Excellent bagels!!! Exactly how I like them! Crispy crunchy outside and soft inside with a generous amount of cream cheese. Old school place serving kosher bagels in a minimalistic and classic setting. I really came here to get a bialy but found out they only make them on Saturdays and Sundays. I'll definitely be back for more this weekend!

I came to Avenue U, to Hot Bagels and Bialys, as I received a tip that New York City's best bialys were here. While bagels are on every NYC street corner, bialys are the niche interest of a small coterie of fans, those of us that Mimi Sheraton chronicled in her book The Bialy Eaters: The Story of a Bread and Lost World, who crave them for their inimitable texture -- chewy exterior reminiscent of pizza crust, interior that evokes English muffin, soft and craggy, redolent with the sweet, punguent flavor of caramelized onions and poppy seeds, perfect foil for a shmear of butter. In the Old Country my mother's family hailed from the village of Tiktin, a part of Bialystok; they were followers of the Gerer rebbe. Which is to say that bialys are in my blood. As Tony Kushner wrote: "-- the ones who crossed the ocean, who brought with us to America the villages of Russia and Lithuania - and how we struggled, and how we fought, for the family, for the Jewish home, so that you would not grow up here, in this strange place, in the melting pot where nothing melted. Descendants of this immigrant woman, you do not grow up in America, you and your children and their children with the goyische names. You do not live in America. No such place exists. Your clay is the clay of some Litvak shtetl, your air the air of the steppes - because [your grandmother] carried the old world on her back across the ocean, in a boat, and she put it down on Grand Concourse Avenue, or in Flatbush, and she worked that earth into your bones, and you pass it to your children, this ancient, ancient culture and home. You can never make that crossing that she made, for such Great Voyages in this world do not anymore exist. But every day of your lives the miles that voyage between that place and this one you cross. Every day . You understand me? In you that journey is." In our current time, with the generation that experienced the Holocaust dying out, bialys are becoming increasingly rare in New York City and sadly I've observed a decline in quality. My friends, a bialy is not a soft onion roll like you get at Shelsky's. Hot Bagels and Bialys is a traditional, old school Brooklyn deli, no frills, but with a commitment to quality in evidence. A sign in the window advertises rabbinical supervision that is strict (!). Love that they give a shout out to Bialy in the name of the establishment itself. Bagels need not hog the spotlight all the time. The bialy I had here tasted super fresh, with a perfect texture -- great chew on the crust and soft, steamy delicate interior, delightfully salty and flavorful, dripping in melted butter. Good, yet too light on onion poppy seed topping for my taste. I also sampled a nice potato knish that was of the round pastry wrapped variety. Microwaving (on my request since I asked for it to be heated) ruined the texture but I suspect if you heat them in the oven at home they'll be great. Very nice creamy ice coffee that I sipped as I rode the F train away from Avenue U, Manhattan bound.

If you can make sense of this b.s., I'll buy you a dozen bagels from Zee Bagels.

So the owner, or whomever, wrote this illegible response to my review on Google. First off, I don't work here so it's not my responsibility to tell YOUR employees to put on a mask. Secondly, if your employee has emphysema, then he shouldn't be working in a hot environment, let alone working with food. Third, I wasn't being mean, scary or aggressive. If me, walking in, asking the employee why he isn't wearing a mask and then walking out 2 seconds later is considered "scary, mean & aggressive" then I'd hate for you to meet me and see me become all 3 things. Stop patronizing this place. Clearly the owner expects customers to work for him and tell his employees how to be aware of their surroundings rather than him being responsible for his own employees.

Literally the best bagel I have ever had - had one for breakfast and had to go back and get 6 to go back to North Carolina with me - I am amazed and the kindness of this guy and his staff especially since it's New York. And so reasonable - $1 a bagel?? Warm and yummy!

Flavorless bagels is one thing, man at the counter has no mask and zero regard for public safety in a food space is another. But the response to my google review is priceless. Validated every point I made by writing a short novel of a response.

As far as the customer service goes I wish it was a bit better. The staff aren't the most pleasant. No good morning no acknowledgement of comprehending what you order they just walk away and start the order. Which is why I double check always. I do notice they speak more pleasantly to other customers that come in. Not sure if it's a culture thing or could they be discriminatory but it's a bit unsettling. Food: 3.8/5 I only order the poppy seed bagel and that's pretty tasty. Not to doughy although I do have them take out a good portion of the bread because I like it to be extremely thin. Service: 3 /5 Service needs major improvements , language barriers are also a major factor to consider as they do speak Spanish and their primary language. Ambiance: 3/5 Standard & basic bagel shop set up. Standing & waiting area is basic they have counter tops should you want to stand inside and eat nothing fancy. They do have a wide variety of drinks to choose from and coffee and tea.

We wanted to try something different after having explored so many of the typical places in Manhattan and Shelsky's came highly recommended While I was expecting a long wait on a Saturday mid-morning, I was pleasantly surprised to find the establishment with only a few in line before us. Now, I was desperately seeking a very simple belly lox with schmear, but much to my dismay, they didn't have any more belly lox. I was heartbroken and had to figure out a plan B While I pondered, the family quickly ordered a Peter Shelsky, a Great Gatsby, and a Fancy Pants. I crumbled in my panic and jumped in with another Peter Shelsky. We also tried a small amount of whitefish salad and a beet/thyme salad The service was quick and we were able to grab two of the three small tables at the front to enjoy our fare. Soon we were digging in and from the immediate silence, I could tell everyone was enjoying their choices. The bagels were on the smaller side, denser with a firm crust. We did enjoy the bagels, but I could see how someone not familiar with this style may find them too "cardboard-y" I have to say, the pickled herring on the Peter Shelsky was fantastic, but was way too overpowering for the nova and sable. I actually regretted my choice and would order something more sunken next time. (Or get to the store earlier to beat the rush for the darn belly lox!) The beet salad was quite a nice balance to for the bagels adding a bit of brightness. The whitefish salad was solid - a hint of smoke and a creamy puree. Some who prefer a chunkier whitefish salad might find this less than satisfactory, but the flavors were great A cure store, friendly and patient staff, a great first exposure to Brooklyn for the boys. We'll be back (and we want belly lox!!)

It's a pretty spacious bagel spot with ample seating menu's with pricing for all items they sell which is helpful. Food: 3/5 I ordered a jalapeño bagel with turkey bacon, and scrambled eggs. The bagel was okay nothing to rave about your standard bagel. Nothing to make me fave about it. The texture was chewy and a bit doughy if you like your bagels that texture this may be the spot for you. Overall my bagel was about 10-12$ I believe. They charge extra for a rainbow bagel and other specialty bagels like jalapeño. Which is pretty expensive so make sure you're aware of that. Service: 3/5 The customer service was mediocre. The guy at the front wasn't the most pleasant. Very much get you in an out top of place. They weren't rude but not the most cheerful I'd say. Ambiance: 3/5 standers bagel shop nothing really impressive or spectacular. I will say when in the area due to the lack of places to eat that make REAL food.
