Nice rooftop overseeing the city view! There's a rooftop lounge area for cinema time and a time for sitting around to just simply relax while sipping on drinks! They provide the bar food of burgers and etc., if you want munchies. I was enjoying the sun and city landscapes here! It's quite a communal place to be and overseen to get up here! Although there is minimal seating, it's understandable due to the small space, however, walking in between the crowds to climb the "bleachers" or stairs was a bit problematic. What a location!! Once you've worked off dinner by climbing the stairs (oh, there is a lift) you come to an area that has a bars on your left and right. As the sun goes down you are immersed into a star lite night and cinema experience. Now I've tried it, I personally couldn't think of a better way to see a movie on a warm summers night. You have the option of arriving a little earlier and enjoying a drink at the bar beforehand - where the vibe is friendly and inviting. With a range of cocktails and selection of other beverages to entice you can sit and enjoy the view and soak up the sun. Closer to 9:00pm the crew start to set up the cinema seating. Don't be fooled by the VIP area. I personally feel your unreserved seating offers you a better vantage point to see the screen and the deck chairs look more comfortable than the VIP directors chairs placed up the back. But you do have a choice of seating options. With cocktails, burgers and the odd choc top, what more could you ask for? This is certainly somewhere that will now be on my regular to do list. This building is an absolute wonderland of fun stuff. Starting on the ground floor with the rickety, stinky old lift that you looks, sounds and feels like it may not get you to the floor you want to get to. It's an experience, and also, if you're looking to get to the top floor, it's a hefty climb. First floor: Cookie - everyone who loves bar culture in Melbourne has been to Cookie with its blend of perfectly made cocktails, Asian fusion cuisine and little balconies to relax on. Second floor: The Toff in Town - excellent dark woody bar with old train carriage booth seating complete with doors for semi-privacy, plus great drinks, DJs and an ace music/gig room, and caged area and long balcony for outdoor action. Third floor: retail heaven - Metropolis, a fab little bookshop with excellent art books and a fine selection of gifts, gift cards and postcards; Someday, a pricey store stocking contemporary fashion from highly sought after designers; and Bul, timeless seaside fashion. Like level seven and a half in Being John Malkovich, the Wing Chun martial arts school on level four is rather unexpected. Oh the ever-so-cool Rooftop Cinema, a place to sit back and drink whilst enjoying the chic art house flick on show. The rooftop itself is spacious and a delight to be in, great on a sunny day also. The vibe is always 'buzzing', there's a light hum from all the chatter and people presence, create's a really enjoyable ambiance. If you happen to come after 6pm though, be prepared... it will take six flights of stairs to get up there and depending on how much you have had to drink, can be an immense experience. This is one of Melbourne top sights and there's a reason why it's a household name, because it is joyous to be in. read more

This is THE Rooftop that Melburnians refer to when they mention going to the rooftop. Over the years (since the smoking ban) a number of others have sprung up but this is the original 'hidden' on the 7th floor/roof of "Curtain House". The lift runs slowly (esp as all floor buttons have been pressed by people walking up/down) and doesn't take many, it's very busy (on a hot day expect to queue to get in) and it's rare to get a table, the service is painfully slow no matter how many staff they have. None of that matters though, the coolness of the venue with it's astro-turf the atmosphere, fantastic people watching and of course the fab 360 CBD view (the best of all the rooftops imo) makes it another of my regulars over the last 7 years. They also host the ever popular Sunday Rooftop cinema. 4 1/2 stars because of the queues. read more

I almost forgot about this place! We only stopped here for maybe twenty-ish minutes because it was quite cold that night, but I really enjoyed my short but sweet visit. Rooftop Bar, located inside of what is known as Curtin House, is a bar and burger joint, shows movies in summertime. They also hold other events, and from what I've heard, seems to be hoppin' all the time! Unfortunately, I went at night - and although the view was nice, I would have liked to view the city from here during the day. As I've mentioned before, this is what I've thought about most of the rooftop bars here. I'm not quite sure what my drink was called - but it was the really fruity cocktail, which was a bit sweet, but also a good mix of flavors. The service was great! Even with the number of people, they took time for a short chat and seemed to enjoy recommending the best drink for their customers. My only complaint was that the chairs weren't the most comfortable things in the world, but I definitely want to return, maybe for a burger and movie in the summer! read more

Lifts weren't working. There were gig posters in the stairs. I liked it already. And atop that angels' eyrie was a hipster bar and a cinema 'neath the stars clad in sexy astroturf. And the price? Free. No, I promise. Unfathomable, right? Uncanny. But 'tis true, I swear. Bond was playing, Daniel Craig's first outing. We copped a fair bit of stink-eye from locals there to watch the movie, but hells, how could I stay silent with a bourbon in my fist and the firmament writ large above? Righteous. read more

Incredibly picturesque view of the Melbourne skyline only a few floors above Someday store. The roof floor draped in astroturf and wood. On the right, is the wooden bar armed with 3-4 beer taps, bottle fridges located in the back, and on a good day, mulled wine. The bar is accompanied with nice and friendly service to match the hipster clientele. I came here several times, one of which after Someday's limited edition Hennessy bottle release designed by Futura 2000. After the release, the lady and I came up to the rooftop bar and grabbed two pints of Little Creatures Bright Ale. We made our way to the general seating section decked with lawn chairs, tables and heat lamps. We returned on a night where they showed Donnie Darko up on the projector adjacent to the burger bar. We ordered 2 cheeseburgers, both cooked to medium, with no frills ketchup (that's right I said ketchup), pickles, onions and American cheese. Coupled with chips, this was quite a meal. If you want something more intimate go to the second floor and turn left into Choo-Choos which has amazing Thai Tappas and the possibly the best wait staff in Melbourne. The Rooftop Cinema bar is one of the more accessible 'secret places' in Melbourne, and one of the most well known. So it's not really a secret at all, I suppose. But it's fun to pretend, isn't it? So as you either curse the day you were born climbing endless stairs or squeeze into the elevator to whisk you to the top (assuming you don't take a pit-stop along the way - there are curiosities on several levels), you'll eventually arrive at the holy grail: a large open space that feels like it's right in the middle of the city. It's not, but the imposing skyscrapers lend this venue a sense of centrality. Don't let my number of check-ins fool you; I've been here before. On this occasion it was on a Sunday afternoon, showing a friend around the city. It was wet, and not many people were around. The place subsequently felt a bit eery - too cool to be underpopulated, as if you've stumbled upon the twitching corpse of the night before, surrounded by those with no pressing urgency to return home. The bar downstairs being closed just added to the feeling that maybe you shouldn't be here, drinking at 3pm. And that made it cool. On any given evening it's open, this venue is a lot busier and on the weekend, you can expect to queue up, although I didn't spot any pretentious discrimination about who gets in. If you can walk in a straight line, you'll probably be alright. The crowds transform the feel of this place, and on a clear, warm evening, it has a touch of magic about it. I'm not one for overly crowded places so this doesn't represent a night out for me, but it's a fantastic stop-off, and I'd imagine it's pretty awesome when they show movies. Drinks are moderately priced, the venue feels friendly and welcoming, and is well managed in terms of space. A solid four stars. read more

Now this was an experience. I've been to rooftop bars all over the world, New York, San Diego, London, errrr Dublin... but Rooftop Cinema may just have it perfect. It's set up to offer an experience. The Art House cinema projector, the great CBD view, the cosiness of the seating area under the heaters (it was winter when I visited), the little food shop and of course the astroturf lawn. All of these add up to make rooftop cinema better than the sum of it's parts. A cool crowd and great DJ scene top it all off. One of the best bar's I've been to. read more

Post conference drinks overlooking the Melbourne CBD...nothing is better than this! The numerous flights of stairs to get up here are tiring enough to justify an entire jug of sangria. The views are great, the vibes are good, and the drinks are tasty. I especially appreciated the heaters that surround the fences since it was a bit chilly up there but comfortable with the heat. The astro turf and decor is hip without being cheesy and they have Lush hand soap in the bathrooms. I declared after finding the Lush, I'd go nowhere else to have a good night. read more

We have no shortage of great rooftop bars in Melbourne and this is one of the classics. Some months they run the rooftop cinema showing great classic and cult films from the comfort of a deck chair. Summer is the best time to be here when the whole bar is at capacity and full to the brim with people enjoying the sun. There is still plenty of people here during winter but be prepared to huddle up around some gas heaters or bring a nice warm jacket. This bar is completely open to the elements! Also it's a good idea to get here early in the evening because the place gets really busy and it's no fun trudging up all those stairs to the bar only to be turned away. If your around this area you should also check out the toff and cookie located just a few floors below in the same building! read more

Not a place for a quiet drink and catch up with friends. Location is sensational, but prices are average and when it's vaguely warm it's really busy, even on a Monday night. It's got a cool vibe, so if you want to go drinking at a "cool" place to be, then this is it. If you're more about socialising and friends, it's more challenging. Oddly enough, Rooftop Bar is probably my least favourite bar in Curtin House. I think the trick is to head there for a Sunday afternoon session on a not-quite-sunny day or on a cinema night because this place goes gangbusters on Friday nights. Generally however, you're in for a bit of a wait for drink and shouting over the music and hordes of other patrons. However, I may have been a little grumpy due to taking the stairs up because I'm pretty unfit. Rooftop is also good for smokers, if they don't die on the way up! Anyway, I'm more of a fan of Cookie and Choo-Choo's/The Toff however Rooftop does have it's charm on the right days. read more

The Rooftop Bar & Cinema has an awesome location, right in the middle of the city. The bar is fine, serving all your basic ciders and beers. The staff are pretty good and what you'd expect. The reasons I come here are for the views and the burgers. I fancy myself a bit of a burger connoisseur and the All Day Burger with Stereo Sauce and fries is delicious! RECOMMENDATION: Get here for an early lunch on the weekend, beat the crowds and nab a table on the AstroTurf and try fit in a couple of burgers with fries before you leave. read more

Bit of a Melbourne institution by now, the Rooftop Bar at Curtain House is a great way to spend a sunny day. Some ok drink specials and sangria, and the burgers are good too. Bit of an interesting mix of crowd usually there - hipsters to businessmen, and a large age spectrum. Occasionally there can be a big rowdy group drawn to one of the city's 'hot spots' - but otherwise it's all pretty chill. I love coming to this place you get the best of both worlds usually In the summer months they have a twilight movie theatre Which is always enjoyable on a nice summers evening the other months you can just enjoy the views of Melbourne while having a few drinks with friends. Tried to step in here once at 7pm on a Friday and were turned away at door as a friend had sneakers (yet people coming out had flip flops)? Anyway, yesterday about 3pm, walked past and there were no bouncers, and figured out why. In the daytime, this place is a casual drink/food rooftop that is super chill and really nice and well priced right in the middle of the CBD. But at night apparently becomes more of a club. I'll totally return here for the day time drinks whenever around (only complaint is the Cafe Del Mar-ish type music playing from the speakers which I find a little tacky), but otherwise really chilled out and friendly. The building is also host to a variety of other places, like restaurant Cookie, which I will be checking out too at some point. But the rooftop bar, in the day time at least, is awesome. read more

The description is in the name!! Right in the CBD of Melbourne you have a roof top bar. Apparently there is a lift but i have never once been in it!! It adds character to climb all the stairs to get to the top! Perfect for hot day and after work drinks! Does get very packed so i do recommend getting there as early as possible. To be honest there is at almost all times a line up for drinks but i mean its one of the most classic rooftops bars Melbourne has and is deff worth a visit. I wish they had a bigger cocktail list & that service was friendlier but because this place is so great, they get away with being a little pretentious. The only thing bad is you get serve drinks in plastic cups but that is understandable, most rooftops have some sort of OH&S policy regarding bottles. It's a rooftop bar in Melbourne. Duh. 2. Hosts the amazing All Day Burger by Beatbox Kitchen. That's right, no truck chasing or twitter account needed, just rock up and have one of Melb's best burgers in one hand and a beer in the other 3. Very central point in the CBD, everyone knows where Cookie is - this is on the roof, which makes it a good meeting point and haven for tourists 4. Rooftop Cinema all through summer playing the classics Be warned however, on a Friday/Saturday night this place is far less casual. My friends and I attempted to run upstairs for a burger after a gig and were turned down because one of us was wearing thongs. There's huge queues and typical CBD awfulness on a Saturday night, so I would recommend checking it out on one of the less popular nights to get the best experience. read more

I love Rooftop - in winter or summer its the perfect venue to catch up with friends & meet new and interesting people. The way the deck is set up I believe is encourage patron interaction.
