Hosier Lane opened as a Street Art Gallery in 1998 by the City Lights Initiative. The lane is located opposite the entrance to the Atrium at Federation Square on Flinders St, in a prominent spot in the city. The lane was noted for the quality and the political nature of its art. The graffiti-covered walls and art-installations have become a popular backdrop for fashion & wedding photography. In 2013 street artist Adrian Doyle painted the entirety of the adjacent Rutledge Lane one color with the consent of the Melbourne city council to create a work he called "Empty Nursery Blue". In 2013, Melbourne's largest urban art paint-up was undertaken in the form of All Your Walls. A makeover of Hosier & Rutledge Lanes celebrated the role street art & graffiti plays in the city. The lanes were buffed black then completely transformed, top to bottom, by over 100 local graffiti & street artists. In early 2020, 6 masked people 'Colour Bombed' the lane, erasing many artworks. Banksy's art is no longer here but like a lof of the art. This is one spot it use to be in. I was amazed at how many people found their way here from early in the am to late in the evening there were all sorts taking selfies. Families and aspiring social media viral stars. It was amusing watching everyone. There are other laneways and alleys with graffiti but I think Hosier Lane is one of the easiest to locate. There are walking tours and free tours that highlight Hosier Lane too. If you come expect a constant flow of people. Most are courteous trying to get the same backdrop with the right angle for their profile pics. Amazing street art! Anything goes on this alleyway. Got some paint? Go to town! This place is absolutely covered, just covered in graffiti. There aren't any rules, just go nuts! The street, the sidewalks, all the walls, everything is covered in layer after layer of spray paint. There's a huge diverse array of artists who have come out here. Don't care for a piece? It'll get covered up or graffitied over in a matter of days. Banksy has even painted up this alleyway, but those pieces are long painted over. When I went, there were some huge pieces of art that spanned whole buildings, and lots of smaller pieces. Some of the art is politically incorrect, but again, anything goes. The place is so well trafficked that it feels safe. It's well lit, and there are lots of people taking hipster photos here. There's a non-profit coffee shop around here, but it's just covered in paint too. Expect some shadiness going on around here, it's an alley filled with tourists and artists. It's absolutely amazing that the city and the landlords let the street art community get away with this, but it's an asset to the city and some really cool ways for artists to express themselves in one place. read more

While I was in Melbourne, I was not in the mood for going to touristy landmarks. I decided to leave my hotel and just walk around aimlessly hoping to find something quirky. I found a few things including Hosier Lane. It's a little alley across the street from a museum and behind a church. The walls are covered in graffiti. Colorful, artistic and expressionistic. Don't forget to look up and look behind you to see the aborigine boy. Towards the end of the alley is a gun stuck to the wall. The colors and messages are brilliant. read more

Pretty cool street in downtown Melbourne with graffiti art. You have a ton of tourist walking down and taking photos. If you get lucky you'll find the artist themselves painting and working on new pieces! The walls of the buildings in this alleyway are filled with incredible talent and street art, though I don't know if you can even call it graffiti because of how nice everything looks! Very cool street and adds a lot of character to an already artsy city! Right across the street from Federation Square! And surrounded by a bunch of shops, coffee shops, bars and restaurants! Another well known alleyway of street art, this place offers some graffiti and it's very colorful. There are plenty of people taking selfies and it's a site to see. It's just like union lane, located in between streets of melbourne. It's cool if you stumble by the street, but if you're specifically coming here to see this than it can be a bit of a disappointment. It's a nice local flavor to melbourne, but I wouldn't necessarily come here just to visit these streets or go look for them. It's a good detour if you're in the area, but it's not something I would be disappointed in if I didn't pass by. read more

I am here to poop on the Hosier Lane party. Apparently this is one of the most photographed streets in Melbourne. Maybe it's considered cool for Australia but growing up in California, I was not impressed. There's "graffiti" everywhere in LA, some better than others. There's are two streets in the Mission District in SF, where I live, with much better street art. I saw some people trying to take artsy hipster photos in this area. It works well for that. Otherwise, you can walk through in about 2 minutes. Hosier Lane is centrally located and it's worth a quick look since you'll most likely be nearby at some point. read more

Walking down Hosier Lane is like being transported somewhere else. It's like the whole city disappears and you're just wandering in this magical, colorful place. This is way, way beyond the terrible graffiti that you usually see - this is ART. Melbourne allows for certain alleys to be used for street art, and if you're in Melbourne you should check some of them out. I found several throughout the City Central area, but by far Hosier Lane was my favorite (along with the other small alleys that branch off of it). I won't go into details about the art, because it's always changing. What I saw may not be what the last person saw, or what you will see. I spent much more time on Hosier Lane and took way more pictures than I thought I would. I highly recommend making a visit, and having plenty of room on your SD card! And, not specific to Hosier Lane, but grab one of those visitors' guides because some of the alleys are featured in there. Don't be afraid to wander through a random department store to find the backdoor to one of the alleys and don't be afraid to smile to yourself as you walk down a narrow alley full of teeny, tiny cafes with people enjoying their morning coffee. It's really like walking into another world, one you would've never known existed if you hand't just started poking around. read more

Back visiting my home town for work, I had 4 things on my must do list. Yum Cha in Chinatown, MCG for the footy, any Vietnamese & Hosier Lane. Now don't get me wrong, it's not like I've been gone forever. It's only been 4 months, and I've been back at least once a month since. That's how much I love Hosier. Even took a colleague down who said something along the lines of "I have to take photos, and I'm not the photo taking type". Apparently this place is one of those places one should check out when one is in Melbourne due to the street art, however I must admit that there is nothing all that impressive here. One time I passed through here I had to hold my breath because there were a number of people spray painting images on the wall. I wandered through here earlier and discovered that while there was some nice art here, some people had come through and completely ruined it by painting tags and other dodgy art over the decent murals. Okay, it doesn't take all that long to walk through, but I certainly wouldn't go out of my way to check it out since there isn't all that much to see here. read more

When friends to come visit Melbourne, there are a few different places that are top of the list for places to see first. One of which is Hosiers Lane. It is probably proof that Melbourne has a more liberal policy towards street art than other cities around the world. The variety of works, stencils, and pastes are really creative and it is arguably Melbourne's most colourful laneway. The smell of aerosol and the pong from the bins can be overpowering on a very hot day so be warned. If it gets too much you can always try your luck at Movida next door for some amazing Tapas food. No sir, this is not just any inner city lane way! This is one of Melbourne's most popular and unique tourist attractions, which is why I couldn't NOT review it. Hosier Lane is public art at its most organic. Some may call it graffiti, and usually I would agree, but the talent inherent on the lane way walls far surpasses that of a hastily scrawled tag. Citylights Projects commission most of the art work here and it is often featured in magazines and tourism campaigns. This lane way is at odds with its location. Just off Flinders Street and opposite Fed Square, it is in the heart of the cities commercial and tourist centre, and is the perfect location for tourists to get a peak at Melbourne's alternative art scene without venturing outside the CBD. Turn the corner at Movida Tapas Bar or the Forum live music venue and your in a creative space of a Brunswick elk. Spray cans and milk crates add an air of authenticity despite the camera toting tourists capturing the walled art for themselves. Don't be surprised to find yourself in the middle of a fashion photo shoot, or find yourself compelled to visit Movida! Yes, its essentially an alley, but its also home to great food, music and art ...its marvelous Melbourne! read more

Stumbled onto this iconic lane by accident while walk exploring the central city and so glad I did. Was an amazing street- found on the southern edge of the city, opposite the Atrium entrance at Federation Square, on Flinders Street. A great example of the legal street art and the sophisticated, quality, unique expression of its artists. Some very talented street art along all of the walls- saw an impressively tall tree (in all seriousness, how did they get up that tall to paint it!) as well as the childhood-throwback, teenage mutant ninja turtles. All the walls covered by stencils, paste-ups and murals in an eclectic mix of art-installations. Lots of plastic milk crates around to be able to used while posing for photo which was fun. Also saw fun little concrete faces in the barred up windows of some buildings. Enjoyed walking in and around the bluestone cobbled laneway taking it all in. Definitely a must visit since Melbourne is known for its urban art and this lane is a particularly celebrated landmark. read more

The best thing about Hosier Lane is probably the fact that it's free of charge. Why yes, I am cheap thank you. PROBLEM, OFFICER? But seriously, I do have to say that I'm a fan of Hosier Lane, regardless of whether or not it costs money for a view. Melbourne's pretty well-known for its amazingly talented graffiti artists and it's really no understatement. We have some brilliantly talented people in this city and not all of them get their art displayed at the NGV (obviously) so Hosier Lane is the best place to go for that underground scene. If you're in the area and you're passing by, don't overlook an opportunity to at least take a quick look. You won't regret it. Also... LOL at the people who just tag their names instead of actually doing graffiti. read more

How often do you get the opportunity to stare at a brick wall for hours or photograph a rubbish bin and not be considered mentally unstable? Hardly ever, in my experience. Hoiser Lane is one of the most famous street-art galleries in Melbourne. Yep that's right, the lane itself is a gallery showcasing cool, vibrant and offbeat art by both well-known and up-and-coming artists. The entire lane, and everything in it, is covered in graffiti, stencils and past-ups making it a great location for a casual stroll. The artworks change on a regular basis so it's well worth popping down regularly. Who knows, you may even be lucky enough to catch one of he artists in the act. But hey, don't do anything stupid like tackle them and make a citizens arrest because they're actually allowed to graffiti the wall here. Of course it wouldn't truly be Melbourne if you didn't also find a couple of bars and restaurant here too. In fact Hoiser Lane is home to the iconic Movida. read more

A very short but eclectic alley way, filled with the art that I have come to known as 'Melbournian art'. From the shoes hanging from the cable across the alley, to the artfully designed graffiti along the walls and cobblestone alleyway, Hosier lane truly shows you what Melbourne is all about. There's even the 'hipster' cafe with $4 clothes on sale and a dingy feel to it. When my brother was over from California visiting me in Melbourne I took him to see Hosier Lane and he was impressed. For the last decade this has been Melbourne's unofficial most popular tourist attraction. This short laneway is the centre of Melbourne's thriving street art scene and the walls of the laneway are covered in aerosol paint, stencils, stickers, paste-ups and even small sculptures. The work of some of Melbourne's best street artists, along with a few international artists, are on show in this lane. Remarkably the laneway has become a favourite location for wedding photos. There was a group of school kids on school excursions with their art teacher and some other tourists photographing when we visited on Thursday afternoon. Daylight is the best time to visit - I'm told that the lane can be dangerous at night. We stayed for about 20 minutes looking at and photographing some of the art in the lane. Although the cobble stone lane is open for traffic it is mostly delivery vehicles and only one van drove down it while we were there. Hosier Lane is not a free for all graffiti zone; parts of the laneway do have a Melbourne City Council permits for the street art on the walls and are controlled by certain business and residents (to the extent that anyone can control public walls). Other walls are subject to graffiti removal, including the removal of two of Banksy's rats last year. read more

Before I came to the city, I knew three things about it - Flinders Station, Queen Victoria market and Hosier Lane. While I got to visit all of them, the one that wins the crowning glory is Hosier Lane. As I walked down the cobbled pedestrian narrow laneway of the Federation Square, little did I expect a charming little walkway brimming with graffiti. As an artist myself, I could sense a meaning in each of the artworks. One of my favorite is the grafitti of Lord Ganpathi, a Hindu God - clearly shows that Melbourne welcome diverse cultures. If you're visiting Melbourne, you're most likely going to be in this part of the city centre at some point, so be sure to explore this artistic side of the town. You will find a range of art adorning the walls of this narrow Melbourne lane. It is easy to find, just a block from Flinders Street Station and every spare space is filled. Some artists have used their space to share a message - political or personal - and others have simply left their mark. A particularly stunning mural features the young face of an indigenous Australian - it's massive and excellent. There's also graffiti and spray art. There is always something new painted which makes this lane something you can keep coming back to see. There's a lot of people who misuse and misread graffiti as an art form, and this place along with countless other little alleys and laneways in Melbourne really make everyone rethink the stigma. Incredibly overrated. There is some indication of technical ability and some hints of creativity, but it is rare to encounter both in any of the pieces. Stylistically it belongs in the early 1990s, which I suppose is sufficiently distal to provide interesting retrospective if the works were actually from that period, but now it is revivalism of a cultural trajectory on a road to nowhere. read more
