Thick crust original pizza.
David B.

Hotel Loyal...where to begin? I am almost 50 years old and have been coming to Hotel Loyal since I was a child. My first memories are that of my 6 year old self. After all this time, I have not once been disappointed. Although I no longer live in the area (I was born in Latrobe), I am sure to ALWAYS have at least one pizza night at Hotel Loyal EVERY VISIT back home. Sometimes, God willing, I have dined multiple times in one visit! :) Now having said that, this review will be of their thick crust (original) pizza. If you are not a fan of thick crust pizza (my wife, with her New York City origins, of course prefers a thin crust), then you will have to try the thick crust and decide for yourself. However, most everyone I have ever introduced to Hotel Loyal thick crust pizza had LOVED it. When I was in the Navy, friends would sometimes come to visit Latrobe with me and I would take them to the Hotel....and they loved it! I have even had family members that come to visit me purchase a parbaked pizza and deliver it to me here in NC! And once again, everyone I have shared it with LOVES it! (Disclaimer: this is my own honest experience, your mileage may vary...but I would be surprised) Ok, now that all of my bias is out on display, I will dial it back to give my review... If you chose to dine in, you will be treated to a small, cozy dining area, adorned with colorful neon beer signs, the aroma of delicious pizza wafting throughout. There are both tables and booths, all of which are always clean and stocked with salt, pepper and "sprinkle cheese" shakers. Grated Parmesan for all those not from the area. The pizza has always come out fresh. The service has always been attentive and helpful, even during the busy times, and with both dine-in and takeout, it can get busy! The prices are very reasonable (even in these times of record inflation). And if you are not in the mood for their pizza (how that could be, I do not know), their menu offers a wide range of "pizza restaurant" options. (I have been told by the odd members of my party who choose to order something other than the pizza, that their food was always on point.) In conclusion, while I have grown up with Hotel Loyal, I would give them a 5/5 regardless. My only problem is that, very recently, they have scaled back their hours and are now only open Thursday, Friday and Saturday... I truly hope this changes in the near future.

Grilled chicken salad
Nick M.

In this day and age, iceberg lettuce has been replaced by mixed greens, I think Hotel Loyal is behind the times here. I ordered a grilled chicken salad. Came with fries, hard boiled egg, cucumbers, Tomatoes and onions. No cheese, no croutons. The chicken is definitely a mystery meat and it is not grilled. Called and told a man by the name of Mike about the salad, didn't really care what I had to say.

I ordered the thin crest pizza and it was very good. Being a truck driver I've had a lot of pizza on the road. This one is up there.

Carmine’s Pizza & Pasta

We visit my wife's aunt in Latrobe about once a year from Connecticut, where the default cuisine is…read moreItalian. There is something different and special about an Italian restaurant in Western PA. It's just better. More delicious and more hospitable. Carmine's is the perfect example. As mentioned in other reviews, Carmine's smells amazing. It will be crowded, so either arrive early or be prepared to wait. It's worth it. Everything our party ordered was terrific--zucchini planks, cheesy bread (from Enrico's), polenta, eggplant parm, and even an outstanding version of a Pittsburgh steak salad with that famous Carmine's dressing. So good! Great portion size for the price (50% cheaper than Connecticut). I also agree with reviewers who consider the marinara to be a tad too sweet, but that's up to your personal taste. It's still delicious. Carmine made a personal appearance at our table and was super hospitable. We could not have enjoyed the experience any more than we did. We will be back to Carmine's every time we are in Latrobe.

We were visiting my in-laws for a longer stay this time so we had the chance to explore more…read morerestaurants in the area. Our aunt mentioned Carmine's Pizza & Pasta so we decided to give it a try. When we arrived, the restaurant was packed. We later realized it was the day of the St. Patrick's Day parade so many people seemed to stop by afterwards. We noticed a lot of tables enjoying pizza but since we had just had pizza the day before, we decided to try some other dishes. We started with the Fried Cheese "Formaggio Fritto". The menu mentioned that it was made with aged provolone which is why we ordered it but it tasted more like mozzarella to us. Because of that, it wasn't quite what we expected. I ordered the Lump Crab Fettuccine with marinara sauce. The marinara was sweeter than I personally prefer and I didn't notice much crab flavor in the dish. My husband tried one of the polenta dishes since we don't often see polenta offered at Italian restaurants. We originally thought the polenta itself would be baked but it seemed that only the top was baked. We prefer polenta that's crispy on the outside so it wasn't exactly what we had in mind. The sauce on top was also on the sweeter side, though it paired better with the polenta. One thing we have to mention is the portion sizes. They were incredibly generous! My husband ended up getting about four meals out of his polenta dish. We also ordered tiramisu to go which was sweeter than we prefer but enjoyable with a nice espresso flavor. I almost feel bad writing this review because the staff were extremely nice and friendly. Overall, I think the flavors just didn't quite match our personal taste but we appreciated the great service and generous portions.
