A Disappointing Return. I'm genuinely sad to be updating my review from 5 stars to 1 star because my stay here last year was one of the best hotel experiences I've ever had. I praised Hotel Donaldson publicly, recommended it without hesitation, returned this year intentionally, and even purchased their merchandise. That context matters because this comes from a former fan. Unfortunately, this year's stay was a dramatic step backward. The biggest issue started immediately with parking. I arrived during a blizzard, with snow piled to the curb and no visible valet staff despite valet parking being advertised. I had to self-park and then go inside to find staff, which defeats the purpose of offering valet, especially in severe weather. The following day, I asked the reception about the consequences of not moving my car due to snow accumulation and was told it would be a $30 citation (less than the cost of parking, so I rolled the dice). The next day, I returned to find my car had been towed. To be clear, I accept responsibility for ignoring posted signage. My frustration is not about being towed. It's about the lack of warning or proactive guidance from the hotel, particularly when this is clearly a known issue. When I later mentioned it downstairs at the restaurant, staff and patrons openly acknowledged that this happens often. That disconnect is avoidable and disappointing. Beyond parking, the lack of basic guest amenities became impossible to ignore. There is no microwave in the room or reliably available at all. I called reception to see if they could rewarm some soup, and was told: "Sorry, no, our only microwave has been loaned out to a long-term guest." There is also no ice machine, requiring a call to reception and a trip to the desk. "Room service" is limited to the downstairs restaurant's hours, which do not always include breakfast. The in-room technology is outdated and feels out of place in a boutique hotel charging premium rates. Last year, these were minor quirks overshadowed by exceptional hospitality. This year, they compounded into a frustrating experience, especially during a winter storm when guests are spending more time in their rooms. I'm writing this publicly not to pile on, but in the hope that it reaches someone empowered to make changes. Hotel Donaldson used to be something special. I know it can be again. Right now, though, the experience no longer matches the reputation that once made it a highlight of my travels. read more

We brought our dog along and it was the best hotel we've had with our dog! It was an easy check in and the staff were so kind to our dog! They have complimentary coffee and pastries in the morning, complimentary wine and cheese hour in the evening, and turndown service at night to include chocolate truffles! It's so evident they care about the guests and it makes the stay so much better than a big brand hotel! The rooms were spacious and quiet! No sounds of neighboring guests that can keep you up or your pet barking. And it has to be said that the bed was beyond comfortable. Usually it's standard hotel mattresses and you know what to expect but the one we had was so comfortable, The room is set up with a minibar with prices that aren't absolutely outrageous, They have wine glasses and a corkscrew in each room which is a nice touch! Along with robes and slippers! The location is perfect downtown so it's easy to walk to dinner, shops and nightlife! It shares a building with Blarney Stone Pub so there is an option to order room service food from the restaurant to your room. The hotel offers a fitness center, plenty of amenities and a rooftop sky bar! We will absolutely be returning! It was a fun stay that we more than enjoyed! read more

I am not sure how this hotel gets such great reviews. The bed and pillows were awful. The mattress was so soft you practically hit the box spring when you sat on it. My son burst out laughing when he sat on it because it was so soft. The pillows were just fabric with no actual substance to them at all. On top of that they had unsecure, unstable lamps on the nightstand on top of glass. Of course the lamp was somehow knocked over and broke the glass in which they charged me $50 for their ineptness. read more

Great hotel, clean and new, with comfortable bed, great shower, nice service and free coffee and pastries. Perfect location in Fargo with tons of food options within one block. BUT don't let them put you in Room 9. Machinery in the wall next to bed runs til 2:30 AM and is impossible to sleep through even with a white noise app. read more

Cute place! Their restaurant was under renovation so we did not get to eat there but we did stay in single king bed for a night. Room 8 was designed by a photography. It was very white and like a museum. We quite liked it. They have a complimentary wine and cheese hour and a truffle during a turndown service. Both were very fun a delicious. They have a breakfast that if we are planning to hit the road early - just ask and they can give it to you a bit early. All portions are in plastic wrap and easy to take on the road/back to your room. read more

We weren't forwarned that our room, #1 was above a club that had a blaring DJ and music that lasted until after midnight. I tried calling the front desk, twice. No answer. There were fake fingernails embedded in the carpet, and one in the bathroom. Just gross/disgusting!! Has me wonder what else may be in the carpet. Reached out to the manager via email yesterday, have not heard back about the absurd charge for a room that was clearly not worth the price. The best thing was the valet service, but that was a separate charge. Won't stay again. read more

Is this hotel under new ownership? We enjoyed aspects of our stay - the room was large, the staff were friendly, the location excellent and we enjoyed wine & cheese in the afternoon. However the staffing levels appeared to be far less than needed - one person was doing multiple jobs. This seemed unfair to staff and guests. We often had to wait at the front desk for someone to arrive - they were usually performing valet and other services. We were promised pastries and drinks in the morning and told to fill out a request for the time we'd like them to be delivered to our room but nothing ever arrived during our 3 night stay and no explanation provided. Why was this service advertised? We had to ask for toilet paper several times. No extra rolls were provided in the room. This has never happened to us during a hotel stay before. Also, the electrical outlets weren't working in the bathroom. I would suggest considering these factors before booking this hotel. read more

I am not sure I can say anything about HoDo - Hotel Donaldson - that has not already been said, but we've had such a great experience that I'd like to try. We came to Fargo to celebrate our anniversary by taking in a Bison football game and staying in this luxurious boutique hotel for the weekend. We've stayed in Fargo before (our daughter attended NDSU) but never at Hotel Donaldson. I am so glad we decided to do a CFB weekend for this anniversary. The Bison win and this hotel made it so worth it. HoDo has an industrial chic vibe, with each guest room decorated with original paintings by regional artists. We stayed in the Big Dog suite (this is a dog friendly hotel so that may explain the name, not sure). If you are coming to Fargo and have the chance to stay in this hotel DO SO. There are a lot of hotels in and around Fargo, many chains from budget to mid-range, but HoDo is truly unique. The building it is in has a really interesting history. The conversion to a boutique hotel was done extremely well. This place is exclusive, in part due to its size - only 18 rooms. The Big Dog suite, room 10, is a 1.5 bathroom, 1 bedroom space with high wood clad ceilings, hardwood floors, comfortable custom furniture and a plush king sized bed. The hotel is in a busy, energetic part of downtown but we still slept great in the well appointed and very comfortable soft-mattressed bed. The main bathroom is also a treat. Bring your bath bomb or salts for the 2 person, jetted soaking tub. Plan to linger in the large rainfall shower with a separate handheld head. Plush robes and bath towels and Aveda bathing and haircare products. Kind, friendly, competent staff. Turndown service with housemade chocolate truffles (sublime) plus a unique and special touch - a CD softly playing on the bedside Bose player featuring regional artists. Ours was Deb Jenkins who I'd never heard of but really enjoyed and now plan to buy/stream! This place is a jewel in otherwise unassuming Fargo among a sea of typical mass market chain hotels. Hotel is nice. It used to be the coolest thing that hit North Dakota. I would stay at the hotel but don't bother eating there. If I stay at a hotel if this uniqueness and artistic flare, I expect to eat the same way. The addition of the Blarney Stone is bringing it down. I was driving across the US to take my daughter to college. The math worked out that staying in Fargo was where we needed to stay the third night. I picked this hotel because it was downtown and the pictures were good. After driving 10 hours I guess any room would have looked good but this room was more than just good. There was room to spread out, a comfy couch to sit and watch the TV if you like, nice bathroom with plush bathrobes and slippers. The turn down service was sweet...I mean really sweet. The chocolate left was decadent. The beds were top quality comfortable. The kind you sink into and sleep like a baby. After check-in we wandered around Fargo. What a great city. There was live music, great ice cream and we even ducked into the Fargo Theater to catch the Barbie movie. We used the valet service because...who wants to find parking in a city? It was great. The next morning the car was around for us within 5 minutes. The breakfast was not 100% as it was just what looked like Costco muffins but the coffee was good and it was brought to our room for free. So, I can't complain. The only thing I regret is that we drove 10 hours to get to the hotel and so we didn't have a lot of time to explore. This stay made me want to return to Fargo and I don't think that would be true if we said in a chain on the outskirts. read more

I was beyond impressed with my stay at the Donaldson. The minute you walk in, you can tell this isn't your typical hotel. The rooms are extremely spacious, the inviting lobby is inviting, the food at the restaurant is delicious, and the staff went above and beyond for any need that I had. I could not have had a better experience. The location is absolutely perfect - beautiful shops and places to eat right outside and it's super close to the airport. Stayed one night in this lovely little hotel. It is definitely aspirational and hits all the right vibes. Stayed in many hotels around the US and Europe like this. Arty, small, chill. The only thing missing (thank god) is the 'cool kid' staff. Here the staff have the midwestern friendliness that makes me smile. Chose to stay here due to the square footage and the interior design of the suite. This place is just an overpriced, polished DIVE of a hotel room if you are to be in it long enough to look at it with a scrupulous eye. It has a very tacky pretentious modernness to it, and the majority of the interior appears as if a lot of corners were cut and the interior also appears as of it were done for the lowest buck possible. Honestly it sounds crazy and outlandish to say, but I do not believe hotel staff are even American. I believe they are just posing that they are American. There was lots of promise that quality guest services would be provided to me 24 hours to ensure my stay was as quaint and lovely as it could be. I work in the restaurant industry as well, and would like to say I've received absolutely terrible, garbage service from staff from the moment I pulled up to the hotel entrance. In no way have staff been accommodating and in no way are they trying to ensure that my stay is as peachy and Gucci as it can be. Not at all. I'd like to note that I'm a quality and professional companionship services provider servicing the North Dakota area. I have decided to go ahead and invest the time in running this independent business all on my own and it has proven to be highly lucrative up until my decision to stay at Hotel Donaldson. There has been a lot of buzz and interest for my services in both the Bismarck and Fargo area, so I considered it very wise of myself to invest in coming to the Fargo area where my exposure reaches a far wider population base. After browsing through available hotels, I got suckered into purchasing "The Big Dog" suite for a couple days due to the shiny and glossy advertisement photographs depicted--I got suckered and hustled by "glamour pics" of the "suite" if you will. I did so because I wanted to stay in nicer accomodations than every other hotel around that is equivalent to staying at The Quality Inn or The Budget Rate Inn. Staying at cheap hotels does nothing for providing my client with any sort of quality experience. I do not want to be inviting my clients over to a dump, as many hotel rooms are. Throughout my career, I've stayed at pretty much every hotel but this one is one I hadn't. I don't enjoy talking on the phone so I sent an email to the hotel asking various questions that I had regarding my stay and entertainment in the area etc. The first red flag that should have tipped me off that a hotel representative claimed all I had to do was park outside the front entrance and someone would be there to valet my car and help me with my luggage etc. I notified them that I would be pulling up in a G6, and for the kind of money I'm paying to stay here, would have expected to see the valet boy and the bell hop both ready and eager to park my car and get my luggage onto a cart right away and direct me to checkin. I am a professional provider, therefore I packed up my life and my wardrobe and brought it with me. I unpacked my luggage and hauled it all piece by fucking piece into the entrance, where a very suspicious gentleman offered me help out of the supposed blue and offered to "stand and watch" my belongings as I went to cart more in. He tried to make casual chit chat with me which was very irritating. It's very irritating to pull up to a hotel that is expecting you and receive absolutely no help with your parking your car or your luggage as was promised. Then I was directed to go to floor two to checkin. Honestly I felt quite openly judged up and down by this bitch and just wanted her to quit talking about little pastries I could have brought to my room and get on with checking in. 2 staff members were twiddling their thumbs while I was obviously struggling to find my room, and eventually I had to agressively scream, "COULD YOU DIRECT ME TO MY ROOM PLEASE?!?!!!" to get remotely any kind of help or assistance in a situation where I was clearly struggling finding where my room was at. The guest service here is straight up appalling. Staying here isn't any sort of upscale experience either. Honestly, some hotels are run by bad people, and it couldn't be more clear that some sort of set up or something was planned for me here. Call me crazy all you want to. I've been alive long enough to see a setup for what it's worth. I've made a whopping 200 off of my companionship services and that is terrible given the investment I have made to profit large out here. I've lost money and that is highly suspicious indeed given my phone line is usually blowing up 24/7 round the clock. I informed the hotel representative that I would not like chocolate truffles brought to my door the first day, and they did anyways. I was expecting a fridge full of soda and alcoholic beverages to choose from, and got 3 cans of soda and a fucking fiji water. Im going to stay in the cheapest dump I can from now on if this is what you get for 300+ Don't bother staying here. Its a bunch of hype. read more

My wfie and I stayed at The Hotel Donaldson on a Saturday night. This is a small hotel with something like 18 rooms in all. Each room was designed by an artist and has their own "look". The rooms have exposed brick and beams, and a number of windows with blinds and darkening/quieting panels. Our room was very large. Walking in, we had a wet bar on the left and on the right was a pathway to the bathroom, with a closet on one side (with robes) and vanity area on the other side. The bathroom had a pocket door which was a first for me to see at a hotel; heated floors; glass shower. Back to the main room, the bed was large, very comfortable with ample room surrounding the bed. The room also included a desk & chair, a couch, chair, table and a TV mounted in the corner. A nice touch was a hospitality hour for guests that included free beer, wine, soft drinks, fruit, cheeses, etc. on the second floor sitting area. Also, when checking in, you receive a room service order card to hang on your door. While they were numerous and reasonabled priced food items, guests also have the option to just have a tray of coffee & hot water delivered in the morning with a basket of baked goods. We had other things going on so we didn't have time to enjoy the rooftop hot tub. The hotel also houses a nice restaurant where you can expect entrees in the $25-$45 range if I recall. The HoDo Lounge is a beautiful bar and was hopping that evening. The Fargo Film Festival happened to be going on in town at that time so the lounge included some visiting film celebrities mingling with the locals. There is something about the HoDo Lounge in that I never want to leave. From the overall experience, this was my best hotel experience ever. A close second is The Jefferson Hotel in Richmond, VA. I can't wait for a good excuse to stay at The Hotel Donaldson again. read more

Well, started out good. Very nice, room is good size. Nice layout . The issues- 1 smells like a pet was in this room 2 hair on the shower wall 3 fan doesn't stay running. Room gets stagnant quickly. 4 air has to be really low temp to turn on. 5 two of the electrical outlets don't work 6 three towels for a room that accommodates 6 Biggest thing was the smell. It is bright, clean, unique, artistic, beautiful, welcoming, urban, convenient, friendly, accommodating...do you get it yet? I can keep going... Okay, even the workout facility is unique and awesome. They have boxing gloves and a bag. I mean, that is awesome. Rough day at work? Come on "home" and box it out! The HoDo Lounge is phenomenal, the breakfast in the morning- complimentary pastries and coffee- and other options for food- delivered to you within a half hour window that you choose? Perfect The Lemon Souffle Pancakes are the highlight of my week sometimes when I'm in Fargo! The beds are perfect. You can buy them- but how would I get it back to Ohio? I love the lighting- the mini bar is totally raid worthy- I have to reign myself in so I don't buy it all. HAVE I MENTIONED THAT THERE ARE TRUFFLES with your turn down service? Yeah. AND THEY ARE GOOOOOD. Local art- awesome. Wine and Cheese hour? Yes, please! As if you needed any more of a reason? Well, the prices are fairly comparable to any chain hotel- a difference of maybe $20-30 if you book ahead of time. They have their own rewards program, too! Had an excellent stay at Hotel Donaldson. The hotel bed was one of the most comfortable beds I have ever slept on. Staff were extremely courteous, friendly, and helpful, providing complementary happy hour and bedtime turndown service with chocolate. We had an early morning and they delivered coffee and pastries hours before breakfast was set to begin. The rooms display different pieces from local artists which makes each room unique. It is located in the heart of downtown Fargo which makes it easy to walk to shopping, restaurants, and the river path. Would definitely stay here again! read more

It's been a while since my stay at the HoDo in Fargo, but I still remember every vivid detail...from the the soft music playing when you entered to the room to the delicious chocolate truffles they would leave bedside every night. But my favorite aspect of this boutique hotel had to be the artwork specifically chosen for each, very spacious room. It's as if each room is its own gallery hosting some seriously good art. There's even a booklet in the room that provides the artist's bio and and concept behind the art. It's certainly a testament to how unique this hotel is, if each room is curated differently. The free wine and cheese hour every evening wasn't a bad touch either. The hotel is also home to one of Fargo's hippest bars and restaurants, the HoDo Lounge. If you've got the change and have plans to visit the friendlies place ever, Fargo, North Dakota - then by all means - this is the way to do it. read more

We love this hotel! The front desk staff, Jesse and Noah were extremely friendly and accommodating. We arrived at 5:45 pm on a Friday and they were having their happy hour, which consisted of cheeses, fruit, crackers, bread, wine, beer and sodas. Even though happy hour was only until 6:00 we sat down at 5:55 and they replenished the wines. There's only seventeen rooms in the entire hotel and every one is different. Ours reminded me of a downtown NYC studio apartment. It was so artsy and funky. The toiletries were AVEDA - very fancy. The valet option for your car is convenient, but not really necessary on a weekend, as there was lots of parking available downtown. The location is great - right across the street from the Vinyl Taco, a really good Mexican restaurant. As well as walking distance to coffee shops, restaurants and bars. The HoDo Lounge downstairs was great for after dinner drinks. We had breakfast in the HoDo Restaurant and both the food and service were great. Their included free in-room breakfast is limited to coffee, tea and pastries, but you can order off their breakfast room service menu. There's lots of breakfast options and coffee shops within walking distance from the hotel though. The hotel has some really nice features like a turn-down service with truffles and a really well stocked mini bar. We will definitely go back!!! read more

My girlfriends and I planned a weekend at the Hotel Donaldson. It was everything we imagined and more! The HoDo is a cozy gem in downtown Fargo. We enjoyed the wine and cheese social hour and met others that were also staying there. The desk staff was courteous and went above and beyond to make sure our stay was a 5-star experience. I would recommend this beautiful hotel with unique artwork in every room to everyone I know. We spent a lot of time in our room just hanging out and visiting. Stayed with the family for one night on our way home from holiday family visit. Hotel is doing a great job of following Covid-19 protocols and recommendations, but still bending over backwards to provide amenities and top-notch, personalized service. The restaurant and bar were closed at the time of our stay, and the social aspect of the evening happy hour was suspended, but they still put out beer, wine, soft drinks and snacks at happy hour, offered house-made truffles you could pick up at bedtime (in lieu of turndown service) and gave us a card to fill out for complimentary continental breakfast, brought to the room. Kristen checked us in and ensur. ed we enjoyed the evening happy hour. On check-in, she asked what time we might want our car in the morning, then made sure it was brought around and kept out front until we were ready for it. She brought us our breakfast in the morning. And she even made sure to set aside a chocolate chip scone for our kids, because she thought they might particularly like that. Hotel is cool - rooms are well-appointed with unique original regional artwork and very comfortable with lovely sitting areas and luxurious beds. Walking the neighborhood to check out local shops and restaurants is awesome. Stay here if you get the chance! read more

It was a great gift because we knew we both would love it! We live in Fargo but rarely go downtown so it also kind of neat to stay downtown once in a while and hit up a few of the bars down there and not have to worry about getting a ride home! Hotel: Best I've ever stayed in. Booked for 2 nights over my wedding - each room is unique and designed/decorated by a local artist. I highly recommend the Waterfall Suite which has a jacuzzi tub in which the water fills from the ceiling. Is about 400+ square feet. The bed was like clouds - the are made from the local "comfort king" and I'm ordering one! Sheets are amazing. Cute little breakfast in the lobby in the a.m. All for $200 a night! read more

the best place we have found. out of chicago,london,minneapolis. The hodo from the bar to dining to the hotel, no penny is spared. They truly understand and practice something unique. When i think of this place i can only thing positive and warm. Thank you for being such a great staple in Fargo's society! the most comfortable beds and hospitable staff i have ever met.
