How fun is it to see a movie in a different country!!!! While it's all pretty much the same, it's still a unique, different experience. The theater was huge, with comfortable seats. Sadly our row did not recline. The movie was clear and loud, and the popcorn tasted fresh and healthier. It was the perfect afternoon and I cannot recommend this activity enough. These cinemas belong to the Palace Cinema chain, and that means that you will tend to get movies that generally don't make it to the major cinemas, which I have to admit is pretty good. Mind you, I don't come down to these cinemas as often as I should, which is a bit of a shame because having a diet of just main stream movies can be a bit of a drain, and result in one becoming rather jaded with the whole industry. As such, cinemas such as these one are pretty good in fact. Oh, and being in the centre of the city makes it pretty good as well. read more

My favourite place in the world. My boyfriend and I went probably once a week before we moved to Brisbane. We didn't want to go to ANY other Palace Cinema. The most devastating part about moving states was losing our beloved theatre. Our Palace memberships are the cheapest subscription we have ever bought and we're TOTALLY worth our while. a Beautiful venue. People who attend this theatre are real theatre goers and lovers so everyone is incredibly respectful and quite in the theatre. Workers are always delightful, and the place is always clean! I miss Kino dearly and can't wait to go back (hopefully) soon. read more

Very unique cinema from my experience. My theatre was only 50 seats max. It's almost how I'd picture a theatre room in some billionaire's mansion. The screen is small, but relative to the room it's large enough and you still have an immersive experience. The sound and projector quality are top notch. Possibly up there amongst the most comfortable seats I've had in a theatre. The concession actually faces a food court. So you have plenty of choice of snacks, coffee and higher-end baked goods, sandwiches as well as beer and wine. Only downside is I wouldn't want to pay this much for a movie regularly, but it was worth the experience at least once for me. It's also possible that the rate (at least $20 ticket) is near going rate in Australia anyway for all I know. read more

Kino Cinemas is my cinema of choice in the CBD. Generally it is not oversubscribed and occasionally I have positively had what felt like a private screening of a film due to the low numbers. I love that you can grab a drink at the bar and take it into the cinema with you. Offering a good range of movies from the latest Hollywood blockbusters to the more obscure arty & foreign language films. They also host the many film festivals that happen throughout the year. There are only a handful of screens and the cinemas range in size according to the expected audience size so you may find yourself in the small & compact cinema or the larger ones. The seats are very comfortable with ample leg room for most. Seats are not allocated so I would recommend heading there early if going at a peak time, to a new release film or to a film that is part of a film festival as I know those sessions are often very popular. I would definitely recommend taking a jumper and/or cardigan with you as the air con can get just a little chilly, especially if there are only a handful of you in the screening. read more

I love Kino, it really represents they way I believe all movie theatres should be. Upon walking in, (if you can find it under the great space) the relaxing ambience is immediately evident; dimly lit with independent film posters covering the walls, you will often find many movie patrons filling the foyer sipping a beer while they wait for their movie to begin. Oh yes that's right did I mention Kino Cinemas are fully licensed? This not only means you can purchase a selection of fine wine, beer and champagne before your movie, but you are also more than welcome to take your bevvy into the cinema with you! Kino shows a variety of arthouse films, as well as a small collection of Hollywood mainstream movies too. Try not to succumb to the call of the ice cream (everytime) Kino has great range of movies from around Australia and the world. In days past you would clal it 'Art House' movies but they do occasionally have blockbusters and at other times, slow burn movies which they run become blockbusters! We really enjoy visiting Kino Cinemas. It is in a convenient location in the CBD, the seats are comfortable, there are no seat allocations, and you are also able to order a drink to take into the cinema with you. Despite the fact that some of the screens can be smaller, it is still an enjoyable venue to watch movies. The place to see arty, foreign, and indie flicks in the city (and an occasional "sophisticated" blockbuster). 7 dollar Monday is now 8 dollar Monday but it's still one of the best deals in town. Comfy seats, but other than the main cinema the screens are rather small. Get your alcoholic bevvie of choice at the bar/ticket counter: Popcorn and a coopers will set you back 9 dollars. read more

Kino is a cinema that believes in magic. It captures nostalgia, dresses it up a bit and injects it into your veins. I like the quiet atmosphere, its snug when you sit on the comfy seats and you can have a glass of wine in your hand. Most hipster cinemas tend to allow alcohol. I especially like the clean and trendy bathrooms, so much that I took a selfie that may or may not see the light of day. Although the screens are not that big, one cinema room I sat in was so little, that the screen was covering my general direction. I felt immersed. If I had a choice, I would pick this room every time. It won't match IMAX, but if you have a partner, it's most likely the better choice. read more

Great cinema if you're in the CBD and want to catch a foreign or an indie film. I've been here a number of times to do just that. It's a different crowd compared to mainstream cinemas (eg. it doesn't attract large groups of rowdy teens) so if you want to really enjoy a film in a comfortable manner with a (possibly alcoholic) beverage in hand and without noise disruptions (looking at you Hoyts MC), this is the place to be. read more

I really love these cinemas- dare I say they are my favourite cinemas in Melbourne? It is, I suppose as all Palace cinemas tend to be a boutique theatre. Intimately sized, decently priced, comfortable and has the films mainstream cinemas do not. A little know face is the car park for it is $12 all day on weekends! What's not to love?! The movie starts at 3:40 as I recall, however I was alone in the room till 3:55 so I started to feel that I would be the only person. Can't help been scared by the sound of the ads before the movies. I love the kids who came in later. The room is small but the sound is good. read more

A tiny little cinema tucked away off Collins street. They alway have a great selection of art house and foreign films as well as playing host to some premieres and special events. Because each cinema room is so small it's a good idea to show up early to get good seats and wow those seats are comfortable. The cinema has a nice bar selection of drinks and snacks far beyond most cinemas and your welcome to bring anything from the bar into the movies! read more

I like that you get a quality feed and seating in the Collins Place food court before or after a film and you can take your drinks in to the cinema. Kino and Cinema Nova in Carlton are my go to places for movies from the CBD as I can't stand the assault of 30 mins of advertising and political spin before a movie (even when there's no election) of the Village and Hoyts cinemas. I also like that the cinemas are smaller and every seat in a cinema has a great viewing angle. read more

Kino Cinema is what I wish my local Palace was like: all wonderfully diverse mixture of arthouse films, ambient low lighting in the fully licensed foyer bar and cinemas just large enough that you don't feel - by dint of the cinema's relative emptiness - like you've gone to see a clanger like Hot Tub Time Machine. Somewhat incongruously located within the Collins Place shopping centre, Kino Cinemas boasts four screens, some of the comfiest seats I've found in a movie theatre and the kind of screening programme that would make the fullas over at MIFF green with envy. Specialising in arthouse and documentary film and hosting a number of film festivals, Q&As and special screenings throughout the year, Kino Cinemas is undoubtedly the place to go if you find yourself in the CBD and have a hungering for a damn fine film. Adult tickets are $17.50, concessions $14.50 and on Mondays you can bag a ticket to any film for a mere $7. read more

I'm a big fan of the $7 tickets on Mondays. As, apparently, are many other people since they often seem to sell out of the movie I want to see. It can be really hit or miss how big the crowd is on those cheap nights, so if you're dead-set on seeing something I'd recommend getting your tickets ahead of time. The screens are small, so I don't think I would go here on a full-price night, but they do have a nice selection of foreign/independent films which wouldn't necessarily be at one of the bigger theaters. read more

With the demise of the Lumiere back in 2005, Kino is the CBD's last surviving venue playing independent films on a daily basis. Up the Paris end of Collins Street, it's tucked downstairs in the shopping centre at the bottom of the Sofitel and would be easily missed if it weren't for the 'Now Showing' posters out on the street. Part of the Palace group, Kino support local and international films of merit. It often plays host to film festivals, retrospectives and special events, so it's worth checking out their website ahead of a visit. Like nearby Nova in Carlton, Kino does super-cheap Mondays ($7 all day) but the crowds are often thinner, probably owing to the lack of cheap places for dinner in the area. The cinema itself has a little eatery in it where you can have a pieces of cake and a wine before the film - but don't drink too much as the bathrooms are notoriously for having queues even when the cinema seems otherwise empty! read more

Melbourne could do with a few more nice independent cinemas. Kino's ambience suffers from being situated smack bang in the middle of the slightly uninspiring Collins Place complex. Down the far end of Collins Street, there unfortunately isn't much in the way of eateries in the area and as a result Kino can feel a bit empty. This is both a blessing and a curse. While you're always guaranteed a seat, you loose that buzzy feeling that a packed cinema garners. And, as Hope specified, somehow unbeknownst to me the bathrooms always have queues. However, it is still a nice plush cinema that shows a great range of movies. The thing that is so great about the Palace group is that they manage to show an interesting range of independent and foreign movies without shunning the more popular releases. You're always guaranteed that you'll have a real variety to choose from. Also, being slightly classier than you're average multiplex you can be guaranteed that the snack bar will have a more than overpriced popcorn and choc tops on offer. read more

I was under the impression that this was a great place to see indie films. However, that is until people start signing petitions against a film, then they buckle under pressure to not show a film. I usually love going to the Kino (why I gave it 4 stars)...but the experience yesterday was underwhelming (and I am not just talking about the film we saw). Firstly...be warned when booking tickets online...Cinema 3 is REALLY REALLY badly laid out and if you want one of very few good seats you need to queue for ages before the film. (You can see which cinema the film is in when you book online...I know that now!) Secondly...when you book online - you do so because you want to avoid the queues. Unfortunately, the Palace's online system doesn't let you print up your tickets AT HOME, so you still have to queue...Note to staff...3 queues would be good - one for people collecting tickets, one for people buying tickets and one for the 'candy bar'...(kudos to the Kino for selling such lovely wine by the glass). So you have to queue to collect your ticket anyway...brickbat. Now to Cinema 3...this should have discounted tickets....there are 4 rows....the first two are so close to the screen it's BAD. Worse is the length of each row...so long that anywhere but the middle 6 seats and you're sitting at a very wide angle to the screen. I cannot imagine sitting in the first two rows on the ends...AWFUL. read more

Kino is a nice little cinema that offers a bit more of a quiet, plush experience than the mainstream cinema complex. Tucked away inside Collins Place, the cinemas are cosy without feeling small, seats are comfortable and roomy, and the bathrooms are very nice - the George Costanza in me was pleased. You can bring booze into the cinema, too, which is always a plus. read more

Not long ago, Kino Cinemas completed some renovations which greatly improved the box office/bar area (essentially moving it outside into the food court area) and added more cinemas to the reclaimed space. As other reviewers have said, they are quiet, clean and comfy. However, these 'new' theatres are tiny, and frankly, they don't justify the same ticket price as elsewhere when you want a 'big screen' experience. The sound is also not very good in these 'theatrettes', and given the space constraints, is unlikely to be 7.1 Dolby or equivalent. There now appears to be only 2 or 3 standard-sized theatres, and 4 or 5 small ones (some VERY small) within Kino. It might pay to check with the box office first to see if the film you want to see is being shown on a standard-sized screen. Of course, the trade-off is that with more screens they can show a wider variety of films (which I heartily endorse) but when the same cinema 'experience' can be achieved by sitting slightly closer to your TV at home, then the result is a very underwhelming experience. Disappointing :-( read more

This is the only place in Melbourne I'll come to watch a movie. It's free from children, large crowds and they serve decent hooch at a fair price. The big comfy chairs and small cinemas are just an awesome bonus. 5/5 read more

Kino is second only to Nova and Astor as my favourite cinema in Melbourne. Where Nova has the cheap, close-to-work factor and Astor is, well, an art deco, year-long film festival kind of joint, Kino is beloved because it is quiet and comfortable, and has a good bar. I don't like over-crowded cinemas, so I like Kino's quiet vibe mid-week. Kino's films range from arthouse to some of the more interesting mainstream releases, so there is always a bit of choice in trash and treasure. The bar area is essentially a food court, which I think gives it an illicit boozing-in-the-food-court feel, but it is all surprisingly cosy once you settle in with some friends, some wine and a cheese platter. Furthermore, wine is served in various levels - standard pour, feature length and epic - and the quality of the range is high enough to make the epic pour (an extra $5) worthwhile.
