It was so good I spent the next few days going to gas stations, grocery stores and convince stores to try to find some to bring home. That led me to saying that it was only a 30 min drive out of our way on our long drive home. We stopped in and brought back a case trying almost every flavour we could. I grew up drinking HMS (many many bottles of soda) and continue to buy it to this day. My Dad made sure we had their Golden Ginger Ale for our Sunday dinner. Glad to see they still produce it. Their soda list has numerous options that include Orange Crush, pineapple, strawberry, peach, sarsaparilla and even a CHOCOLATE flavor. Try finding those anywhere else. They've added flavored seltzer water to their lineup. My son who now lives in LA says HMS is his favorite S/W and this is coming from one who's had his share of many different brands over the years. This location was recommended to us by someone who lives in the area. There was an article in the local paper about it and they thought it was a restaurant. Well, it is definitely NOT a restaurant. More like a small warehouse, this company makes and sells their own sodas. Varieties of sodas offered include many you'd expect: cola, orange, root beer and so on, with a few less common one's thrown in as well as flavored seltzers. The bottle deposits are higher than the usual, and when you return them here, you get a full refund. I love to support local businesses and this one is a no frills option of tasty beverages we want to drink anyway. During our visit, there were folks loading up the car. Either they were throwing a party, or stocking up. Hosmer Mountain Soda provide cardboard holders for your selections. You will find them by the door. Great soda and variety. Downfall is their staff. They are never friendly no matter when you visit. I have visited a lot of times and always experienced the staff being cold, not helpful or friendly and they seem annoyed when you ask them a question. Sourcing local water and brown sugar [yeah, BROWN] they create the *best* root beer available in the US. Hands down. If you think that IBC Root Beer is "really good" then (a) I weep for you, and (b) prepare to have your socks knocked off. I've never gone shopping for soda, so walking into this cool garage-like space, filled with cases of different flavored sodas and seltzers to explore, was almost as much a treat as the soda itself. Meanwhile, I am a fan of all things vintage and local, so Hosmer totally got me with their old-timey flavors (like sarsaparilla, lime rickey, and birch beer) and bottle design. They also got me with the crazy low prices: $10 for a case, plus deposit??? They have about 20 flavors, from root beer, ginger ale and cream soda, knock-offs of both Coke AND Pepsi (they call them Cola-Red and Cola-Blue -- I went with Red because Pepsi is gross), all the way to peach soda and lime rickey. Some, like the birch/root beers and colas, are super sweet. Others, like the diet cola and cranberry, less so. They're not overly fizzy, which could be good or bad depending on how you like your soda. Everything I've tried so far has been great in its own way, so you're sure to find a flavor that you like. My only wish would be for them to lose the corn syrup and swap it for real sugar, because I'm kind of a nerd like that. read more

Though I don't drink much soda these days, Hosmer is my soda of choice when I do. I appreciate the diversity of flavors, some of which are available at local businesses, and which are on full display at their Willimantic facility, and likely at their Manchester "shack" as well. I also appreciate that they sell all of their beverages in glass bottles, which they clean and refill, the old fashioned way, rather than create mountains of plastic waste for others to deal with. The place is rustic inside and out, which attracts me. The employees are friendly and helpful. Sodas and seltzer are available in 12 ounce bottles and also 32 ounce bottles, though seltzers seem restricted to large bottles, and not all sodas come in large bottles. They sell single bottles, as well as mixed 6-packs of small bottles and 4-packs of large bottles. They have typical flavors such as cola, orange and grape, and also some less common varieties such as black cherry, watermelon, and, my personal favorite, chocolate cream. Root beer, sarsaparilla, and cream sodas are very special, rich and foamy good. They have a line of sodas made with sugar rather than corn syrup, and I would love it if they would make all their sodas this way. If you like soda, and see the value in locally made products from a company that takes pride in the quality of their products and also takes back their containers rather than creating garbage for others to clean up, try Hosmer. I have purchased Hosmer soda from my local butcher and one day about 5 years agin I decided to drive to the actual Hosmer store to purchase soda. I have been at that store only 4 times in that 5 years. I went this weekend and when I walked in the man working there said, "you lost $26 the last time you were here". I was totally surprised - again I have only been there 4 times in 5 years. . . The last time was in October. Not only was he sure it was me, he remembered that I really liked the grape soda, and he had the money with a note sitting behind the counter. He could have easily pocketed the money (especially since it had been 3 months since I was there) - but he did the honest thing. If you're not from the area you probably wouldn't know about this place although you can find their fantastic soda's all throughout the stores in the area. I've grown up with Hosmer soda which is crafted and brewed locally in WIllimantic with the towns spring water. They offer a wide range of unexpected flavors like...pineapple, strawberry, peach, fruit punch and many others. The also have more common flavors like rootbeer, orange, grape, and ginger ale. Then they also carry some semi-unusual flavors like orange-dry, birch beer, cream soda etc.They also do a flavor of the month as I recall which can be strange and wonderful. Oh wait, but you're a cola drinker you say? Fear not they also have a cola red and a cola blue, their answer to Coke and Pepsi. I'd take a cola blue over either of the real mccoy's any day of the week. I love Hosmer for their playful flavors, their consistency, and their natural ingredients. So very proud of Hosmer! Willi doesn't always have a lot going for it. These days we tends to be known for things like... subsidized housing, train derailments, highest number of rehab clinics per capita. So we need to really get behind the great things we've got, and Hosmer has a firm foothold on that list. It's been around forever and doesn't seem to be going anywhere. They love being local and getting feedback from the locals, like listening to people about what kind of sweeteners they want to see in their sodas and what flavors people want to see coming back. Their grapefruit soda is still just the very best beverage in the whole wide world! They've got two varieties of ginger ale and at least two of root beer. Best of all you can bring back your bottles and fill 'er up again anytime you want. Just wish the grocery stores around here would stock them on their shelves. How crappy is that Stop & Poop and The Big Why won't put local sodas on their shelves? At least they'll stock Farmer's Cow. And at least the co-op keeps Hosmer in stock. read more

I need to drink a Homer's soon!!! Previous reviewers are right, it brings you back!!! I was born in Willimantic where it is brewed and went to college there for a while. When I was a kid if you were drinking soda it was Hosmer. I recall having red racks of empties in the garage for a long time. When the fam moved to Ashford at age 5 I recall being able to buy it in the back room of a Ashford package store. If I remember correctly it was only 10 cents or 25 cents a bottle back then. I liked the birch beer a lot, and the pineapple was the best my parents money could buy. The cherry-cola was great as well. i think you can still buy it at the Ashford Spirit Shop on 44 near the Wooden Spoon restaurant. I don;t drink a lot of Soda anymore but if I am going to Hosmer just tastes fresher, crisper and more intense flavor wise. Plus it is served in the little thick glass bottles.
