I've been going to Bob's IGA for decades for beef and grinders. Staff is extremely friendly and butchers are fantastic. The truckload sales have fantastic prices. However, in the last nine months the quality of beef I purchased is below average. We purchased a prime rib, sirloin, and filet mignon. My wife has been cooking prime rib for years and the result is better than most restaurants. She cooks it medium, pink with no red and this time it was tough. We cook sirloin on the grill by letting the sirloin sit out to reach room temperature and cook the 1 ¼" piece 7 minutes on one side then flip and cook for 5 minutes on the other side, remove from the grill and let rest for about 7 minutes. This method always made a juicy medium steak. We use the same process for filet mignon but for the 1 ¾" piece we cook 8 minutes on one side, flip and cook for another 7 minutes and let rest for about 9 minutes. Both sirloin and filet came out tough. We didn't understand why but thought maybe we just purchased beef from a stressed cow at time of butchering (which would make the beef tougher). We purchased sirloin and filet mignon from the next truckload sale, cooked the same way and the result was tough beef. I tenderized the last of the sirloin and filet mignon and it came out chewable. When I spoke to management he said this is the first he heard of this from anyone. I spoke to a few friends who also stated there beef quality has degraded. I have since purchased sirloin and filet mignon elsewhere and was delicious. We loved going to Bob's IGA but feel we shouldn't have to tenderize filet mignon. read more

TERRIBLE!! My wife and I went to IGA for the first time, as we were told of their great meats. This past Sunday, the 28th of November, We stopped and bought a $45 beef tenderloin and brought it to the butcher to be cut in steaks. Well, the butcher butchered the tenderloin, and instead of having nicely cut steaks we got massacred pieces of beef. Not only one steak out of it all!!!! I called the store to complain and the manager put me through to the butcher who said there was nothing he could do! $45 of meat that is only good for tips. I ordered steaks!!!! No, we will never go back!! read more

I ordered an Italian grinder online for pickup the next day in preparation for a road trip. It was excellent and extremely reasonably priced. Considering I've spent almost $12 at Subway for an inferior sandwich this was a steal at $8.99. Highly recommended. read more

Windham IGA or, as I know it, Bob's IGA is basically my neighborhood store. I have found most of the staff to be friendly and helpful and happy to work in the store. Let me share some of the items I constantly enjoy purchasing at Bob's IGA: - Bob's Spices/Seasoning mixes, especially the Festa and Italian Seasonings. - Store made sausage, spicy and mild/Italian. Excellent in pasta sauce or for sausage and peppers. - Beef stew meat which is ideal for my homemade three bean chili. Pan fry those chunks of beef in chili spice and then add the rest of the ingredients for every bite of chili to have fall apart tender deliciousness - Buttermilk, yep buttermilk. Not all grocery stores carry buttermilk and this is a requirement for coffee cakes, pancakes, and waffles in my world - Goya Products especially canned beans for my aforementioned chili - Regional Craft Beer! Excellent selection of craft beer which often includes Stony Creek Big Cranky, various Two Roads options, and many others that I can't remember but have enjoyed tremendously - Store made roasted pork shoulder and Spanish rice. Yum! - Store made potato salad with egg. It has a sweetness to it that I enjoy and happily serve to guests - Italian grinder made fresh at the deli. Remember to replace the cooked salami with Genoa salami and to speak clearly regarding what you want on it (cheese, condiments, vegetables). One large is a meal for me and my husband. - The store marinated chicken legs, specifically Jamaican Jerk. Slow cook those on a grill for a flavorful meal - Beef tenderloins which I cut up at home. Bob's has how-to-videos on their website that explain how to trim and cut up meats. I cut the tenderloin up myself and get the best fillets every time - Uncurred bacon. If you haven't tried uncurred bacon and are a bacon lover, please take the plunge - IGA brand sour cream - Split Chicken breasts. Basically, it's a two pack of chicken breast that I always fillet and then have four chicken breasts from one package - 10 lb or more package of ground beef/hamburger. I'll use the entire package to make taco meat, freezing large portions after its been cooked/seasoned. Or I'll use it for meatballs and meatloaves. - Family size package of pre made/ shaped hamburgers. Great for parties or using some and freezing some. - Fresh French bread sold by the registers. Yes, these went significantly up in price over the last year, but so has everything else all around us. Still the quality of the bread is good and worth picking up as an add-on for dinner or to cut for eating with cheeses - totes of fruits and/or vegetables, especially onions - Store made hamburger pickles Now, what I don't purchase from Bob's any longer: - 10 lb bag of chicken breasts. This is one item that definitely has changed in quality over the last two years. I have found the meat, when cooked as anything other than sheet pan fajitas, to be stringy and have a not so pleasant texture. To be clear, this isn't Bob's fault because these 10 lb bags of chicken come from the meat plant in what is the inner bag that Bob's then puts their bag and labeling on. This is the only reason for the four star review because I either have to purchase the smaller packages or go elsewhere to purchase a large package of chicken to stock my freezer. read more

Unfortunately Bob's IGA has really gone down hill in the last year or so. We always used to go there for their truckload meat sales. Prices are higher than others now and the meat quality and butcher prep are worst. Stopped in for a quick grinder today and it was equally over priced and tasteless. Soggy lettuce and tomatoes and less than 1/3lb of meat. Time to move on read more

Bob's demanded to see my medical records!!! The teenage kid at the door said I could go in without a mask if I showed her my medical records. Tried to call to discuss with the owner - phone is disconnected. CT State Police didn't want to hear about it. Filed a formal complaint with the State of CT but I'm sure they're equally as useless as the cops. Bob's has lost my business forever. read more

They have been counting the number of people as they enter snd exit. Most customers were distancing well. I LOVE the meat department. They bend over backwards to help you out and also are polite and informative on the phone. I asked a split of a very large piece of beef into 2 roasts and stew meat and they gladly did it as I requested. Other workers were there to help you find what you need! I will definitely be back! What are they half a salami grind from IGA on Wyndham Road it was the worst grinder I have ever had not please that all. After receiving my grinder it was flat very flat so I won't be going there for a while. read more

For the record, this store is officially called "Bob's Windham IGA." The IGA "chain" is really great, and walking into this small grocery store really convinced me that small, family-owned, and local grocery stores CAN and DO still exist, AND they can offer competitive prices (at the very least on their sale items). No chain retailers would dare sell ham steaks for $1/lb and a 16oz bags of pre-washed, pre-packaged spinach for $1 each. Also, Bob, from whom the store takes its name, is a legit butcher that can slice you a mean piece of meat. The locals seem to enjoy shopping here, and for good reason. The employees are kind, down-to-earth, and friendly. I just wish it was located closer to downtown Willimantic with ease-of-access to public transportation. Oh, well. read more

Smallish store with a really great butcher shop. If you want to support a local butcher this is definitely the place to go! The store is clean and well organized and easy to find things in, but my focus is usually on what's available in the meat department and the prices are reasonable for the quality. read more

BEST grinders in the eastern CT region. The butcher shop is phenomenal and cheap!! I usually get the small turkey sandwich (a small is decent size - I can only eat half) they load lettuce on it and other veggies and put oil and salt and pepper so good. However, the grocery store itself is NOT clean. Would never buy produce here or groceries for that matter. A year ago when I went here there were over 100 flies flying around the INSIDE entrance. The grocery store is small and old. Unleveled and cracks in the ground. It is usually pretty crowded around 4-5 pm. The parking is a mess. I might be back for a sandwich... :) read more

My family does a HUGE 4th of July party every year and need to order large quantities of meat. I called and order on July 3rd the following: 100 hamburger patties, 72 hotdogs, 10lb bag of boneless chicken breasts, 40 sweet sausage patties, and 40 hot sausage patties. It was ready by 8am the morning of the 4th! I didn't think it could be done and it was. The cost was comparable to another store we usually use, but we did have to go to another place to get kielbasa dogs which I was disappointed about...so I took away a star. My elderly mother xplained to me her experience with bobs iga in Windham ct on Saturday February 4th 2017.She said she ordered 2 large grinders which she does every Saturday night when she gets together with 3 if her friends.She always buys 2 large grinders from Bob's iga on Saturdays. Well she was upset that they made her order wrong but could not call back because they were closed.So I call t hem to let t hem know about the order on the next day and the manager acted like we'll i.will pass it on,what he should have done was offer a refund. They totally screwed up the order and it was an inconvenience for them all he said was ill pass it on.The food was never touched and he could have had it back but th hat offer was not on the table.He probably thought I was just complaining because I wanted a free grinder .Not the case,I called because th hey caused an inconvenience and ruined my.mothers get together with her friends.
