I've been going here for a long time. I love the sales they constantly have going on. People who work here are super nice and helpful. The store itself is pretty organized, so it's easy to find what you are looking for. I've also learned to order online and pick up here for even more savings. If you see a short asian woman with straight dark hair and glasses working there, AVOID HER. Didn't exchange names but she stood out as she was rude and continued to follow my spouse and I. We were just casually browsing and she kept trying to butt into our conversations and called us dramatic for no reason and told us to go away (despite her coming up TO US). Unacceptable. When we had come back to browse again, she had said "oh, you guys are still here" in a disappointed tone. If the customer isn't responding to you and is actively moving away from you, take that as a sign to give space, not to keep pushing. Really disappointed as we like to occasionally browse here from time to time, now we just get overwhelmed by being followed by the employees. this lady with blonde hair, middle aged women kicked my friends and i out because she got so many complaints of us making a mess. guess what? we went in twice and we made no mess! the most we did was be a little loud and i would have left if she told us we were being too loud. but no kicked us out. we told her we were doing nothing. we also threw one plushy at another friend but we put it back and it wasnt a huge mess. they need ti have security cameras if they dont have them already. and they need to guve solid evidence that it was us. horrible way to handle accusations!!! read more

We placed an order online and had it shipped to the store for free. We never got an email notice that our order arrived. It's a good thing that the staff at this store contacted us via phone as a "last ditch effort to notify us of our order." I told the clerk that the phone call was the first time we heard our order was here because we never got an email. He said that happens often so they make it a policy to contact by phone to give customers a heads up. The 5 stars is for the reminder call. If I didn't get that, I wouldn't have known the order arrived. The store would have shipped the unclaimed items back to the warehouse. read more

This review is for Friday July 30th, 2021. I've been wanting to write a review of this location and it's manager, carrie, for quite sometime. Let me just put it out there that the manager has a pretty snarky attitude towards a lot of customers, others I've seen her interact with and myself. Ok with that out of the way let me get to the issue of today's review. I went to this location because I had 8 separate orders to picks up. There were plenty of people today because there was a Funko pop chase Figure release of 4 in which the family of 3 that camped out, father/mother/child got 1 each. Thank you for selling more than 1 chase to each family member in the household. So I ask d the associate there I'm here to pick up an order and I was told to wait because of the amount of people that needed help because of the release. I'm ok with this and I understand the reasoning. So I decided to purchase 2 Funko pops. Each pop was 12.50 but they had a promotion of buy 1 get another one 50% off. Cool so sorry purchase the items and get my order and I open my entire order to make sure the items weren't damaged. None were but in each box was a 10% off purchase coupon that you could use in person or online. I asked the manager if there was a restriction on the promotional offer that I purchase and she said no but I couldn't use that 10% off purchase coupon until next time. So instead of getting a price adjustment of 10% off my purchase that a lot I f managers in retail would do for me I decided to return the items I just purchased to another associate and walked out. I would go to the hillsdale location if I could choose but I live a little far away from there so unfortunately I have to go to this location. Probably one of the worst managers in terms of customer service I've experienced. read more

Seriously, nothing. While standing in line to pay, the cashiers didn't mind that I was waiting in line and allowed people to cut. When I asked "doesn't the line start here?", one of the cashiers said yes it does and didn't even care that I was already waiting in line and let someone else cut. I found myself wandering in here on a dark emo day. I needed black & white stripped socks. (Found 'em!) Hot topic is essentially your teenie bopper-emo-goth-rock-punk goods store. Goth with a splash of Hello Kitty, Nightmare Before Christmas with Care bears is the mood here! Shirts, undies, shoes, piercings, stickers, pins, bags, bracelets, socks, trinkets, cds, that sort of stuff. They currently carry limited edition 6" Domo-kun Flocked Vinyl dolls for $20 in sky blue, lime green, and true yellow. Only 500 of each were made! Man that monster has made it big! Otherwise there wasn't much help around, but when checking out the employee was very nice. The store as usual was a bit small, but clean & organized. It seems to me that these worker bees enjoy harassing customers that don't fit into whatever cheap fake "nerd" mall goth aesthetic they sell here. Every time I come in here with my parter (specifically THIS hot topic, not all of them), we are never greeted when we walk in (which I honestly don't care for) HOWEVER the employees do not hesitate to give us dirty looks, tell each other to follow us around the store, and passive aggressively ask us: "are you guys still doing okaaay?" I went there today to buy my usual 3-5 bottles of RAW deep purple. And as usual they told me they're out of stock. (lies) I asked them to check the back and they refused and then asked them if they could call Tanforan's Hot Topic and see if they had it. They refused again and then told me Tanforan was out of stock as well. I decided they were full of s**t and went home and called Tanforan myself. Not only was the super nice guy on the phone helpful and polite he went to check and told me they had plenty. I had him put 5 on hold for me to pick up tomorrow. I don't generally shop at Hot Topic, or at least try not to admit it when I do. Perhaps I identify myself to strongly with where I shop, and could not think to associate myself with the wear and personages of Hot Topic. There is nothing wrong with anyone who shops there, it just isn't me. Or so I like to think. The truth is, I love film and 80s cartoon reference. The occasional game shirt too. Hot topic has a ton of T-shirts adn hoodies that cater to this whim. I won't spend too much on it, but I'll snatch it up if it's a good buy. A clearance sale is the perfect place for that. 50% of 50% Reminds me of the good old days of the Urban Outfitters basement. Returning with a Snakes on a Plane bag (vicariously "Snakes on a Bag") for $7 and an elaborate full length flowing metal ring laced black jacket (perfect for Goth Night at the Marina) marked down from $90 to $30 makes this a happy venture. And if it get thumbs up from the girlfriend (whom I have to thwart daily from stealing my bag) I guess that's an added bonus. read more

My experience was so frustrating that I was this close to calling customer service, but instead I'll settle for writing a review. i came to return a shirt that my mom purchased for me. I carefully read the receipt to make sure I didn't need her debit card, because obviously I did not have it with me. It said NOTHING about refunding to the original tender. I work in retail so I know my rules. I come to this store to return my stuff because it didn't fit me. I ask if I need the card I bought it with and the female sales associate tells me I do. I told her that it doesn't state anything about it on the receipt. Her reply, "Well, how do you expect me to give you your money back?" WOAH, RUDE!! They definitely should have something about that on their receipts. How are customers supposed to know? Maybe they give cash back, like some places do. I did not appreciate her attitude. I went in looking for super hero patches for my kids. Two people helped me out. First employee was pretty cool. She said they didn't have any, but might have carried them in the past. Then she asked another employee about super hero patches. The second one had an odd attitude. She said they didn't have patches and I could decorate my jeans with some. (Way off topic) Then she said, "have you gone to San Francisco? They have a lot of patches on Haight St... or you can go to Pier 39 and get patch of a Trolley or patches of the Golden Gate Bridge" (remember, I asked for "super hero" patches)... I came in with my friend who was making a quick return and I soon found myself picking up a lil something for my bb...they have a pretty decent (not amazing! lol) selection of stuff, but are limited with their hats for men, which sucks, overall I would give them a 4 stars for their customer service and 3 stars for the selection. Yes, Hot Topic is pretty much the stereotypical "mallgoth" chain focused on pop culture and championing awful metalcore bands more often than my own Bauhaus and Joy Division fixes, but that said: This might be the best Hot Topic in the Bay Area. They often have great sales and clearances, in which I'll actually find a little something I could actually use, and for good prices (compared to other Hot Topics, full price or on sale...I don't very often find things I really want for my personal gawfic sensibilities). I can recall a pretty cool cap I got here for $1 I still use the heck out of. The staff who work here are very nice, very friendly, and very helpful with customer service. I bought a pair of skinny jeans here on clearance once... after a wash though, they were defective as the color faded with some odd streaks on them. I bought them back to another Hot Topic for return in East Bay and they were a bit difficult, wouldn't make the exchange, so I had to come back here and they were immediately very easy about it. The clearance sale (which was over) made the exchange rather complicated (and normally they don't do returns on them), but they did it in a very satisfactory and quick way, were very friendly and helpful, and I bought some new things as well with another clearance going on. read more

I have been having terrible experiences at this specific Hot Topic for far too many visits now regarding customer service and yesterday's experience was just one of the worst experiences to date. I came in to return an online purchase (a Nightmare Before Christmas dress, not a costume) that was too big. Little did I know the nightmare I had in store with the customer service they were about to give. This should have been a simple return as it wasn't a clearance item, or final sale item, or an online exclusive and 30 days have not passed since the purchase. The first person took 5 minutes looking confused at my receipt, not sure if he knew what item he was looking for. I'm not sure why though because everything else was Funko related and it was a short list. After 5 minutes he asked me if I had purchased the dress from Her Universe and if so that I would need to ship it back to them. I told him I purchased it from HotTopic.com and that's why I was in store to get a refund (and my receipt was from HotTopic). He then said he'd come back with someone and left to the back room and came back several minutes later with a girl. When the girl came she looked over the receipt and the item and told me it was a final sale item, which it most certainly was not. It wouldn't even make sense for a Nightmare before Christmas dress/ new item be on final sale 2 months BEFORE Halloween. That and my receipt didn't say it was a final sale item and the online listing showed it was still in stock and not in clearance or in final sale so what gives? Her explanation was that she (not me) received an email saying it was a final sale item. Well I didn't receive this mystery email, and I know the return policy: items purchased online can be returned to store under 30 days when unworn and not final sale or clearance, so I want my refund. We went back and forward on this whole "email" thing for several minutes. Eventually she said she couldn't help me and told me to step out of line and call customer service, which made no sense to me so I refused to step out of line because she hadn't helped me yet. What kind of solution is calling a 1-800 number when YOU ARE IN STORE. Her next explanation on why the dress was a final sale (different than her last) was because I had received a free Funko Pop because I had purchased $40+ in Funko Pops. That promotion had nothing to do with the dress but she was adamant that I could not get a refund because of that now. It would have made sense if the promotion was buy $40+ in merchandise but it was specifically for Funko Pops and not anything else, and I was not returning Pops, I was returning a dress. Then she actually told me I should not have even received the free Pop because I hadn't purchased $40+ in Pops, which I thought was strange because I'm trying to make a return on this dress not argue if I had purchased $40+ in Pops to get a free pop (which I did but they shipped separately but that's beyond the point). She went on about how I shouldn't have received this Pop, for what seemed for too long and when I brought up how I just wanted my refund again she just kept going about the unrelated Pops. Before I completely lost my sanity she offered me to exchange the dress value ($30 something) for something else in store. I don't know why this wasn't her 1st solution instead of telling me it was a final sale twice but since I didn't want anything I asked for a gift card with the amount the dress would have refunded for. I wanted a refund, and their refund policy says I can get one but was willing to be flexible and compromise for a gift card but she told me no. I legitimately didn't want anything in store that day but that was her final solution. At this point 30~ minutes have passed since I arrived at the cashier for the exchange, it's Friday night, and I just wanted to leave. It was pretty obvious I wasn't going to get my refund from this location because of "emails" and unrelated promos, and I wasn't getting a gift card with my balance because of unexplainable reasons, so my next course of action was to use the value of the exchange to pay for the people behind me. At least something good came out of this wreck for them, and after being argued with and given the evil eye from the girl for way too long it felt nice making someone else's day. After I left I called customer service to inquire why the store wouldn't give me a refund. Ivonne looked up the item and could not give me a reason why they would refuse my return and said they should have given me a refund. Ivonne from the 1-800 number was very nice. In the future I'll be sticking to Tanforan's Hot Topic, as they provide excellent customer service every time I've gone and always seem to be in a good if not great mood. read more

This branch has super cool and super friendly staff, and the best clearance T-shirt department of all the Bay Area branches (I've shopped and checked them all out on a regular basis). Ordered 14 of their shirts online, the size I got was SM = 40" chest size. When I received the item, the actual size is 36". I know it's no return, no exchange and what not BUT the size guide IS DECEIVING, felt I got ROB with $32 because now I will need to get still trinkets for my friends again BUT not with this store anymore.  Called the customer service and as if they gave me a favor of telling me to ship back the item but will have to shoulder the fee and they will give me back a refund. And the most hilarious thing when I talked to Donald, the customer service agent, he was telling me that it's because it's preshrunk so the size would be smaller - Guys, preshrunk or not, the actual size is 36 and what is written in your size guide is 40. read more

We came back a few days later, and she recognized us right away, which I always appreciate. She was tied up with another customer who we quickly realized was extremely difficult and overall irritating...but Kaitlin handled it better than I ever could have and never stopped smiling.
