    Shared hotel patio
    Annabelle R.

Arrived around 3pm to a locked door with a sign posted instructing us to call a number for help, in order to check in. It was about a 10 minute wait after we called the number on the door, which caused us an inconvenience since we had somewhere we needed to be. Parking was a pain during the day, the whole area overflowing with tourists. But the views of the city over the water were amazing. It was stuffy in the room, the AC never reaching a cool enough temperature to maintain a level of comfort, especially during a heat wave, probably low on freon... not fun. No screens on the windows, so that didn't help. But I loved the beautiful furnishings and that they offered unlimited free bottled water and a fridge to keep drinks cold. It's undoubtedly a lovely hotel with lots of character. Historical building, charming architecture and decor, quirky artwork on the walls of the lobby, hallways, and rooms, a shared outdoor patio on the second floor right outside our room. But I care about comfort and conveniences more than looks, and the value wasn't quite there, so I can't give more than 3 stars.

We decided to spend this years anniversary in Sausalito. The woman that runs the hotel was super nice and very knowledgeable about everything Sausalito. The room had great views, comfortable accommodations and a great location for shopping and restaurants. It's right by the ferry dock, so if you want to go to San Francisco, easy peasy.

Hotel Sausalito has become my go-to hotel when visiting Sausalito. The location of the hotel is absolutely perfect with water views from some rooms. My favorite part of staying at Hotel Sausalito is falling asleep to the fountain in the courtyard across the street. Guest get a card which also gives them a free coffee and pastry from the awesome cafe downstairs. Couple this with free newspapers and it's easy to imagine a nice relaxing morning on the water. There are plenty of benches across the street from the hotel that our you right on the water with jaw-dropping views of San Francisco, Angel Island, Alcatraz, etc. One of the other highlights of Hotel Sausalito is the staff. Everyone who works there clearly cares about making sure guests have a great experience. Special thank you to Matthew who has gone above and beyond multiple times! A stones throw from the hotel you'll find some of the best restaurants in town like Copita which is my personal favorite. (They have a lobster ceviche that is INCREDIBLE) One little touch that I really like is that the hotel leaves water bottles out for the guests along with apples and oranges. Given that most hotels charge $5+ for water in rooms, here you get as many bottles as you want! Sidenote: Don't expect to be watching TV on a big screen. This hotel has tiny TVs that are shockingly small when you first see them. Just remember, you're in peaceful Sausalito, grab a book from the library and take it easy. One last bonus that's too cool not to mention. They have a little library with some books that are easy to pick up and dive into. So, that's a pretty long way of saying, this hotel rocks and if you're coming to Sausalito you won't regret staying here. Pro tip: ask for a room facing the water.

We come to Sausalito at least once a year and always stay at the Inn Above Tide. It's located on the waterfront and each room has the perfect view of the ocean, looking out towards the city of San Francisco and the San Francisco Bay Bridge. All the rooms have their own private deck where you can relax with a glass of wine or champagne and take in the beautiful views of the city of San Francisco. All the shops and restaurants on Bridgeway St. are within walking distance of the Inn. It is also right next to the Ferry where you can purchase tickets for a ride into San Francisco. When you arrive, you are greeted at the gate of their private parking lot, where your car is safely stored during your stay. Check-in is always easy and all the staff are extremely accommodating and friendly. They offer a Continental breakfast that is served buffet-style in their Drawing Room or you can have your breakfast delivered to your room for a $5 fee. Every evening from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. they have wine, cheeses, crackers, and fresh fruit for all guests in their Drawing Room. You can also arrange to have this delivered to your room as well. When we arrived to our suite, they had a lovely anniversary surprise waiting for us inside. They had a silver tray on our table, with a white rose, a bottle of champagne, a box of Napa Valley chocolates, and a lovely card to welcome us. When we booked our stay, for this trip, we chose the City Lights Suite. The inside of the suite is beautiful, luxurious, immaculate, and very spacious. The bed was very comfortable. I have an allergy to feathers. They made sure our pillows and bedding did not contain any down feathers. They had fresh, gorgeous orchids in the main part of the suite as well as the en suite bathroom. If you want to watch a movie, they have a huge catalog of DVDs, you can pick from, to watch in your room. They really go above and beyond to make your stay an unforgettable experience. That's why we always come back. I want to especially thank all the staff for making us feel welcome and making our stay extra special.

The view from our suite was beautiful, but that was the only part of our stay that felt worthy of the "best room" category. Service throughout the entire town was disappointing, and the hotel was no exception. Staff consistently seemed irritated by even simple requests and frequently hung up on us when we called the front desk. There is no microwave, no room service, and our suite required climbing roughly 70 steps each time we went up or down. Valet drivers operated recklessly, and retrieving our luggage required multiple calls before we finally asked for our keys and handled it ourselves. When they brought our car around, my partner was so concerned by the way they drove it that she photographed her rims. Dining in town was equally frustrating. Servers rushed us, were not attentive, and didn't offer dessert -- we had to ask several times. We're the type of people who enjoy long, relaxed meals with multiple courses, drinks, and dessert, but everything felt hurried and dismissive. DoorDash drivers didn't want to deliver to the hotel, and when they did, the food arrived cold. Overall, the amenities were lacking, the service was rude, and the entire experience made us feel like an inconvenience. For the price of one of the top suites, we expected at least decent hospitality. This is not a place we would return to, nor did it offer the relaxing experience we were hoping for. Ally & Penny

I asked the agent if there was another room above mine and was told no. I was also told the room was very quiet. These were both lies. The room was promoted and booked as a cottage, and that implies several things, starting with an understanding that it's a small free-standing building with a modicum of privacy. That was not the case. Our "cottage" was in-fact a ground-floor unit in a fourplex, with people upstairs and artificial turf in front. We shared patio space with our neighbor. He was cleaning his feet as we arrived and immediately asked if he could borrow our outdoor furniture as he was planning to entertain family, which he later did. But the biggest problem--other than the lies at the time of the booking--was upstairs. There was a toddler who spent hours doing wind sprints up and down the uncarpeted floor, and soundproofing was minimal. So, between the garden party next door and Junior Jetrod overhead, we did not have a restful late afternoon and early evening. After 9 pm or so, things quieted down enough to eventually fall asleep. Hotel staff did its best to make things better, and I was permitted to cancel a second night without penalty. But we never should have been there in the first place. The complimentary breakfast was okay, but I wish there had been more variety and additional options to choose from. It was a nice perk, but expanding the selection would make it even better. The only downside is that the hotel itself feels a bit outdated. I think it has so much potential if the property were renovated, including the hallways, bathrooms, and guest rooms. With some updates, it could easily become an outstanding hotel. Overall, I had a pleasant stay. While I don't think the property itself is quite at a 4- or 5-star level yet, the exceptional customer service certainly deserves 5 stars. The staff truly made the experience memorable. Would I stay here again? Absolutely. The location and outstanding staff make it worth coming back. That said, I would love to see the hotel add a small lobby gift shop with snacks, drinks, and travel essentials to make the experience even more convenient for guests. The property has so much potential to truly stand out with some thoughtful updates and renovations. I would honestly love to renovate the entire place because I can see how beautiful it could become. The complimentary cheese and wine hour was a wonderful touch and something I really enjoyed and others as well. As for the cookies, they were good but cheap, but I think it would be even more memorable if the hotel partnered with a local Marin County bakery to offer fresh, locally made cookies or pastries. Supporting a local business would give guests a true taste of the area while creating a unique experience they'll remember. Those little details are what make a hotel stand out, and guests are more likely to remember both the delicious treats and the hotel that introduced them to them.

The rest of the place isn't much to see. There was one loud group of guys making noise/laughing loudly for a while down the steps from the lounges. Not sure if they were employees of the hotel or guests but it stopped after 10 minutes or so. With tight quarters you can't do much about that. The men's locker room was meh, clean, but small and kind of rank smelling like a local YMCA or something. Think that's due to it being so small and having a steam room, there's not great ventilation. The outside of the hotel raised my eyebrows, but once I got into the room, I was shocked at how clean it was. Not a single stain, hair, or grubby fingerprint was in sight. This is literally how I want every room in every hotel to be. The staff were friendly at check-in. The hotel offers breakfast, coffee, and a small fridge with beverages (beer) and frozen meals. Note: the local town seems to shut down at 9:00 p.m. every night, which is good for quietness but bad if you want a late-night bite. Cons: the building didn't seem well secured. It felt like anyone from the streets could access the outdoor stairs to guests' rooms. Definitely double-bolt your door and don't open it to strangers here. That being said the town itself seems very safe and well policed. The shower lacked water pressure, and the pillow / bed wasn't the most comfortable, tbh. I'd recommend this hotel if you need to stay in Tiburon for a couple of nights (cleanliness is my most heavily weighted hotel criterion, personally). It's not luxury, but it's clean and much more affordable than other spots in the immediate area. I will say though, for maybe a net 50-100 more per night, I stayed at the St. Regis SF (Forbes 5-star), so if you have the ability to stay in the city, you may get more bang for the buck.
