When they posted their menu to Facebook there was your typical fare of sandwiches, burgers and hotdogs but also scratch made soups and some other interesting additions. Empanadas, tacos as well as pernil are all on the menu. Pernil, a slow roasted pork shoulder, is a celebration and special occasion staple in Puerto Rico and Puerto Rican homes usually served with arroz con gandules. My wife got the empanadas and I ordered the pernil and arroz con gandules. All was excellent, fresh and a wonderful change of pace to other dining options. The pernil was warmed on the griddle which gave it a fabulous crisp that complimented the rich flavor. On a return lunch trip we called ahead to pick up the order while working from home. Our order was waiting for us which was empanadas, including their bacon cheeseburger special (they also make breakfast variants), chicken salad sandwich with potato salad and their vegan butternut squash 'bisque'. The chicken salad was clearly homemade and the sandwich was a generous size. The sandwich included a side (potato salad, my choice) making it a good value. The butternut squash soup was excellent - very thick and there seemed to be noticeable apple bits that complimented the soup wonderfully. The staff was attentive and, while still getting their processes worked out, they were friendly and clearly committed to beginning good business and community members. The only quirk was that we had to order at the front at the main register and pickup in the back, with the posted menu being in the back. I'm certain this will be something that gets worked out over time. The store offers a lot of local products from Mountain Dairy through Hosmer Mountain soda. It is unassuming, in the former home of a bagel shop, with the word "Asian" crudely placed in the round part of the bagel sign the only indicator if its presence. The inside is packed, somewhat haphazardly, with all manner of interesting, mostly Chinese, types of food. They have sauces, rices, spices, teas, frozen foods including a variety of packaged foods, dumplings, and even some vegetables and fish. They also have a variety of Chinese-labelled snack food and candy and a selection of housewares such as utensils and kitchen gadgets. The store is crowded, with boxes of merchandise apparently awaiting shelving, stacked and balanced everywhere, and there is also a rear section, previously the kitchen of the bagel place, that now seems to serve as the "warehouse." The proprietor is a very friendly and helpful man, and it appears that he runs the place by himself. He is always busy unboxing and shelving merchandise when not waiting on customers. Most of the clientele seem to be Chinese, which is a good sign in my opinion. Because I do not speak or read Chinese, I frequently need to ask him for assistance, and because his English is not great, communication is a challenge, but I appreciate that he has always been helpful and patient with me. My favorite item is the frozen dumplings brought in from a place in New York City, and I have also had good luck with interesting looking rices and sauces. I have not yet delved in to the frozen whole seafood and meat section, but I have been tempted, and likely will soon. It compares favorably in my opinion to Chinese grocery stores I patronized when I worked in New Haven, except that they had fresh produce and fish. I think that this place does not have a large enough customer base, or sufficient space, to be able to offer these things. The store is a little treasure in the Willimantic area, offering merchandise that is not available elsewhere, with friendly service and reasonable prices.

I've lived in WH nearly all of my life and I think this may be the first time I've gone to "the Crown". Lucky for me some of my best yelp friends like Dan R., have already provided quite thorough reviews of all of the goodness that the Crown has to offer. I got there shortly after they opened and meandered about trying to find the soup but ended up asking one of the sweet deli guys "is it too early for matzo ball soup?" and he said "we ALWAYS have it, what would you like, a pint or a quart? Hot or cold?" He hooked me up with a quart for about $11 with two nice matzo balls in it. I ate that soup at 9am and it was awesome. This market is pretty awesome. The deli is HUGE, they make their own pizza and sushi. The shopping aisles have lots of interesting things and I even ended up picking up some Gardein "chicken" tenders from the freezer because my grocer keeps running out. For the #5 review of the 9 CT Lobster Rolls I tried throughout the summer of 2022, we come to a…read moreplace that honestly surprised the heck out of me, Charlie's Fresh Catch, taking the #1 spot of the 6 central CT/Hartford area rolls and #3 of the total 9. Being from the area I must have driven past this place dozens of times without ever even noticing it. It sits just outside "Vernon Center" directly across from what used to be CT Golf Land. Charlie Ballard purchased this place from the previous owner and it's been open since December 2013 and I can't believe it took me almost 10 years to even know it was there. Charlies is a very unique place, like a stand-alone seafood department you'd find in a grocery store but bigger and better. Not only do they carry the basics, they also have things you won't find in a grocery store and a large variety of seafood creations all made right in the store. In fact they have an entire glass case filled with everything from seafood salad, stuffed clams, shrimp and mushrooms to hush puppies, pasta salads and other appetizers. They also have a small selection of produce and large racks of spices, seasonings, batter mixes and more. While they carry some of the major brands they also have their own blends to go along with whatever you're picking up. So much that you might even come out with more than you went in there for. They also carry some of the popular local brands like Hosmer Soda, it's good to see local businesses supporting each other, a win-win in my book. There's also a freezer stocked with soups, pot pies and other prepared seafood (and non-seafood dishes). So much variety that I stopped there at least five times and I feel like I barely made a dent in trying what they have to offer. For the lobster roll it was a tough decision but being the lowest price of all the 9 places I tried it is an incredible value. Served on a 7 inch NE-style hot dog bun they average a little over 6 oz for the whole roll with an average of a little under 3 oz of hot, buttered lobster meat. Probably the closest thing I've found to what you'd get near the shoreline though obviously not as fresh but literally the best one I had of the 6 in the Hartford/central CT area. Small-ish looking but filling and you can't beat the price for what you get They also have a number of other meals for purchase prepared in the store like fish and chips, fried shrimp/clams, fries, hot dogs, chicken tenders and more. The clam chowder is on par with the better ones I've had and has nice chunks of potatoes, clams and vegetable. I still need to go back and try some of the other soups they don't sell hot but keep frozen (lobster bisque). With the holidays approaching I think I may be back once or twice before the end of the year, maybe not for a lobster roll but to sample the great selection they seem to always have. Wish I had found this place years ago, definitely a new repeat customer. Five Stars!!
