It took some time for me to gather up my thoughts to be able to write an accurate review of this hotel. Before you make a reservation you need to ask yourself "am I looking for a place to sleep and shower right by the beautiful bay or am I looking for a luxurious hotel experience?" if it's the latter then this hotel is definitely not for you. I originally booked this hotel for two nights but ended up departing after one night due to the noise level of other guests. I don't think they were particularly loud however due to how the rooms are designed (they are designed more like a hostel, the rooms are literally so close to one another because they tried to fit in as many rooms as they possibly could in such an enclosed space) It was impossible to get a good night's rest. As someone who is very sleep sensitive it's imperative that I get my good hours of sleep in to properly function throughout the day. Robin who works in the front however is very warm and welcoming and will take the time to properly explain how to best utilize your room and the location of the hotel. She will also let you know the best place to park so that you do not end up getting a ticket, the hotel gets a pass from the city to park there for a fee, the fee depends on how busy It is. If I could write a review just based on my interactions with Robin - I would give this place 5 stars but the hotel itself and the room just did not live up to an ideal stay. read more

The front desk lady was very kind, and even gave us a room with a better view as well as a late checkout. This hotel is definitely old, but it has so much character! Arrived around 3pm to a locked door with a sign posted instructing us to call a number for help, in order to check in. It was about a 10 minute wait after we called the number on the door, which caused us an inconvenience since we had somewhere we needed to be. Parking was a pain during the day, the whole area overflowing with tourists. But the views of the city over the water were amazing. It was stuffy in the room, the AC never reaching a cool enough temperature to maintain a level of comfort, especially during a heat wave, probably low on freon... not fun. No screens on the windows, so that didn't help. But I loved the beautiful furnishings and that they offered unlimited free bottled water and a fridge to keep drinks cold. It's undoubtedly a lovely hotel with lots of character. Historical building, charming architecture and decor, quirky artwork on the walls of the lobby, hallways, and rooms, a shared outdoor patio on the second floor right outside our room. But I care about comfort and conveniences more than looks, and the value wasn't quite there, so I can't give more than 3 stars. read more

OMG--this was such a disappointing stay. The room was so tiny I could barely walk around the bed. The pillows smelled unpleasant, like drool. The bathroom door wouldn't even open halfway, and the shower head adjuster was broken. There was absolutely no space for luggage. The "view" was just rooftops from neighboring buildings, and there were no hotel staff available at all. Overall, an awful experience. Definitely not recommended. read more

Everything about this place was peaceful, I felt like I added value to my life just having this 2 day experience!!! Refreshing, organized, and just amazing to all the senses. Staff named Robin, very impatient, easily frustrated with things asked of her. This staff member embarrassed my wife and I in front of other customers waiting to check in. Honestly, it was an amazing experience until we needed to speak to Ms. Robin. I will never stay here again because of how rude she was. 700$ for room and parking and my wife's bday, should not have to experience her meanness. My husband and I recently booked a two-day getaway at a beautiful location in Sausalito for my bday. The day before our check-in, we called to confirm the possibility of an early check-in. A gentleman we spoke with mentioned that if we arrived between 12:00 and 1:00 PM, there might be a room available. We arrived slightly before noon, only to find the hotel doors locked, with a note instructing us to call a number for assistance. After calling, the gentleman arrived, informed us that the room would be ready by 1:00 PM, and informed us ta staff member named Robin, would assist with our check-in. When we returned a little after 1:00 PM, Robin, who appeared to be on her lunch break (even tho her shift started at 1pm), seemed irritated by our arrival. She informed us that check-in was not until 3:00 PM, despite our earlier conversation with the gentleman. Although we apologized for interrupting her meal, she remained short with us. However, she later apologized for her behavior when we encountered her again. Unfortunately, the issues did not end there. While we were unpacking, Robin banging on our door, informing us that she had mistakenly given us the wrong room and asked us to move. After explaining that we had just unpacked, she allowed us to stay. Later that evening, we ran into her again, and she abruptly demanded a credit card on file, which confused us as we had already paid for the room and parking. We went downstairs to clarify, but during the conversation, she interrupted us to assist another group checking in early, asking us to leave and handing us a sticky note instead of a proper receipt. About thirty minutes later, Robin banged on our door again, this time refusing to speak with me and asking directly for my husband. She requested the sticky note back and finally provided a receipt. At that point, we were disheartened and were debating on staying the second night. Although the location was stunning and we thoroughly enjoyed Sausalito, the customer service at the hotel was disappointing. We had invested over $700 in our stay, and the poor service could have ruined our entire trip had we let it. I typically refrain from complaining, but I strongly advise against staying at this hotel to avoid a similar experience. read more

I was extremely disappointed to learn that this hotel does not allow service dogs on their property. I understand a no pet policy if it's not a service animal. I called to double check their policy and was sadly turned away. In fact, the man over the phone wasn't even 100% sure if they allowed it but simply stated "probably not" allowed. I have a severe allergy that requires the retrieval of an epi-pen in the event of an emergency, and my dog has been trained to do so. None of this needed to be disclosed, per ADA requirements. In fact, I implore management to review the ADA requirements, which state: "Under the ADA, State and local governments, businesses, and nonprofit organizations that serve the public generally must allow service animals to accompany people with disabilities in all areas of the facility where the public is allowed to go." - https://www.ada.gov/resources/service-animals-2010-requirements/#where-service-animals-are-allowed What a shame to be rejected simply because I require my dog to be with me at all times. If you have read some of my previous reviews, you have probably gathered how much I love working from home. One of the biggest benefits is being able to work from any location using either a Wi-Fi connection, or my iPhone's handy hotspot feature. After watching a YouTube video on a hidden little hotspot called Sausalito (30 minutes from San Francisco), we decided to visit. Ironically, my wife had a hotel credit to spare from hotels.com, so she booked us a room at Hotel Sausalito. Located in the heart of Sausalito, we pulled up to the loading area in front of the hotel and proceeded to check in. We were warmly greeted by a gentleman that not only checked us in (we also paid the $20 daily parking fee), but booked us dinner reservations at one of his personal favorite restaurants. After checking in, we proceeded up to our room. If you're looking for a modern hotel with fancy amenities, this is not for you. However, if you're looking for a comfortable, boutique hotel that is in close proximity to the best that the city has to offer (I will be posting reviews for the establishments that we visited), I highly recommend this hotel. Although the room was fairly small (I definitely don't recommend more than two people to a room), it had everything that we needed. The room was clean, bed was comfortable, we had clean towels, the shower had hot and cold water (I have learned that this is not an expectation for some hotels), and there was a coffeemaker in the room. My wife and I enjoyed our stay in the hotel and in Sausalito in general. Whenever we decide to return (more than likely to do some Vodka tasting), we will book our stay at the Hotel Sausalito....and you should consider doing the same! read more

Also there was a raunchy smell coming from the shower drain everytime the shower water was turned on, just gross. There are many other places in town better to stay. Cute little boutique hotel. There are not a lot of options if you want to stay in the main downtown area of Sausalito. I tend to like modern hotels, but that didn't seem to be an option, and this place was clean and comfortable with nice shower products. And you really cannot be the location. The hotel is conveniently located downtown close to the ferry landing. My room was noisy but it is an older building, so it is what it is. I noticed a $20 charge on my credit card and called the hotel - they had charged me for parking when I took a ferry to the hotel. The guy at the front desk who took my call did not apologize for their error and said their records showed otherwise and he made it sound like he was waiving a parking fee as a favor. This left a bad taste in my mouth. The other weird thing that happened - I received 2 voicemails from Chase Ultimate Travel when I was sleeping in the hotel's bed with the hotel asking if I was still checking in that day. I called the hotel's front desk and informed them that they had already checked me in. I'm not sure what that was about. read more

This hotel gets two stars for the location and the free bottled water. The pluses end there. The A/C didn't work in our room, and of course there's nothing to be done with nobody on-site. We opened the windows to get the room to cool off, but if you're there on a Thursday, LOUD garbage trucks come by at 5;00am. It's just an older hotel that hasn't been updated: dirty carpet, rickety bed, skimpy shower head, etc. For the price, def could not recommend. read more

Location was in a prime spot! Accessible to coffee, food, and shopping. The room was small but it's an old hotel so I was t surprised if the sq ft. However, you can hear everything from people next to you, the ac unit, water from people showering next door.... I don't think it was worth the price. Hotel Sausalito has become my go-to hotel when visiting Sausalito. The location of the hotel is absolutely perfect with water views from some rooms. My favorite part of staying at Hotel Sausalito is falling asleep to the fountain in the courtyard across the street. Guest get a card which also gives them a free coffee and pastry from the awesome cafe downstairs. Couple this with free newspapers and it's easy to imagine a nice relaxing morning on the water. There are plenty of benches across the street from the hotel that our you right on the water with jaw-dropping views of San Francisco, Angel Island, Alcatraz, etc. One of the other highlights of Hotel Sausalito is the staff. Everyone who works there clearly cares about making sure guests have a great experience. Special thank you to Matthew who has gone above and beyond multiple times! A stones throw from the hotel you'll find some of the best restaurants in town like Copita which is my personal favorite. (They have a lobster ceviche that is INCREDIBLE) One little touch that I really like is that the hotel leaves water bottles out for the guests along with apples and oranges. Given that most hotels charge $5+ for water in rooms, here you get as many bottles as you want! Sidenote: Don't expect to be watching TV on a big screen. This hotel has tiny TVs that are shockingly small when you first see them. Just remember, you're in peaceful Sausalito, grab a book from the library and take it easy. One last bonus that's too cool not to mention. They have a little library with some books that are easy to pick up and dive into. So, that's a pretty long way of saying, this hotel rocks and if you're coming to Sausalito you won't regret staying here. Pro tip: ask for a room facing the water. read more

My spouse and I stayed for two nights here as a holiday getaway. The room was comfortable; our main problem was that the shower didn't work (the pipes made a loud sputtering sound and the water temperature varied from cold to scalding). There was no one at the front desk in the morning and they provide a number to call. The person at the other end of that number was extremely rude, told us that he would get in touch with someone else but did not provide any information about how long that would take. Ultimately, someone else (Matthew) called us to learn more about the problem and then arrived within 15 minutes. He was unable to address any of the issues with the shower and we were moved to another room. The other room was fine although the central heater did not work very well; we ended up using the provided space heater. As a courtesy for the inconvenience, they reversed the charges for parking ($40). The location is terrific, and we appreciate Matthew helping us out. But it is tricky when there isn't staff at the front desk, and when those who pick up the number to call address hotel guests rudely and is unhelpful. read more

My girlfriend and I called this hotel looking for a room that had a bathtub since all the pictures shower rooms that only had showers. After confirming with the clerk over the phone which particular room had a bathtub we booked that specific room. This was roughly two weeks in advance. When we checked in we were not given the room we reserved and the clerk that was present said it wasn't mentioned in our reservation notes. We booked the King bed with Park View which was clearly stated as room 209. We we given room 208 as someone was already checked into room 209. When I told the clerk about this error, we were told that all of the rooms are nice but that didn't solve the issue. Everything else about the hotel was wonderful. read more

We took the ferry over from San Francisco for an overnighter in Sausalito before a party planned for later in the day. It was just an unlax get-away to the more laidback ambience this little coastal enclave offers ... no big plans or places to go. Because we didn't have a car the idea of staying close to the ferry landing was attractive. And frankly there just aren't a lot of hotel options in Sausalito. After considering the rest I ran across Hotel Sausalito last and was pleasantly surprised how affordable it is. I recognize it's not everyone's cup of tea. If you like fancy chain hotels with a concierge, health spa, 60" TV, etc. this isn't the place for you and I hope you won't waste everyone's time by staying here anyway and then complaining. It seems the biggest negative "some" people have is that the ferry is right outside the window and people walk by to get to it. DUH! No, the line doesn't stretch all the way to the hotel and the ferry is far enough away that it's not noisy. The hotel is just far enough so you can see when they're boarding and casually walk over to get on the boat when it's time. The hotel mostly faces a beautiful green park with large mature trees. Because most of the windows are bay windows the view in one direction is a sliver of the main street but the noise level is very low. The other direction (and the rooms are set up to take advantage of this) is toward the bay and the ferry landing. Photos of my room that I posted on social media had friends commenting that it looks like I won the lotto. The bathroom is large, clean and beautifully decorated with hand-laid tile and an exquisite stained glass window. All of the rooms facing the park have an oversize California King bed that is amazingly comfortable. The rooms facing the main street are about the same size with two separate twin beds. There is a rooftop patio but it was closed for renovation when we were there. The rooms have a Keurig coffee maker and are well stocked with supplies and bathroom items. There is only one staff person working the front desk at any given time and the lady who checked us in was happy, friendly, helpful and funny. The lobby is small and you get to the rooms (all on the second floor) via an old staircase. They have dozens of bottles of drinking water free for the taking as well as ice machines. I stayed the night before at a major chain hotel that posted a rack rate of $1900 a night where I wasn't given any free water! At any time of day or night the hotel was reasonably quiet (we left the windows open the whole time). The only disturbance was the workers arriving in the morning to work on the roof garden but that's not an everyday occurrence. If you plan to stay: the most important thing for you to know is that the Hotel Sausalito is in a 100+ year old building. If you prefer a brand new Motel 6 you may not like historic buildings and may want to look elsewhere. The hotel is fully updated, renovated and modernized and is NOT dirty, smelly or uncomfortable. It's historic! Either you like that or not but don't book here if you don't. Our room, considering it was the height of tourist season and I didn't book far in advance, was exceptionally reasonably priced. What's "reasonable" will vary from person to person but I've paid a lot more for a lot less and rarely have I been at a place this nice for what I paid. A nice little touch is that they include a couple of comp tickets to have coffee and a pastry at the next-door Café Tutti (reviewed separately). That just adds to the pleasant laid-back experience of beginning a new day. Highly recommended! read more

We were in Sausalito for just a night and needed a room last minute. The guy helping us was very professional and did everything he could to get us a nice room. The rooms here are kind of old compared to other places in the area. We also noticed one of our towels was kind of dirty. It wasn't a huge issue as there were extra ones, but it was a bit disappointing given the pandemic. Overall, it was an okay place. read more

Hotel has gone way downhill. Used to be clean and well run, but this last stay our room had dirty cups and towels in it when we checked in. Maids gave us dirty, folded towels when they did their daily cleaning. Even though we've been coming here for years, I don't think we'll be staying here again. read more

Stayed one night at Hotel Sausalito. This hotel is so beautiful and our room was spotless clean. The bathroom was the most beautiful hotel bathroom I've ever had. All linens and towels were clean. The innkeepers were very nice and helpful and even upgraded our room to a bigger room with ocean view. Perfect location right in the heart of downtown and right next to the parking lot. Walking distance to all the shops and restaurants.We paid $20 to park for 24 hours( regular price is $40). Our room also had a full size tv. Unfortunately my only complaints are that for the price, they do not offer any kind of breakfast and there is no mini fridge or microwave which wasn't a huge deal for one night stay but could be difficult for multiple nights. Also check in is by appointment and they couldn't check us in until 30 minutes past regular check in time. Overall it was a great experience and would stay again. read more

This is an excellent hotel. I won't call it a boutique hotel as some may as it is very luxurious, very quaint and comfortable at the same time. Everyone that works there is super nice. The customer service is beyond excellent and very personalized. This is something that you don't get from corporate chains. I would stay here again, and again. We had the good fortune of staying here when my daughter, son-in-law and granddaughters lived in Sausalito right down the street from here on Bridgeway. Absolutely beautiful, little shops where you can walk around and get some delicious ice cream and have a good meal, along with a stunning view. I can't say enough nice things about this hotel, the shower, the bathroom, the linens, the bed everything was comfortable and it was very quiet and relaxing while we were in the room. Everything throughout Sausalito is a walkable distance, and this hotel is in the center of it all. You won't regret staying here. I recently had to travel from the east coast last minute because my Dad fell and broke 3 ribs. He lives in Sausalito and is almost 98. Needless to say, I was worried about exposing him to possible covid and given his age, the less people in his house except for his caregiver and him, the safer. So I called up and was able to book a room here, less than a 3 minute drive to my Dad's house. Matthew called to make sure when I would be arriving so he could meet me at the hotel lobby since I would be checking in after 11pm. He also upgraded my room for free, even before he knew the reason I was staying at the hotel! Wow, that was awesome! The room was so clean and exactly what I needed. The bed was so comfortable and the bathroom was very spacious. I had a great view of the ferry and the fountain in the park. The room had a Keurig coffeemaker and all the housekeeping and other employees wore masks at all times. Once when I accidentally left my hotel key in the room, Dimitri was there in a flash to let me back in. I can't say enough nice things about this boutique hotel. I never thought in all the years visiting my Dad in Sausalito that I would be staying in a hotel. But if I ever did have to stay in one again, this would be the place! Hotel Sausalito served as our first destination for our 10th anniversary trip. Their website is quite nice and the hotel is billed as a "bed and breakfast." Well, upon talking to the folks at the hotel, I learned this isn't quite true. You definitely get the bed (um duh, it's a hotel stupid!) and the breakfast - well that is kind of dodgey. There is a cafe next door that you are given vouchers for a 'pastry and coffee' in the morning. What you get is Grade A, Costco quality muffins and croissants with the finest thermos pump coffe you'll find in Marin. Considering that Hotel Sausalito is NOT cheap, and they do tease with the B&B angle, you should get a lot more than this. The Wifer and I enjoyed a 'park view' room. The park view afforded us a wonderful view of hoards of European tourists fresh off the boat - the Blue and Gold boat from Pier 39, that is. Every two hours or so, there was this massive influx and exodus of people with euro-accents flooding the quaint little park that served as the crown jewel of a crown made of $1000k minimum purchase boutiques. For an extra $10/night, you get to park in the gated municipal lot across the street from the hotel. Again, for over $200/night, why the fuck isn't this free? Is it that there is some kind of price threshold where there is a tacet understanding that you will be gouged for the most mundane of details and you will like it? Well, I don't give Hotel Sausalito two stars because the room was nice, had remote control AC, and at least we could ferry to the city if we wanted (though it would take some Muni-ing to get away from the tourist traps). read more

This is a charming old style hotel that is well maintained. It is very conveniently close to the ferries. The town itself is charming, safe and quiet. A good alternative to staying in San Francisco. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The rooms are clean and offer A/C. If you want a room with a view you probably have to pay for it. Our room overlooked a maze of rooftops and air conditioner units. The bathroom was both modern and old style. Not much going on at the hotel other then a nice place to sleep. There is a nice rooftop sitting area that is outside of the hotel for fresh air and the courtesy bottle water and pastries were appreciated. The parking fee of $15 a day was a bit disappointing. Very nice hotel. Spend the extra cash for the corner suite just above main street on the strip. It's a little bigger with a nice view of the bay. In the morning grab a coffee and complimentary coffee and bagel and read the paper as the little city wakes up. It's a charming city with lots of shops. We had a great run along the ocean in the morning and made love the rest of the day. ;) I'll be back. read more

The Sausalito Hotel is a wonderful location to spend some time. The staff is friendly, helpful, and welcoming. They have a number of great rooms that overlook the park and their largest suite can be reserved ahead of time. The room prices are affordable and appropriately priced for a "tourist getaway" location. Many shops and resturaunts are within walking distance. And there are many not-so-obvious shopping areas near by too, if you'd like to avoid tourist crowds. Visit Caledonia Street for a real treat! Currently it is a nice setting, away from the "main" Bridgeway Street and has a theater if you'd like to take in a movie. The hotel rooms are comfortable and nicely appointed. Having stayed here many times, over the past 15 years, I can say the hotel is very well maintained. Always romantic and fun, the staff is a true gem here. They are always quick to help with suggestions for dining and shopping, not to mention the occasional bit of local news and background. Great place to go for walks in the hills. And keep an eye out for those bicyclists. A favorite spot if you'd like to cycle (bring or rent). Not far from the hotel are several bicycle shops too. Lots to do in this small tourist location. And Hotel Sausalito is the perfect hotel to stay and enjoy them all! read more

Great value! We stayed in a room w/ a king bed (room 209) and it was perfect. We could see a bit of the bay and ferry terminal and some of the shopping street. Can't beat the location of being in the heart of Sausalito. Granted we were here in March, the area was mellow and quiet. (The ferry doesn't run til 11:30 a.m on the weekends.) Bed was comfy and linen was super clean. Great customer service when I called to book and when we got there. Parking was easy - sight across the street and there's loading zone in front of the hotel. It's an older property, and walls can be thin and floor a bit creaky, but there's just 16 rooms there's not a lot of people walking around. Lastly, you get coupons for free coffee and pastries at the Cafe Tutti right downstairs! Will be back! read more

They have absolutely no business charging what they do. Old "charming" building is actually extremely rundown overpriced dump. Paint peeling, MOLD growing all over the bathroom, toilet paper holder falls off. The olny thing smaller than the rooms are the TV's (tiny) my laptop screen is bigger. I feel that if you want to charge $2,800 for 9 days, it's time for an update/remodel...Or at least MAINTAIN and repair the substandard conditions! Staff is nice, and that's the olny positive feedback I can give. The building smells like mold, there is no refrigerator, a small ice machine that was always out of ice. No microwave, Parking is ridiculous, and the line for the ferry is right in front of the hotel so there will be hundreds of tourists outside all day long. If you want to spend that much money on a hotel, go to a chain and get your money's worth. read more
