6:30 Saturday at their "Customer Service" desk, I asked for lottery tickets. "No. Lottery's off." I asked for change to use the lottery machine. "We don't make change." In other words, the usual at Stop and Shop Middletown. And who was this Customer Service clerk? The assistant manager! Rude, unhelpful, and just plain unpleasant. I wss going to buy groceries too, but I just left my cart and walked out. The worst grocery store I've ever been to, and it's because of the service, or lack of it. There is one reason I keep coming here - it is three minutes drive from my house. That is where my enjoyment of this supermarket ends. For me, shopping here is truly a displeasure. The stocking is inconsistent so I can never rely on being able to get the products I come in for. This is particularly true for buttermilk which I buy weekly. Yes, it is a specialty item but the store is plenty large enough to keep it in stock and perhaps carry more than the one expensive option offered. In terms of the other selection, it is hard to find unusual ingredients and yet there does often seem to be a decent selection of tropical fruit. The bakery has very mediocre bakes and an average selection at best. There is nothing truly horrifying; I mean to say the place is relatively clean, no vermin, nothing that could actually get me to stop being lazy and go somewhere I enjoy shopping. This particular branch is pretty basic and low-tech. Finally, the staff and employees are a mixed batch that kind of breaks down to be 25% spiteful, 50% ambivalent, and 25% pleasant. If you have better options or more motivation, head elsewhere. read more

I agree with prior reviewers. I only shop here because it is the closest store to my house, and I regularly find moldy/expired food on the shelves. Nearly every week. Last week, I was going to buy brussel sprouts for Easter. I was there last Sunday. Half of the bags were already expired, and the rest expired 1 - 2 days later. People want to shop for Easter ahead of time, they're just trying to unload their expired food. A couple weeks earlier, I found the brussel sprouts were all expired and I told someone who worked there. He did remove them all, but they didn't have any newer ones that they could sell me. That same day, I went to buy feta cheese, 75% of the packages had expired one month earlier. A whole month!! How does no one catch this? There was no one around, so I sequestered them all in one area and put a piece of paper on top that said "expired"...at least I can hope I prevented people from buying them inadvertently. My favorite was last night, there is an open refrigerated case across from the cheese bar, that has seafood related stuff in it. My husband was looking at it and noticed about 10 tubs of various seafood dips on top of the case (where it was not refrigerated). They all said "keep refrigerated" on the containers, but they were warm. I hope no one bought them, they'd almost certainly get sick!!! The loose onions in the produce department always have fruit flies swarming around them. I've also come home with moldy bread, moldy yogurt, sometimes milk seems to turn only a few days after we buy it. It's a nightmare. Check everything you can, buy the latest dates possible. Just don't go here. The store is in need of a serious remodel. I think xpect, (when they were open) was cleaner than this place. When I go once in a blue moon, there almost no carts. There is also reports of a guy that hangs around the parking lot trying to open people's doors when your in car, he asks for money. Stay far away from this place. Middletown needs to get a big y! Update- just another reason why Not to go to this stop and shop. I'm reviewing the new nature's promise turkey sausages . S&S stopped carrying the Jones brand so they could sell their own. So far they're all frozen together and broke apart when I tried to separate. Really annoying especially when they keep discontinuing other brands to push their own!! Also the veggies at S&S are sub par to other stores. read more

This store is a quick walk and a quicker drive from my apartment but i just cant bring myself to come back. The store is kind of filthy and, judging by the attitude of the employees, they just don't care. The complaints of them smoking right outside the store are absolutely true and their demeanor in the store is just as apathetic. The butchers don't work past 3 on the weekends so unless you go early you'll be stuck with 1/8 steaks. Not exactly great for a summer BBQ. On top of that and the meat and seafood doesn't look (or in some cases) smell so fresh. Indeed some of the cod i contemplated buying had that fishy smell that one recognizes when opening a can of tuna. It also had the slick, slimy look of fish beginning to turn. Needless to say I passed. They do have a decent vegetable and fruit selection but that was about it and really it was no different than any other mega mart. read more

Staff is more concerned with talking to each other than the customers. Took half an hour at the deli counter. Never have I ever had to wait this long for lunch meat. I find that Stop and Shop matches pretty much any other large super market chain that you would find elsewhere in the country (Ralphs, Safeway, Harris Teeter etc). While they are generally not big on the "organic" stuff that some of these other chains may have a section devoted to, they have essentially everything that you would need in a super market. They have a decently large produce section with an extensive deli. There are about 3 aisle large frozen section, large bakery and not to mention multiple aisle canned/seasoning aisles. Remember to bring your stop and shop cards in because you won't get your discounts without it! CHECK YOUR RECEIPT!!!. ALWAYS!!!. I started doing it recently... I found errors - 8 out of 10 shopping trips - here at the Middletown location. WOW...scamming big time!!!. Think of how much this store makes - if customers are overcharged or not given sale discount as advertised at checkout- and the customer does not catch it. That adds up to big money in one years time for this store and the Stop and Shop stock holders, owners, and company big wigs!!!. My receipt mistakes ranged from $3 dollars up to almost $10 dollars!!!. Hmnnnn....makes one wonder!. Continually have meat in swollen packages- aka it's gone bad. I've seen them stocking swollen packages without even stopping! I've gotten so much bad meat here that I'm honestly done buying from them. When I call on the phone the service desk seems stumped as to how to help me and even say "What do you want me to do?" My already difficult visit to Middletown Stop and Shop proceeded to get worse. No blood oranges to be had, the packaged produce section of spinach, arugula, etc. was practically empty. Same thing for the meat department; empty, empty and empty. No pork tenderloins to be had. No one in the butcher department. I did have to use the rest room, which was filthy as usual. At the check out my coupons were not used until I asked that they be used. Finally got out, packed up my car and headed the 9 miles home. Unloaded the car and could not find the rotisserie chicken I purchased. Searched the back of the car twice. No chicken. I called the store and after at least 20 rings a young lady answered the phone. Yes indeed the bagger turned in my paid for chicken because it wasn't put into my cart. The only solution offered was for me to get back into the car and drive the 9 miles back to the store to pick it up. No ifs ands or buts. Must be present and produce my receipt. No offer to put a credit onto my S&S card, actually NO offer of anything. Therefore nothing to have for dinner. This is not the first time my Stop and Shop shopping experience in Middletown has been negative. But it will be my LAST. Mr. Jeff Micklus you have lost my business for good this time. read more

The help when available is often just uninterested in helping you. Almost always lines at registers. The self checkout is actually pretty user friendly though and they do often have someone to help you there so that is why they get a second star. Anyway, it is the closest and easy to access supermarket and our local town market is actually dirtier and has limited selections and has gone down hill this past year. (River Valley Provisions is decent but is actually further for us). So many of us are in a way stuck with this place and this store knows it and provides prices and service accordingly. One final thing. This stop and shop card thing - jeeze why not make the " I have no card give me the discount anyway" choice the default choice. read more

I order through Peapod Delivery Service but shop at ALL local supermarkets within a few square miles. Customers in this location are friendly and so are the employees. I often shop here for the same items so I don't always check out what is 'new'. Their organic section is very small in comparison to their Cromwell counterpart so I don't shop organic goods here, other than produce. Their produce is abundant, frequently WELL-PRICED and fresh. Their egg case is smaller than other locations but they carry NELLIES Organic, and those eggs are a prize. I also shop there for small packages of cat litter. I'm a senior of 5'2 and can't carry large bags of pet supplies. Sometimes shelves have not been replenished in this department which is a disappointment. Again, I don't do huge purchases at this location but run in for a modest amount of supplies. Interestingly enough, as much as Stop & Shop runs good discounts on items, I find comparable prices with many items at Whole Foods [which ought to come as a surprise to many]. For example, Pacific Low Sodium Chicken soup is basically $3.99 everywhere unless on sale. Yesterday I stopped in and bought $13 of food. I used the automatic counter. I placed coins and a $20 bill into the slot. The cash receipt noted my change was $7+. I received only 2 ONE DOLLAR BILLS, missing the $5. I called over a store employee and she said she'd check with customer service. It took several minutes of my standing there waiting. I was not happy. You see if I had not paid attention and left the store with only $2 in change, and THEN RETURNED, they would have told me that they'd need to check that register at the end of day. [This occurred only once before several years ago, and at another store, and that's what they did]. So I STOOD MY GROUND. The rep returned with a kind mgr [I guess] and placed her fingers inside that tiny cash slot. She pulled out the $5 which had rolled up within. I thanked her profusely and told her she needs to work with the local police department. They are all nice here but I can't help but be concerned for distracted customers who do not get their accurate amount of change. Its something to be very aware of. read more

This stop & shop Sucks. first off its way too expensive in there. The costumer service is terrible The manager itself ( forget her name) oh wait she didn't introduce herself when I spoke with her.. Her managing skills are very POOR. I once bought some facial product and a cream from there that gave me a rash and wanted to return it, however I didn't have the receipt I just had my ID. when the products in the store are under 20 dollars they are suppose to take it back and refund the money. However they didn't take my products back because the day before I sent my girlfriend over to return these products for me because I couldn't find my ID.. so because of that the employee ( an old man) gave me an attitude,and when I spoke to the manager, and explained what happened, and that I have never returned anything in the store before, and that I'm not even in the books she didn't give a damn she said it looks suspicious.
