yet. When I asked about how long until the room would be ready the receptionist told me to go have dinner and drinks and then it should be ready. After driving for 2 hours to Sutter hotel I wanted to get dressed and ready for our night out. Not go out in my sweat shirt and jeans. When the room was ready I was so disappointed. It was dirty, the ice bucket was molded, the toilet was running, and the carpet was stained. The bedding had no mattress pad under the sheets, the sheets kept pulling up on the corners, and we couldn't use the the restroom as the toilet wouldn't flush. The continental breakfast had the same apple turnovers for 2 days and cereal with no milk. The kitchen has no closing door so you can see all of the kitchen as you walk to the elevator. The kitchen on Sunday night was left by the employees with food all over the counter and floors. No one cleaned the kitchen before leaving. We chose not to eat at the on site restaurant. I certainly do not want to eat out of a kitchen that is kept in such utter filth! When I asked the receptionist about having the restroom fixed it was almost hostile and very uncomfortable. This was a horrible experience and certainly was a total let down for my birthday getaway. We will never book this hotel again. The only thing that would make me happy at this point is a full refund! read more

Where to begin..... Cant wait to plan another trip to the Hotel Sutter. My husband and I arrived Saturday morning for a wedding. Although we were early in the day ( 11 am) they allowed us into our room to get situated. The rooms are darling and the charm is unmatched. The beds are so incredibly comfortable with quality bedding and personal touches throughout. Fresh flowers in the hall were so beautiful. The rooms are also exceptionally clean. As the day went on and rain continued to pour on what was supposed to be an outdoor wedding, the manager of Hotel Sutter graciously went above and beyond offering the hotels gorgeous banquet room to accommodate the wedding reception at a moments notice. Incredible customer service. Once the wedding was over, the group came back to the Hotel and were able to enjoy the rest of the night celebrating at the Awesome bar downstairs ( The Cellar). Great Bartender! Killer DJ- Zane rocked it, even giving a few of us dance lessons out on the floor! We shut the place down and it was great to be right there and just walk right up to our rooms. It didn't end there. The hotel staff was so friendly and very accommodating and helpful the entire time. The late night Hotel Front Desk Clerk was super funny and kept a great eye on things making sure we were all safe and having fun. In the morning we were allowed a little late checkout as we were pretty tired from the previous night's festivities. We were ready for a big breakfast and the restaurant did not disappoint! Oh My Sweet Lord, the cheeseburger with bacon and avocado was insane! Delicious, fresh, and with great service. Ice Cold Beer and the football game on at the bar if you wanted to sit there, or a more quiet, relaxing Sunday brunch on the other side of the hotel in the formal restaurant. Hotel Sutter truly has something for everyone. In a fantastic location close to all the little shops and great staff make this place a true treasure. Cant wait to return for a weekend away. read more

We had a wonderful experience eating at the Hotel Sutter on May 1. The food was very good and the server Shelbie Rae was very friendly and attentive. Terrible stay at this hotel. We booked the king deluxe room and was told by front desk it was one of their most popular rooms but I have no idea why. There is a public balcony right outside the room full of loud drunk people. We were told the balcony would close at 8 pm but there were people out there past 10 pm. Not only is it extremely loud due to the balcony but you can also hear every car that passes by on the street below. In addition the people on the balcony can see right into your room unless you pull down all the shades. The mattress in the room needs to be replaced as well...got the worst sleep of my life because it felt like I was rolling down a hill all night. Also was rudely told by hostess at restaurant that they could not seat us for dinner because they are not the type of restaurant that takes walk-ins only reservations. When we told her we were guest at the hotel she said she would see what she could do...like we were such an inconvenience. I can definitely say this is my first and last visit to this hotel. read more
