Don't get me wrong, Moonlight Cinemas is still one of my favourite things to do when it comes to summer in Melbourne, but the good ol' days of Moonlight are fading. When we ventured in to the perfectly manicured gardens yesterday eve, I was stunned to find HALF of the viewing area already bean-bagged, a quarter a second VIP area, and the remainder was for the plebs (i.e. you and me.) The Gold Grass area appears to be a whole lot better, with staff catering to your every need, but the rest of us were crammed in to a vastly smaller area. Moonlight I still love you, I just wish I didn't have to sit so close to strangers when I'm with you.

And bats. I love bats. Seeing them fly over the movie screen at dusk delights me every time. Hot tips to make the most of your Moonlight Cinema experience: 1. Bring something comfortable for your bum, or pay $9 for a bean-bag rental. 2. You can BYO, so BYO! (Including alcohol). How great is it that you can chow down on picnic goodies and share drinks with your friends? (For the unprepared, there are also concessions available for purchase.) 3. Know your nearest toilet! Stumbling around in the dark with a full to bursting bladder after following step #2 is preferably kept to a minimum. 4. Save some cash with $12 tickets on Thursdays. 5. Bring an extra layer. Even on warm days, Melbourne frequently cools off in the evening. So bring an extra rug to rug up.

Boasting eight screens including one massive outdoor screen that operates between December and March every year, the Cameo manages to keep up with the modern cinemas like Village and Hoyts. Screening a combination of mainstream, blockbuster, art house and foreign films there is always something for everyone. Seating isn't allocated and they provide the traditional candy bar - complete with extra salty popcorn. The outdoor cinema is really cool - patrons get deck chairs and scatter themselves on a gentle hill to watch the latest hit on a huge screen set just in front of the Belgrave train line. So far every time I have been a train passing has never interrupted the screenings but if that were to happen I get the feeling that it would only enhance the experience. Ticket prices are really cheap which is a massive bonus. Concession tickets are $13.50, Adults $16.50, Seniors $9.50 and Kids $12.00. They have a tightarse Tuesday when all tickets go down to just $8.00! Totally awesome. If you're really cheap like me then you will want to sign up for their Cameo Card. This allows you cheap tickets all the time as well as discounts at other business in Belgrave. With this card ticket prices go down to $11.50 for Adults, $9.50 for Concession and $7.50 for Kids and Seniors. The card costs $15 and you get a free movie ticket upon signing up - who could complain about that? The cinema opens ten to fifteen minutes before the first session and closes five to ten minutes after the last session. Session times vary from week to week - check their website or the old fashioned billboard out front for these. These cinemas have a really great atmosphere that the bigger chains simply cannot emulate. Parking is really close by and if you're travelling by train it's only a five minute walk from Belgrave station. See you there?

One of the highlights of this cinema occurs in summer, when the large outdoor screen kicks into gear. Moviegoers are given the option of a beach style lounge chair, or a spot on the grass, as you recline on the hill and watch your film under the stars. Instead of speakers, each patron gets a set of headphones to wear, personalizing the experience and ensuring chatting moviegoers are kept unheard. The cinema invites you to bring your own picnic, and we like to take a bottle of wine along to sip away at in the warm night air. Showing all the latest films, plus special screening s of more indie titles, expect to pay the standard rate of about $16 for an adult, and $8 for a child. Join up to the Cameo club and you'll get $5 off your ticket if purchasing an adult pass.

How about catching that movie you've had on your radar and it just so happens that it's not showing anywhere else, but Cinema Nova? What about that moment you just wanted to watch a movie make it a little bit better with some vino and a homemade choc top? Yes, yes! You can do all this and more when you come on down to Cinema Nova! No, this isn't the type of theater that feels the need to keep with the times trying to impress the audience with the wows of modern cinema. This cinema is too cool to even care that others are competing with each other. Cinema Nova sits back and does it's own thing. The hipster of cinemas, if you will. It smirks at the idea of fancy reclining seats, shrugs off allocated seating, laughs in the face of extra leg room, and rolls it eyes to 567000 surround sound systems. All Cinema Nova calls for is simple, film goers and what going to movies used to be all about, film. It's a classic theater and will continue to stay that way and stand it's ground, the exact way cinemas should be, focusing all about what's on the screen.

My first and probably last gold class experience…read more Don't get me wrong it was pretty cool having a cinema to yourself and only a few other people, lounge chairs with tables, waiters to bring you drinks or food as you wish. There is something by elite about that and fancy. The service was good, the girls and boys very attentive and helpful. We had a gold class experience booked which is the movie plus food and drinks. This will set you back $160 for two people. We could choose a total of five plates, meal or dessert and a house wine or beer. The pricing on the menu is steep, I think that the experience package does amount to a decent discount. The pricing gives you a little hope that it might be pretty good food, and while it wasn't terrible it wasn't the $25 Sliders that you are use to on the Melbourne streets. More like fancy McDonald's. The cinema was clean and tidy the screen and surround was probably better than the standard cinema. I did find that our neighbours ordering and paying for drinks during the movie was distracting and annoying. Maybe I just don't like people, take me to the Coburg drive in any day where I can sit and eat in my car and don't have to deal with others.

I like Crown when I'm in the mood for seeing a big blockbuster. The seats are comfortable, the screens are large and the sound is good which is pretty much all you can ask for in a cinema experience (okay so vibrating massage chairs would be nice too). It's also perfectly located to nearby restaurants at South Wharf, or if I'm in the mood for an all out American feed, The Merrywell.
