Hidden GEM here! I wish I found this place sooner! But I'm still happy I found it. This local butcher has every cut of meat you can think of. From filet mignon ,ribeye, sirloin ,hangers, ground beef, and more. They even have chicken and local fresh eggs. Oh and I can't forget the huge marrow bones they have. Never thought I'd say this, but this meat market had to be the friendliest place on earth! lol Walking into it is essentially going into a walk-in freezer. Not too much space like a typical grocery place, but it shouldn't be (because it's a butcher shop). It's like getting rid of the buffer between a grocery store's back room and the customer. It's direct and real, if that makes sense. So every single person working there is outrageously friendly. Seriously. I literally felt uplifted by their personalities. You feel welcomed and not out of place. Michelle was helping me today and I'm so grateful to be served by her. I never went to a meat store before and so I didn't know how to order meat. I didn't know how I wanted it cut and if it was charged by weight or individually priced, etc. Michelle helped me every step of the way and was patient. She cut my meat for me and recommended the best way to have it cut. Her energy was glowing, and just being around her put me in a better mood. Also, I came here specifically because I was looking for some out of the ordinary meat (frog legs, duck, and rabbit). They have other exotic meat like alligator and octopus, too (I didn't get them because I had them recently). It's nice to be able to get meat beyond the regular stuff (which they have a TON of options for as well). Everything was super affordable, I was surprised actually. Their website has an excel list with the meats and their prices. Super convenient. It's like why bother getting meat anywhere else when you can skip the middleman (supermarket) and get the meat fresh, with prices NOT marked up. I had such a good experience here. After a family owned Italian meat market in Durham sold to new owners my wife and I were looking for a new place to purchase our weekly provisions. I had heard about this establishment and read all the positive reviews. Well we went there and were VERY impressed and excited to try everything because it all looked fresh and juicy. We even bought chicken jerky for our pups . The nice man behind the counter made us a 3 pound tenderloin roast that was a work of art trimmed perfectly and tied up nicely. I placed an order over the phone and the woman there was extremely impatient and rude. She was not helpful in helping me on how everything was cut, weighed, or with prices. I really wanted to cancel my order, I was talked out of it because that was how rude she was. When I went in to pick up my meat I observed them being rude to someone else. I asked the person that helped me with my meat, "Who is the lady that answers the phone she was rude and you were just rude to this customer". I did mention that they should label their meat so customers can know what it is. When it goes in the freezer or it's been a while and you don't remember what you ordered, it can be helpful to have the meat labeled. If I can find another butcher shop I will be going to that one where they are friendlier. Come early or be ready to stand in line for a bit. Worth the wait ,but it is still a 3 person max inside to order every time . Two guys usually run the show and they are quick & precise. Ask them questions and if you need help bringing stuff to the car they will help with that too. The prices are great and they are nice and stocked . The service is incredible and the meats are awesome! The only thing is the men act like they have never seen a woman before and could be a bit inappropriate. I ordered a 21lb baby lamb for Easter I picked it up on Good Friday I was charged for the lbs. Above but the box was a lot heavier. I got home and the meat weighed 30.25 lbs. which is not a baby lamb. We couldn't eat it, on how tuff the meat was, even though I marinated the meat the night before. It was so fatty full of silver skin. I ended up throwing more than 3/4 of the lamb away uncooked on how bad it was. Do not go there very disappointed. read more

well i wrote them to give a chance to do the right thing and they havent. last weekend i went to stock up on steaks and purchased 268 dollars worth. i asked for 5 1.5inch porterhouses, i said i like a good fillet on them. The guy said ok when came back showed me the top 2 and they looked great. Once i got home i realized the bottom 2 were horrible, 1 had no fillet looked like a bone in ny strip the other had maybe half size fillet. Absolutely no excuse considering the week before i also bought quite a large amount. Bought 2 fillet mignon loins, 7lb boneless ny strip loin, 7 lb boneless rib eye loin. I spent about about 600 in 2 weeks and cant even get a bit of customer service? I will be making large steak purchases due to a dry aging locker I have and no longer will go there unless make things right, i get great service and great meat at Big Y. Do you want to go into a regular grocery store and laugh at the entire meat department (and their prices)? Are you open minded, not squemish and knowledgeable about cuts of meat? Then please take the time to find Meadow Meat! Meadow Meat caters primarily to local businesses and supplies restaurants. BUT, Tuesday-Saturday they are open to the public. I've been a loyal customer for 4 years now. The store is a glorified meat locker, it's always chilly. Saturday there are lines out onto the loading dock, but it's worth the wait. All cuts of meat are available for purchase. And I mean ALL cuts (there are whole hogs on hooks in the back for goodness sake). If they don't have it pre-cut, it will be cut for you on the spot. If you don't like the look of what is on offer, anything can be cut fresh for you. This goes for pork, beef, poultry and any of the exotic meats they offer. If you call ahead, they can pre-order whatever you want. A small sampling includes alligator, pheseant, venison, duck, quail, squid, shrimp, whole fish, turkey, buffalo, reindeer..just ask and it will be found for you. The only draw back is you have to know what cuts you want and what they are supposed to look like. If you don't know what a standing rib roast is supposed to look like, take 10 mins and look it up on the internet before going. The butchers are happy to help you, but at the same time it's never empty so they may not have 30 mins to talk you through what you want. If you have the freezer space, they will sell you a side of beef or pork cut to order. This is the best value for meat you can find. Even if you don't have the space for that much, you will still find the best prices for very high quality. Around the holidays they have prime beef. This is difficult/impossible to find in a regular grocery store. After 4 years, the butchers know me and I know all of them. All the gentlemen are great. Sometime they can get a little gruff, but you're not there to have your butt kissed. It's all about the meat. The other customers are also great, there's a lot of camraderie going on and you have to be willing to joke along with everyone else...otherwise you'll go stir crazy with the the late afternoon or Saturday wait. Beef, chicken, pork, sausage, fish...all sold from a giant cooler with counter service. The guys are all very knowledgable about different cuts of beef and different types of fish. My goal was to obtain various types of sausage for my barbecue, and while they had a few nice kinds, I was slightly disappointed in the variety. Granted, I walked away with two kinds, plus some Mucke's hot dogs and fresh ground beef for $3.99 a pound. Still, I've heard you can get most any cut, and they'll source something for you if provided enough time. I'd be willing to bet that many local restaurants get their meat here. read more

I've been going to Meadow Meats since I was little when my grandfather would take me there. I'm 40 now. This is the BEST meat around that cuts out the middle man. You can get any type of meat, any cut. It is a LITTLE dicey going your first time because you essentially walk onto the loading dock and through the plastic curtain into the "store" area, which is totally refrigerated because of the meats held within. It is not pretty, it is not glamorous. It is about the meat, and that's it. Don't be afraid. They will help you choose your cuts, they will answer your questions, and you will leave with WAY better meat than you will EVER find in the grocery store. I have been to Meadow Meat 3 times. The first two times, I knew what I needed and I got it, not too tough. Their slab bacon is great, we served it for a Mother's Day brunch we hosted a couple years ago, and everyone raved about it. The most recent visit, was not successful for me. I went in on the Thursday before Easter, around 4:40 pm (they're open until 5). There were two people in line in front of me, but the line moved quickly. I needed meat to make bracciole...usually I just get whatever says "for bracciole" on the package at the supermarket. However, I thought I'd go to Meadow Meat and actually ask the butcher what cut I should be using. So I told him what I was trying to do, and he came out with a big package of flank steak, that looked like a pork loin, it was pre-packaged in plastic wrap. He put it on the scale and told me it would make 4 portions of bracciole, and it was $18.95. I needed to make bracciole for 12, so I said NO WAY that should cost $60. Plus it was thick and I would have to cut and pound it myself. So I voiced my objection, saying when I buy it at Stop and Shop, it costs no more than $30 to make a big pile of bracciole. So he launches into a rant against Stop and Shop and how bad their meat is, and how I will pay more for it there, and I just said, I'm not spending $60 for meat that I also still have to prep. Another guy overhears our conversation and says, no, for bracciole you want top round, and that's cheaper, $5.99/lb instead of $6.99/lb for the flank steak. I said ok, great, can you show me how big those pieces are so that I can figure out how much I need? He says, I have to cut it. I say ok. He says, oh, I can't do that now, we don't have anymore, you have to come back in the morning. I asked if they were going to get a meat shipment overnight? No, he just didn't want to cut it now. So thanks for the genius suggestion of telling me to buy meat you can't (won't) even provide). So I left. I didn't buy the bacon or Italian sausage I needed, I figured I would just get it all at the grocery store, since I had to go there anyway. Got to Stop and Shop, top round for bracciole was in plentiful supply and on sale for $3.49/lb. I got all the meat I needed for $13 and it was perfectly cut, I didn't need to trim or pound it at all. Much better than paying $60!! Sausage and bacon were on sale too, jackpot! It was all a big hit at my Easter gathering and I was told it was the best meat sauce I ever made. I always sang the praises of Meadow Meat but I will think twice now. If I can't get assistance when I need something, it's not the place for me. Sure maybe I will go there for some bacon once in a while, but this last encounter dropped them from 5 stars to 3 stars, in my opinion. read more

Pork chops, steak, chicken, you name it, they have it! Occasionally for my job we will need various odd body parts from an animal because we are training physicians, and we practice procedures on them. They always have what I need (pigs feet, horse liver, etc). I look forward to my monthly buys. I just wish they had better flyers or advertising on specials.
