What an amazing place!! The staff is so nice and they offer so much about things to do in Fargo. There are super themed items from the movie Fargo that's so cool, many photo opts. They even have a celebrity walk of fame along the grounds. I totally recommend stopping by this visitors center. Best of all, if it's your last state to visit in the USA, they give you a T-shirt and certificate and have a huge photo opt in the wall and a sign with a 50 to take a pic with. It was a seven-time Academy Award nominee and prominently featured a scene with a woodchipper to dispose of a murder victim's body. Well, the Fargo-Moorhead Visitors Center has not one, but two woodchippers on site for some interesting photo ops. The original woodchipper that appeared in the movie is outside the building and a replica is inside for some wonderful family photos. A fact sheet I saw in the Visitor's Center revealed the "recipe" used in the movie to simulate the blood in that famous (but very gory) scene. So, for the benefit of the curious Yelper community, here it is: 1 large jug of RV Anti-Freeze 2 packages of red Kool-Aid 1 box of Strawberry Jello 1 garbage bag of butcher shop leftovers OK, so now that you've stopped gagging, let me share what else you'll find at the visitor center. Outside the building is a very cool and very large Buffalo statue painted in a crazy quilt color pattern, and the Fargo Walk of Fame where "movie stars, musicians, authors, athletes, religious leaders and celebrities" carved their names and pressed their handprints into wet concrete sidewalk squares. Some of the squares I saw were from the bands Alabama, Jethro Tull, and Def Leppard. Inside the center are an eclectic mix of displays -crop seeds of North Dakota, a wood puzzle map of North Dakota counties, hundreds of tourism brochures and books, post cards, posters from the Fargo movie and TV show, T shirts, a sports display (North Dakota is crazily mad about hockey), and free coffee. My favorite T-shirt proclaimed, "A lot can happen in the middle of nowhere". The building itself is gorgeous with a pretty mural on the second floor, a very high ceiling, a four-story high peak, and ornate wood trusses tied together with iron rods. Most definitely worth your while to drop by and spend a half hour or so cruising around and thinking up fun ways to get that woodchipper into a cherished family portrait. read more

I'm so glad I stopped here. I actually walked from the zoo! The lady working really helped me out. I stayed for a while and looked at the Fargo visitor and mural map. I then came up with a game plan for the rest of the day. Since it was pretty chilly outside I enjoyed a complimentary cup of coffee while looking over the maps as well. There is a replica woodchipper outside but inside the visitors center is the actual official woodchipper from the movie. You'll know it's legit because the one inside has autographs from the Coen Brothers who made the movie Fargo that starred William H. Macy and Steve Buscemi and Frances McDormand. And once you've gotten those pictures out of the way, the visitor's center has a super clean restroom, free coffee and all the brochures about the area including the museums, the hotels and the attractions. This was a cute little visitor center at the border of Fargo, North Dakota and Moorhead, Minnesota. It is on the list of must go places in this area, recommended by friends. It was comical to see the woodchippers, located inside and outside the building from the movie Fargo. It was funny to finally visit this place and town that many back home have given me the nickname "Fargo" due to the way I talk similar to these people cause I lived in Canada and been to many cold places. I was able to mark this place and town off my bucket list! The lady that was working here was really nice and interactive. While at the woodchipper, she brought over the police warm hat and volunteered to take our pictures. It was cool to see the Fargo movie posters up on the wall and some of the other displays they have. The sports area was funny as it had a motto on the jersey... Fargo, North of normal. Lol . Also, on the Fargo movie poster, it says... A lot can happen in the middle of nowhere. This is too funny as well!!! They do have a little store items like shirts you can purchase here. The last item up on a wall to take notice of is if this is the last 50th state you have visited, you can take a picture and belong to "the club." This destination was one to cross off my bucket list upon my 5th visit to Fargo in five years. The obvious attraction is the woodchipper, though its not just any woodchipper. It is THE woodchipper used in the 1996 Academy award winning movie "Fargo" by the Coen brothers. Of course, there is much more to this center than the star attraction. There is a ton of information regarding city attractions and those of historical significance that Fargo-Moorhead employees give at no cost, as well as insightful tips to regional aspects from Fargo all the way to Grand Forks. The latter of which greatly assisted me when driving the 80 miles north on a sheet of ice to the Alerus Center during winter months. Of course, even if there was a small cost to enter, I think that it would be worth it. There is more to life than just a little bit of money (don't you know that?). One key point of note- for those that think the exterior woodchipper located on the front lawn is the infamous woodchipper that was aforementioned, I'm sorry to report that this woodchipper is a replica. Nonetheless, its good to look at and take pictures. Sadly, there was not any truecoat noticed on any of the additional visitor center features. And yet, here I am at the Fargo-Moorhead Visitors Center. And it was a beautiful day. read more

Visitor Center that has 2 or 3 friendly people that will help you with anything and so a good job of representing the Fargo-Moorhead Area. But what makes this place different from the thousands of other visitor centers in the US is the Woodchipper from the movie Fargo. Not sure if it's actually THE actual chipper but its fun to think so! Put on a dumb looking hat (supplied or bring your own). And get your picture taken. Yes ND may be the least-visited state. But maybe we can get the word out and change that. Granted, this will make the "get off my lawn" crowd cringe. For those expecting a run-of-the-mill off/on interstate rest stop which often get called a "visitors center", this will blow your mind. Yes the wood chipper. But hidden feature is the Hollywood Star walk you'll see along the way. Check out many cult-classic names you long forgot but will be glad to remember. Enjoy a shaded picnic lunch if it's summer and not sub-zero outside. The museum highlights all the amazing-ness that is Fargo cinema. Allow for an hour; we stayed longer and it was fun. We came here when we drove into Fargo. Fargo is the first city right over the border. What better place to attend then the welcome center for North Dakota. When you drive up, there is a colorful bull in the lawn, a movie set copy of the wood chipper of the wood chipper used in Fargo the movie and the celebrity walk of fame for Fargo. The walk of fame to me is cute considering I've been to the real one in Los Angeles. When you walk inside, the place has some cute movie things from the movie, the script, hat, the real wood chipper used and etc... The people and the front desk were very nice. They gave me a pin to pin where we came from. We ended up buying a shot glass and magnet. It was a very nice welcome. read more

Stopped in here to check out the visitors center - they have a multi-colored bison out front, and a sealed wood chipper outside to represent the movie, and a lot of memorabilia and scrips, etc. for those who loved the movies and TV shows to enjoy. The building itself is designed as a large barn, but the inside reveals a tourist center and a few offices on the second floor. There are many pamphlets of the local stores and sights, and the ladies there can help direct your attention if you tell them what you want to see or do. They have restrooms and a large set of parking spots for buses/trailers and the cars. read more

I feel like I'm writing a review about a laundromat here, but whatever. This place was probably in the top 25 visitor's centers I've ever been, hands down. To see something actually used in the movies, and then accompanying paraphernalia from the set was just cool. I know, it doesn't seem like a very cool thing, but it is. You're encouraged to interact with the wood chipper too! They even have hats in the back that people wear while feeding Steve Buscemi into his transformative state! I didn't do the hat thing though, because I'm an adult with responsibilities and many books at home - I've got prospects. I couldn't be seen with some silly prop on, pushing a foot into a machine - come on. Outdoors surrounding the faux chipper in the yard, dozen's of passing celebrities have immortalized their imprints in concrete patches throughout. I saw Metallica, and many other prominent people - I'd definitely have a jaunt around that Fargo/Hollywood walk of fame. Overall, it do it over, and I wouldn't change a thing. It was worth a stop. WE HAD TO COME GET A PICTURE WITH THE WOODCHIPPER!!!!! Def felt like tourists coming here and we learned that so many ppl from Fargo hated the movie...whoops.. well whatever, I liked it! Gorgeous building and easy to access, with friendly staff that helped up to look up some skiing/snow mobiling and other outdoor activities we were crazy enough to get ourselves into during the -10 weather. We took a pic with the woochipper from the movie, saw and read the script signed by the cast and sat down to enjoy a cup of coffee while browsing thru some touristy/local pamphlets on things to do. I only stopped here (Fargo) in order to join the "Best for Last" Club. The staff was friendly and helped me celebrate my 50th State Capitol with a photo and queries about my various visits. When I planned this trip (Helena & Bismarck) I'd never realized that it took me 33 years to complete my tours. What a fun accomplishment! I stayed just a brief bit, collecting a t-shirt and registering for a really savvy marketing ploy of "best for last." Kudos to North Dakota for coming up with an idea to celebrate their status as the 50th rank state when it comes to tourism. We were in Fargo for less than a day but our time there was the highlight of our trip. The visitor center was a great time and everyone there was so kind and friendly. We took photos with the wood chipper and a worker was explaining it to people that were not familiar with the movie. They also have hats that are similar to those worn in the movie that you can wear for your photo opt. The small gift shop was well stocked and we found a magnet to buy. We drove 8 1/2 hours out of our way to visit North Dakota, and cross the 50th state off my dad's list. What began as an obsessive compulsive chore, quickly turned into a really great experience when we arrived at the visitors center. I was excited to see the wood chipper, my dad was thrilled that we had two adult drivers and fun conversations in the car, but the big surprise was the "best for last" club and incredible customer service we experienced upon arrival. Aside from a huge assortment of traditional maps, brochures, and catalogs, they have the original wood chipper from the movie Fargo, and an enthusiastic and knowledgeable staff. On our way out, she cheerfully told my dad not to feel guilty for saving North Dakota for last, she thanked us for coming, and gave us a great recommendation for dinner. Very disappointed. Dropped in on Fargo this weekend as part of my 50 states bucket list, and wanted to visit the Visitors Center which I'd seen mentioned in the Wall Street Journal!!! I called ahead and the recording said they were open Sundays 10 to 6. So I took an uber out there from downtown on Sunday afternoon and ... They were closed. So I got to stand out front and freeze for 10 minutes while I waited for another uber to rescue me. I realize now from their website that they have different seasonal hours but seriously, guys, update your phone message when your schedule changes.
