Outdoor light next to small window with thin blind - too much light flooding into room at night!
    Patrick L.

Open for two days, I may be the first guest in room 114. Thankfully the A/C is working because it's HOT outside (96 degrees at 4PM). Room is modern and clean. Nespresso machine in-room. Super friendly front desk guy. Bed seems comfortable, pillows feel like inflatables, lol. No hangers or hanging space, that blows. I won't mention what I'm paying because it's ridiculously cheap (thanks Kayak $100!) Parking in front of the room, maybe a motel? This place has potential... *Update One window has a black-out curtain, other small window has a thin blind with a spotlight on the ceiling outside next to it - like sleeping with a light on! Housekeeping talking loudly and banging around empty room next door on Sunday morning - shh, please. Oh, and the auto-on bathroom light is no fun at 4AM (it's code, so I get it.) Overall, decent place and it's new. I hope it ages well... 4 stars - motel, not hotel.

The rooms were clean however there is no sound proofing. You could hear the people in the next room like you were in the same room.

The day of my complaint is 14 of 19 for some reason they wouldn't accept another form of payment (my husbands credit card) after I reported the initial card of file for fraudulent activity on day 13. Within 24 hours my door was locked and I was not notified. I had left in the morning to Marin country Mart for a bagel and coffee and when I returned, I could not get into the room which was extremely dangerous considering I need to take medication at the same time every day. The front desk staff reported there was nothing they could do and wouldn't accept another payment method, they suggested cash. They publicly humiliated me at the front desk. Being one of the very FEW minorities staying here I felt very targeted. I felt that I would not have been treated the same if i looked different. The staff did not bother to assist/ help me navigate this.. no plan b or c? Just no? I had to stay out all day from 9am -5 pm. After all of that they said "oh well we can give you a prior authorization form".... Unbelievable! I will never stay here again. Also, the entire first floor smelled like marijuana most of my stay and the bathrooms barely flush. The water pressure is terrible in the shower and there is black mold in the bathroom. The kids loved the pool and we loved having them sleep on the pullout sofa in the livingroom, rather than having their bed feet from us. The bathroom had larger lotion bottles and we had room to spread out and eat a meal at a table and lounge on the couch. Now for the areas of improvement. Walking into both the lobby and our room there was a musty odor. The place seems understaffed and overwhelmed with maintenance issues. While we were in the lobby twice: 1) waiting to check in and then 2) waiting to request towels at the pool (second time requested in 90 minutes) we heard complaints about: 1) televisions that just turned off while patrons were watching them and wouldn't turn back on, 2) room phones that didn't work and 3) toilets that didn't flush. In our own room, everything worked but there was evidence of needing more cleaning attention and updating as well. The bathtub had been repainted in areas. Around the drain had rust spots. The shower caulking was discolored. The tray on the bathroom counter had rust on it. There were spiderwebs on the bathroom shelving and in the corner of the bathroom there was hair. And at the pool there were no pool towels for 2 hours, despite multiple requests, despite signs in the room saying don't use the room towels and despite a pool full of kids at 955 and the pool closing at 10pm. Our choices were break the rules or break the rules. Also at least one patron was upset about kids swimming and making noise and kept coming out of her room to lean down look at the pool and frown, but quiet time didn't begin until 10pm and they booked a hotel where all rooms surrounded the pool so....

If you understand what a two-star hotel should offer, you honestly can't go wrong here. When I first arrived, the small lobby had a strong smell of chicken curry, and no one was at the front desk. I rang the bell... and instead of a receptionist, a tiny Chihuahua came out and stared me down. It was unexpected, to say the least. After about five minutes, the manager (Naveem) arrived and checked me in. He was accommodating and granted my request for an upstairs room. He even sells small bottles of water!! I was able to grab two for $1, which was convenient. The room itself was clean and fully equipped ....no bells and whistles, but it had everything you need: mini fridge, microwave, ironing board, hair dryer, central heat and AC. There were a few cosmetic issues (some wall scuffs and a door knob dent in the bathroom wall), but nothing that affected the functionality of the stay. My TV initially wasn't working, but Naveem sent a technician within a couple of hours who quickly fixed it. That responsiveness mattered. For two nights, my total was around $250 during Valentine's Day and Presidents' Day weekend...which is honestly not bad at all. You also get free self-parking and easy freeway access, making the location very convenient. There's even a Burger King about two blocks away if you need a late-night bite! Overall, for a quick 2-3 night stay in the San Rafael area, this place does the job and then some. Simple, affordable, and surprisingly reliable for its category.

Tons of noise from the hallway - heard every perso going to their rooms. Decor is spartan - utilitarian chic - no microwave, mattress sagged and felt cheap. Signed up for Bonvoy because of the $400 eGift card which was applied to my prospective room before I booked with an itemized breakdown. Mini fridge had a glacier of ice buildup on the freezer, indicating high room humidity. Bathroom sliding glass door closes on its own, cutting off ventilation after taking a shower. Toilet seat was loose so it slid around. Our fire alarm went off at night because we had zero air circulation in a stuffy humid air chamber, which led to staff asking us to vacate under the assumption we had been smoking in the unit which we had not. We had to ask them to call the manager who ordered them to tell us to vacate and had to explain the problems with the unit that caused the false alarm. Parking lot is tiny, and the ticketing/gate system doesn't work oftentimes, leading people to have to back out into traffic to get out of the lot. The desk staff seems really nice and it's a shame, because we got the impression that the management is not so nice and mismanages the property by not giving their staff the resources they need to maintain the units or handle issues with the furnishings. There's lots of reviews of things being broken in various rooms and ours had a similar experience. It looks nice, but doesn't get maintained well, and management is quick to jump on you which results in an incredibly inhospitable and hostile atmosphere. I imagine working here is also not pleasant and I can pick up on the vibes that the staff are stressed.

:This Motel Has BEDBUGS:::::…read more I stayed at North Bay Inn in San Rafael following surgery and had an extremely concerning experience. Within days of checking in, I began experiencing repeated insect bites and ultimately documented multiple bugs in the room with photo and video evidence. This created an unsafe and very distressing environment, especially while recovering from two surgeries and having limited mobility. I reported the issue to management expecting a reasonable and responsible response. Instead, I was met with denial and blame. I was offered only a minimal partial refund for unused nights if I agreed to sign a waiver, which was not a reasonable solution given the circumstances. I also requested to be moved to another room due to the conditions, but a workable accommodation was not provided. The situation was not handled with the level of care or responsibility that should be expected when a guest raises a health and safety concern. Due to the seriousness of the issue and lack of proper resolution, this matter has been escalated through appropriate channels. I strongly encourage anyone considering staying here to take this into account. No guest, especially one recovering from surgery, should have to deal with these conditions or this type of response.

The person who checked me it was working on another room when I went down again with the bad key - unfortunately, he forgot to put the fact that my room was changed and taken, and at midnight, a woman opened the door with a key, apologized and must have gone back to get another room/key. The only negative is that it took about an hour to fall back to sleep again. The carpet and some of the things in the room could be changed/updated but everything worked, had a microwave, coffee pot, frig, etc. Had the hottest hot water encountered in a hotel and took time to adjust it so that it was the temp I wanted. It was just down the street from the restaurant we were eating in. Stayed here because of the price and the overall decent reviews.
