We loved our stay at Motel Inverness! It is centrally located for all of the activities we wanted to do in Pt Reyes National Seashore and on both sides of Tomales Bay. The hotel has seven rooms and a big, comfortable common area with books, windows over the marsh for bird watching, a fireplace and even a pool table. There's a big deck facing the marsh and Tomales Bay with a walkway out to a bird blind near the water for bird watching. This is a very well run and cared for property. This motel is a throw back to the days of roadside motels in the 50s that has been modernized. The room we stayed was small, but the price wasn't jacked up. I personally loved the lodge area and how it brought guests together. The deck was beautiful and something we enjoyed every morning. What a little gem out in the middle of practically nowhere. We were meeting family at Lawson Landing for a birthday and my husband made reservations here. Well it doesn't look like much from the outside, but it is spotlessly clean, and the rooms are cozy and the view is absolutely amazing. We were lucky enough that there was a photographer staying there that went out at 6:30 in the morning and photographed the sun rise and I was lucky enough to run into him and he shared the photos with me. I believe he is going to share him with the motel. I really wish I would've gotten up a little earlier to enjoy it as it was spectacularly beautiful. The new innkeepers are delightful and friendly and full of lots of great information. Thanks to them we had an adventure where we saw a bobcat and a gray wolf and elephant seals and beautiful scenery. The view from the deck Is an artist dream, and I plan to paint several of the photos that I took while there. Right down the street were two really interesting restaurants and the one that we ate at was Michelin starred and delicious. The Tamales Bay oysters were some of the best I've had in a while. I look forward to going back, staying here and trying out the Czechoslovakian restaurant that is right down the street. You should give it a try! read more

We recently spent a few mid-week nights at this small lodge. And it was a lovely well priced, and calm respite from my busy life. The manager couple and their assistant were super nice and down to earth- a real treat to talk to about the region's nature, wildlife attractions, and restaurants in town. I took my mother, and with her limited walking capabilities she was very comfortable and accommodated by a pre-arranged early check-in, their ample easy parking, wide stairs, sturdy handrails, a nice wide wooden back porch facing onto the Tomales estuary that had a lovely well built wooden furniture with nice padding - wide enough to accommodate a full person's body (not skinny if you catch my drift;) and well lit along the path to the rooms in the evening. The rooms were efficient. Not large- not too small to bee confining. We loved the firmness of the beds, although another patron mentioned they were a little firm for her liking. I was also so impressed and pleased with the selection of pillows- on firm, one light and downy, and one perfectly in the middle- just right to Goldilocks level perfection! The next step up in quality- was the common room, what increased our experience was the shared room- one evening- they had put out a Chardonnay wine for the guests to enjoy freely- quite a nice touch! And there was a stone fireplace- where we enjoyed a nice lively fire both nights! On the second night we were joined by a few other patrons by the fire for light conversation and a glass of wine. It pleased my mother to no end, and really made the experience more complete. It's moments like these that I have learned are absolutely priceless, and to find them almost in our backyard, where we can support our local businesses - I believe that is a win - win situation! Arrived in Inverness to find that our Air BNB was still occupied! The owner had screwed up the dates and we could not move in until the next day. He suggested the Motel Inverness, and what a treat it was! Two couples shared a 2 bedroom suite, with deck overlooking the water. Although right on the road, it was extremely quiet, and we did not hear any road noise, or any noise from our neighbors. Super clean, well equipped, and as others have pointed out, there is a large family room open to all, open all night, with a fire in the fireplace, coffee, tea and cookies, games, puzzles, all to be enjoyed. The managing couple were as nice as could be, and our stay was a fabulous ending to a nasty disaster. Would return fin a heartbeat! read more

We loved our stay here! It was the perfect base for exploring Point Reyes National Seashore. We primarily visited the area for birding, and the motel itself offered plenty of opportunities to spot birds--we saw hummingbirds, great egrets, starlings, woodpeckers, and even a great horned owl, all from our room's private deck. The room, while small, had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The motel's lodge was welcoming and cozy. Being able to get fresh coffee before setting out for the day was convenient, and we also enjoyed a game of pool in the evening. We also appreciated all the bird-related books! This really is an incredible spot for birders. The motel's walls are thin, but the innkeepers acknowledge this in their welcome email, so you can't really fault them! Quiet hours begin at 9 pm, and during our stay everyone followed this, so it wasn't an issue. Looking forward to staying again! read more

We spent two nights recently at Motel Inverness and I knew immediately that it would be a lovely experience. It backs up against stunning Tomales Bay and there are unobstructed views everywhere. It is peaceful, serene, old school, intimate and welcoming. There is a communal great room with a wonderful fireplace, pool table, tables for board games, bird watching chalk-boards, little frig/microwave and a gorgeous deck. There are also shaded areas to sit in the front amongst water fountains. Each room, as well, has their own small private deck overlooking Tomales Bay. We stayed in the California Quail room, which was quite cozy yet with our private deck along with the great room, there was more than enough space to relax. We appreciated their motel policies which encourages a peaceful time for all guests and I would take the few idiosyncrasies over a city hotel any day. The road can be noisy on summer weekends but all was good. Easy parking. Motel Inverness is a gem. The owners are gracious, friendly and helpful. I was going to respond, but I decided to take the high road and let the review and response speak for themselves.*** We wanted to get away for a day in Pt Reyes, but our usual place was all booked up. So we took a chance and decided to try Motel Inverness as they had availability. We stayed in the California Quail room (#5), and here are some high and low lights: Pro: -Fastest check-in ever and the hosts were pleasant. -Great location that's close to "downtown" Pt Reyes Station (which is where most of the dining and shopping is at) and the Pt Reyes National Seashore. -Heater in the room is amazing. Seems small at first, but kicks-on really quickly and does a nice job. -Coffee maker with creamer, sugar and stir sticks. The coffee is shit, so bring your own if you're picky, otherwise suck it up. -WiFi that works pretty good, but seems to disconnect occasionally. -TV w/ full complement of cable channels, including HBO. -Small deck to view the bay. Unfortunately, it was raining the entire time we were there so didn't get to enjoy it. :( -Overall the bed was ok, but I woke up super stiff and sore the next morning. -The check-in area/lodge is available 24hrs for guests and includes a pool table, reading materials, a fridge for storing goods and another great deck that has a boardwalk leading out to the bay. -Posh bathroom that was quite big. But I would've preferred a few of those sq footage be used for the main room. I mean how much time does one spend in the restroom anyways?! -Great white noise from the frogs and other marsh insects partying all night. Cons: -Room is slanted?! There's a def slope in the flooring that makes one a bit wobbly walking around―esp first thing in the a.m. where footing is always iffy, at best. -Room was a bit claustrophobic for my liking. -Cable cut-out quite a bit which makes watching TV kinda annoying. -Price point is a bit high for what you get. Our usual place charges more but at least guests get breakfast included and a much bigger space. Overall nice place to stay but we'll probably just use it as a backup for future endeavors at Pt Reyes. read more

I had the pleasure of staying here for three nights earlier this week while I explored Point Reyes park before heading to a work meeting in Sacramento. I loved the rustic feel of the motel which fit well with being there to hike and enjoy nature. I stayed in room #6 which was perfect for one person. The bed was comfortable and there was plenty of room for me, my suitcase and hiking gear. I really liked the soap and shampoo dispensers in the bathroom. So much less waste than the little bottles. The lodge room was a great bonus; I loved relaxing in the comfortable chairs there in the morning and evening watching the birds. Having the refrigerator and microwave in the lodge was a great convenience, and the coffee and biscotti were a nice treat. The location is perfect for exploring the park. The location is between the Bear Valley visitors center area and the lighthouse and pierce Point road trail areas, meaning there are great hiking options in both directions. There are some great food options nearby including an excellent market for picking up some sandwiches on the way into the park. Yes, the walls are thin, and you can hear your neighbors if they are talking or snoring, and you can hear road noise, but this is easily dealt with by bringing earplugs. I always travel with them anyway because most hotels aren't as quiet as home. The wifi was quite good which was nice since cell service is spotty in the area. I'll definitely return the next time I'm in the area! read more

We loved staying at the Motel Inverness while we hunkered down during the most recent CA storms. We were relieved to find reprieve here. The lodge was a wonderful place to relax and watch the birds. We also borrowed games to play. We stayed in Room 5 which had great natural light, comfortable bedding, and a spa like bathroom. I loved all the little touches, including the Coyuchi towels!! This is a great place for a getaway to Point Reyes. There's new management as of Jan. 2022, who are friendly and very helpful with any information around the area. Some things that make it a desirable stay: beautiful location directly on Tomales Bay. the large, comfortable lodge room and deck with perfect, quiet views. small motel (7 rooms?)with personal attention and hardly any others around to distract from the serene location. close enough to the town of Inverness Park where there's a market and restaurant. because it's located right on Point Reyes peninsula, you avoid any traffic from day-trippers and can get out to see the sights while the place is still quiet. It is literally just a few minutes from Hearts Desire beach, a good place to get out on the bay if you are kayaking. read more

Was able to make a reservation last minute, even though the website indicated my request was unavailable (there was a note below the denied request that said to please call the office so I did). Lynn helped me book three nights over the phone, two nights in one room and a third night in a different room. She was very friendly and accommodating, and gave me some suggestions for restaurants and supplies. Motel Inverness has been our go to place to stay in Marin when we're looking for somewhere that feels peaceful and relaxing and respectful of the beauty all around. When my husband and I got married in Point Reyes we booked out the whole motel and had our wedding party stay there. The lodge area made for great late night board game & pool table time, and the porch provided an amazing place to watch the day and night go by. Everything was so quiet and easy. We returned 3 years later (would have been earlier, but Covid...) and had our first night away from our now 1 year old. It was exactly as we remembered - with new hosts, but the same friendly, easy atmosphere. The room was clean, the coffee was delicious, and it felt like a getaway in which only we existed. I always look at the websites, photos and Yelp comments. There was one comment that was incorrect. A person said it was not clear about no dogs or kids, etc. It is very clear on their webpage under 'Policies'. I don't know how anyone can miss it. We now plan to book a weekend in Mid July, as long as Covid19 is not raging. I also found the pricing fair. I do not book a room for the room, I book it for the location and the environment I want to explore or be entertained at. After all, a nice bed, I always bring my coffee, TV works, I am good. Very quaint and cute motel! Staying here will force you to relax and enjoy the fresh ocean air and nature. We stayed in Room #5 California Quail Room. Had a comfy queen size bed. The bathroom was very spa like blended with nature. The little seating area on your own deck is accessible through your private bathroom. The room was very clean and they have soap & lotion(smells spa like) dispensers above the sink and in the shower, shampoo and body wash. Here's a few suggestions we have if you stay here: 1) Bring a travel fan, It's extremely quiet at night and we could hear the people next to our room snoring, so if you are a light sleeper like me, a fan is a great idea. FYI, the room only has a heater. 2) Bring a cooler for snacks and drinks. There is a gourmet market about a mile down the road. 3) Bring your own ground coffee and filters, the coffee provided in the room was soo watered down and the cheapest coffee on the planet, we couldn't drink it. 4) Pack warm clothes to sit out on the deck at night, it's soo peaceful! However, in the early morning you can't too many mosquitoes. read more

Oh the joy of the one-star review! Here's the deal. This seems like a nice place. They don't like having kids there. That's perfectly reasonable. The problem is that they don't mention the fact that kids are not allowed except in the finest of fine print at the very end of the booking process. The only reason I found out about it is that, some time after booking, I emailed them a question about my kid, whom I intended to bring. Instead of an apology that they should have been clearer, I got a curt ALL CAPS response berating me for failing to read their policies, and then a second email berating me further and claiming their policy was "very clear". Sorry, it's not remotely clear and I'm sure I'm not the first person to make this mistake. I just thank my lucky stars I emailed them or it would have been a nasty scene when I showed up. Fortunately I was able to cancel the reservation as it was still more than 7 days out (would they have honored it otherwise?) Anyway, the spiteful and utterly unapologetic response I got leads me to believe the management of this place is NOT the kind of people you want to be giving your money to. Hopefully they'l be inspired to clean up their act and get their website updated to make their policies clear. - EDIT - I'm absolutely amazed to see a response here, again berating me. Listen amigo - do you want to know who reads the "policy" page on a website? No one. That's who. If you have an unusual policy, such as "no kids" then you need to make it abundantly clear in a much more obvious place. If you don't make it clear then don't be a jerk when people don't notice it. I enjoy this kind of motel or hotel--casual, clean, friendly, and best of all, really well located. I had always wondered about this place and finally stayed here for a couple of perfect late-September days. The location is stunning--right by Tomales Bay and not far from Point Reyes trails and long, quiet beaches. It's too dangerous to swim at Drake's Beach, but it's a gorgeous walk. My room was pleasantly decorated and very comfortable except for the thin walls. I wore earplugs to tune out the snoring next door one night and the remarkably long-lasting en-suite gymnastics the next night. But, it was reasonably priced for this area, the innkeeper, Mara, was charming, the big, comfy lodge area for guests and the deck expanded the territory very nicely, and as mentioned, the location can't be beat. read more

The Motel Inverness is a great place if you want to get away. Off the beaten path, away from the crowds at Point Reyes Station. But only a 5-7 minute drive away from great restaurants, and breathtaking views. We have stayed here 4 times already and each time it seems to get better and better. Everytime we go, we get to know the area better and we are starting to get to know the owners of the establishment. They are very honest and humble folks. They understand hospitality and it really shows. The rooms are always clean and well maintained. And they provide a coffee maker in every room...a definite plus for those of you who wake up early. It is always well stocked with regular or decaf, cream and tons of sugar. The main lodge is nice and cozy. Fireplace, pool table, mini fridge, board games,magazines and comfortable couches. Great for a family vacation. You can also bird watch here. The back patio leads to the marshlands. Take the narrow wooden pathway to the end and enjoy the birds. Caution- it gets very dark early in this area. The roads are dark and you could miss the motel very easily while driving at night. I highly suggest that you arrive in the day time and get to know the surrounding area. I have missed the entrance to the motel a few times and U turns are not really an option on these roads. Marin Sun Farms is only a 5 minute drive away. The have the best burgers!! read more

Great service and lodging. We had rooms #2 (with a kitchen) and #5 (no kitchen. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The rooms, grounds and common areas were clean. The rooms were cute, with simple but elegant decorations. There was little noise from the road or neighbors. Both rooms had decks with views of the bay and hills. The kitchen was very good to have for breakfast & for one of our dinners. Hot water & heating of the air was not a problem. The common area of the motel was nice, and we had a meal there & hung out. They have information about the area, board games, pool, card games, tv (also in the rooms), and nice videos. The main deck in the back is a nice place to hang out. Beware: No wi-fi here. Other than that, this place is exactly what is needed for someone on a budget who's looking to spend some time in the Point Reyes area. We stayed for two nights mid-week to attend an impromptu wedding at the lighthouse. The innkeepers were very warm and welcoming; we even "borrowed" some cuttings from the beautiful and well-kept garden to make the boutonnieres and coursages--no problem when we asked. The rooms are small, bathrooms small, walls are very thin (you can almost hear conversations among other guests). This is not the place to go if you are looking for a high-end romantic and secluded getaway--thankfully we were more interested in making the wedding and not breaking the bank. BUT for the price, kind service, clean rooms, and overall hospitality coupled with the views and duck blind out in to the middle of Tomales Bay, we were very happy campers. Beware also of the Quail Room--we loved it EXCEPT for the skylight window, which shone very bright light very early in the morning (we have blackout curtains at home... it was...jarring). read more

I stayed here way back in September. I just got back into the country and remembered how awesome this place was and thought that it was worth writing my first yelp review over. We decided to stay here as I wanted to take a trip to see Tomales Bay. Had a great hiking day with amazing sunny weather only to return to a car that would not start. Decided to not worry about it until the next day and hitched a ride from a stranger to check in to Motel Inverness. I was greeted by the innkeeper, I believe her name was Shannon (so sorry if not), and explained my situation. She sympathized and told us to put our things in our room and she would give us a ride to the local market to get some food. We gladly accepted the offer, got some sandwiches and some wine from the market and returned to the motel. Before parting for the night, Shannon gave us a gift of Point Reyes Blue Cheese. Who does this? Amazing. We completely forgot about the vehicle predicament we were in and enjoyed the beautiful facilities and view that our room offered at Motel Inverness. The next morning Shannon helped us get a hold of a tow truck company and gave us a ride out to the Tomales Bay parking lot where we left our car. The car situation was fixed after a couple of hours and we were on our way with a great memory of our trip intact. It would not have been that way without the above and beyond hospitality of Motel Inverness. I will be returning this summer... with a more reliable car. read more

This is a great lodging option for first timers in the area. Although we are new to point Reyes, have never stayed there. Patty who was in the office was really great in giving us tips about which restaurants to go to, the hikes , etc. She volunteered to make reservations for us for dinner. You truly feel welcome there. The living room is great in all weather ( I assume) it overlooks the marsh. Has a nice fireplace and seating. A small kitchen area for coffee and tea and utensils. There is a pool table, we had it to ourselves this trip and it was great to pass time playing pool before dinner. The lodge room was adequate, but the bathroom was small, really small shower stall. But it is updated. Nothing looks old. The furniture in the room was quite good for the space. We could put away everything. Stayed only one night. Wi-fi did not work in the room , but worked in the office/living room. There is not lot of privacy though, you can hear people talking in the next room. read more

I was fortunate enough to celebrate my birthday at the Motel Inverness with my sweetheart boyfriend that surprised me with a weekend trip to Point Reyes. Motel Inverness was everything we could ask for and more. Lynn was charming and helpful in showing us what to see, where to eat, and other helpful tips. What we especially loved was how guests are allowed access and use of the common area anytime during their stay. We spent such fun nights grilling oysters, playing pool, and watching t.v. on the comfy couches. Our room was perfect. We stayed in the Great Egret Suite. It had its own darling kitchen equipped with all the utensils, pots, pans, and anything else you'd ever need (more than I have at my own house to be honest). What made it even more amazing was that the back kitchen door led to the back of the property that consisted of a patio, deck, grassy area, and led right to the edge of the marsh wetlands. We plan on returning as quick as we can. Not only did we fall in love with Motel Inverness, but with Point Reyes. A weekend full of hiking, horse-back riding, local delicious foods, elk sightings, and breathtaking beaches? Um YES. Best. Birthday. Ever. read more

Fabulous little motel/hotel (what's the difference, really, these days?). Gorgeous views of the saltwater marsh and there's actually a long Audubon Society dock which allows you to walk a couple hundred yards out into it. Rooms were quite small but tasteful. The heating element was a bit dinky and old, but even though the weather was in the 40's, we weren't cold at night thanks to the very warm blankets they provided. The main lodge room is sweet - done up in that real nice NoCal woodsy way - with binoculars for bird-watching, a pool table, and a little kitchen area. We prepared some simple breakfasts there before starting the day's hiking around Point Reyes. It's really a great place and they could charge a lot more for what they offer (although again, our rooms - the cheapest ones, I think - were quite small). We will definitely be back. read more

What a great little place to stay when you're exploring around the Tomales Bay area! My husband and I decided that we needed a "soft landing" back to work and regular life after our 2-week honeymoon in Hawaii, so we decided to extend our honeymoon and go exploring around Tomales Bay. We just happened to pass by Motel Inverness and though I'm always a little put off by the term "motel", it looked charming enough from the street that we were intrigued. When we got there, we had 2 options left...stay in the bigger and nicer room with a beautiful back patio or stay in a much smaller room with a tiny window. Because we were already feeling a little pinched, we decided to stay in the tiny room. As we were checking in, we struck up a friendly conversation with the proprietor and mentioned how happy we were because we had just gotten married and were on our honeymoon. Well, people still believe in love because her face lit up and told us that she's letting us stay in the really beautiful room for the bargain-basement price of the tiny room. It wasn't just the fact that she gave us a super good deal, but it was so wonderful to see her reaction that was so genuinely happy for us. They have a great common living room area that is cozy -- complete with a fireplace and pool table. And if for some reason you don't end up in one of the rooms with a patio, the common room has a great patio you can use with lounge chairs and a barbecue. This place is gem!!! read more
