For a luxury hotel, it isn't all that. Even though we live in Brookline, my husband and I decided to spend two nights at Hotel Commonwealth after our wedding, because we love Eastern Standard, and because we wanted some good sleep and to not have to share the bed with cats for a change.
First: we ordered a cheese plate to be waiting in our room after our check in the first night, since we were a little afraid we wouldn't get to eat much at the wedding. Since it was around $18, I was figuring we'd probably get around three decent chunks-- nothing too big, but a good and fatty snack.
The cheese plate was one SMALL wedge or brie, some pinenuts in honey, and a half bottle of red wine. I actually laughed at it. It was ridiculous. Luckily, the in-room mini bar had pringles to supplement our snacking.
Second: the internet is free for the first day, pay for after that. I sort of expect wifi to be standard at all decent hotels these days. The internet is also horribly SLOW. Being the nerd I am, while we were scarfing our pringles I spent a very frustrating time trying to get onto facebook so that I could update our statuses and my new name. The next day when I was "napping", I actually gave up trying to look at wedding pics friends had posted because it was so slow.
Another sad, though not super important point, is that there's no in hotel spa, not even a hot tub or steam room. I mean, that's a very very small thing, but I guess its something I do expect the fancy places to have. The conceriege was awesome though-- when I asked him, he started reccomending places on Newbury (which I said I wasn't interested in, since I really didn't want to leave the hotel), and ended up sending me a bottle of wine, which he totally didn't have to do, but which I really appreciated.
Also sneaky: in addition to the regular freebie shower stuff in the bathroom, there is a plate of other showery type stuff. One would assume it isn't free, and indeed there is a price list, if you look for it, but it isn't obviously noticeable, and it is waaaay overpriced. I could see someone naive or drunk grabbing the sugar deodorant before realizing its over $10.
So now you're probably wondering what I liked about the place.
The bed and the pillows were SUPER comfy. I could have slept in them forever, but I didn't because they made me feel shockingly well rested! (and then an hour later, my lack of sleep caught up with me and I went all tired-face during brunch.) The room were were in was also huge, and had a bed area separated from a sort of work and lounge area with a couch, desk, and chairs by a curtain. This was awesome, because I was tired the second night, and my husband pulled the curtain so that I could fall asleep, and he could do things at his computer on the other side without keeping me up. The couch was also super comfy and made a nice lounging place so I didn't have to hang out soley on the bed which is a HUGE feature to me.
The room also had two flat screen tvs, one for watching from the bed, and one for watching from the couch. We didn't use either, but I figure that's a pretty good feature if you're into tv or have dvds you want to watch!
I also just really liked the aesthetic of the room. It was very old fashioned and lovely, with cute green cabinets and nice details. read more
