Cinema 11
Maria T.

I came to Hoyts several times during MIFF so here goes a review of Cinema 11, as it's pretty much where I saw all the films. This theatre is huge, so even if you think you're so far back in the queue, chances are you will still find a decent seat. The seats are plush and there's enough leg space in front for people to move in and out effortlessly, hoorah! However the major drawback of cinema 11 (and 10, not sure about the others) is the complete lack of soundproofing, so if you're there on a night when Lion pub is playing club anthems (Thurs/Fri/Sat) you will hear everything down to the last Sorry from the Biebes himself. At some stage the music blends away into the background, as you get used to it after a while. But it's definitely irritating at the start. And if you think you're experiencing an earthquake tremour, don't be alarmed, it's (still) just Lion - they can't seem to get enough of that bass.

Located inside the Melbourne Central Shopping Centre, Hoyts Cinema is one of many commercial cinemas in the CBD. As you would imagine, the crowd at this cinema is a lot younger than you would expect to find at more arthouse cinemas such as Nova. The screens are also much bigger and the range of movies on display are very much just based on ratings and hollywoodesque in style. I prefer going to Cinema Nova to watch movies than here (they show them as well and they have a licensed bar). If there was a massive blockbuster out that demanded a large screen, then I'd probably head to IMax and indulge in the most immersive movie going experience. Its location is a huge draw for Hoyts. If in the CBD and you want to watch a movie, then this is probably where you'll end up.

Hoyts is the first Cinema that I went to when I had the realisation that it costs you a cool twenty to see a movie these days and almost $30 if you want to see something in 3D. It's not their fault, because this is what every cinema charges - but they just left that negative memory in my head. My initial prejudice aside, there is nothing special about Hoyts in the Melbourne Central Shopping Mall. They show all of the major movies that you would expect, they show 3D movies and they charge the same price as every other cinema. The only differences are that this cinema is four stories above Melbourne Central Train Station, and is thus very easy to get to if you are catching the train into the city. And that if you go get a burger at Grill'd next door then you can get a movie ticket for $10. Nuff said - I'm off to get a burger.

Negative: room smells of body oils imbedded into the upholstered seats. How awful to have to sit in this environment for hours. Seats are stained Positive: wide aisles; great location in CBD

My first and probably last gold class experience…read more Don't get me wrong it was pretty cool having a cinema to yourself and only a few other people, lounge chairs with tables, waiters to bring you drinks or food as you wish. There is something by elite about that and fancy. The service was good, the girls and boys very attentive and helpful. We had a gold class experience booked which is the movie plus food and drinks. This will set you back $160 for two people. We could choose a total of five plates, meal or dessert and a house wine or beer. The pricing on the menu is steep, I think that the experience package does amount to a decent discount. The pricing gives you a little hope that it might be pretty good food, and while it wasn't terrible it wasn't the $25 Sliders that you are use to on the Melbourne streets. More like fancy McDonald's. The cinema was clean and tidy the screen and surround was probably better than the standard cinema. I did find that our neighbours ordering and paying for drinks during the movie was distracting and annoying. Maybe I just don't like people, take me to the Coburg drive in any day where I can sit and eat in my car and don't have to deal with others.

Sure the popcorn prices are extortionate and you will probably need to sell a kidney to buy a bag…read moreof maltersers, but it's all part of the movie experience right? I like Crown when I'm in the mood for seeing a big blockbuster. The seats are comfortable, the screens are large and the sound is good which is pretty much all you can ask for in a cinema experience (okay so vibrating massage chairs would be nice too). It's also perfectly located to nearby restaurants at South Wharf, or if I'm in the mood for an all out American feed, The Merrywell.

Backlot is a private cinema, open to groups - think work functions, parties, hens/bucks (apparently you can play games on the big screen too). The cinema fits about 80 people and the chairs are so comfy. Big black leather seats and big double seats in the back. Unlike some smaller/pop-up movie theatres, this place gives you the proper cinema experience - dark, big screen, big sound, no distractions from the outside world. There is a candy bar at the front that will play videos (and logos if you're a business hiring it out). They have catering options or there's a small surcharge per head to bring in food/drink depending on what kind of catering you're looking at. Looking forward to heading back to catch a movie with a friend or 70.

With only one screening room they managed to really make watching a movie comfortable. Between the giant leather couches, the free private parking, the movie sound which plays in the bathroom so that you don't get left behind and the decor which makes going to the movies more authentic they really did well. To top it off they even have couple's leather chairs so that you can really get up close when your parter gets a fright. I'll make sure to post more in depth once I've experience it for real!

However, it is one of the palace cinemas which means that it does tend to have some pretty good movies showing, as well as quite a few of the stage to screen productions as well (which is the main reason I tend to end up at these cinemas). The cinema itself isn't all that bad, and is easier to get to than some of them, but once again, it isn't a favourite.

The waiting area was furnished like a lavish ballroom. It was seriously regal, from the Victorian chaise lounges and armchairs to the ornate mirrors and lighting. There was even a grand piano on display (what a shame nobody was playing on it). And I spied not an ordinary bar but a 'Prosecco' bar which I would have made a beeline for if I wasn't already slightly late for the film. And then of course only when I took my seat did I realise that I could have purchased a vino and laid it on the cute mini table beside me (not cup holder. TABLE!). Maybe next time, when I'm no longer a noob. One other thing worth mentioning was that the (female) loo was super fancy like the rest of place, and very clean too! They get a whole star just for that!

How about catching that movie you've had on your radar and it just so happens that it's not showing anywhere else, but Cinema Nova? What about that moment you just wanted to watch a movie make it a little bit better with some vino and a homemade choc top? Yes, yes! You can do all this and more when you come on down to Cinema Nova! No, this isn't the type of theater that feels the need to keep with the times trying to impress the audience with the wows of modern cinema. This cinema is too cool to even care that others are competing with each other. Cinema Nova sits back and does it's own thing. The hipster of cinemas, if you will. It smirks at the idea of fancy reclining seats, shrugs off allocated seating, laughs in the face of extra leg room, and rolls it eyes to 567000 surround sound systems. All Cinema Nova calls for is simple, film goers and what going to movies used to be all about, film. It's a classic theater and will continue to stay that way and stand it's ground, the exact way cinemas should be, focusing all about what's on the screen.
