A friend recommended that we stay there for our trip to New Clairveux. She stays often when visiting her friend. It's different in terms of a hotel. I call it a cross between a hotel and an AirBnB. I can see a girlfriend's weekend out where we had separate rooms with a central kitchen and porch for wine and snacky snacks. It also had a wash machine in case that is needed. Hands down one of the nicest places in Chico to stay. Hotel is adorable with tasteful decor and comfortable bed and furnishings. Completely enjoyed the hot tub on our private patio. This is absolutely my favorite hotel to stay at in Chico. I come often to visit family and have stayed in local hotels for space and business reasons. Efimia is always super sweet and responsive. She's been super patient with me and my scheduling needs and questions. I love how it's a blend between airbnb and a hotel. It feels "exclusive" and offers a unique personal space and cleanliness as well as special snacks and treats. It feels like home away from home. The location is quiet and a great proximity to Lost Dutchman for beer and snacks, Wine Time for wine and snack and Roots for breakfast and lunch! We had a wonderful experience at Hotel James! There was great communication from the owner prior to our stay so we knew what to expect. It is a very private and quiet experience, and we didn't see a single soul during our stay. The Zinfandel room was very large and spacious. We rented two rooms for our first stay here because reviews were awesome and we really weren't thrilled with the well known hotel in town we have been staying at for years. This place is amazing. Checkin is easy as pie. Rooms are spacious, clean, well lit and all amenities. There is a central area including a kitchen that offers coffee, tea, muffins, bagels, juice and much more. Parking is right in front. Went to dinner at Wine Time which is right next door. Happy to give this a five star rating and we look forward to staying on our next visit to Chico. read more

My only regret about hotel James is that we could not enjoy it longer. What a delightful and hospitable place to stay. We were on a road trip and primarily staying at Best Western hotels. For the same price or less, this was worlds apart. Only one other room was occupied which is surprising. We felt like we had a mini mansion to ourselves. A small glitch happened and the innkeeper couldn't have responded any better than she did. We were dazzled with the customer service as well as the fine accommodations. There is access to a full kitchen with a Keurig coffee maker and breakfast treats. I would absolutely stay here next time I found myself in Chico. For dinner, we walked a short distance to Sol restaurant which was terrific Mexican food (happy hour before 5:30 Earlier is better as they got crowded). When arriving, keep a sharp eye to find the driveway /road to pull into. This property is on the north end of town. It was easy on and off the freeway but no fast food joints immediately nearby which is just fine by us. read more

A fabulous hotel. It's like an elegant bed and breakfast in a quiet neighborhood. We booked all five rooms for a family reunion and graduation celebration. My girlfriend and I just finished our stay here this past weekend. This was by far the most beautiful and best value accommodation in Chico. This property is tucked away at the edge of town near Esplanade and Eaton, which was great because we wanted to avoid the downtown Halloween chaos from the CSU college students. It was quiet, clean, and featured really nice modern amenities. The common area contained a plethora of complementary goodies like juice, bagels, scones, and oatmeal. There were even candy dishes scattered about constant with the upcoming Halloween holiday. There is also a wine bar (Wine Time), taproom (Lost Dutchman Taproom), and brunch spot (Roots Catering) on the property which was very convenient. When checking out on Sunday, we began our drive back to the Bay Area when I received a call from the hotel manager. She was calling to let me know that we had forgot a necklace in the room. At this point we where too far out of town and she graciously said they would ship it to me and texted me the tracking number the next day. This whole property, especially the hotel is beautiful. The family run operation is absolutely incredible and I really can't recommend this place enough for your next stay. We will definitely be back! read more

We rented out Wine Time for our wedding and rented out the entire 5 room hotel for ourselves and our bridal party over the weekend. We could not have had a better experience with Hotel James and would highly recommend this hotel to anyone. For a group event, being able to rent out the entire facility was a wonderful way to celebrate together. The facility is brand new and well under price for the beautiful amenities in the building. We stayed in the Zinfandel room which is absolutely gorgeous, spacious, luxurious, and includes a private patio with a state of the art hot tub. The group area is perfect for hanging out together and well stocked with food and coffee. There is an on-site laundry room which was exceptionally helpful getting ready for the big day. The manager was gracious, polite, extremely accommodating, and a pleasure to do with business with. I cannot thank her enough for making my special day better than I could have possibly imagined. This place is as good as it gets. When you see a lot of 5 star reviews, you have to wonder if they are fake. Nope! This Hotel is the gold standard for hotels in my opinion. Good luck getting a room, as there are only 5 rooms and this Hotel is a hybrid between a Hotel and a Bed and Breakfast. The rooms are classy, the furniture is beautiful. The rates are reasonable. The only problem is that all other hotels will pale in comparison if I cannot get a room when I am in Chico. The owner is one of the nicest, friendliest and approachable person that I have ever met. The room temperature control in the room was a bit confusing, but the owner came over and adjusted the temperature of the room at almost 9PM. I cannot say enough nice things about this place. I may tailor my Chico visit dates around room availability at this establishment. I would like to see this hotel franchised as this business model is a winner. Awesome place - quaint, private, quiet & charming! The room was set up like a 5 star hotel with attention to the smallest details. The grounds, the exterior of the building & the interior common area was impeccable. Granite counters with sinks, a nice sitting area & a great laundry room with modern equipment available to all. I'm an early riser & the counters greeted the residents with fresh pastries, Keurig coffee maker with choices of brews & refer stocked with creamer choices, cream cheese & juices that added a wonderful touch to the overall experience. This place was such a great surprise. We came to Chico for the stage race this weekend and couldn't believe no other bike racer booked here. It's so fabulous! Creepy a bit with the lighting but I love eerie shit. No one was there but us the first night which ruled. We tried the beer and panini at the tap room it was yummy and hit the spot. We caught the daughter of the owner and chatted her up a lot as she was refilling the food in the kitchen. SUCH a nice woman, so so nice. They are so accommodating and generous this really made my weekend. LOVE! Only gripes are the rugs in the place are slippery as hell, watch out. Not enough counter space to do makeup in the bathroom. Not bad, but not as great as some of the reviews claim. We stayed two nights in the Merlot room. Check-in was easy, since we were emailed a unique door code just prior to our visit. Great location tucked into a semi-private area just off of the main road (heads-up: the parking lot fills up fast on Friday and Saturday nights with patrons visiting the two nearby bars, so parking can be a bit of an issue). We found the room itself to be dark and sparse. The bed was very firm/worn and I woke up with a sore back each morning. The pillows were all hard and flat, and in desperate need of replacing. There is no daily service to make up the bed and replenish towels (not a big deal, just wish we had known since neither the website nor confirmation emails mentioned anything about the lack thereof). Looking back through some of the positive reviews, it looks like this hotel was renovated in 2015, so it might be time for a few updates. The breakfast/common areas were decent, but you could definitely hear every sound through the door to the room as other guests arrived late at night. Breakfast offerings were basic but fresh. If you want no-frills, this is your place. read more

I don't get the negative post. Based upon my experience it looks like a personal vendeta or something because there is a lot of false information in the post. I work near this hotel and just visited it to look at it more closely for business lodging for my employer, and a potential place for some of my family. It is EXTREMELY clean (like in a brand spankin' new, 5 star resort kinda way) and the building was just built...I watched it go up...how is that old?) I actually commented to the owner on how I could smell the "newness" when I walked in (this before I even saw the negative yelp post) ...and I meant in a good way! And based upon my experience of booking lodging, which is substantial, I find it to be underpriced for such beautiful, clean and luxurious accomodations (but priced just right for the Chico market!) The furniture and fixtures are gorgeous. There are a lot of unique, restored vintage lighting and other pieces. The beds look luxurious (I'm considering a staycation here!) and the rooms are very spacious, warm and welcoming. The common area is also beautiful and spotless. From the rooms to the common space to a complimentary laundry area, this place is dialed in for a relaxing, low key stay. The owner was very nice to me and pleasant to talk with about the hotel. When you book a room here, you'll be getting the charm of a B&B without someone onsite to make you feel awkward. Staff is accessible via telephone and you receive your own code and come and go as you please. I personally really like this kind of set up. It's this PERFECT place for so many lodging scenarios...a girls getaway or staycation in Chico, a wedding party, a small family reunion (I understand their is a deal if you book all 5 rooms), or just a good nights sleep on the North end of town for out of towners who prefer a quieter, more "boutique" style stay. I'm very exited to have this venue in Chico! There are 4 queen bedrooms (1 is ADA accessible) and 1 King Suite (has small patio and hot tub as well as 2 pull out couches or total room for 6 people). I believe small dogs are welcome. All have private baths, separate Heat/Air Conditioner, WiFi, Satellite TV. Your stay includes a continental breakfast. I also, know well, and often frequent the restaurant next door, Roots Catering, which I can't say enough good things about (yum!) and Wine Time which is right in the same complex. The whole "Lost Dutchman" area is a gem for North Chico! I'm looking forward to an ongoing relationship with Hotel James for our business customers as well as my out of town family and friends! read more

My husband and I were in town for one night for a friends wedding. The location was super convenient and clean. I loved the personal pin feature to access the hotel and office, we were able to come and go as we pleased but still had the security that not just anyone could enter the building. Although it's not your typical front desk experience, I was always able to have timely and helpful communication by email and phone. All the rooms were named after wine which was a fun idea. The room was very clean and cozy! Also the room heater in the bathroom was excellent getting out of the shower in the morning. As an added bonus, my husband and I were also celebrating our own wedding anniversary and I wanted to do a little something special and I was able to coordinate with staff. Staff went above the average service and i appreciated it so much! I would definitely recommend a stay here to anyone visiting Chico! We will definitely be coming back! read more
