This hotel was a great bargain when we stayed here for 3 nights in Aug. It is located right on the main plaza so it is close to the markets, eateries, bookstores, movie theater and coffee spots. We got a room with a full and twin to accommodate us and our 2 year old. The bathtub is an experience. I don't ever recall ever showering in a clawfoot bathtub with a shower curtain going all the way around. Coupled with the fact that the shower head spits out water full force and then the shower curtain sticking to my body felt like I was being swallowed by the bathtub. The next two nights weren't too bad while showering. I learned my lesson in adjusting the water temp and pressure before getting in. The room was a little muggy so we kept the window open all night. Unfortunately one night I woke up to guys talking very loudly outside the bar next door. There is no refrigerator or microwave in the rooms. There is free wi-fi and pets are welcome to stay. I would definitely stay here again. It is a great bargain and has a great feel to it despite it's small inconveniences. read more

As a hotel, a place to sleep it gets one star. My friend and I stayed here. It's an Arcata hotel. If you are a hippie, a college student, or not bothered by staying at a no tell motel, you won't mind this place. The only bonus is that it looks like the hotel in the movie The Shining with Jack Nicholson. Seriously, it's a beautiful and historic building that badly needs an investor to do a deep clean. NOT a remodel or upgrade, a DEEP CLEAN and maybe new wall paint and fabrics. (Use Kilz primer-sealer to seal all that old funk smell in! It works on smoke damage and mold) We stayed on 8- 27-18. First in room 222. Smelled like a smoker had been living there for 25 years. Even after we left the windows open for 15 minutes and the fan on high. The bed covers were sticky feeling. The guy at the desk was super great and super cool so he gave us another room on the inside, 225. Smelled musty but no cigarette smoke. We opened the windows - which opened up to the inside roof with a snazzy rock mural. Didn't leave them open because anyone from the other rooms could walk right across and into our room. I check for bed bugs everywhere. I checked here too. Covers off and thrown into the corner. bed one...hmmm no bed bugs - WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?!? Coffee, tea, or cum? We told ourselves it had to be tea. Why didn't the maids see this? Is this the bedding from the LAST guest??? Bed two cover off and thrown into the corner...no bed bugs. Just giant dust Rhinos. The place is filthy and the excuse that the place is old is complete bull crap. CLEAN THE ROOMS. Our room was completely quiet because it was on the inside. Bathroom door did not close completely so if you had to drop the kids off at the pool we had to wait until one of us was asleep. Neat historic architecture. Needlessly run down and dirty. I hope someone comes in and saves it. My traveling companion refused to let me complain about the room because I already made us switch out of the first gross sticky one. We loved our stay at the Hotel Arcata. I appreciate that they have maintained the historic charm of the building. The location is fantastic. We enjoyed walking to restaurants and shops. The staff were friendly and helpful. There was some noise but that is to be expected in such a central location. Our 3 year old daughter was with us and she slept through the noise with no problems. We were a little concerned about the parking since we were traveling and had a lot of stuff but it was no problem at all. We found a parking spot on the plaza and had no concerns. Of course we removed valuables from our car. We will definitely stay here again. read more

Very quiet and quaint! The old history of this place lingers on every wall from historic photos to the rounded architecture of the early century. This place was a great sleep, checked the beds and NO tiny crawling visitors! Great deal for a one nights stay. All plugs and most appliances worked. Only complaint was there was no fridge in the room and the furnace wasn't an easy turn on situation but the blankets kept warm all night! Breakfast was served downstairs, nothing fancy but they had a variety of milks, breads, teas and coffee. I advise getting there early because coffee runs out quick here. There's also a coffee spot directly across the street on the corner so worst case scenario you have to walk 12 extra steps for coffee. Friendly greeters and clean room, I would stay here again given the chance. read more

Stay Away for your own health and safety and that of your loved ones. Night employee repeatedly not wore mask when in contact with us first bad sign. Second our room was dirty had used dirty towels. Used blood stained sheets on bed. Employee repeatedly told us that the hotel would make things right tomorrow. His expectation was that we'd stay in a dirty biohazard room during a pandemic that even if a pandemic wasn't going on there's blood on the sheets. Then when I unsurprising go to check our and return the keys the employee then took the time to insult and curse at us. It's in clean and unsafe to stay here. It's cute but deadly along with horribly unprofessional staff on top of their horribly unprofessional cleaning and health and safety practices during a pandemic let alone any point of time. read more

Just got home from 3 nights in Arcata looking for an apartment for our sons who will be going to school there. We stayed at the Hotel Arcata as we have in the past (not many choices). We enjoyed our stay and were welcomed by a very friendly & helpful desk clerk. The guy who worked in the morning was not as friendly. Yes, the noise was a bit much but we knew what we were getting ourselves into staying on the square side of the hotel. My biggest suggestion is adding some mini fridges & microwaves to the rooms - would really help! read more

We stayed here for 1 night and so glad we did. If you are looking for great kind and friendly staff in a cool historic hotel, you will be happy here. Yes it's over 100 years old and we found it charming, spacious and clean! The location can't be beat if you like to walk to coffee shops, restaurants, and shops. The king bed was so comfortable, we slept well. The antique odor may be an issue to those of you used to the new car chemical smell of big chain hotels. Was not an issue for us at all. The windows open nicely so it's easy to enjoy the fresh forest air. I look forward to our next stay. If COVID cleanliness and distancing is a thing for you, you'll be happy here. We stay at this spot often. I was my favorite hotel in town. We stayed recently for two nights in rooms 309 and 310. My husband was bitten by bed bugs. When we reported it ... it took them 4 days to verify with me that they had someone come look, meanwhile guests were still staying there. They blamed it on fleas, of course no hotel wants to admit they have bed bugs. The bites are in the classic line and zig zag patterns that are associated with bed bugs and occurred at night time (see photos). The hotel refuses to refund us and says they don't believe us. Of course they claim the pest company said they don't have them.If ANYONE leaves a hotel stay with bites like these, the manager should be very alarmed and sympathetic. Sherry the manager actually accused us of lying, and refused to compensate us in anyway. Hung up the phone on me and is not professional. read more

KEEP DRIVING. Don't stay here if you want to sleep. I'd give the hotel itself a better rating, as I don't mind 'quaint', although the peeling paint, cigarette burned bedspread, and nasty carpet did get my notice. While the hotel has a great location on the square downtown, it's also the hub of dumb*ss activity (and a vital drug scene) in the evening. I probably did actually sleep, but not between 2-5 am! I did get to hear every single shouted conversation, and super-awesome dipsh*t revving their engine as the burned rubber leaving the square...do yourself a favor and keep driving. Stayed here because it is on the plaza and wanted to be close to the farmers market. I stayed with my wife and teenage son. It was not pleasant. The rooms are small and the walls are thin. We heard our neighbors until after 1am and they started again at 5am, and that doesn't include the bar next door. The bar was quiet by comparison. The bathroom doesn't have room for anything. The sink is in the room. Breakfast was disappointing. The hotel has the potential to be a cool old fashioned stay, but it comes off just old and dirty. read more

We were facing AWAY from the bars, and still couldn't sleep each night until about 2am when they closed and the patrons cleared out. Amazed at the amount of homeless in front of the hotel each night. Beware when staying here. I stayed for one night and had a very upsetting experience with the staff. When I asked where to park they directed me to the side streets as this hotel does not have its own parking. After I parked I asked if the spot/area was safe as I noticed some glass on the ground and was worried about theft. The employee assured us the location was safe and not to worry. When I woke up, my car window was smashed and all of my belongings were gone. I addressed the situation with the new morning staff and they had no advice for me other than to get a hold of the police and then admitted that break-ins were actually becoming more frequent in the area which they did NOT tell me when I asked the night before. When I called the police and told them where I was parked (right next to the hotel) the police commented that they were not surprised that's where the theft took place. I am very frustrated that I was misled and lied to about the safety of my car, and now am forever missing my belongings. If you are staying here please find a safe area to park your car away from the hotel. Management should make a new policy to be more truthful to their guests. We stayed here back in June 2019 for the weekend. Although we liked the ambiance/old hotel feel, there were things that definitely took away from the overall enjoyment. The beds are extremely uncomfortable, and need major updating along with the bedding. You will wake up sore and not feeling rested. The alley at the back of the hotel is where the garbage bins for the bars are located. Needless to say it's extremely loud through out the night/morning and you will hear everyone out there screaming/talking and smoking. The smell of the food/sushi overwhelms you as you walk down each hallway from the restaurant on the first floor. I wouldn't recommend staying there again unless the hotel does some updating or your ok with being next to bars and are just looking for a hotel to crash after bar hoping. read more

I like to travel cheap. I don't like fancy rooms, and definitely nothing that cost more than what I make in a day. I despise frills and extraneous details when all I need is a bed, a window, and a shower. Money should be spent exploring the area I'm visiting, not unloaded on a room that I plan to spend most of my time in with my eyes closed. This is why I like Hotel Arcata. The rooms are small, minimal, and clean enough. The small claw-foot tubs are cute, the street noises remind me that small as Arcata is, it still has people residing in it, and the pictures on the wall frighten me in a way that brings excitement to my dreams (for example: the black and white photograph of the indigenous girl and boy outside my room threatened my sleep with images from the too many horror movies I watched as a child). But, when the morning comes, I pack up my things, grab a muffin, coffee, and OJ from the breakfast they provide, and hit the road. Plus, it's conveniently located. You walk out of your room and you have your choices of bars and restuarants. Not too bad considering you're in the middle of nowhere. read more

Someone else made and paid for my reservation and when I got there I wanted to add my dog. they helped me with no problem. They allow dogs of all sizes Close to downtown...walking distance to everything Tomo is downstairs and they have awesome sushi! Cons: Oh jeez. Ok. Fleas...if you are going to allow dogs please make sure the rooms are treated regularly For some reason the room was ONE MILLION degrees! The heat was not on, I don't know why it was just crazy hot. Had to sleep with the window open With the windows closed OR open, the noise just echos straight up from the bars down below. You will hear alllllll manner of fights, drunk people ramblings and just random people from the plaza yelling, screaming, laughing, puking, singing and cursing. The room was dirty. There was long blonde hair (look at the picture of me) alll over the place...on the covers, on the night stand, on the pillows...everywhere. also, there was a dirty wash cloth hanging in the shower. When I say dirty I mean DIRTY...like the wash cloth was BROWN...I don't even wanna know. Would not stay here again. I'd rather stay at the Fairwinds. read more

I give this hotel two stars, but I have to say there is both good and bad here. The good is quite good. The bad is, well, bad. First: good. The sushi place is awesome. Great food, and they actually brought a carry out order to my room. They even loaned me a wine key for wine not purchased from them. More good: the people at desk were great. And the interior public spaces are very nicely restored including some reproductions of old photos of the area. The bad: the room was terrible. Bad bed. Awful pillow. Crappy furniture. No dresser! Four hangers in closet. No HVAC. The actual room was crap. Location is both good and bad. Good in that it's close to nice dining options. Bad in that Arcata has a serious homeless and panhandling issue and quite a few very sketchy people outside bars. Also I was awakened twice at around 3 AM by fights/screaming outside. read more

The Hotel Arcata: in fancier towns it'd be called a boutique hotel. It certainly is unique, but that's what I look for when I travel. It's right on the square, which is both incredibly convenient and (sometimes) incredibly noisy. They say rooms in the back are quieter. I got a nice large room in the back, with a HUGE bathroom sporting a clawfoot tub/shower. I was happy to have the extra large bathroom because I was traveling with a pair of cats. That's right! The Hotel Arcata is pet-friendly. I don't think they even charged me a pet deposit. I'd recommend it for that alone, but I found the hotel, location, and staff to be charming and welcoming. Several good restaurants within a short walk, a movie theater, several bars if that's your thing...nice. Everyone's got a Motel 6 and a Best Western; only Arcata has the Hotel. read more

This is a mediocre hotel trying to pass as a fancy, classy old historic hotel. The space itself is old and historic, but the business seemed to have gotten lazy over the years and lacks a sense of prestine and care. Given my experience at a chain hotel a little outside of town, its hard to say which is a better bet. Not much to choose from in a town the size of Arcata, but not sure this is worth the additional $30 as compared to the chain. Proximity to the Plaza is nice, however you can expect street noise until all hours of night. This is Arcata. The town is full of transients and drug addicts and trustafarians. Not necessarily the businesses' fault that these people ruin the entire atmosphere of the city. Picking this hotel will depend on how much you want to be immersed in this. More likely than not, I'd be hard pressed to spend $100 to stay a night here again. read more

This Hotel was so cute and perfect for us since we had never been to Arcata before. It's located right in the heart of downtown making it easy to walk around, check out the shops and restaurants. Saturday morning there was a Farmers Market going on right out front of our hotel, so the location is perfect. It's a historic hotel meaning that you shouldn't expect the four seasons, the rooms are small. I however found no problem with the size I thought it was charming and cozy. The hallways are decorated with historic photos and the room had an awesome claw foot tub and great view. Staff was friendly and gave me a Birthday discount on the room. First, I have to say I'm biased because I love Aracta-cool, funky, friendly; everything some certain Northern California towns used to be before ithey became gentrified and full of themselves. Second, I've read all of the reviews and every one of them- good and bad- are true (Except the ones regarding cleanliness- I never experienced that) The two best things about this hotel are the location and the age/history. And, the two worst things about this hotel are the location and the age/history. My daughter lives a few blocks from here, and I typically stay here when visiting her. I am not picky-- all I want is a comfortable bed, a hot shower and no blaring TVs from other rooms. The noise from the square doesn't bother me at all. Not having AC is fine- the windows here actually open. The internet is not very strong, but it's workable. I've stayed in bad rooms here and I've stayed in good rooms. The last room I stayed in, the bathtub was leaking and they moved us to a really nice suite. So, this place isn't for everyone, and it is pricey when compared to a bland, perfectly clean, spotless chain motel on the boring side of town. My recommendations are only two: please provide hair dryers in the rooms, AND, a mini fridge to put milk in for in room coffee in the morning and wine at night. It's in the middle of everything, which is great because everything's right there, but "everything" includes 3 bars on the same block, only one of which wasn't super rowdy. It is a college town though, so that's not unexpected... We splurged for the larger suite with the extra lounge area and a king-sized bed. While highly amused that this room had more bathrooms and TVs than our apartment, it was really cold at night...maybe if we had found and used the extra heater earlier than we did it would have been more pleasant, but oh well. Anyway, it's really one of the only places in town to stay, and overall it's a nice place in one of the oldest buildings in town. Next time we're in the area we'll definitely stay here (though we might make reservations if we don't want the suite but want something bigger than a full-sized bed). read more

I stayed over Aug 15-17 for work. I picked this hotel for its great history and the fact that it is owned by a local Tribe. The hotel is conveniently located on the town square so food and beverages are easily accessible. Only down side to this is all the hippies that hang out, not to much pan handling but you might need to get use to pot/body order when walking down the streets. But really isn't that part of most of the North Coast towns. I loved that the bathrooms had claw foot tubs and the rooms were simple to keep the charm of an old hotel. I really liked all the pictures in the hallway with the descriptions, I learned a lot about the history of the area from the pictures. The people at the front desk were very helpful. Well except when we asked for ghost stories, the guy at the front desk just said he didn't believe in it. My co-worker said she smelled crayons in the elevator, so maybe the little girl ghost story is true. Overall it was just a comfortable hotel. read more

The Dude lived in Arcata for a spell, and the only time The Hotel Arcata came up was in giving directions to Tomo sushi restaurant, or trying to get his folks a room when they came to visit.. Obviously The Dude didn't need to stay there, he had his own place up the road on Park. But The Hotel is really quite lovely as The DUde found out recently when his paying job brought him to town. Conveniently located on the plaza, the street facing rooms can be a little noisy when the bars are closing, but not too bad. And Hotel Arcata is conveniently located right next to The Alibi, one of The Dude's favorite haunts in his former life. The rooms are simple and classic feeling, with a great sized bathroom and nice big claw foot tubs. The Dude was traveling with an adorable pup as well, and she was welcomed in the hotel, and the staff would play with her every time The Dude cruised through the lobby. Look, you might get a hotel that seems nicer in Eureka or up off Guintoli lane north of town, but you wont be able to match the classic style and location of Hotel Arcata anywhere on the North Coast. You can stay in a generic chain joint anywhere. In a nice little town like Arcata, stay in a nice little hotel like Hotel Arcata. The service is great, the location perfect, and the dollars stay in town to get spent again. Stop in next time you are cruising the north coast. And tell the The Dude sent you. Bonus for being on the Plaza and right next to the Alibi for stumble back to room factor. It's old and gorgeous with lots of character. The gigantic antique claw foot tub gets the place all 3 stars. It's not a soul-less chain; there is artwork and photos of peoples native to the area everywhere. Service was impersonal but decent. Temp to room impossible to control; if you have a thing about that it may annoy. To my mind it was kinda expensive, but I usually only stay top-drawer when someone else is footing the bill. I'll dish killer bills on good food, but a room is a room. Unless it has roaches! Which Hotel Arcata did not. This is a historical place in the center of town. It was built in the early 1900s. I find the facility very well maintained and tastefully updated. It has high ceilings, claw footed tubs that you can really take a bath or hot soak in and 12" base boards and period trim in stained wood. You cant find such furnishings in contemporary hotels. It is built solid so the sounds from around it - it is right on the city's square - are muffled. I've read some reviews complain about the noise around the hotel. Well, try one of the Rodeways or Best Westerns right on or next to the freeway. I've found the beds, chairs and TVs to be on par with the usual found in contemporary hotels. I'd give it another star if it had fancy beds with over stuffed pillows like a Hyatt or Hampton Inn. But then it would cost a bit more. I found that you can get a better room price if you ask for options and specials. Be sure to double check the price when you first arrive. Sometimes the computer will default to the standard price instead of the the one quoted. The times this has happened the staff have updated it. Happy lodging! read more

Because the location is perfect for visiting with family we decided to try this hotel again. To my amazement the experience actually went down. The rooms are still marginal with a horrible layout in the bathroom but this time it was the wildlife. During our stay we had birds & bats in the hallways. Seriously bats! This hotel needs a serious remodeling with heating and air conditioning controls in the rooms, bathrooms you can actually use, and maybe less wildlife on the inside. Next visit we will commute from Eureka...it is a shame since the location is great. read more

I recently stayed at Hotel Arcata this past weekend. I went to HSU some years ago and just never thought about ever staying there. But now as an Alum i needed a close hotel to downtown Arcata. I must say i was surprised at how well it worked out for me. I enjoyed the cozy feel and you can def. tell that its a tad bit old but it was def. worth it. Sure some remodeling would be nice for a few things here and there but honestly we enjoyed our stay there, the staff was very nice, the beds were cozy and good price range. Some things that were minor but didn't really appeal to me was how the pillows were a little flat, wallpaper was slightly coming off, and how there were a few people lingering outside late night but after a while they all left. I never felt worried about my safety. Nice and simple. Most likely going back to stay there again. = ) read more

This was great for me but it may not suit everyone. It's a historic building with all of the old charm retained. Claw foot tub, with copper shower head, old radiator for heat, tall ceilings, older carpet, large staircase, historic photos throughout the halls, long heavy drapes over the windows, right on the corner of the main square downtown and basically the only place to stay in the middle of small town Arcata. Cute, romantic hideaway type hotel. But think historic-romantic rather than luxury-romantic which it is not. We were here in late December 2007. Parked our red rental Mustang right in front on the square, dropped our bags, walked around the shops, had amazing Japanese food in the restaurant on the first floor, and snuggled up to bed with an odd warm feeling of historic ambiance meets young, hip modern world. Before we left, we found a redwood sapling in a plastic cone that a previous guest had forgotten behind the drapes on the window ledge. We were on a holiday road trip and this was a fun and memorable stop. I'd recommend to young couples passing through Arcata. read more

My husband and I stayed at the charming Hotel Arcata on our honeymoon roadtrip. We love Arcata's laid-back, leftie feel, and the hotel was exactly what we were looking for. It's located on the town's main square, within walking distance of lots of restaurants, bookstores, and bars. There's a sushi bar in the lobby. It has an old-fashioned feel that I really like. The lobby and hallways are quaint, but the rooms are quite plain and simple. It feels like you've been transported back to the 1920s -- clawfoot tubs and all. Except for the stoners occasionally wandering lost through the halls, that is. The staff was incredibly friendly. Our golden retriever loved his stay, too! read more
