So I pass this little bagel store on my way to and from the marine park marsh. I saw the word Bialy, I miss all the bialy stores that were around when I was young. I love bialy's much more than bagels. They do have bialy's but only on the weekends. I was able to get one a few weeks ago and it was delicious! Light, with onions and poppy seeds in the center and great taste. Their bagels are excellent too. Not too big, a nice crunch to the outside and light but chewy inside. I was lucky to find a parking spot but unfortunately the bialys weren't delivered yet. I had a raisin bagel with cream cheese, it was delicious. I had to update my review to reflect that I finally tried the infamous sesame bagel that everyone in the store is always raving about and it definitely lived up to the hype. I also wanted to specifically mention the truly heartfelt and magnificent service by Augustine, who I finally got a chance to know a little bit better through our conversation yesterday. What an amazing human being. The owner is also very very kind and always greets us warmly. I initially came in yesterday to buy my mom an egg sandwich on a croissant, which is absolutely delicious and Augustine and Bruce (I believe this is the owner's name). make it perfectly every single time. It's so simple yet you'd be amazed at how many places screw it up. Not here. Everything is made with love and it shows. I bought the egg sandwich back home and then I went back out to get the sesame bagel as I could not stop thinking about it. There were a couple left in the display case and Augustine said if you wait two minutes, he'll give me one fresh out of the oven. How sweet is this man? I brought the sesame bagel home and put my own filling in which was pesto hummus. It was perfectly soft and a good chew on the inside and the outside had an abundance of sesame seeds with a perfect amount of crispiness, but not overly so. Phenomenal sandwich if I do say so myself. Excellent bagels!!! Exactly how I like them! Crispy crunchy outside and soft inside with a generous amount of cream cheese. Old school place serving kosher bagels in a minimalistic and classic setting. I really came here to get a bialy but found out they only make them on Saturdays and Sundays. I came to Avenue U, to Hot Bagels and Bialys, as I received a tip that New York City's best bialys were here. While bagels are on every NYC street corner, bialys are the niche interest of a small coterie of fans, those of us that Mimi Sheraton chronicled in her book The Bialy Eaters: The Story of a Bread and Lost World, who crave them for their inimitable texture -- chewy exterior reminiscent of pizza crust, interior that evokes English muffin, soft and craggy, redolent with the sweet, punguent flavor of caramelized onions and poppy seeds, perfect foil for a shmear of butter. In the Old Country my mother's family hailed from the village of Tiktin, a part of Bialystok; they were followers of the Gerer rebbe. Which is to say that bialys are in my blood. In our current time, with the generation that experienced the Holocaust dying out, bialys are becoming increasingly rare in New York City and sadly I've observed a decline in quality. My friends, a bialy is not a soft onion roll like you get at Shelsky's. Hot Bagels and Bialys is a traditional, old school Brooklyn deli, no frills, but with a commitment to quality in evidence. A sign in the window advertises rabbinical supervision that is strict (!). Love that they give a shout out to Bialy in the name of the establishment itself. Bagels need not hog the spotlight all the time. The bialy I had here tasted super fresh, with a perfect texture -- great chew on the crust and soft, steamy delicate interior, delightfully salty and flavorful, dripping in melted butter. Good, yet too light on onion poppy seed topping for my taste. I also sampled a nice potato knish that was of the round pastry wrapped variety. Microwaving (on my request since I asked for it to be heated) ruined the texture but I suspect if you heat them in the oven at home they'll be great. Very nice creamy ice coffee that I sipped as I rode the F train away from Avenue U, Manhattan bound. read more

A bit of a letdown here. Big bagels but they have absolutely zero taste. They are affordable and neat, but even the cream cheese and lox have no taste. The elderly gentleman who was behind the counter who prepared my sandwich was not covering his mouth and nose with a face covering, adding insult to injury. So the owner, or whomever, wrote this illegible response to my review on Google. First off, I don't work here so it's not my responsibility to tell YOUR employees to put on a mask. Secondly, if your employee has emphysema, then he shouldn't be working in a hot environment, let alone working with food. Third, I wasn't being mean, scary or aggressive. If me, walking in, asking the employee why he isn't wearing a mask and then walking out 2 seconds later is considered "scary, mean & aggressive" then I'd hate for you to meet me and see me become all 3 things. Stop patronizing this place. Whoa. I just ordered a toasted garlic bagel with cream cheese just to try this place out and I'm amazed at how delicious the bread was and the generous portion of cream cheese. ESPECIALLY since I ordered it at 7PM, when you would assume stores to have stale bagel. Now I know why the boss said no half off on bagels after a certain time when I asked her! We got a lot of bagel competitors around this area (Bagel boys, Zee's bagel, etc) with affordable prices as well but hot damn! I'm sold on this store...and it's kosher! read more

Best bagel shop in Brooklyn. This is coming from a self proclaimed bagel expert. Glad to have found this gem. The bagels are soft, fresh and chewy. Not overly doughy or burnt. Lots of choices with regards to bagel flavors as well as assorted cream cheeses and a decent price point, there is no reason this store shouldn't do well. Only wish they opened earlier then 7am . When they moved to the second location they changed management and the father/son issues caused the quality of the bagels to go downhill .. why change the recipe when it was working so well ??? They're the best bagels in the area and I believe the only Kosher bagels south of Avenue R.. Crispy and toothsome crust, chewy but light interior. Sounds simple but the simplest things are the easiest to get wrong. They used to be on/near Kings Highway. This is their new location and the bagels aren't baked in one batch in the morning, but rather freshly baked and restocked through the day. If giving less stars is possible I would. Went in on a Sunday and the line was out the door thinking that it's incredible that it's that good. No it's because there was only one man using one knife and a dirty rag to clean the counter and the knife, he was so backed up that he almost started a fire because the toasting machine got stuck and started burning the bagel. He was backed up and I feel for him. But on a Sunday where the majority of traffic is the busiest you have one person but I do not condone using the same knife to cut 5 different bagels with butter, cream cheese and other condiments, also a sandwich with mayo onions lettuce tomato, not only did not wipe the knife after each use but dropped the rag on floor and wiped the counter. There has to be a better way not to cross contaminate. I would rather go 4 more blocks to highway bagel rather than patronize this establishment again. I have been in this neighborhood for 40 + years and it is a travesty that this type of establishment passes the health dept rating and serves this to us. read more
